Blood of the Fae #2

Ruins of Bone

Rate this book
Admirers, antiquities, and . . . ancient curses?

A curse taints the ruins of Kilmere—or so the locals say—which makes it an unchancy inheritance for herbalist Jessa Caldwell. Worse still, a cruel fae lord in the guise of a gentleman seeks to wrest the crumbling cliffside fortress from her and use its powers for his own ends.

But Jessa isn’t one to surrender easily. She’s determined to resist the lord’s machinations and protect the legacy left by her mentor, even if that means involving the fae arbiter Riven, an act that could see her permanently locked away—all while evading her family’s expectation that she make a match from their list of favored suitors.

Yet she’s not prepared for the depths of fae deceit and cruelty she discovers—nor the reality behind the curse. When the nearby townsfolk begin to succumb to it, suffering slow, excruciating deaths, the authorities seek a mortal poisoner, refusing to consider that these murders could have an Otherworldly origin.

To uncover the true killer, Jessa must make forbidden alliances and explore the extent of her own fae-influenced nature. If she fails, countless innocents will die, including those closest to her . . . but if she succeeds, it may cost her everything.

In book two of the Blood of the Fae gaslamp fantasy series, Jessa faces her greatest challenge yet—threats concealed within long-abandoned ruins, where secrets about the precarious balance between the Otherworld and her own lay buried. Will she unearth the truth before it’s too late?

A Captivating Continuation of the Blood of the Fae Saga!

The second book in the Blood of the Fae series, Ruins of Bone, is another captivating story by Sarah Chislon. I was completely captivated by the detailed world-building, well-rounded characters, and the fluid progression of the main plot as a dedicated fantasy book reader.

Ruins of Bone - Review

Ruins of Bone ♦ Sarah Chislon

Opinion

The author skillfully draws readers into the magical worlds she has created with her lyrical and vivid words. Ruins of Bone’s rich descriptions, with their unsettling beauty and lurking dangers, created a picture so real that I could just feel the age-old magic pulsing through the pages.

One of the strengths of Chislon’s writing lies in her ability to breathe life into her characters. There’s no denying the character’s development, and the supporting cast gives the story more nuance. The motivations and challenges of each character are skillfully explored, giving the impression that they are real people living in this surreal universe.

The book moves along at a good clip, alternating between fast-paced action scenes and slower, more reflective passages. Plot twists are skillfully written to keep readers on the edge of their seats and wanting more. The complex network of pacts, betrayals, and old predictions gives the narrative a complexity that is thought-provoking and captivating.

Ruins of Bone stands out for its ability to combine classic fantasy elements with novel, creative concepts. Chislon skillfully weaves mythology and folklore into the story to create a magical and intriguing whole. Beyond ordinary fantasy material, the series is elevated by its philosophical depth as it explores issues like power, fate, and the consequences of actions.

Conclusion

While Ruins of Bone is undeniably a worthy successor to the first book in the series, it also manages to stand on its own, offering a unique and compelling narrative that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment. For fans of fantasy who crave a captivating journey into a world of magic, mystery, and mythical creatures, Ruins of Bone is a must-read. Sarah Chislon continues to prove herself as a master storyteller in the fantasy genre, and I eagerly await the next chapter in the Blood of the Fae series.

I’m honestly over the moon that Book Sirens & Sarah Chislon have let me read an ARC of Ruins of Bone, the gaslamp fantasy sequel to Tattoo of Crimson! It’s no secret that I adored the first book, but can I confess something a little bit eccentric? I’d happily hover at Sarah’s side like the sun sylph Asrina, to watch as she continues writing this series! So let’s give you an overview of book two before I fangirl much more, shall we?

