Chris Riddell was born in Cape Town, South Africa, where his father was an Anglican priest and a member of the ANC. The family moved to England in 1963, when Riddell was one year old, and he spent his childhood in a number of different locations, as his father moved between parishes. Both of Riddell's parents continued to be active in the anti-apartheid movement.

Chris Riddell is an internationally acclaimed writer and illustrator whose many awards include the Nestlé Gold Award and two Kate Greenaway Medals—the most prestigious prize for illustration in the UK. He is the creator of more than one hundred books for all ages, including the immensely popular series the Edge Chronicles and his latest chapter book series, starring the irrepressible Ottoline Brown, which School Library Journal called "exceptional." Chris lives in Brighton, England, with his wife and three children where he invents his amazing characters in a very tidy shed in his yard.

The sequel is here! And I was so hyped when I saw it at Library #3! Finally I could read this book! YES! In this book we follow Tiggy, a girl who has secrets, she doesn't know them but she knows something is up. Her guardian is always telling her about what she should do should things go awry. The story picks up quickly and gets very exciting and awesome. Especially when we meet people/animals/robots who met the Guardians and tell their story along with going with Tiggy on her journey. And as soon as we heard certain hints about the Guardians I knew who Tiggy was. LOVED it! And then there is an epic adventure, a fantastic battle, and more. The ending, perfection! I also loved the art (but then again he is one of my favourite illustrators).
The only reason I rated it a bit lower was that at times it felt a bit disconnected, like there were pages missing just connecting two things together. We just hopped along.

" Snow was falling, as it did almost every day in the land of Thrynne."
So begins the second instalment of the Cloud Horse duology.
It's been ten years since The Guardians of Magic disappeared and the Kingdom of Thrynne has been in perpetual winter (Narnia fans, anyone?). We meet young Tiggy (or Antigone for strangers), an orphan who lives with her guardian Badger close to an almost deserted city, since most inhabitants left for warmer climate.
There is a mystery about Tiggy and her guardian says she will find out what it is when the time is right. After she encounters an elf with dubious intentions and receives his gifts, the time seems to approach sooner than expected.
It was a treat reading this in a park with the wind blowing, while Tiggy struggled through the winter and snow. I love Tiggy and her guardian Badger (can we have a prequel with just their life together?), her adventure is fun and interesting and links to the events in the first book. Again, as in the first book, I feel this story alone could have been a trilogy, like in the Edge Chronicles. I just needed more, more character development, more experience and world building in each part of the journey, more obstacles and more magic lore.
I'm glad I've finished the series (hoping to finish more started series in the next period, wish me luck!). I had a few giggles on the way (the brothers Stiltskin, anyone? :D ) Illustrations are marvelous as always. Hoping for more and longer fantasy series in the future by Riddell.

As always Chris Riddell’s illustrations are glorious and being so much charm to this story. Having enjoyed the first book I was happy to return to the world although wish I had possibly reread the first as sometimes I struggled a little to remember specific events of the first book.

It’s a charming fantasy story that I can see children enjoying full of whimsy and lovable characters. My slight critique is I felt the end was a little anticlimactic/ I would have like just a little more time to have been spent reaching the resolution of the tale.

I hadn't read the first book in this series and I think that I probably should have. There are references to the previous events but it would have given a more rounded picture.
That said, this is a great adventure story for children with a brave heroine at the centre. I enjoyed meeting Tiggy and her friends and the illustrations are wonderful!

4.5*. Beautifully illustrated and fun story. Some of the writing choices were hard for my brain but I still didn't want to put it down.

Another beautifully illustrated story to conclude the Cloud Horse Chronicles. I ordered this in advance and so got a signed copy, along with a signed original drawing by the author.
