This is absolutely the most impactful Bible study I've ever been a part of, and everyone I've talked to about it has said the same thing.

This study takes the focus off us; our pain, our constant struggle to be known & seen, our continual striving to perform...and helps us focus on the One who takes our pain, who always knows and see us, and who calls us to more than performance.

The study questions were so introspective. They brought out so much in me that I didn't know was there. So much that was "hidden" in me.

I can't recommend it highly enough. Find a group of women and dig in!!!

My Sunday School class did this study with the video. The videos were around 20 minutes long so that left time for discussion before and after the video. The study talks about some of the most hidden, least remembered people in the Bible including the Sons of Korah, Cleopas, Huldah, the Daughters of Shallum, Pilate's Wife, and Gideon. Ms. Allison talks about how we live in a world that tells you that visibility is value, that recognition is your greatest reward. So many of us are enslaved to this culture of performance and people-pleasing, earthly accolades and social media likes. She talks about power, purposes and delight be of hiddenness in Christ. There were many aspects of the video we liked, and we all learned something, but this was not one of our favorite studies. According to Goodreads she has a few other studies, but I’m not sure we will look into them for our class.

What an amazing study! Almost everyone has times in their lives that they feel like they are unseen, hidden from the rest of the world. But what if God uses us the most when we are in a season of being hidden? Allison Allen chooses people that when reading through the Bible seem to be just some obscure person along the way. There are times these people are not even listed by name but instead of as the daughters of, the wife of, the woman who was, the grandson of, etc. But no matter if they are named or not--as many people in the Bible are named if even for a small role they play--these people who are, for the most part, faithful to God or at the very least, if they do not believe in God, they recognize His power, that He is special, unique, all knowing and that there is power in the belief of Him (or in the fear of Him). These are characters that risked their place in society, risked their lives, risked the lives of their families, and yet they still obeyed the words of God or they did what God asked him to do.

Many of the Bible's most famous characters also hadperiods of being Hidden. When you look at the lives of Joseph, of Moses, of Jesus Christ--they all had times where they spent part of their lives hidden from the rest of the world. And most of these times were not just for a week or two, no they were for numerous years. Joseph stayed hidden 11-13 years after he was sold into slavery. Moses spent 40 years wandering the desert--and how many years was he essentially hidden before that? He was hidden as an infant, found floating in the water in a basket only to be then hidden away in the palace. Jesus was hidden for 30 years before he started teaching and preaching. From Christ's birth to his teaching, the only time you hear about Jesus and how he was special was when they returned for the census to be taken and he was lost, and then found at the temple. But it wasn't until he was at a wedding and began performing miracles that he was heard of again. Yet, even with His first miracles, He always told them, but keep this quiet, don't tell others how this happened or who did this.

And we discover that those God chooses, whether they are Hidden in Christ of God to do His will or to be His voice--most all of them felt that they were the "least of them," those who were not considered to be important, those that were expected to stay away from people, those that were worthy of such tasks that they were being asked to do. And each of them learned that they were never alone, God saw each of them and never left them. The same can be said for each of us, no matter how hidden we seem to be, we are Never Alone. Jesus sees each of us and will never leave you. He is the one that will strengthen you to become the person He sees you and needs you to be. He will be your strength and shield, He will be your voice, He will be the one that provides you the right words to say.

Allison Allen brings in not only these seemingly obscure people from the Bible, but shows us how we as ordinary people all share the same fears and anxieties when God asks us to obey, to speak, to build, whatever the task may be. The stories from the Bible intersect so beautifully with the lives and stories of people who have been hidden but did such wonderful things during their lives. Things that may never have been accomplished if they had not been hidden!

I highly suggest, especially if you feel like you're hidden, that you're invisible or unseen by those around you to delve into this study with Allison Allen. Reading the book she wrote, Seen Secure and Free, to accompany this study can only help in you journey through the study--but is not required to be read along with it.
