What do you do when skeletons in the family closet come out to play?
Imogene Lynch, assistant to the head embalmer of Greener Pastures Mortuary, has always longed for family, but her newfound cousin, Chelsea, is a big disappointment. Not only are they complete opposites, but Chelsea needs help with the kind of problem Imogene does her best to avoid—murder. And this one seems impossible to solve since Chelsea doesn’t know who the victim is.
Cursing her big heart and well-developed sense of guilt, Imogene plunges into a mystery more twisted than she could have imagined. Cryptic clues, as invisible as the ghosts who leave them, entangle the cousins, and dark family secrets begin to unravel. Imogene discovers she and Chelsea may have more in common than she’d thought. And that’s not a good thing.
The Lynches have baggage of a supernatural kind. Can Chelsea and Imogene work as a team, solve the crime, and lay the spirits of the past to rest, or will their mismatched psychic abilities lead them into danger?
If you can imagine Agatha Raisin as a twenty-something, rockabilly, ex-hairstylist with a weird connection to the dead, this book is for you.
Greta Boris is the USA Today Bestselling author of The Mortician Murders, a paranormal suspense series, and The Almost True Crime Series, a psychological suspense series.
She’s also co-founder of The Author Wheel - https://www.authorwheel.com - publishers of books, courses, and a podcast dedicated to helping authors overcome their roadblocks and keep their stories rolling.
Greta Boris has created a charming world in this set of paranormal mytery thrillers. The characters are smartly written and fun to read. In A Permanent Solution, Imogene has discovered a cousin she did not know existed. Chelsea is another fun player and should she pop up again (no reason why not?) I am sure the two will get into even more trouble and I am there for it. Such a delightful series. Smartly written with mysteries that take you on a ride and are not that easy to figure out. Very enjoyable reading. I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest and unbiased opinion of the tale.
A PERMANENT SOLUTION is an excellent mystery with wonderful characters. This is quite an original and entertaining series. I do miss the light hearted humor of the first couple of books, however, and I preferred Imogene’s “feelings” to full-on hauntings. Still a great story! I reviewed an Advance Reader copy of this book.
I DNFedvthis book. I just couldn't stand the misleading anymore. Although its written good. Question 1; Where exactly is the paranormal? Answer; Hardly anywhere. The books can go 1-10 chapters without any paranormal activity, then next chapter its there. I feel like Greta is just throwing in paranormal scenes. Now these spirits are supposedly with her 24/7, but they're not. Question 2; Where is the Mortician? Answer; Nowhere. This is the Mortician Murder Mystery, but without the Mortician. Imogene in book 2 said she was going to school to be an assistant embalmer and Mortician, but in book 3 if I recall El brought that up and Imo gene said she isn't becoming a Mortician. So, the series title is misleading, just like the paranormal. Question 3; Chelsea has dreams of humans from dogs? What? Now, dogs can dream like humans, but how can she have the owners dreams? That is impossible. Its a good idea, but not well thought out. Question 4; The family only have these powers because of their professions? What? I've seen paranormal investigators whistle and get a response from spirits. It sounds like a good idea, but poorly executed. Question 5; Is El and Imo gene's relationship fake? Answer; I think so. Every time Imogene has to say in some way "I've never been into a guy like El." Then why date him? I just feel this relationship is forced. There is no love or chemistry between them and I feel like El is just using Imogene. I don't recommend this book and don't expect a lot of paranormal nor a Mortician.
A lot going on in this book. At least 3 separate plotlines are happening, but not all involve murder. I feel so bad for Imogene for how El's mother is treating her. He is too passive in dealing with the problem. I have been disappointed in him also because he does not share certain information on the cases with her claiming police confidentiality, but he is not yet a policeman and right now it is their case, not his and Dulac's. Hmmm, this happened in the last book but it is still on my mind. Anyways, Imogene was leaving El out when working with her cousin on the current case, so that is not cool either. But when she finally told him what was going on, together they got positive traction, even though Imogene is ultimately the one to solve the cases. I am rambling but this shows my deep interest in the plots, and why I am still reading this great series.
