Really enjoyed this chapter in Kate's life. While the mystery plays on, Kate's personal life moves to the front of the line. When her ex boyfriend the FBI agent and sometimes work partner, Jake, comes back to town indefinitely for work, just as her relationship with Gem, the wealthy man whose always been there in the background, helping whenever she needs it, things get a little awkward. She hopes she can work on her cases while Jake works on his, but that is all wishful thinking when it becomes clear that their two cases could very well be connected. Kate's character is tough as nails, but you see some vulnerability when it comes to the two men in her life. I really enjoy Kate as a Protagonist for the fact that she seems real, compared to some I've read. She isn't naïve or gullible. Although she is an actual detective and not an amateur sleuth. Even in her interactions with her friends and loved ones, her actions are what you'd expect from her and what you'd probably do yourself. No sugar coating anything. Her emotions are real. The mystery itself is interesting and somewhat dark in nature (dealing with human/sex trafficking.) It doesn't go into detail, just mentions of it happening. There is no sexual content, just some heavy kissing. The story is easy to read and reads quickly. It is written strictly from Kate's POV. It is part of a series. It can be read as a stand alone as far as the mystery is concerned, but the characters relationships carry over throughout the series, so you may find yourself wanting to go back to find out what you missed. :D In the same regards, the case is closed by the end of the book, but Kate's romantic relationship is still ongoing. This isn't the end for her. She's still waiting for her HEA.
