Fans of Bridgerton and Game of Thrones will love this brand new dark fantasy romance.
The guards arrive at my humble cottage with a ridiculous offer: Come to an exclusive and mysterious isle to compete for the hand of a royal husband.
Enjoy a week of glittering balls, dancing, ostentatious wealth…and a royal hunt.
All I have to do is to get rejected by a prince, and I’ll be sent home with a pot of money.
My father tells me it’s dangerous. He begs me not to go. But I'd do anything for him, I could change our lives with this money.
But when I arrive on the Roaring Isle, I meet the royals who ordered this marriage market. But there’s no prince charming here. These men are monsters.
Powerful.
Toxic.
Bloodthirsty.
In the dark and treacherous wilderness, they are the hunters and me and the other would be royal wives… we’re the prey.
Britt Andrews is an author of Paranormal Reverse Harem Romance novels. She loves eating Mexican food, reading all the books, and living her best mom life in rural Ohio. Britt is a high energy extrovert who loves shattering glass ceilings and expectations. She tries to bring her humor across in her words, hoping to make every reader laugh out loud in public at least once, trust us, she'll get you when you least suspect it.
Hmm I don't know how I felt about this one. This book was relatively short, but it somehow felt long/slow, and we don't really learn anything. It felt a bit like half of a book. The ending was extremely predictable, so it was frustrating for me, as the reader, to just KNOW what was going to happen for so long while the characters all bumble around like idiots.
IDK this review is about to read a bit like a rant, but I promise that I didn't hate this book. It annoyed me a lot because it had potential, and I was really interested in the initial premise, but there were a number of things that drove me insane.
Plot Basically the general summary of this fantasy romance book is like Love Island/Bachelor in Paradise, but it's super fucked up and dark. There are all of these princes from the main 4 royal families, and these princes can't access their shifter creatures (dragons, wolves, tigers, and bears) until they're 18-years-old or older, and then they have to spill human blood. Because of a curse, they also can't control their creatures at all once they finally shift. Also, no one in the realms know that they have a shifter creature.
So anyways, every 10 years, the 4 royal families summon single women from all over the realms to come to this island under the guise of being a potential bride for one of the princes. However, the women are then led into a gated forest, and then ruthlessly slaughtered by the princes in their shifted form (after they have shifted for the first time), and the women don't realize that the princes are the ones slaughtering them.
Once every prince has killed at least one human, the women are allowed to leave the woods, and the princes select a bride from the remaining women because it's all like, survival of the fittest and about needing a strong queen or whatever.
My Thoughts It was pretty dark. The Hunger Games part of it where they were all being picked off and murdered seemed to drag on forever. I still can't really tell if this is a MF or MMF romance. I'm leaning towards MF between Evie and Dair based on the ending, which is a bit disappointing, but whatever. I don't really know if I'd prefer any alternative at this point. The first 40% really seemed to set up nicely for a reverse harem between Evie and at least a few of the princes, but that fell short pretty quickly. The romance is basically non-existent in this book, and all potential love interests leave a lot to be desired. I'm still not sure if the author is trying to set up for Torin, Dair, and Evie all being together (there were def some homoerotic moments between Torin and Dair), but Torin was giving off rapey vibes towards the end, and he kind of lost me.
To be honest, I honestly just can't get past the fact that all of the princes murdered all of the women, and then decided who to marry based on the survivors. I don't care how apologetic or charming Dair and Torin are--they literally ate and murdered a ton of innocent people because their fathers told them to "for the good of the realm." I just can't get past it, and while I know they're victims too to an extent, I can't view any of these princes as love interests. Torin certainly knew what was going to happen before the Hunt began because his father legit said words like "the remaining women," and Torin was like, ah that sucks but I guess it must be done!
There are also honestly too many characters. There are like 50 princes and I have no idea who is who, especially because all of the princes call each other nicknames or by their last names sometimes. In book 2, I'd highly recommend that the author include a character glossary with each family (+ their shifter creature) and all of the princes (+ their nicknames) listed.
I also really didn't like the insta-friendship between Evie, Kael, Riv, and Isla. They were all weirdly obsessed with each other and talking about being BFFs after knowing each other for like 1 hour (before the hunt even began). There was unrealistic friendship progression with really cringey dialogue between them. The night these characters met, Evie was already like, Isla is just so good--she is the perfect queen because she is good. Like, OK, you met her 20 mins ago, relax. The writing at the beginning of the story was just rushed--it was like the author wanted to jump into the hunt plotline so badly that she didn't want to take the time to fully develop or craft her characters or the relationships along the way.
