Hanna is a police officer in a small Swedish town. She has just finished with a complicated case when she and her team get word that there has been a murder. There is a parallel story about a young woman in a cultlike religion with an abusive husband, and the two stories come together in a surprising way. The bleak and snowy landscape makes this a great Nordic Noir escape for fans of the genre. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.

Verborgen in de schaduw van Viveca Sten is het tweede deel in de Are moorden reeks. Recent verscheen hiervan de serie op Netflix. Ik las de eerste twee delen voordat ik de serie keek, dus ik kon zelf de personages en de omgeving nog invullen. We maken opnieuw kennis met Hanna en Daniel. Enkele maanden na de gebeurtenissen uit Verborgen in de sneeuw krijgt het duo een nieuwe zaak toegewezen. Ditmaal wordt een olympisch skiër dood aangetroffen in de bossen. Mishandeld en vastgebonden. Daarnaast lezen we ook over een meisje Rebecka, die haar leven helemaal anders is dan ze voor ogen heeft gehad. Wat de link tussen beide zaken is, is lange tijd niet duidelijk en het is voor de lezer fijn om zelf op zoek te gaan naar de link. Je blijft zo steeds doorlezen omdat de spanning op die manier goed opgebouwd wordt. De hoofdstukken worden ingedeeld naargelang de dagen vorderen in het onderzoek. De personages worden verder uitgewerkt en je kan als lezer een band beginnen opbouwen. Verborgen in de schaduw is net zoals het eerste deel een topper onder de Scandinavische thrillers en is zeker een must om te lezen als je van dit genre houdt. Ik beloon het dan ook zeer graag met 4.5⭐️

Jag älskar Viveca Stens sätt att skriva och jag fullkomligt slukar hennes berättelser som utspelar sig i Åre. Hon är väldigt duktig på att skriva karaktärer som man fastnar för direkt. För mig blir inte mordet det viktigaste utan det är snarare en drivkraft för de olika trådarna i berättelsen. Och det är så snyggt sammanvävt i slutändan. Trots hemskheterna som utspelar sig i Åre så blir jag väldigt sugen på att besöka platserna som beskrivs (även om vissa platser är fiktiva eller väldigt ändrade jämfört med verkligheten.)
Det är uppfriskande att läsa om poliserna Hanna och Daniel, samt deras kollegor, och att de inte är några perfekta människor utan kämpar på med sina privatliv samtidigt som de bedriver en mordutredning.

In het prachtige skioord Åre is moord zeldzaam, en al helemaal zoals die op voormalig olympisch skiër Johan Andersson, die vastgebonden en doodgeslagen in het bos wordt aangetroffen. Maar wat heeft zo'n woede kunnen uitlokken? En bij wie?
Terwijl rechercheurs Hanna Ahlander en Daniel Lindskog zich een weg proberen te banen door de groeiende lijst van verdachten, ontdekken ze dat de moord op Andersson slechts het begin is van een verontrustende, nog grotere zaak…
'Verborgen in de schaduw' is het tweede deel met Hanna Ahlander en Daniel Lindskog in de hoofdrol. Het verhaal begint met een spannende inleiding, namelijk de vondst van een lichaam. Het blijkt om Johan Andersson te gaan.
Vervolgens spring je ook regelmatig naar het verleden en hier lees je ook een interessante verhaallijn. In het begin had ik totaal geen idee wat dit met het heden te maken zou hebben, maar naar mate het verhaal vorderde werden dingen steeds duidelijker.
Personages Hanna en Daniel zelf zijn ondertussen ook heel erg interessant, want je leest ook over hun privélevens, en ondertussen moeten ze deze vreemde moordzaak zien op te lossen. Wie wilde Johan dood hebben?
Even was ik bang dat dit verhaal heel voorspelbaar zou worden. Alles wees namelijk naar één persoon en dat zou ik persoonlijk heel jammer hebben gevonden, want dat was té makkelijk geweest. Gelukkig kwam daar dan toch nog een plottwist en dat zorgde er voor dat ik dit boek tevreden dichtsloeg.
Je vliegt door dit verhaal heen. Niet alleen omdat het boeiend is, de schrijfstijl en korte hoofdstukken zorgden er ook voor. En natuurlijk de sprongen tussen de verhaallijnen. Ik kan dan ook wel zeggen dat ik "fan" ben van deze serie en laat het volgende deel maar komen!