Jessa Caldwell is still dealing with the consequences of inheriting her friend’s estate, including that of the Kilmere ruins. And when she refuses to give these ruins to a power hungry fae lord who wants them for his own ends, Jessa knows she must travel to Kilmere to find out why he wants it so badly. But a curse is upon the ruins, & the locals believe it is to blame for the excruciating deaths within their area. To defeat the fae, Jessa must once again involve Lord Riven, the fae arbiter. But can she rely upon his protection, against one of his own kind? And what happens when secrets she doesn’t want to face arise? Will Jessa be able to defeat what lurks within Kilmere, or will this be her end?

Within Ruins of Bone, we are once again treated to a *decadent* gaslamp fantasy full of mystery, intrigue & ways to break social convention. I devoured this book within two days, because once I started? There’s no way I could stop! Sarah creates such tantalising mysteries for Jessa to uncover, & (just quietly) I’d actually love if this series could continue for eternity! I want more. Really, really badly. Sarah could even just put out a one page tale, & I’d happily pay exorbitant amounts of money for it. Her writing is just *that* good...

Lord West is determined to take Kilmere from Jessa by any means necessary. The high fae is not used to facing resistance and finds he enjoys putting fear into Jessa to get his way. She is determined to keep Kilmere away from him while doing so on her own. But as the dangers increase she finds that she needs the help of Riven again. Now needing to enter the ruins, she is faced with the dilemma of keeping it not only in her control but under it as well. Thinking that leaving Avons with her family she would be able to get away from Lord West and the dangerous games he plays but he follows in her wake. And society shows little love to her family when they arrive. Jessa now needs to find a way to save herself, her family, and the innocents that fall in the shadow of Kilmere.

What I think I admire the most about Jessa is her want to stay herself. As the events happen and these things change her, she does not want to bend her will to become something she isn’t. And I also appreciate that Riven seems to tell her the truth and the harsh realities of the situation while others would try to shield her. Yes, it may not be the full truth since he cannot disclose everything but he doesn’t treat her like a fragile soul who needs to be sheltered. I enjoy their interactions and want to see where they go in the next installment. I am also curious about how Mr. Burke will play into things later. We get some answers about Jade and her nature and I was not disappointed at all. Things seem to be escalating within the family, I am curious about how they will handle this increasing tower of secrets and the aftermath. New characters are also introduced that I am hoping to see more of. Overall, I enjoyed seeing this world fleshed out more, the answers I did receive, and the questions that I now hold. I have preordered the next book and am now eagerly awaiting for next year.

Ruins of Bone continues the story of Jessa Cadwell, whose inheritance of the Kilmere ruins has brought her to the attention of the ruthless Lord West, a dastardly high fae masquerading as a gentleman. When he proves difficult to avoid and the news of mysterious deaths occurring in Kilmere is reported, Jessa travels to Kilmere determined to thwart West and stop the rumored curse of Kilmere from killing any more people. Even with the help of fae arbiter Riven, Jessa must seriously evaluate of her own abilities and nature if she ever hopes to defeat West and remove the curse.

Chislon weaves a fantastic gaslight fantasy world that sucks you in and leaves you desperate for more. Jessa continues to grow as a protagonist, both in confidence and in determination. Having to confront unsettling truths about your own self is difficult for any character, and Jessa confronts her fears in a believable, tangible way. As her relationship with Riven develops further, seeing the contrast between fae and human mentality adds further depth to the book.

An excellent continuation in the series that continues to bewitch and beguile.

Short version - Super fun read. Great to resume my reading in Sarah Chilson’s Regancy set fantasy series. Longer version - There are many times I think Jessa Caldwell brings problems on herself as she tries to manoeuvre her (or her Aunts’) societal expectations and prospects for a young lady of good repute and standing. But then not many young ladies have: Forbidden Fae magic that she can’t show to any human or her family will be ruined. Magic and Fae Lords that she can see but most can’t. Lords who have their own agendas. Everyone knows you can’t trust Fae, they don’t lie but never tell you the whole story, and everything they offer comes with a binding price. And her inheritance is magically sentient, keenly wanted by so many for their personal benefit and fiercely protective of the magic bound within. She really would just like to protect those she loves and be left alone in her garden. What is a young lady to do? Fight with everything she’s got as a Lady should! Read the books in order is best. Can I have the next book today please!! Thank you to Sarah Chilson and BookSirens for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.