I feel like I have whiplash after that ending! The book definitely kept me on my toes! I laughed, I cried, I screamed but definitely did not see that happen. I have my suspicions on who Evie truly is, even though we find the true identity of her father at the end I think there is more to who Evie is. I can’t wait for book 2!!!
The characters, the plot, the mystery, the action. This book had it all. I love Britt Andrews’ works, I’ve been obsessed with her since I read Emerald Lakes.
This book had me on the edge of my seat. It was so fun and exciting to read. I love Evie! She is such an amazing FMC. Isla & Riv were everything and more!
I read this book in a day because I truly couldn’t put it down. Once you get sucked in, you cannot stop until you know how everything plays out. And that ending!!! I need the next book ASAP!
This was great! A tad predictable, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Evie is a great heroine, I like her fire and skill to survive. The side characters are wonderful, I especially liked Isla and Kael.
The first few chapters I was a bit lost with all the names, so I ended up doing a cheat sheet, but didn't even need it after the first few chapters.
The plot really captured my interest, and in all its gruesomeness it really made me feel all the things. Mostly hate for the ones behind it.
This gives me Throne of Glass meets Hunger Games meets Bridgerton. Even though there was no spice at all, I enjoyed it a lot and knowing Britt Andrews books the spice will be out if this world when do get it. Very exciting, and I can't wait for the next book.
I’m not going to lie. I went into this book completely blind. I had absolutely no clue what A Hunt So Wicked was about and you know what? I’m glad I didn’t know anything because it made it THAT much better.
Britt Andrews is honestly such a fantastic world builder- she has a keen ability to create an entire ecosystem of interesting characters, unique circumstances, and dramatic dynamics that draw you in. I’ve loved every single book she’s written and I’m obsessed with everything that is her.
I could NOT put this book down- I read it one sitting and literally screamed at that cliffhanger. Our ending was not only epically entertaining but a huge game changer for Evie (and the characters), and I am dying to find out what happens next, especially for our amazing heroine to hopefully find the love and support she deserves.
I highly, highly, highly, highly recommend this book!!!!!

I loved this whole concept and could not put this book down. THAT DANG CLIFFHANGER I know it will be a long time before the next book but I’ll be here very impatiently waiting 😂
Great fantasy world building and characters filled with personalities that jump off the page.
A Hunt So Wicked is the perfect fantasy read for fans of Bridgerton, The Selection, and Zodiac Academy.
It's for sure one of my favorite reads of the year and possibly of all time.
I'm obsessed! I'm desperate to see what other twist and turns Britt will have in store for these characters. I'm seriously debating diving right back in all over again. I don't want to leave the book!!
🖤 Epic Fantasy World Building 🖤 Fast Paced Plot 🖤 Slow-burn Romance 🖤 Forced Marriage 🖤 Magic, Secrets & Intrigue
(arc review) Imagine Hunger Games, Acotar and GoT had a child.👀
Quintaria is a kingdom divided between 5 royal families with distinctive emblems: Volos, the dragons; Oberon, the bears; Faolan, the wolves; and Ekpen, the tigers. The 5th, the Sova owls, was mysteriously exterminated many years ago.
Every 10 years a month-long celebration takes over the kingdom, the Recurrence. And the main tradition is the Hunt: girls from all over the realm are summoned to meet the unmarried royals on an island where they will hunt for a few days and choose a wife among the guests.
Evie, a teacher from a poor village, is summoned. She has no interest in marrying a nobleman, but she is very interested in the gold promised to whoever attends the party and does not get engaged in the end. So she goes, with the promise of being the most unpleasant maiden there.
But Evie immediately catches the eye of two prominent heir princes: the bffs Torin Volos and Alasdair Oberon.
Only this whole party turns into a nightmare the next day, when the girls and their guards are taken to participate in the hunt, and not only do they not find any of the suitors, but are violently and successively attacked by bloodthirsty beasts. With all the corpses around, everyone starts questioning whether they were really taken there just to meet gentlemen and receive marriage proposals, or if the truth is much more grotesque than that.👀
Listen: the less you know, the better. Find out through reading. In the beginning it's a bit monotonous, then all of a sudden BANG. I wasn't expecting the amount of gore that was in this book.😂
But man, this plot blew me away and I am IN PAIN waiting for the continuation. I'll be honest, there is no romance here, just the seeds planted, but I already know it's going to be crazy.
