She loves her job cooking at an elder day centre and her little flat, but it’s fair to say her life is a little short of hobbies and friends. Since she was young Seren has felt safer close to home, but now she’s a thirty-something divorcee, it’s time for a change.

Change arrives in the shape of alarmingly clever collie Kez, who Seren offers to take in ‘temporarily’, and kind but mysterious new colleague Ned. But as Ned and Kez tempt Seren out of her shell, it means facing her fears. And when Andrew finally reveals the secrets of their childhood, Seren’s need for safety suddenly makes sense.

Jane Lovering was born in Devon, England but, following extradition procedures, now lives in Yorkshire. She has five children, four cats, two dogs and doesn't believe in housework so the bacteria and dust are approaching sentience and now rank among the pets. Incidentally, she doesn’t believe in ironing either, and the children all learned self-defensive cookery at early ages. She works in a local school and also teaches creative writing, which are extreme ways of avoiding the washing up.

Published since 2008, she writes romantic comedies which are often described as ‘quirky’. One day she's going to find out what that means. Jane is a member of the Romantic Novelists' Association and has a first class honours degree in creative writing. In 2012, her novel Please Don't Stop the Music won the Romantic Novel of the Year Award by the RNA.

Jane Lovering’s books never fail to make me smile. Even the dedication for this one made me laugh!

Encouraged by her older brother to try online dating which results in not a single match makes Seren realise just how small her world is. She’s not exactly agoraphobic but is content with her routines and not stepping out of them. I felt for her when she said that perhaps she should get a life, find some hobbies beyond watching TV and reading. It was lovely watching her broaden her horizons and come out her shell encouraged by Kez and new co-worker Ned.

Kez is a border collie which Seren accidentally finds herself looking after and trying to hide in her tiny flat. I’ve never owned a dog and don’t think I ever would but I did, it would be a Border Collie, the same breed as Kez. As is so often the case in real life, this was hugely beneficial to them both. Kez had someone who genuinely cared for and looked after him and in turn, encouraged Seren to be a bit braver than normal. Dogs need to be exercised each day of course so even though Seren didn’t particularly enjoy the great outdoors, she has no option.

Jane Lovering writes so well about her characters’ innermost thoughts and feelings that I always am completely on the side her heroines and Seren was no exception. She feels very real and relatable. Ned was also a lovely character and I wondered what his backstory was as I read, why this caring and capable man had left London for a handyman’s job in Yorkshire. I was very intrigued to find out the pasts of both Seren and Ned and of course to find out if they just might be right for each other.

I also enjoyed the recipes scattered throughout the book, written in Seren’s quirky, cheerful style. Even those were funny. For example the recipe for Bolognese sauce (aka mince-and-awful-veg) suggests including the “bits of veg that are lurking in the bottom of the fridge and looking a bit wrinkly and like they want using up”. I quite fancy making the Earl Grey scones actually.

The Recipe for Happiness is another gorgeous read from Jane Lovering. It made me smile, it gave me a lump in my throat and it left me feeling happy.

Seren really wants to open her own cooking school. For some reason she has a fear of being left behind. While cooking at a elder center she meets Ned and adopts a dog too. Can she get past whatever is holding her back?
I liked the story but it was also a bit depressing and sad.

I love a Jane Lovering book, she writes so wonderfully about real lives, relatable characters and situations. They are full of humour, as well as serious issues too but always the perfect balance so drama/sadness and joy/humour. Jane has her own unique style, one that I find full of heart, emotion, so engaging and enjoyable her books are just full of love.

I loved the characters, both Seren and Ned are interesting, vulnerable characters, with their past experiences I think are a lot stronger than they think they are, revelations with all good storytelling takes time but the charm, heart, warmth, charisma of both characters shines through as the story is told, they make a wonderful heroine/hero pairing. Like all good lead characters they need a great supporting cast which is definitely more than offered here but the star of that role is definitely, Kez, you’ll have to read to meet him and fall in love too.

I really liked the inclusion of the recipes threaded throughout the book, full of Seren’s humour I thought they were a nice touch. The setting of Yorkshire is perfectly described byJane, so much so you feel like if you stepped outside your door you’d be there (of course in you live there that’s a given!) This is a thoroughly heartwarming read, full of emotion, humour, great characters, dogs, romance, community, I’m not sure what else I can say that will make you run to read this, but you’ll be all the better for it.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I am particularly drawn to books set in the English countryside but I must say this had everything you could want in a story love, family, community and a furbaby named Kez…

When Seren’s brother Andrew signs her up to Yorkshire Dating, only for them to recommend that she ‘gets a life’ before they find her a match, Seren has to admit that they may have a point.