Reminds me of “Dracula”
Someone once pointed out that the vampires’ victims were young, pretty, and ofttimes unprotected females. The victims were targeted because they were easy prey due to having been trained to comply with what was expected and demanded of them.
In this story, being under the influence of a malevolent fae’s glamour sounds a lot like bullying, disrespecting boundaries, and gaslighting. There is consent without consultation, encouragement of unwanted advances, threats of disinheritance (knowing the females weren’t allowed to have job skills), etc. – all by family members who claim this “stuff” comes from love and a desire for what’s best. Usually done right in front of the perp!
I cannot fathom living a life in which I’d have the complaint of ‘to have a loved one use your dreams as a weapon for control’ or claim that my refusal to commit my life to a jerk was ‘only [merely] maidenly fears of marriage’. Concerns about home intruders are met with scoffs of ‘overactive imaginations’ and ‘flights of fancy’ only because they were voiced by females.

Poor relations dependent upon their family members whose only purpose was to serve.
‘I’ve no particular skill. Only that of being useful.’
This particular character feels that she is not allowed some basic entertainments and relaxations. How sad!

*** We are fortunate to live in a world in which we are beginning to see the damage that this causes – to males as well as to females – and to change that conversation.

Some sage advice from the author when dealing with the Otherworld:
Beware of fine print and avoid fae debt.
‘Seek the truest nature of what’s before you.’

I do have a question for the author, though. From where can one procure a fae-pocket?

Really looking forward to more of this cozy fae/human mystery series when ‘Binding of Silver’ releases in late 2024.

Okay so undoubtedly by far my favourite!! More mysteries are thrown and our MC Jessa not only has to answer to mortal convention and her family’s questions and survive public scrutiny but also dodge Lord West, a dangerous fae who’s determined to see his way requiring Jessa and her inheritance from her beloved mentor.

So I don’t think it was surprise to anyone when Jade’s true nature was revealed and it makes Jessa’s and her relationship tested anew. But they come out stronger than before and I loved that.

Her relationship with Riven was a slow burn, like the slowest burn in history of slow burn. It’s only hinted at or more like imagined in this book but it definitely progressed by a milestone and it was so good to read about that. Not only that but new characters are introduced and they definitely have a significant future and role in Jessa and sisters lives. We also get more information about the Fae and the politics existing and I am so curious about that front.

Overall I am loving this series!

Let me start by saying how much I enjoy Sarah Chislon’s writing style. It is so well done, so descriptive, and it really immerses you in the time frame the book takes place in.

The second book of the Blood of the Fae series delves deeper into Jessa’s world and all the mysteries and tribulations that surround it. The world building in this and previous books of this series is so rich, the dialogue so fitting, the scenery so descriptive, you can imagine it all in your mind as you read. Amidst all that is a murder mystery that involves Fae, curses, otherworldly creatures, magic and a strong, if sometimes too honorable, FMC.

This gaslamp fantasy murder mystery is such an entertaining read. It’s a chunky book, though, so be prepared to invest some time in it. I, for one, am looking forward to reading how Jessa’s story continues when book 3 comes out next year!

I love the options and fantastic Authors we are able to find on BookSirens, I was blown away by this series and am a new fan of Sarah Chislon.

Ruins of Bone is book 2 in the Blood of the Fae series and continues on with the intriguing characters, the mysteries that surround them the suspense of what will happen next.

Jessa has inherited the Kilmere ruins, and this has only brought her the attention of Lord West. Jessa does all that she can to put an end to the rumored curse of Kilmere and to prevent Lord West from further causing chaos and unwanted presence.