In AHsW you will find great world-building, bloodthirsty shifters, intrigue, mysteries, incredibly strong female characters (not only Evie), diversity and friendships strengthened by hardships.
This book legit came out of left field. I remember when Britt had first mentioned it, and then some time went by and then it was out. I was not expecting the chokehold that this book would have on me. I didn't want to put this book down!
While this book felt quite slow, it was a world-building and character development type of book. There wasn't any smut or spice, but it didn't feel like it was lacking in any sort of way.
I really enjoyed each of the main characters but Evie was definitely my favorite. The side characters that we get to meet were also ones that I would enjoy having their own book.
Overall, while this book is more a development / building block type book, it will make you cry, laugh, swear and feel like you need more. I can't wait to see where the rest of the series goes!
Thank you to Britt for the advanced review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book. Wow. Freaking wow. I like Britt Andrews. She's a solid 4 star author for me. I knew this book would be good but it blew so far past my expectations I'm stunned.
Evie is a strong, brave, solid FMC with an opinion she's not afraid to share and morals that are unambiguous. I love her relationships with Riv, Isla and Kael. I love that she had a plan and stuck to it.
It's probably not what Britt intended but Kael is my favorite guy. He is smart, confident, strong, determined. He's funny and supportive... he's all the things. I wasnt expecting his ARC to go the way it did.
Dair is my 2nd fav... not a surprise. Torin has the potential to be a flaming douche - "in my kingdom, we take what we want". That can be yummy, and also not. I don't know if I can see where he's going.
Love Riv and Isla... hope Belinda dies horribly. We've definitely not seen the depth of King Ero's evil.
I'm not usually a fan of slow burn but I didn't even realize there was no spice until I was finished. I didn't miss it at all. The world building, story arc, vibrant characters... it was everything.
I loved this book. I'm still thinking about it which is really unusual. I can't wait for book 2!
This book LITERALLY had me on the edge of my seat trying to see what would happen next! It was like one twist after the other and I was eating that shit up 👏🏽. The amount of times I gasped out loud at something that happened is too many to count. Britt did an amazing job with this story. Although there’s not that much romance, the plot makes up for that by a million! That plot is chef’s fucking kiss 🤌🏽. It will have you reading the book in one sitting trying to figure out the twists! The cliffhanger tho!! When I tell you my jaw dropped at what was revealed 🤯. I was SHOOKETH!! I physically can’t say anymore or else I will be spoiling left and right 😅. Do yourself a favor and just go pick it up and read it!
This book gets a 5/5 stars for me and I can’t wait for the next book to come out!!
Totally was into this book. Blood. Gore. Mystery (kinda, you could somewhat guess what was going on for parts of it). But then it ended on a cliffhanger and there is no second book in sight (sad face). Now I’ma be on the lookout for the second book and hope she finishes her other series super quick so this one can get finished within the next year.
And since I mostly read smut, just gonna throw this out there… this book contains absolutely no smut. Another reason I hope the series starts coming along so I can see where exactly this is going and hope things go back to how I want them too… gah!
This book has many vibes..Hunger Games, Bridgerton, Game of Thrones mix of some sorts. Britt writes her characters so well and always has a way of making you love them instantly and this was no exception. Evie, Isla, Riv, and Kael have my heart 💕 so does Dair, maybe. You have royal families, forced marriages, primal shifters, magic with life threatening secrets, and a few spots where you just stop and stare at the words. Honestly this book has all of the makings of your favorite next epic fantasy series! It is also slow burn! Not really any spice in this first book but if I know Britt, she’ll bring the heat later on, no worries. Be warned this is the 1st book in a series, and does end on a cliffy 😅 *Also always check trigger warnings*
I have been obsessed with Britt Andrew's writing since book one of Emerald lakes
She has this amazing way of telling a story that just sucks you in. And this is nothing short of that.
A story begins right before what's called the hunt. Our characters are led to believe that the hunt is where the royalty from all over gets together and there soon to be princes and such hunt game. After this great hunt, the royal men pick their wives.
But if you know Britt, not everything's what it seems.
I fell in love with each character so much.. All but belinda. I'm also really curious about the relationships that are going to form. Book one does a great job of setting the Foundation. But also leave me with some great questions.
I had a really fun time with this.
I read this as a sensitivity read but would definitely pick this up and will reread it once it's out.