A Permanent Solution: A Paranormal Mortician Murder Mystery (The Mortician Murders Book 4) , my thirteenth read from author Greta Boris. An enjoyable, well-written ghost mystery. “I received a courtesy Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author with Buzz Cut: A Mortician Murder (The Mortician Murders Book 5) high on my TBR list. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018.
Another great book by Greta Boris! If you start at the beginning of the series with book one you will have a fun time reading these, but each book can be read as a stand alone. -Imogene seems to find trouble without even looking for it. This time she meets a cousin she never knew she had and discovers that her psychic gift runs in the family. Who knew that being a mortician's assistant would have so many twists and turns. I can't wait for book #5 to continue the adventure!
I am really enjoying this whole series and can’t wait to read the next one. I am a big fan of mystery, paranormal and romance and this has all the right elements. I really love that it is a unique story line with the whole mortician aspect and a very rare psychic gift of feeling ghosts emotions through their hair. The characters are different but lovable and feel like friends.
I hope you've been paying attention. This maybe s series of cozy mysteries, but there is nothing minor in how Boris writes a plot. If you haven't read the first three and a half books yet, lay down Permanent Solution and pick up Dye Job. Great Plot, Great Characters, great dialogue. Great Reads.
After almost bring buried alive a few times, Imogene does it again! Now there's more trouble. And she gets to do it again, even though she feels cursed! Another hit book to read!
Great story, wonderful characters, impossible to put down!! Absolutely love these books!! Start at the beginning & before you know you’ll have read four books too! Off to read some more!!
This book had the potential to be the best in the series. Unfortunately Els mother was more interesting than the murderer. Wish we could have spent more time in San Luis Obispo.
The characters develop themself slowly, getting a little bit more substance as the story progress in that series, and the intrigues are quite different from each other.
Some people would love to have more family surrounding them, other people can’t stand the family they have and would do anything to get away from them, and then there are people in families that try to micromanage their lives and their loves. Family can be a joy, a curse, or a nuisance – and they all have a place in this engaging and highly entertaining story. Imogene Lynch loves her grandmother dearly but she has always wished that she had some more family. She is surprised and delighted to find that she has a cousin that has recently moved into town. She is a bit disappointed, however, to find that she and her cousin are quite different in all aspects but one. Evidently, they share a family trait that tends to get them mixed up in some dangerous situations and her cousin wants Imogene to help her out of just such a problem. Despite local law enforcement declaring two recent deaths to be accidental (and unrelated), the cousins believe there is much more to the story. Imogene would definitely prefer not to get involved, but her cousin is adamant that they investigate because she is being haunted by dreams involving one of the victims. They embark on a convoluted trail that seems to lead to one dead end after another but, as bad luck would have it, their persistence lands them squarely in the path of real danger. They’ve barely just met and now they must put their lives in each other’s hands. If, like me, you love twisty tales, spunky heroines, paranormal intrigue, and lovable dogs, this is a perfect story for you. I enjoyed every single page and look forward to another story in this delightful and original series. I was provided with an advance copy of this book, for which I thank the author, but I am sharing my honest and unbiased review on a completely voluntary basis.
Ghostwriter or Ghost Writer? Imogene learns a new mystery-solving skill – Excel spreadsheets. Who’d a thought? But it makes total sense when she and her newfound cousin put their heads together to work on two separate murders cases. They may be opposites in many ways, but those are the types that challenge us and get us to think about things differently that what he had beforehand. I hope Chelsea stays…
Alphonso's back with his mismatched vocabulary. And when a new character meets him, his comments are even funnier than before. Especially, when that intruder, er, I mean newcomer is the high school ex- of Imogene’s boyfriend!
Yet another thing that keeps me coming back to this series – it’s always a walk down memory for me (I was born and bred in The OC): My dad’s favorite beach was (and still is) Dana Point. I spent a lot of time during my high school and college years in Laguna Beach. Our neighbors owned an avocado ranch (similar to one of the characters) and we’d buy their honey every year. I’d occasionally drive down to SLO for lunch at this A.Maz.Ing. Mexican restaurant (my mouth is watering as I type).