A return to Sweden for the second book in this series which sees another gruesome murder happening in the peaceful ski resort of Are.
The story splits into two threads. In the first, the Police are searching for the murderer of Johan Andersson, a popular former ski champion, found bludgeoned to death with his body left to be covered in the falling snow. The second follows the fate of Rebecka Norshammer, wife of a deputy pastor in a cult like religious community who is being abused by him. At first there does not seem to be anything linking the two, but that changes as the book progresses.
The book includes some well written characters, in particular DI Daniel Lindskog and DI Hanna Ahlander. Since the first book, they have settled into a comfortable professional relationship after initially being thrown together and having to learn to work round each others strengths while solving a distressing crime. There are some interesting side characters too who make up the police team and look to become more prominent figures in future books in the series.
Members of the team all seem to be experiencing personal problems and these bring a realism to the story. However, their issues don't detract from the main plot which sees each of them pull out all the stops to find the murderer.
These books will appeal to Scandi noir fans as the setting very much suits the storyline, providing a cold and clinical atmosphere that is in keeping with the savagery of the crimes. There are a number of potential suspects for the team to consider and the final outcome is a bit of a surprise but still believable. Recommended for crime readers.

”Dalskuggan” är andra delen i Viveca Stens serie ”Åremorden”. Och detta är ännu en bra bok i serien. Jag har tagit alla tillfällen jag kunnat att lyssna på boken som bjuder på spänning och dramatik i ett högt tempo. Poliserna för en kamp mot klockan för att hitta den skyldige mördaren. Vi får återse Hanna Ahlander som vi lärde känna i första boken ”Offermakaren” och hennes kollega på Årepolisen Daniel Lindskog. De tampas med onda krafter i frikyrkan, om dominerande män och med att få ihop yrkes- och privatliv och allt utspelar sig i en vacker vintermiljö där onda krafter slår hål på idyllen.
Det här är riktigt bra! En spännande intrig som kombineras med polisens jakt på den skyldige och utredarnas privatliv. En bra kombo! Och så skrämmande skildring av hur kvinnor tystas av dominerade män i maktposition. Jag gillar serien och kommer genast att fortsätta lyssna på nästa del ”Botgöraren”.

3.5 stars. I liked the second book more than the first, and the only reason I didn't give this one 4 stars was because I managed to figure out a big part of the plot about 100 pages in. I like my murder mysteries to leave me hanging and guessing until the last page, but this was quite easy to predict. Non the less I really liked it, the plot was awesome and wonderfully tied together. I love how Veronica writes, it's so easy to read and I'm rlying through the book in no time. I'm excited to read the next part, whenever I manage to get my hands on that one.

Ich schwanke zwischen 2 und 3 Sternen, leider hat mich Teil 2 deutlich enttäuscht. Eine echte Verbindung zu dem Ermittlerteam kam bei mir - trotz vieler „überflüssiger“ Passagen zu deren Privatleben - immer noch nicht auf. Darüber hinaus ist der Schreibstil (mag ggf. auch an der Übersetzung liegen) redundant und teilweise recht flapsig. Fällt der Autorin keine andere Art und Weise ein, ihre Vernehmungen voran zu treiben, als Suggestivfragen, nur um dann deutlich zu betonen, dass diese natürlich eigentlich nicht gut sind? Bei der vierten solchen Situation habe ich aufgehört zu zählen. Darüber hinaus fand ich leider auch den Kriminalfall an sich sehr vorhersehbar, die Auflösung dann trotzdem viel zu kurz und knapp.