This is a heartwarming story that is full of emotions and I will definitely read other books by this author.

I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from Boldwood Books and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Seren’s brother is concerned about how small her world has become – not quite agoraphobic, but desperately uncomfortable when forced outside her daily routine working as a cook at Pickering’s daycare centre for the elderly and the small flat that comes with the job, she’s exhausted the possibilities of on-line dating (even they’ve suggested she should get a life, with just TV and reading making it impossible to find her a match). And that’s how she finds herself distinctly out of her comfort zone, at Dungeons and Dragons evenings with a large group of hairy and tattooed bikers, then committed to helping out her brother’s dog trainer friend. That’s how Kez comes into her life – an abandoned border collie who needs a temporary home, and who she keeps hidden (as much as she possibly can – Kez sometimes makes that difficult…) from “the management” at the centre.

And a dog, of course, as well as being great company and someone to care for, needs exercise and time outdoors – and she’s helped with that by her lovely co-worker Ned, who begins to show possibilities of becoming rather more than a friend. But he’s a bit of a mystery too – working as a handyman when he’s clearly capable of more, she thinks he might be homeless and sleeping in his car, perhaps even recently released from prison. His full story slowly emerges – as does Seren’s – along with the reasons that they’re both such damaged people, finding the support they need in each other. And they really do need to pull together as the centre is threatened with closure – it’s a lifeline for the individuals who spend their days there, and the open day that’s increasingly looking to be a washout might be their last chance to save it.

I just adored this book – the two individuals at its centre who entirely won my heart (and, of course, the lovely Kez), but also the wider cast of wonderfully drawn characters. There’s plenty of humour, both gentle and laugh-out-loud – the author has a style that’s entirely her own, that I unfailingly love – but the more emotional content is just perfect too, the whole book infused with warmth and filled with love. I so enjoyed the interactions at the day centre, the way she drew the individuals so superbly, the sadness that many of them were dumped there by their families or left to be collected like unwanted parcels – the story of Mimi, uncommunicative and rigid in her chair near the garden, particularly tugged at the heartstrings and was just beautifully handled. The Yorkshire setting is, of course, as perfectly drawn as ever – and there are recipes in this one too, written by Seren, filled with her quirky asides and observations, and never containing nuts or anything remotely exotic that the folk at the day centre would find entirely unacceptable.

This was another wonderful read from an author who never disappoints – and yes, you’ve guessed it, it might just be my new favourite. Go on, add it to your reading list – you’re going to love it too!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Beautiful story with lovely, interesting, fresh characters, “The Recipe for Happiness”, by Jane Lovering (Boldwood Books), shows people dealing with serious issues without losing a positive outlook on life.
I loved both Seren and Ned, they are relatable, complex, yet down-to-earth, pragmatic characters.
The way the romantic relationship progressed was also compelling, a slow burn with some secrets, surprises, healing and a rambunctious, irresistible dog.
The story is fun, unique, with some sad parts and other very funny moments. The author’s sense of humor and the fact both leads don’t take themselves too seriously, despite the dramatic experiences, is refreshing.
I liked how the revelations about both leads take time to happen.
Ned’s understated charm and charisma, the painful experience he went through – poignantly actual – and his selflessness are compelling. The character’s vulnerability and darkness are weighed with his practical and sensible perspective on people and life.
Seren’s “contained life”, her dedication to the daycare center and the seniors, the insecurities and doubts, make her a wonderful heroine.
The secondary characters, the dog, Kez, the center, the landscape, the recipes, all make this a very amusing read.

It was OK and would give the book 2.5 stars. It just felt like something was missing. I didn't love any of the characters. I hated how Andrew and Greg constantly told Seren that she needed to get a life with hobbies. Greg has her join his Dungeon and Dragons group. Andrew has her help a dog trainer. This made no sense, since she doesn't even have a dog. It's such random stuff, which Seren has no interest in. They know she loves to cook and bake, why not find something she enjoys doing. Andrew knew the reason behind Seren's fear of getting lost, so why didn't he tell her the truth years ago. Ned and Seren's interactions together are so awkward. She's convinced that he lives in a car, is a murderer or spent time in prison. Possibly all three. Ned and Seren were perfect for each other, since they both were struggling with issues. Ned wants to help Seren overcome her problems, but isn't doing anything to help his. Kez was definitely my favorite. Seren's recipes sounded delicious.

