Falling in love wasn't supposed to be part of their game of cat and mouse.
Reformed con artist Nicole Taylor is confronted with her past in this sequel to Falling For the Mark. Nicole’s former mark is out for revenge against her and her daughter Maya. He will stop at nothing to bring them to justice, including hiring private investigator Spencer Shaw.
Spencer is struggling to balance keeping his business afloat while also becoming the guardian of his niece. When the opportunity of a lifetime arises to work with a client willing to pay any price to get a job done, Spencer jumps at the chance to save his business and secure his future as a single father. All he has to do is go undercover and collect proof of a con artist’s crimes. Sounds simple enough.
But as Spencer delves into Nicole’s past and gets closer to her, he begins to realize the con woman isn’t who he thought she was. Despite his strong moral compass, Spencer finds himself drawn to the mysterious woman. Caught between his loyalty to his job and his growing feelings for Nicole, Spencer must decide whether to follow his heart or his head.
Between wanting to escape her criminal past and vowing to protect her daughter from the danger that threatens them, Nicole isn’t expecting to fall in love. But fate has different plans in store for her. Will Nicole and Spencer find love in their game of cat and mouse, or will their respective pasts destroy their chance at a future together?
No matter the genre or time, Dominique Davis writes affectionately about unapologetic out-of-the-box women and the people who love them. From a mother-daughter con artist duo to a revenge-driven college student, there’s always something special about her characters, as she believes that all great stories should feature remarkable yet flawed female leads. Writing has been her passion since she could hold a pencil, and nowadays she divides her time between devouring books, fine-tuning manuscripts, and embracing her love for all things pop culture. You can learn more about her by checking out her website and following her on social media.
At the very beginning of the book the author gives a warning for sensitive subject matters within the story or to scan a QR code or visit her website…Genius!
I was bated in the first chapter. A devious harlot, in which a mother and her daughter orchestrate elaborate cons with wealthy men to violate their infidelity clause in their prenup in order to walk away with a fortune.
This was a story within a story. You have a family drama that encompasses Spencer. A vengeance playing out with William, a recovering alcoholic, and a love interest with Maya.
Kennedy and Nicole’s plan to find something on William that he doesn’t want out there and use it to get him to go away for good was a plot twist. Then there was a HOT sex scene that redirected the story to an epic romance. The novel had elements of crime, mystery, family issues, love, alcoholism, and very subtle LGBTQ matters, revenge, and forgiveness.
A PI falling in love with his mark while investigating for his client seeking revenge was the ultimate plot twist of this story.
Catching the Con is the second book in a series, however this is a standalone sequel, where you don’t have to read the first book in the series to understand who all the characters are and their backgrounds to enjoy the read. The author explains it in this novel very well. I’m curious enough to read a third book in the series if and when it is published.
Dominique Davis does a fine job with developing the characters and connecting the plot twists while bringing on dialogue and drama together in the story. Very good writing! I gave this a solid 3.5 star rating.
This was a cute second chance romance book. The characters were complex and made you want to know them better. I liked that both Spencer and Nicole were flawed, and they both owned it. It made them believable. The storyline was original. I really enjoyed this book. Thank you to LibraryThing and the author for giving me a chance to read it.