A Complex, Difficult, and Gripping Police Procedural
Anna Larrson is driving her seven-year-old son, Hugo, to Dived for slalom training. Hugo must relieve himself, so Anna stops in a wide part of the road. Hugo returns too quickly to the car and tells his mother that a hurt man is lying in the snow. Anna does not want to be late for the slalom training, but Hugo does not lie. Anna exits the car to see for herself. She finds a man with his hands bound behind him. His face is bloody. He has a severe wound to the back of his head. From here, a complex murder investigation starts.
This novel is the second in the Åre Murders series. The main storyline has two threads. The first is the investigation of Johan Andersson’s murder. The second thread tells the story of Rebecka Nordhammnar’s abusive marriage. Detectives Hanna Ahlander and Daniel Lindskog narrate the investigation. After some progress, the investigation seems to slow down significantly as the victim’s movements could not be determined after he left his business partner. The person seems to have the best motives for wanting his partner dead. The investigation focuses heavily on him. The lead detective, Daniel, has a severe domestic problem with his wife. She is having problems taking care of their baby daughter. Her demands for his time are affecting his work very seriously. I was hooked on this novel very quickly.
Two background threads provide much new information on Hanna and Daniel. Hanna’s background is expanded with her relationship with her sister, who comes to spend some time with her. Daniel’s relationship with his wife, who has severe problems with being a mother trying to cope with her first newborn, provides much insight into Daniel’s response to domestic stress. Professionally, the most significant change is in Hanna’s character. In the first novel, she did some very unprofessional acts. In this novel, the reader will see a maturing detective. There is one B-storyline between one of the detectives in an inappropriate relationship with a witness. Hanna’s previous indiscretions probably won’t come to light, but this detective's actions may turn into a multi-novel B-storyline. It will be interesting to see how it starts. These aspects of the novel increased my enjoyment of reading.
Several intimate scenes are present for the aspects of a novel that can make some readers stop reading. Most instances are simple sentences that it occurred. The one that wasn’t centered on what it meant emotionally. Vulgar and rude language, as well as impious language, occur at a low level. Violence is described almost exclusively after the fact, so it is not as edgy. The translation was excellent without any issues for me. There are some references to the first novel, but I did not see any that required reading the first novel. I had to access the Internet on my e-reader to discover all the novel's locations. I found this very handy. I believe none of these aspects should stop most from reading this novel.
I did not have an issue that I disliked, but the Rebecka Nordhammar thread was puzzling as it appeared not to have any correlation to the Johan Andersson murder investigation. After each chapter in that thread, I kept wondering what was the relevance of this thread. When it became clear, there was a relationship, but as I suspected and not as I expected. I liked Hanna's transformation as he stopped her shenanigans, but she was tempted once. There were no loose ends except what might be a multi-novel B-storyline I mentioned previously. This novel had all the aspects that I enjoy. The investigation is complex and, at times, perplexing. The author has seamlessly woven a rich background and B-storylines with the main storyline. I literally could not stop reading when I needed to sleep. After reading several of her Sandhamn series, the author earned a Must-Read rating for me. If police procedurals interest you, definitely try this Nordic version. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel and am looking forward to reading the next in the series. I rate this novel with five stars.

Den väger lite för lätt i det här sammanhanget, tyvärr. Känns som att jag har läst det förr, många gånger. Den griper inte tag, engagerar mig inte. De två huvudpoliserna känns mest stereotypa, schablonbilder. Men jag uppskattar Åre, Duved och fjällvärlden, och jag kommer att fortsätta följa serien.

Het tweede deel van de Åre moorden serie. En heel gaaf, deze serie wordt verfilmd en komt in februari op Netflix. Ik kan niet wachten!
Hannah heeft zich goed gewend in het dorpje Åre in Noord Zweden. Een rijk skioord is de achtergrond van dit verhaal.
In het eerste deel is Hannah naar Åre gekomen na het einde van haar relatie en tevens het ontslag van haar baan bij de politie van Stockholm. Ze woont in het chalet van haar zus.
Ze begon te werken bij het politiekorps van het dorp na de eerste moord. Maar nu is er al gauw een nieuwe moord. Johan is een bekende skiër en wordt op een avond dood gevonden langs de weg. Hij is bruut in elkaar geslagen. Johan werkt ook samen met zijn maat Linus als loodgieter in hun eigen bedrijf.
Rebecka is pas 27 jaar oud, als ze onder ogen moet zien dat de omstandigheden waarin ze leeft verre van ideaal zijn. Ze woont samen met haar man Ole en ze zijn kinderloos. Ole is predikant bij hun religieuze community 'Het Licht des Levens'. Kan ze ontsnappen?
Wat deze twee verhaallijnen met elkaar te maken hebben, daar kom je gauw genoeg achter. Je leest vanuit Rebecka haar jeugd en haar huwelijk met Ole en verder over de periode 2020-2021.
Hannah werkt samen met Daniel en het team weer rond de klok om de dader van de moord te vinden.
Ook Daniel krijgt ruimte in dit deel. Hij en zijn vriendin Ida hebben het moeilijk door de werkdruk van Daniel.

Het tweede deel gaat verder in op de personages van deel 1. Er zit echt groei in het verhaal en daarom krijgt het een dikke 5 sterren.