Recommend giving the book a try. I really wanted to love it as much as the author's previous books that I read. Loved the cover of the book. Look forward to reading more books by the author.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Boldwood Books through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

If there’s one word that I can use to describe Jane’s writing, it would have to be atmospheric. Her books immediately transport me to the fictional world that she has created, and I instantly feel at home. So, this time I found myself at an elder day centre in Pickering, Yorkshire, baking treats for the service users.
The characters at the centre were wonderful and I loved meeting them and their idiosyncrasies. Our protagonist, Seren, is complicated and that is exactly what I love about Jane’s writing. There are always curve balls to dodge and Seren is a particularly big one. She has no knowledge of the reason why, but she has a fear of travelling on unknown roads to unknown places. This leaves her with a rather small life.
With encouragement from her brother and his partner, she agrees to try online dating but creating her profile leads to issues as it becomes clear that she needs to get a life. Duly tasked, she embarks on a dog training adventure that leads to her temporarily fostering a very clever Collie named Kez.
Of course, this is romantic fiction and there’s the rather mysterious Ned helping out at the centre. Seren cannot understand what his carefully guarded past is hiding, but she knows that she’s drawn to him and maybe even trusts him.
This is another wonderful book from Jane, and I absolutely loved every minute. From the wonderful service users at the day centre to the Dungeons and Dragons rock band, there’s a lot packed into this story. But it’s the humanity that shines through. The gentle blooming of Mimi, the kindness of Ned, and Seren’s brother, Andrew, finding the strength to share with her some family secrets. All told with a careful hand and an abundance of empathy.
Of course, as I have come to expect from Jane’s books, Yorkshire plays out as an additional character. It’s easy to see Jane’s love for her home county and her descriptions left me picturing the sweeping landscapes and beautiful walks. I could almost hear the streams tinkling nearby.
I think this may well be a new favourite book from one of my absolute favourite authors.

The Recipe for Happiness is another heartwarming and charming love story by Jane Lovering.

Goodness, Jane knows how to write a heartwarming love story that just hits you in the heart. Jane has this amazing ability to write stories that have you feeling all these wonderful emotions. You find yourself laughing one moment, and then the next, your heart is pitter-pattering in swoony excitement. I also adore the unexpected twists or moments Jane throws into her stories; I always find myself saying “no way” and frantically turning the page so I can find out what happens next. This book is just so easy to sink into. The story wraps around you like a cozy blanket; you never want to leave it. Jane includes lush and vivid descriptions of Yorkshire that had me feeling like I was there or, more specifically, wishing I was there. I also adore the recipes at the beginning of each chapter; it was a fun extra bit to put into the book.

Seren’s character instantly felt real to me. Her vulnerabilities and insecurities resonate with you; you just know that her character is about to go on a journey of tremendous growth. I adored watching Seren come out of her shell, do things that make her scared, and make new friends (some of them furry) along the way. Kez, the adorable and clever collie, might have stolen my heart, and I love the warmth and humour this furry guy brought to the story.

The romance in this book is sweet and charming. Seren and Ned’s relationship starts as colleagues, moves to friendships, and ends in a gooey romance. I like Ned’s character and could instantly see that he was going to be a good fit for Seren. Also loved that there was this bit of mystery surrounding Ned. Clearly, there is more to this man than he is letting on, but it takes Seren a bit to finally uncover the truth. But I love guessing his secrets with Seren. I enjoyed watching these two get closer to each other and slowly develop that romantic relationship I know they are fated to have.

The Recipe for Happiness is bursting with humour, love, charm, and so many unforgettable moments.

Award-winning author Jane Lovering is at her charming and poignant best with her latest novel, The Recipe for Happiness.

Seren finds herself having to take a long, hard look at herself when she is rejected by a dating agency. Yorkshire Dating had informed her that before they find her a match, she must first get some life experience and the thirty-something divorcee concedes that they might have a point. An introvert who is at her happiest at home, Seren’s life revolves around her job at an elder day centre and her tiny flat. She doesn’t have any hobbies and friends are few and far between. The time has come for Seren to stop hiding in the shadows and to step out into the light – and luckily for her, her colleague Ned and his gorgeous collie, Kez are keen to offer her a helping hand.