I loved the way Chislon built this story and the characters. It is done so in such a way that brings your full attention to the plot that you don't realize how much time has passed since you've looked up for the wonderful story.

Wow! What a page turner bringing the reader deeper into the lives of Jessa and her family. Be prepared to be thoroughly engaged in the gaslight fantasy world that Sarah Chilson has built upon in the second book in this series. Jessa refuses to accept what she is, which only causes further pain to her and her loved ones. Hunky Riven is back as her sidekick, encouraging her to believe in herself when things are at their darkest. You feel the emotions of the characters as your own; love, hate, confusion, despair, disappointment, and anger, as you immerse yourself in the wonderfully crafted story. In this very proper time period piece Jessa is on her own. Pursued by an evil sadistic high fae in human form no one understands why she doesn't want an alliance with this prosperous "gentleman". Danger and adventure are prevalent throughout and it is only through her own brilliant ingenuity, intuition and alliances that she's able to protect herself and those that she loves. Intriguing and mind blowing I couldn't put it down. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Absolutely stellar! I’ve read it twice now enjoyed it every bit as much the second time around. Some intriguing new characters are introduced, Jesse’s character development and struggles are believable and at times heart wrenching. We get to see her progress past the naïveté of the first book, through fear and uncertainty into greater strength and trust. The world-building continues to impress with well thought out and surprising plot twists. I’m savoring the hints of a slow burn romance and can’t wait for the next installment to unpack the new mysteries unfolding in this one.

I love this series. Each book grows in complexity and each book answers more questions, and brings more questions that I want answers to. This series is imminently rereadable, and with each new book in the series I go back to read the whole series as I find events happening in the new book that were hinted at in older books.
Book 2 is the start of Jessa embracing who she is and searching for the answers of who she could become. I love the mystery of this novel, and the new characters introduced, and the depth of characters we see here.

Ruins of Bones is book 2 in the Blood of the Fae by Sarah Chislon. Ruins of Bones has so much action with the main characters in danger. Lord West is high fae and evil while Lord Riven is trying to help Jessa, but, does he betray her? The author threw in a snake, Solan, that is evil with deadly poision. I was left breathless! I can't wait to read book 3, Binding of Silver. Sarah Chislon has written an outstanding fantasy. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

I normally don't read very long books because my reading time is limited, but I love gaslamp fantasy, so I've been sucked into this series. They're not quick reads, more like the type you're meant to spend a long time getting immersed in. The world and characters are interesting and each book has an intriguing mystery and a hint of romance. So far I've enjoyed them, and I look forward to seeing what happens next.

ARC Review for BookSirens

If you’re looking for an amazing historical regency era fae mystery this series is so very worth the read. I thoroughly enjoyed the previous installments, but this one takes the cake! Absolutely riveting! The series keeps getting better and better. So many twists and turns. Hardly a dull moment. The plot is immaculately well written. Blessedly unpredictable. Having to wait a whole year for the conclusion is going to be excruciating. But I’m here for it!

Another good story by Chislon! Elements of paranormal/fantasy combined with regency elements made for a lovely read. Like the other books in the Blood of the Fae series, I found the writing to be floral and repetetive, but not overwhelmingly so, and certainly still in keeping with the regency era writing style. Great for readers who love regency, fae, mysteries, and complex, strong heroines!

Ruins of Bone was everything I hoped it would be and more—Chislon masterfully weaves together this tale of mystery and intrigue. There is a return of beloved characters (and we get to find out much more about them), while fun new characters are also introduced. Readers begin to receive answers to many questions left lingering from Book 1, while still more questions are raised... I could scarcely put this book down while reading it, and now I am left hanging in great anticipation for Book 3!

This was a fascinating clean fantasy that was full of suspense and intrigue. I read every word while on the edge of my seat, and thought about what might happen next whenever I had to take a break from the book… it was truly riveting! The ending was very satisfying, while leaving room for the next one in the series, which I’m excited to explore!

