Living in a small town, where everyone knows everyone, is only good for some. If you are Bella, you are shunned from society for no good reason, people of the town choosing to dislike her for what seems like the sake of it. Her partner, Gabriel, is a serial cheat and isn't exactly who he portrays himself to be. When Bella realises this, she runs away, right through the forest to Knightwell Castle, a castle where the fabled Beast resides. Only, when Bella is face to face with The Beast, he isn't what she expected, or what she had been told in the many stories around town. Bella soon realises she doesn't want to return to her life, but can she stay here with The Beast? What will become of her if she does?
First, I would like to say, I have always adored the story of Beauty and The Beast, it was always one of my favourites among the princess stories I read or watched as a child. Of course, being a book reader I was always fascinated with the library from the movie, something that makes a wonderful and magnificent appearance in this book!
Harmony does a great job of doing the unexpected with this novel. For example, I was anticipating that Alex, The Beast, would be a werewolf or something of that kind, but I was mistaken and the route Harmony takes makes sense and works perfectly. (No spoilers!) As always there are twists and turns throughout the story, even from the very beginning, which kept me hooked, keeping me up until the early hours reading! The curse is also not what you would expect if you have watched the Disney film, it is far more complex and we learn why and who put the curse upon Alex.
I love the way these characters were brought to life. Alex is sweet, caring and protective, always keeping an eye and ear out for Bella and Louie, but also realistic in sense that he can and does make mistakes. Bella is very easy to relate with in many ways, she's sweet and rather innocent, always looking for the best in people and eager to protect and defend those who mean the most to her.
Gabriel is absolutely deplorable! But, that's the point! He's the worst, and I mean worst, excuse for a man ever! He really gets what is owed to him in the book! (Again, no spoilers!) He's very easy to dislike, even hate, from the beginning of the story.
Overall, this retelling is wonderful and I thoroughly loved it from beginning to end. The characters are well written and the plot well thought out, with enough background and lore to explain the world and events but not overflowing the book with it. And, I would like to add, Harmony's writing just keeps on improving with every book she writes!
I would just like to add, there are some dark themes and scenes in this story, so please take a moment to read the trigger warnings that the author has provided at the beginning before reading.
A very well deserved 5/5 stars!