I will not read another B. Andrews book. Sho hooked me with Demons in my bed and the second book is taking a million years to come out. Same with this. I really thought it was a standalone.
Spoiler
Mix the hunger games with a little of romance. I didn't like it like the others; I didn't like the acceptance that every woman had of the situtuon; I didn't like the males shallow character development. The ending was interesting. I'm happy with this author? No, I'm not.
A Hunt So Wicked is soo good. Evie is a school teacher who was selected to travel to the Roaring Isles to be a potential wife for a royal. What started out as going in and keeping her head down and be unnoticed, turned out to be so much more. Friendships made, secrets exposed and hearts broken. Britt is a one click author for me, her books transport you into another world of action, adventure and secrets. This is a book you'll not be able to put down, sitting on the edge of my seat cursing some of these royals! Can't wait for the next book.
OMG ! What a phenomenal story. I was literally on the edge of my seat reading. The action, the tension and plot twists were just chefs kiss ! My jaw was on the floor the last 10 percent. I felt such a connection to all the characters in a way I didn’t expect. I can’t wait to see what happens next !
Warning!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a start to a series and there is no heAt, chemistry, sex, love, feeling nothing of the sort! I hope that we find out more information like where is everly s mom, why did her dad have that history w the royalist, are we even going to talk about these young men killing people, why is there a curse???? So many questions but I swore I would not read a series until it was done!!! I am not a patient person and it does not make me want to read more books bc I forget easily about details and personalities so good luck! And be forewarned that this ends on a cliff! I do love the friendship Bn the three girls and the guard.
This book was terrible and I am shocked it has such a good rating. The characters were so boring, the dialogue was cringe-worthy, the "twists" were lame, and I did not have a good time. The Kael reveal was honestly one of the worst things I've ever read. This shit was laughable.
However, when asked by my boss why I was reading it if it was so nauseating, I replied "I think I'd like this if I was fifteen." So, maybe that's the audience? Maybe it's just not for people in their thirties.
Way too much of a filler book and I feel like nothing happened. And then we got the signature cliffhanger that was honestly the only interesting thing to happen in the entire book.
Tropes: fantasy romance, dark romance, multi POV, shifter romance, secret plots, hidden identity, magic royals
Review: This is the first book in a dark, new adult fantasy series by new author Britt Andrews. The book is written in muti-POV and features three strong MCs who are stubborn. The book takes us into a fantasy realm where magic, beasts and curses are everywhere. The book is low spice but full of wit, angst, banter and secrets.
We meet the FMC, Evie, when she is told that she must show for the Hunt. Right away we begin to see the arc of the story unfold with her at the center. Evie is a strong willed, young woman who agrees to enter the Hunt so she can get the gold needed for her classroom supplies. The book unfolds, her stubbornness places her in the middle of two alpha-males who are trying to win her affections during the Hunt.
Alisdair is a bear shifter and the Crown Prince of his kingdom. He is immediately drawn to Evie and during the hunt he faces the reality of the secrets the royal families keep from the public. I loved Dair and felt terrible for him and what happens to him at the end of this first book. I felt like him and Evie were two parts of a while and made each other better as we briefly see in their chapters together. I also enjoyed how he had more empathy and honor compared to other royals.
Torin is the other royal we read about in this first book. He is the son of King Eros and the Crown Prince to be High King. I was not a fan of him in this book and hope karma comes back in book 2. While I feel bad about how deceptive and manipulative his father is, ultimately his decision to choose Evie made me dislike him. I also did not like how he made excuses for his actions during the hunt.
This book had it all. I was drawn in right away and enjoyed the world creations and the bonds between all the characters. I really liked the girl gang Evie creates and hope her and Dair end up together. I also want her to fight Torin and stay true to herself.
The ending left me questioning everything I thought I knew and had me thinking about who Evie is….could she be a hidden royal of the lost line?
Back when the author announced the new series, i was ecstatic, the premise the idea behind everything fascinated me, and when yesterday i got wind that it was out, i ran to amazon as fast as i could, and devoured the book in a day!
Was i sad that it was a slow burn romance? (I understood that closer to the end) absolutely no! (Which is a rate occurrence for me recently! There’s only like one kiss in the whole book, and trust me, you don’t need more (at least in this one, i do want some emerald lake series spice level in the next ones!)