On a more serious note, the author incorporated some deeper topics: Read, read, read. Emotional Dysfunction was portrayed quite well. Family is important and maintaining those relationships is even more so. Dream deprivation prevents us from working out our ‘own issues’ while sleeping.
Fave quote: ‘People who rescue dogs are a special breed themselves.’
If only solving murders was as simple as ‘The butler did it in the parlor with a candlestick’.
Time to start the author’s ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’ series with the prequel ‘The Origin of Sin’ then ‘The Escape Room’.
I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
In this story, Im learns that she has a cousin and meets her at Grans' home. The cousin, Chelsea, has moved from Mass. and is working at a shelter as a vet. Chelsea asks Im to help her with a mystery. It seems like Chelsea has the same sort of sight for reading as Im, but hers is through dogs. A dog was brought to the shelter and Chelsea got a reading of what might a potential murder. She wants Im to look into who this person might be. Im while working learns that they have received a body of someone that was believed to have committed suicide and may be the person that Chelsea is searching. After Im began looking into it, she discovered this was not Chelsea's. but a brand-new body who was thought to have died by suicide as well.
While this was going on, El Im's boyfriend, wanted Im to go to his parent's house for the weekend. Im was not wanting to go, but she went anyway. While at his parent's house an old girlfriend of El showed up as well as during the night, Im discovered something about El's mother.
Im and Chelsea continued their search and Im requested El's help. On a weekend when El went back to his parent's house, Em discovered who the killer was that they were looking for. Im tried reach Chelsea but was having no luck. Im tried a couple locations but had no luck. She then had one more place to check.
To discover who the killer of the two dead bodies, where Im eventually found Chelsea and what events took place after that discovery, then you need to read this book.
Imogene Lynch’s life is anything but ordinary. Her ability to feel the final emotions of the dead has been managed by certain precautions she’s been taking, which helps keep her life more on the “normal” side of things. She also has El - her new boyfriend, who is a source of strength and encouragement to her. Other than him, her family has consisted of just her Gram since her parents died in a car crash. So far she’s managed fine.
El wants Imogene to come with him on a weekend trip to meet his parents. That’s not stressful at all, right?
Imogene also discovers she has a cousin, Chelsea. Since she’s a blood relative, she also has a special ability. But she wants — needs — Imogene’s help. First of all, she needs to figure out who died. It’s a lot easier when the deceased is in your mortuary. At least they’re already identified!
Of course, just knowing who died isn’t the same as figuring out the where, why, how, and when. And the living seem to be a much bigger threat than any ghost could ever be.
What has Chelsea gotten Imogene into? Something so dangerous that both of their lives are at stake. Hang on because there are more twists and turns in this mystery than you can imagine, but you’ll be drawn in by the characters and storyline so thoroughly that you won’t be able to put this book down until you’ve read every last word!
I received an advance copy of the book and am voluntarily leaving this review.
Imogene Lynch has a long-lost cousin. Who wants to meet her. Because she needs a favour. A big favour.
It takes but a moment to slip into Im's life. Honestly, the first sentence is the mode of transport to a version of the world twisted a mere eighth to the right. This latest instalment of the Mortician Murders series builds upon the previous books, granting us passage to something both mysteriously mystical and yet also very relatable.
I feel guilty, sometimes, for spectating Im's life so closely. I know Imogene better than I know my friends. Often snarky during her internal monologues, Im is nonetheless an empathetic character. The author has written a moving persona with abundant charm and individuality. So too are the other players in the tale who trap the imagination and draw you further into the book.
A Permanent Solution is my favourite book in the series. Yes, I think this about every book in the series every time. Yes, it is true - every time.
This series transcends ages. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves a good cosy - where the good is stretched out so long that you'd need many "O"s to accomplish how excellent the books are—highly recommended.