As Seren and Ned grow closer and closer, she realises that she needs to be honest with him – and with herself. Seren needs to face her fears and take a leap of faith and give herself a chance to be happy – even if it means facing up to some uncomfortable truths and harsh realities about her life and her past. Can Seren ever lead a fulfilling life? Will she at long last have the life she has always deserved? Or will her newfound confidence and happiness be snatched away from her grasp just when she thought she had it all figured out?

The fabulous Jane Lovering always delivers a magical tale that will make her readers laugh and cry in equal measure. The Recipe for Happiness is a stellar read that touched my heart and had me roaring with laughter. Written with candour, sensitivity and plenty of heart, The Recipe for Happiness is a terrific novel about finding your voice, healing from old wounds and becoming the person you were always meant to be that ticks all the right boxes and left me feeling hopeful and uplifted.

Jane Lovering is such a wonderful writer and with The Recipe for Happiness has once again penned a first-rate book that is simply outstanding.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Seren is quite happy with her current life. She cooks, cleans, and supervises a senior care/drop-in center while having a an apartment above the center free. Her brother, Andrew, who has recently wed and wants a happily-ever-after for his sister is adamant that isn’t happy. After signing her up for a dating service, he also gets her to commit to doing things outside of her comfort zone like play Dungeons & Dragons, which she has no interest in, or assisting with dog training when she’s skeptical of dogs. But between new hire, Ned, and Kez, a dog she’s reluctantly fostering, Seren begins to move outside of her comfort zone, albeit slowly. Her extreme discomfort forces her to wonder if there is something in her past that has kept her from venturing far, from living the life she deserves.

While The Recipe for Happiness is quite a bit more serious than the other Jane Lovering novels I’ve read with both main characters facing issues of gravity, the addition of the very intelligent Kez, a border collie who Seren aptly anthropomorphizes, as well as the patrons of the center help to keep the novel from being sinking into doldrums. That said, there are aspects that are sad: the acknowledgement that when one grows old, one is frequently in the way; treating dogs as disposable; the effects of covid; amongst others.

Seren is mostly upbeat and pragmatic with a wry way of looking at things. Ned is earnest and good-humored. They complement each other.

The author has interwoven recipes throughout. One stand-out is Earl Grey Scones in which the sultanas/raisins have been soaked in Earl Grey tea and a little of the soaking liquid is added to the batter. Definitely something to try.

The Recipe for Happiness is layered, thoughtful, and hopeful, and may just have recipes for happiness within its pages.

My Opinion

Jane Lovering is now a must read for me, they never fail to leave me smiling. Seren works as a cook at the local day care centre for the elderly, living above the centre she doesn't get out much - even a dating site rejected her. This book was such a lovely read as both Seren and Ned were relatable characters. As the pair become closer, Seren begins to wonder if there could be something between them.

To add to the enjoyment of this book, Jane has put some recipes between the chapters. A great, heart-warming read.

Seren is a live-in housekeeper and cook at an older person's drop-in centre in a small Yorkshire village. Her brother Andrew and his husband Greg are constantly trying to get Seren to come out of her shell and meet people (men) but she's comfortable with staying close to home, using her culinary skills to cook for the rambunctious guests, even if their palates reject anything remotely different (like adding cheese to mashed potato). The trouble is, Seren never goes anywhere other than shopping in the local shops and visiting Andrew once a week. Truth be told she's scared of getting lost.

Then one day a new employee joins the drop-in centre. Ned is a general handyman, but his eyes suggest a bigger story. Seren worries he could be homeless, or at least living in his car, or maybe he's just been released from prison. Initially prickly towards each other, these two lost souls develop a tentative friendship. But it takes Seren's accidental adoption of an abandoned dog for her to start expanding her horizons.

OMG the angst! Ned had angst, Seren had angst, arguably Andrew had angst. I do get that maybe it takes two broken souls to coax each other into a better life but really did there have to be this much angst?

I genuinely had no idea where this was going. At one point I suspected that Ned was actually the dog in disguise (or vice versa)!

Also, I felt genuinely aggrieved that Ned felt in a position to give Seren ultimatums about confronting her issues when he was clearly running away from his own.