The story is very interesting, and the world introduced is dark and full of secrets! Evie was a great character, though a tad bit naive if you ask me. I mean listen to your father first before drugging him to go and be part of the bridal games! But father is also to blame, if you want your daughter to steer clear of everything royal, maybe be a bit more forthcoming with the information?
Dair was a great character, and i loved his reaction once he realised what he’s done. And while i understand what went down between him and Torin by the end of the book, i’m torn in my feelings towards him. On one hand he chose his principles, but on the other (if my theory is correct and Torin gave him a “choice”) he betrayed the person who he promised to protect! Torin went and disappointed me, though i kind of expected it.
Overall, this was an epic beginning to a great story, and while there’s no actual date for the second book, i hope it will be soon, and we’ll get several of them, because there were many characters introduced and i want to know everyone’s story!
P.s. if you want to check my theories, check my read with me section on my IG 😸
When I say that I DEVOURED this book, please believe me! I started it late at night, took a cat nap, and finished a few hours later. This first book is about setting up the world, introducing our cast of characters, and falling in love with some and loathing others. If you are the type of reader that can go in blind, I say do it because it makes that much more enjoyable.
Our main girl is Evie, and she is not here for the nonsense being fed to them about the purpose of the hunt. Her tongue is sharp, and apart from the few friends she makes, she has one goal and one goal only, to get the coin promised to those not lucky enough to snag a royal husband and go home to make her classroom the best can be. As the story unfolds, you get little clues that Evie is more than even she knows, but there are no confirmations to go with them, so I have conspiracy theories for days.
The side characters are all fantastic, well, the ones that are supposed to be, that is, a few of them can go kick rocks with no socks on. Kael, Isla, & Riv each have traits that make them the perfect group of friends for Evie, and I'm excited to see what's in the future for them.
Don't let the lack of spice deter you! I was on the edge of my seat most of the book, and when I realized the end was nearing, the fact that there was not a drop of spice hadn't bothered me one bit because the story had me in its clutches.
Since this is book 1 in a series, it does end on a cliffhanger. I wasn't ready to toss my Kindle across the room, but I had to stifle my glee and anger because I was reading too late at night and didn't want to wake up my partner.
Unlike her former reverse harem supernatural super spicy smut this intense slow burn was a milder take on dark fantasy romance, and I was all in from the first page!
So, what lass doesn't want to be up against a load of other girls in hopes a prince might pick her for # bride whilst stuck on an island for 30 days in the middle of nowhere against her will with catty lassies and broody royals for company but all is not what it appears for the girls and what should have been a dream come true for most becomes a living nightmare for the majority.
Evie was an absolute delight to get to know and watch grow throughout the book. I loved her friendly yet fierce and passionate personality. From the moment we met her I knew she wouldn't disappoint in what was to come.
Isla and Rivka were the perfect accompaniment to our leading lady. Isla's soft and caring persona to Riv's standoffish and blunt personality was exactly what we needed from our main characters side characters. Enter Alasdair, Torin and the other royals. All at first seem charming isn't that what's expected of a prince but all that changes when their true natures come to shine, and certain revelations are brought to light in the lead up to the hunt.
After the brutality of their survival and events that broke my heart I was left speechless with that ending and the bomb that detonated the cliff-hanger, I know the wait will be well worth it and I can't wait to see what the future holds for Evie and all other characters that are twisted up in this dark tale.
I hate hate hate leaving a bad review for this book. I’m DNFing at 48% unfortunately and even that I had to force myself to get through.
I love love love this author, so writing this pains me. The Magic of Discovery is one of my all time favorite reverse harems and I’m equally obsessed with Demons in my Bed. So maybe my hopes were too high here?
Here are my issues:
🦋 the friendships were so forced. Nothing was realistic about them. It would’ve been better if they grew close by sharing trauma from the hunt 🦋 too many characters, everyone’s brother & cousin was there and I couldn’t mentally keep up 🦋 too predictable 🦋 I have no idea if this is a reverse harem, MMF, or MF romance, nothing was even remotely clear. 🦋 I don’t have anything against slow burns, & I know when it comes to fantasy there’s a certain amount of world building required, but omg this dragged SO much. 🦋 a lot of this felt like filler and fluff, so many things happened that weren’t necessary and didn’t push the story along.
The original idea for this story was incredible, I think it was just executed poorly. I’m not totally writing it off though. I want to see the reviews for book 2 and then I’ll decide if I want to pick this up again!
& if the author ever reads this, please please know how much I love your work & hated writing this! 🥲