Thank you as always to Greta Boris for the chance to read this e-ARC. My opinions are my own, honest and true.
Once again my favourite hairdresser/ beautician/ psychic sleuth emerges from the 'cosmic bus stop' in her 'Death Valley' to solve another murder mystery or two all while trying to achieve her goal of trying to assist with 100 remains. In a development on her previous escapades she finds a wider family to work with in solving a series of murders involving authors and doctors. As a dog lover I liked the description of her as a saluki though this compliment doesn't help her overcome her emotional insecurity when a 'rival' appears on the scene to distract her from solving the case.
I always have a smile at Alphonso crucifying the English language not to mention the wonderful descriptions the author has on the heroine's body when the spirits 'join the crowd playing water polo inside a sea of gravestones'
A further development is that she reveals her talents to a wider audience which will no doubt lead to her being involved in a greater degree with the authorities. The final 'visit' from an unwelcome spirt heralds even more intriguing developments in future books.
I've only given you a taste of her adventures but hopefully it will encourage you to spend your pennies wisely and enjoy the novel. As per usual I was lucky to get an ARC copy but the views expressed are my own
Hair-raising clues reveal a double murder - 4 stars
Written almost like a diary, Imogene the Morticians' assistant, tells her thoughts about the dead, her boyfriend (El), and relatives throughout this unusual mystery. Imogene has a gift - sometimes a curse - when the spirits of the recently deceased but not yet interred make her life difficult.
Chelsea, Imogene's cousin from the East Cost has come to California to bond. Neither Chelsea nor Imogene has seen the other. Then become wary friends sharing a family trait of picking up a connection to the recently dead. In the mortician business, there is always a new body; some of those bodies have stories that they want to have investigated about their unnatural death.
Having a connection to the local police through her boyfriend, El, Imogene has developed a reputation of finding suspicious deaths which otherwise seem almost natural. This adventure included several dogs as well as Imogene's cat, Fred. As most pet lovers will testify, many pets know their owner and will try to intervene on the owner's behalf. In this story, more than a pet intervention is needed before the police arrive.
Enjoy the puns and watch out for the green monster of jealousy. This was a fun story that should appeal to Agatha Christie fans.
In this adventure, Imogene (Genie) Lynch, meets an unknown cousin, Chelsea, for the first time. Chelsea, a veterinarian, also has a family hitch in her DNA, which allows her to experience feelings from deceased people who were murdered. Her psychic contacts arise through touching the hair of their pet dogs. Chelsea had moved to be closer to Genie, hoping to team up with her to solve the mysterious deaths. With the help of Genie’s boyfriend, El, who is in training to be a policeman, the ladies got into dangerous, scary situations that kept me guessing whether they could possibly avoid harm, much less solve the mysteries. Ms. Boris has built strong characters and used vivid descriptions to make me feel like I’m directly involved in the clever twists and turns in her believable story lines. She has created an eerie family gift (curse?) that leads to strange situations, and even includes some comic moments to keep me engrossed, not wanting to put the book down, even at bedtime. I highly recommend this series, but suggest that you start with book one, to follow the characters through their learning curves in handling their gifts. I received an ARC – this review is my honest opinion.
Even though Imogene has been raised by her loving grandmother since her parents were killed in a car crash, she wished she had more family around her. Well what a surprise when she finds she has a cousin, Chelsea with a special gift like Imogene's. However, their personalities were totally opposite each other. Chelsea is working as a vet in town and when she touches dog hair, she dreams the owner has been murdered. Imogene, who does not want to be involved in solving a murder does not want to be involved with her cousin's desire to solve it. But reluctantly, Imogene touches the bodies of the dead on her mortuary table to help her cousin even though the police wrote the deaths off as accidents. What has Chelsea gotten Imogene into? With so many twists and turns and dead ends and danger that could cost the girl's their lives, they investigate. This is a fast paced, page turning book 4 in the series which makes you read this straight through! I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to see what will happen in the next book! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
This is another great book in the series It's a fun mystery and you won't solve it till the end. The story starts with Imogene finding out she has a relative. Then she learns while heading to grans with El that El's mother is not doing well and She and El are supposed to spend the weekend at his mother's. That is the start of the story. The cousin is a Vet who had moved to the area. At the meal Im feels that the cousin looks down on her for being a mortician's assistant. They end up getting together and IM finds out that the cousin is haunted when she touches the hair of animals. She is being haunted by a ghost of a dead woman but doesn't know who. She knows the body is at the Morturary that IM works at and that convinces IM to touch one of the women's hair. The woman puts IM in a bad mood so she feels the woman might have been murdered. But that feeling goes away when she visits EL's mom. El's mom as the previous time they met doesn't seem to like IM.