Anyway, I liked it but I didn't love it. I could have done without the recipes and I felt it ended a bit abruptly.

3.75- I am very drawn to books about chefs and kitchens (I hate cooking, so it’s funny that this is the case) and the title of this drew me in. It was cute, but it didn’t quite hit the mark for me.
Seren lives a very quiet life. She works as a chef and a housekeeper for an adult day care center where she is surrounded by wacky, funny, and caring octogenarians and nonagenarians. While Seren isn’t agoraphobic, she has a tremendous fear of getting lost, so it helps that she lives in the flat above the kitchen of the day care center. When Ned, a handsome and kind guy, joins the day care staff as their van driver and handyman, Seren begins to wonder if there is more to life than just the walls of her home and work.
Overall I enjoyed this, but at times the writing fell flat and the ending felt rushed. I had a lot of compassion for Seren, but I felt her development happened way too quickly, but this goes hand in hand with the rushed ending. I loved all of the seniors at the day care center. I found all of the scenes with them to be quite humorous and I hope I can have their outlook on life when I grow older.
After every couple of chapters there was a very long recipe, and honestly I could have done without them. The directions in the recipe were so drawn out, it made reading it tedious. There was one baked good for which I really wanted a recipe (blondies with raspberry and white chocolate) but that one wasn’t included.

The Recipe for Happiness by Jane Lovering.

This is a great heartwarming story about how friends and animals can change your life in a good way. Seren is a divorced thirty something young woman who works for an elderly day care center. She has grown accustomed to work and home with nothing in between. Her brother Andrew, has signed her up to find a match on a dating site. They however feel that she needs to have more experience in life. Here comes Ned who is the new handy man and bus driver for the day care center., and his adorable collie Kez. Ned and Seren seem to have more in common than they initially realize. Seren starts to feel a connection with Ned and a trust forms between them. As things progress, Andrew tells Seren some things about their past that she was unaware of but it puts things into perspective for her. Ned becomes closer to a Seren and the two begin to help each other through the challenges that their pasts have created in order to move forward with their future. Jane Lovering is well known for her romantic fiction novels and her ability to write story’s that are compelling and beautiful with characters that are very well developed make me feel as though I am a part of the book. I honestly can see myself in there while reading because the descriptions are perfect. This was. Ot my first book by Lovering and it won’t be my last….I hope.

5 out of 5 stars

Seren leads an enjoyable but narrow existence as the cook and caretaker of a day centre for the elderly in Pickering, on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. This is a popular tourist spot because of the steam train that runs to Whitby on the coast. She has a problem with going anywhere she does not know as she fears getting lost, but has no idea why.
Ned arrives at the centre as handyman and minibus driver. Seren is drawn to him, but thinks he is hiding something about his past. They both have issues to work through, but first have to open up and share their problems. This is only the beginning, as they both know there is no instant cure, but with each other’s help and understanding they may just begin to move forwards into a happier future together. Jane Lovering treads a fine line between light-hearted humour and serious mental health issues – Seren and Ned’s problems are not trivialised but treated realistically.
I’m not a dog person, but Kez is a wonderful addition to the story, an intelligent and intuitive collie who makes such a difference to Seren’s life. Without giving away too much, my favourite scene is the Open Day. Take my word for it, it will bring a smile to your face and a tear to your eye all at the same time. The characters are well drawn and believable, though I did get a bit confused at first as to who was who, and the Yorkshire setting lifts the story to another level. I am a big fan of Jane Lovering’s books and always look forward to the next one. Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for a digital copy to review.

I really enjoyed this gentle little thinker of a book.

Seren is quite happy working as a cook in a respite facility for the elderly. That she lives onsite as well and doesn't have a LOT of friends who are under 80, doesn't concern her much. She is frightened of going too far from home and so she tells herself that she is perfectly fine as she is.

Her brother Andrew is happily coupled up and when he suggests to Seren that she really needs to go out and find herself a partner, she doesn't take it well. He introduces her to some friends of his and they play games but it isn't really her thing. She joins an online dating agency and they tell her she is too boring.

Ned is the handyman who works with Seren, but even though he is perfectly nice, she feels like there are things about him that she just doesn't know.

The story of these two damaged people is the basis of this story. It is not angst filled by any means, there were also laughs to be had in this book as well, some of them loud chuckles and others wry grins.