Johan Andersson, früher ein erfolgreicher Skifahrer, inzwischen Inhaber eine Klempnerfirma, wird brutal erschlagen aufgefunden. Svag 3a! Gillade denna mer än den första. Inte lika uppenbart vem som var skyldig till vad här, och de parallella brotten vävdes ihop mycket bättre än i första boken. Stör mig dock på att det känns som att hälften av karaktärerna i både första o andra boken tar livet av sig när det blir för jobbigt i utredningen typ… känns som ett enkelt sätt att ba få bort dem ur storyn… den kärleksrelation som börjar växa fram mellan Hanna o Daniel tycker jag också är så in i helvette onödig asså så tråkigt det behövs inte nåt triangeldrama också när boken redan är 500 sidor… men asså ändå lite mysig o trevlig att läsa, o nu kan jag iaf sträckkolla serien på påsklovet tjohej🐣😇

Betyg: 4 av 5 - Dalskuggan är den andra boken i Viveca Stens nya serie Åremorden, som utspelar sig i Åre, till skillnad från hennes tidigare bokserie som utspelar sig i Sandhamn. Den första boken i den här nya serien heter Offermakaren. Jag tyckte om den boken, precis som jag har gjort med alla böckerna i Sandhamns-serien, och jag tyckte även om den här boken. Kommer absolut följa serien i framtiden. Lättläst, spännande, fina miljöer, bra karaktärer, och inte helt förutsägbar. Kan rekommenderas.

Terwijl rechercheurs Hanna Ahlander en Daniel Lindskog zich een weg proberen te banen door de groeiende lijst van verdachten, ontdekken ze dat de moord op Andersson slechts het begin is van een verontrustende, nog grotere zaak…
Op 7 januari verscheen het vervolg op de Scandi thriller "Verborgen in de sneeuw" van de Zweedse schrijfster Viveca Sten. Tegen de achtergrond van de mooie bergen neemt ze ons opnieuw mee naar Åre, waar menig inwoner graag op de latten staat.
Hana wist haar talent en ervaring in te zetten in een vorige zaak maar sneller dan verwacht wordt er opnieuw een lichaam aangetroffen. Ditmaal van een bekende skiër uit de regio die nu een loodgietersbedrijf runt met zijn partner. Een man die er om bekend stond goedlachs en optimistisch in het leven te staan heeft geen vijanden... of toch wel?
Terwijl Viveca Sten in deel 1 ruim de tijd nam om alle personages te introduceren, waardoor ze de vaart wat uit het verhaal haalde trekt ze hier meteen de spanningsboog aan. De actie laat niet lang op zich wachten en beide verhaallijnen vechten om je aandacht.
Hanna & Daniel voelen iedereen aan de tand maar je komt er al snel achter dat de leden van de hechte gemeenschap "Licht des Levens" alles in het werk stellen om hun vrome reputatie te beschermen. Ze dulden geen pottenkijkers en mijden alle contact met de "anderen". Naar mijn inziens de sterkte van het hele boek!
Dit boek was genieten, van de besneeuwde bergtoppen tot onmogelijke liefde die meerdere ijskoude harten verwarmde. De schrijfster liet haar personages groeien maar zette zelf ook grote stappen. Dit 352 bladzijden tellende boek leest heel vlot en bevat zo'n intrigerende setting dat je even naar adem moet happen.

Detectives Hannah and Daniel are investigating the murder of Johan in this mystery thriller! Their investigation leads them to a woman named Rebecka who hasn’t been seen or heard from in 5 days. Rebecka has endured violent abuse from her husband, Ole, but when she tries to reach out for help she’s met with “oh he’s a pastor he could never”.
The two stories of the man found dead in the snow and missing Rebecka come together in the end for a twist I did NOT see coming!
There were quite a bit of characters, which got a bit confusing for me at times, but they all played an important role and made this story all the better!

Verborgen in de schaduw van Viveca Sten is weer een super goed opgezet boek. Dit keer had ik de moordenaar totaal niet zien aankomen! Qua spanning vond ik het iets minder dan het eerste deel, maar dat kan ook komen doordat ik een grote Karin Slaughter-fan ben—na de Will Trent-serie valt alles een beetje tegen, wat niet helemaal eerlijk is. Het einde was echt geweldig, en ik ben heel benieuwd of er een derde deel komt!

Enligt min mening var den här boken aningen för lång… flera delar var förutsägbara och jag har lite svårt för att det hux flux börjar formas ett forcerat triangeldrama. I övrigt tycker jag om miljöerna och hur boken är skriven. Uppläsaren gör ett väldigt bra jobb. Nu blir det en paus innan vi kör vidare med Åremorden.

Dit deel vond ik beter dan het eerste. Er wordt regelmatig veel uitgelegd, wat ik niet zo nodig vond. Vooral de gedeeltes over Rebecka waren prettig om te lezen. Niet alles was even verrassend, maar concluderend kan ik zeggen dat ik het een leuk boek vond.

I appreciate this book’s attempt at adding some depth to human relationships in a murder mystery. Unfortunately, characters fall flat and come across as stereotypes rather than real people, i.e., the abused wife, the evil husband, etc. It’s almost as if the author is too afraid any of their main characters might come across as unlikable. Overall the book is meh- inoffensive and mildly entertaining.