This book is very exciting and it's hard to put down. You will enjoy the read.
A Permanent Solution is a great addition to the Mortician Murder series. Imogene Lynch who works as an assistant to the head embalmer has always wanted more family around her. It is a great joy to her when a cousin pops into her life, even if she does seem distant. Chelsea is a veterinarian and has a secret, one that resembles her dear cousin’s. When she touches hair, in her case, dog hair, Chelsea dreams about the owner’s murder. Though Imogene is reticent to touch the hair of the bodies on her table because the murdered spirits haunt her, she does so, wanting to help her cousin. The police may have written these deaths off as accidents, but Imogene and Chelsea know better. Greta Boris brings us another exciting read with a very tense ending. The whole series is quite fun to read, and I look forward to the next book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I like a good mystery which includes a good brain teaser to figuring out whodunnit, keeps me engaged in the storyline and importantly does not leave me terrified (albeit I do get a teensy squeamish at times when there are descriptions of performing after death body preparation.) This authors Mortician Murders series fits the ticket and gets better and better with each consecutive book. I find myself really invested in the repeat characters and what happens to them as they have become more developed with each book. It is enjoyable reading about Imogene, the main character, and her developing psychic abilities with regards to the dearly departed as well as her realistic struggle (as evidenced in her internal dialogue) coming to terms with her gift. A new and interesting character is introduced - Imogene’s cousin who dreams about the dead - how creative is that! So many exciting possibilities for future adventures with Imogene, El (her boyfriend) and the new cousin.
A Permanent Solution: A Mortician Murder is book #4 in The Mortician Murders series by Greta Boris.
Imogene Lynch wants to lead a “normal” life. She has a job she likes and a boyfriend, El. She takes precautions to not trigger her gift/curse. Her family is expanding to include a cousin she didn’t know about, but Chelsea isn’t what she was expecting.
I really enjoy this series. The reactions that Imogene gets when she tells people what she does are interesting. I feel bad she doesn’t get the respect she should since it isn’t an easy job. Imogene and El are a sweet couple and I found the mystery very intriguing especially since Chelsea is involved. I look forward to the next book!
Thank you to the author for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I absolutely adore the Mortician series, the characters just keep growing and the stories get more intriguing with every book. When Imogene discovers that not only has she a long lost family but that they also have some unusual gifts aswell. When her cousin moves into town with her unique skill they team up together to solve not one but two hauntings. When an old flame of El's comes into the picture Imogene starts to have doubts about their relationship especially as El's mother disapproves of her choice of work but when Imogene's ghost starts to play havoc with her emotions can she trust her own feelings?
There is certainly never a dull moment in the book and series and I devoured every page.
Imogene has always wanted more family, and she gets her wish in this book when her cousin Chelsea moves from Boston. It seems there is something a little weird with the whole family. Chelsea has abilities similar to Imogene's but different. With El off helping his mother Chelsea joins Imogene in crime solving. I love this series by Ms Boris. The writing is snappy and at times quite funny, the characters are wonderful, the plots are well woven, and the mysteries are believable. Who ever thought being a mortician could be so funny? With a new partner in crime, I look forward to seeing what trouble Imogene gets into next. Thanks to the author for giving me an early copy of this book. I loved it!