Hard to categorise, but it felt like these two were really special just because they were such genuine human beings, flaws and all.

Of course, the star of the show was Kez, the border collie. Completely adorable and very, very smart :)

Also appreciated the recipes! If only all recipe books were written like this :)

5 stars from me.

Jane Lovering’s books are always an auto-read for me, because she balances humour, realistic situations and serious topics so well. Once again this is the case with Seren, who thinks she should probably try to broaden her horizons (at least if her brother has his way) but theory and actuality are two very different things. As it turns out, her under-duress attempts have unexpected long-term results and the most important potential change to her life happens right under her nose.
All of the characters, major and minor, are so deftly drawn that they are easy to visualise - Holly and her elbows, the dignified but silent Mimi are just two of the minor ones that stand out - and they all invoke feelings in the reader from amusement to sympathy to annoyance. The laugh-inducing one-liners are there in abundance, but the counterpoint is the examination of mental health, PTSD in particular. Both Seren’s and Ned’s stories, when revealed, are heartbreaking. Even the happy ending comes with a caveat: mental health issues are always going to be a work in progress, their life situations will doubtless change, they’ll have to work at their happiness. I appreciate that balance. I also appreciate the recipes that pop up throughout, which is a lovely added touch!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance review copy. All opinions are my own.

Suggests she 'gets a life' so she can add more
To help them find her the perfect match
Or they'll drop her - that's the catch!

However, Seren isn't sure what she can do
She loves her job but needs hobbies and friends, too.
She hates going anywhere she doesn't know
So she stays home and new places doesn't go.

When her brother sets her up to help a friend out
With dog training, she certainly had her doubt.
She never expected to end up with the abandoned Kez
Who obviously cares for her and does as she says!

This border collie and new co-worker, Ned, too
Have her daring to venture to some places that are new.
But both have their secrets and problems to face
Why does she fear for her safety when in a new place?

Revelations, secrets, surprises and romance
All are possible when you give love a chance.
But finding about the past can help to discover
What triggers reactions so you can support each other.

An elderly community, who want to live life to the full,
A day centre and recipes that certainly aren't dull.
I like the way recipes are shared in Seren's voice
Giving you options and lots of choice.

A gorgeous story filled with recipes and feelings
A heartwarming story of love and healing.
For my complementary copy, I say a huge thank you,
As I share with you this, my honest review.

Desperate to help Seren find a match, she is signed up for another useless app called Yorkshire Dating. Her tenacious brother Andrew is only trying to help, but it feels like since he got married he is laser focused on his sister doing the same. Raised by Andrew after their parents tragically passed away, he often acts more like a worried father than a brother. Seren has a passion for cooking and works at an elder care day center where she entices the patrons with comfort food, delicious baked treats and some serious rounds of scrabble. Seren lives above the center in a small flat. Her world has become very small and that is just the way she likes it. Seren has never been able to overcome the severe anxiety she experiences with new things and crowded places. Determined to force Seren into some sort of hobby, Andrew arranges for her to assist his friend at a dog training group. That is when Kez, a fluffy and adventurous Collie enters her life. At the same time her new colleague Ned, a rather mysterious fellow, slowly brings Seren out of her shell. The older folks she has grown so fond of continue to teach her the most important life lesson of all, it is up to you to find the joy every single day. Scattered with delicious recipes and set in the charming English countryside, this is a heartwarming read you will not want to miss!

Brought up by her elder brother Andrew Seren enjoys her job at an elderly day care centre, however feels as if there is always something holding her back. The arrival of Ned, minibus driver and general handyman plus Kez, a rescue collie, shakes up her life and starts to broaden her very restricted life. Every so often I come across a book that affects me in a surprising way. Seren's almost agoraphobia severely restricts her ability to travel anywhere new, plus Ned's mysterious background (ex-con living wild?) are the keystone of the story, but the wonderful cast of elderly visitors to the centre (some of them not much older than myself) really add to the feel of the book. As the story progresses both their backgrounds become clearer and their mutual attraction grows, but you are left wondering whether they will actually get together. This is certainly one of the books that I've enjoyed most so far this year, definitely worth reading if you like something a bit different. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influenced my review of the book.

I loved all the characters in this story. Seren is a complicated character who is choosing to avoid anything she is unsure of and who is leading a fairly solitary life. Not that she is without interaction with others. The old people who come to the drop in centre which Seren helps to run, are in some ways, ignored by most of society and sent off to the day care. They find Seren and Ned ready to listen to them and show them respect. There is plenty of humour attached to all of them. Each has his or her own foibles and individual quirks. Seren needs all the patience she can muster.

