What started out really good in book 1, then stagnated a bit in book 2 with just a LOAD of world building, lore and exposition. I had hoped that was done in book 2, so we could get on with the story. Book 3 (Valget) was basically Arkin going from adult to adult and being explained a lot of new names and more lore. Yes, he did a couple of choices, but they were only gateways to more lore lessons.
I have to question, if this is a series meant to be 4 books long, will we EVER need to know all these names, terms and lore? I doubt it. So why spend page upon page teaching us? If you were to remove all text that is mainly exposition, there wouldn't be much text left at all.
The author's real talent lies in his excellent illustrations. Drop dead gorgeous palette and very distinct style, simply put beautiful artwork. If the story had been more character and action driven, less history lessons, more "show, don't tell"(!), I'd have enjoyed it a lot more.