I told myself I wasn’t going to binge read all these, but I’ve already started on book 3 now. 😆😆 With how Ruins of Bone ended how could I not!

I really appreciated the world building and the attention to detail. I love the mixture of regency and fae, one of my favorite combos!

Jessa was still enjoyable as the main character, but her lack of trust in her family got a bit frustrating.

Riven is great. I do wish there were a few swoony moments, to make where I think the romance is going have a bit more of a build up. We get a moment near the end, so I’m excited to see if there is more of that in book 3.

(Spoiler!!! I had to come back to this review after reading book 3 and let you know trust issues are taken care of, and swoon level was turned up! Book 3 is phenomenal! End of spoiler)))

I truly love the writing! The author is very skilled in pacing the story. You get to enjoy a bit of the everyday regency stuff and family issues, and before that has a chance of dragging, you get a bit of action, normally involving Other. It’s such a nice blend, and really keeps the story moving. I didn’t even realize how long this book is because it just flew by for me.

I also enjoyed how each book is revealing more mysteries, but so far both book 1 and 2 solved the main issue that was going on it. It is very satisfying, and nothing is feeling dragged out for too long. Which is impressive considering how long these books are. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 it is truly impressive!

There were a few times that I thought some details weren’t needed, and could have been cut out. One instance that stuck in my mind, is Jessa snags her hand on a chair and it bleeds. Would have been a perfect moment to add a little swoony moment with Riven, but nothing comes from it, and I had to wonder why even have that in there with such a long book anyway. There’s just little moments like that, that I think could have been edited out. BUT overall I love the writing!

I love the side characters! I love Jade, Mr. Burke, Jessa’s family and their dynamic, Dreda. They all bring a lot to the story.

I’m excited to see what book 3 holds!

Content: clean, no swearing, no spice, some mild violence.

Ruins of Bone is Book #2 in the Blood of the Fae series by Sarah Chislon. This series was such a wonderful find- surprising little gems that captivated me right from the very first page. I didn't expect to love these books as much as I did, but Ms. Chislon cleverly wove a spellbinding tale that had me engrossed the whole way through.
It is a fantastic Gaslamp fantasy with historical details, a bit of a whodunnit mystery, with masterful world building, suspense, danger, adventure, action, secrets, paranormal details, curses, a killer, forbidden alliances, Fae, intrigue, and dramatic developments. The worldbuilding and mystery captured my attention and imagination, and I devoured the pages just to discover how it all played out in the end.
Jessa is one of three sisters; she has a love of nature- plants in particular which prompted her herbalist interests. She may only be young, but she really is wise beyond her years. She holds a secret, one that could cause quite a scandal in their society circles if it were to be revealed. So, she is determined to keep her secret caged within her, never to come to light. But that may not be quite so easy -and so her adventures begin.....
Highly recommended.
Happy Reading...

Please someone give me an ARC OF THE NEXT BOOK BEFORE IT COMES OUT.

As with the first book, Sarah Chislon has constructed a beautifully narrated book. Jessa's an intelligent character, her struggles relatable, her character admirable. With twines of mystery, beautiful descriptions, and well written characters, not to mention an actual PLOT, this book sets the stage for the next one to come, and I CANNOT WAIT.

I have very specific taste when it comes to books, and because of that, it's so very rare to find something that fits the bill. This checks it all off:
Jessa is a mc who is intelligent, independent in her thinking, empathetic and kind, strong willed, and can do it all without needing to hate dresses and abandon her feminine nature (as most mainstream authors feel the need to write their female mc's as)

Actual plot? Check.
World building? Check.
Actual writing including beautiful descriptives and an attention to the meaning of true literature? Check.
Realistic relationships and friendships and interactions? Check (no one here is falling in love on day 2 of knowing someone because they're so so hot. People are actually having CONVERSATIONS)