It is clear from the beginning that there is more to Ned than meets the eye. It transpires that both Seren and Ned have had some traumatic events in their past. The drop in centre is as much a haven for them as for visitors. Of course, my favourite character has to be Kez, the gorgeous collie who comes to live with Seren. She is incorrigible and as sharp as a tack. Friendship, facing up to the past and taking life at the pace that is comfortable are all threads in this romcom. There are some touching and emotional moments to offset the humour. It all feels very believable and down to earth.

in short: Facing fears and moving on
Thanks to the publisher for a copy of the book

The Recipe for Happiness follows Seren, 30-something divorcee and cook at the local elderly centre, on her journey to 'get a life', after realising her safe and contained life isn't as full as she once thought.

Seren reminded me of me during the 2020 lockdowns; afraid of the world and the people in it. Due to this, seeing her personal journey into a more confident Seren made me happy as I feel it mirrored my own personal journey into the happier, healthier version of myself that I am now. The one who doesn't let anxiety control her. I was also a big fan of Ned, the fae-like love interest, and the way he pulls Seren out of her shell. He is simply lovely, and I think they are perfectly matched.

Overall, I adored this book and the way it made me feel. Even whilst dealing with difficult topics, it managed to put a positive spin on it that made this an all-round cheery book. There were even recipes interspersed between random chapters, which I definitely want to try out! The only negative I could give about this book is that the ending seemed..abrupt almost? It was nice, but I could have done with an epilogue.

Seren is content in her routine life, overseeing a senior care center and living in an apartment just above it. Despite her satisfaction, her newly-wedded brother, Andrew, believes she's missing out on life. He nudges her into unfamiliar territories, from online dating to playing Dungeons & Dragons, and even persuading her to aid in dog training. Through interactions with Ned, a new employee, and Kez, a dog she's hesitantly looking after, Seren gradually steps out of her bubble. Her discomfort makes her reflect on her past and what might have held her back.

The story is a heartwarming journey of hope, promoting messages of acceptance and inclusivity. It features a diverse set of characters, each with their unique challenges, transcending age, gender, and background. Having grown up under her brother's care after their parents' passing, Seren has always kept herself guarded. Yet, with Ned's support, who has battles of his own, and Kez's unwavering loyalty, they find healing, rekindling a zest for life and love. Their story unfolds within a vibrant community, emphasizing the healing power of companionship and second chances at happiness.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
The blurb attracted me, and the book started well, setting the scene of Seren's daily life and her relationship with her brother and his husband (they want her to find love). When Ned arrived it was obvious he was to be the love interest - although it's really the dog, Kez, a lovely character! This isn't a long book by romcom standards but I felt as though it progressed very slowly. This wasn't helped by the inclusion of the recipes (which didn't feature in the blurb) that were written conversationally, as though we were being taught. I did like the surprising details revealed in the later pages but I thought the end of the story was very abrupt, as though the author had reached the end of the required word count rather than completing the tale. I'd have enjoyed a few pages of epilogue.

A truly heartwarming read, full of hope and optimism but with a fundamental message of acceptance snd inclusivity!
A wonderfully diverse range of characters many having their own issues/struggles regardless of age, gender, upbringing etc.
Seren leads a very insular life since being raised by her elder brother after her parents died, living and working in the same building and not venturing far from home.
Ned her work colleague at the elderly persons day centre has his own struggles to contend with but with the help of the adorable Kez they are brought together and in doing so start to heal, live, and love again.
A wonderful eclectic community, friends, family and a canine companion make for a really therapeutic healing environment and a second chance at life and love!
Thank you netgalley for this early read.

A delightful story with believable characters, emotion and humour, making this an engaging read. Seren lives a limited life, unsure why. She is a complex and compassionate woman. I was eager to discover her story and share her emotional journey to happiness. The cast of characters is insightfully created and recognisable, each with its unique story. Ned is a lost soul, but he and Seren connect positively, making their relationship easy to invest in. Kez, the border collie, is integral to the story, and I loved reading about Kez's exploits. This story has secrets, friendship and romance, which take the reader on a memorable emotional journey full of laughter, love and life-changing moments.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
