4.5⭐️ Otis and Evelyn have been the best of friends since college when she dated his brother Dean - until the night he left with no explanation. Now seven years later, the two have become inseparable. When an attack leaves Otis injured and Evelyn caring for him, their relationship begins to shift in ways neither saw coming.
I am in my messy romance era clearly, and this book has literally everything you could want in one. First and foremost, this book has phenomenal ASL rep. It also deals with overcoming trauma and the mental health toll it takes on those involved. The author does an incredible job tackling heavy topics in a very realistic and healthy way, while still allowing the romance to shine through.
There was so much about this book I loved. The small town vibe (set in and around Evelyn’s coffee shop) but in a big city (Chicago), the wonderful cast of characters including amazing supporting characters, the growth of each of our MCs as individuals and in their relationships, the romantic angst, and or course, our very swoony MC Otis, all made this a must read. I had intended to read this book over a few days, and instead, read it over just a few hours.

IN OUR HANDS is a masterfully written romance novel, and also so much more! Yes, the love story between Otis and Evelyn was a big highlight (and it's definitely perfect if you love tropes such as best friends to lovers, forced proximity and ex's brother), but friendship, family, forgiveness, healing...those were such huge parts of this as well. I found it to be a truthful and heartfelt representation of joys and sorrows of everyday life, and would highly recommend it to all lovers of romance in double PoV who want something diverse, inclusive (Otis, the MMC, is deaf), spicy, but definitely far from the same old story. This one leaves a mark!
I really loved how the narration was split in past and present chapters. Sometimes friends to lovers stories suffer from the lack of seeing how the bond formed, so getting to see how Otis and Evelyn met, became friends and some key moments of their history made everything in the present chapters much sweeter and also frustrating (in a good, tension-filled way) from a shipper perspective. But the past chapters also made the complicated relationship between Otis and his brother (and Evelyn's ex) Dean so much more bittersweet. The bromance was beautiful and you can bet that I was rooting for a reconciliation. And also that I fell in love with Dean (because of course I would fall for the bad boy).
The characterization was this book's biggest strength. These characters were incredibly relatable in both their virtues and their vices, and through their experiences the author shed light on important
topics such as sexual assault, anxiety, depression, trauma, healing, and the importance of inclusivity. These were prefectly balanced within the romance, creating a reading experience that was never too funny or too heavy, but just right.

Dear Ms. Moyer,
This book came at a perfect time for me. Maybe it's because it's the Christmas holidays, and there are certain themes in this book that hit that spot. Maybe it's because you've opened me up to reading once again. Maybe it's because I adore ASL and everything that surrounds that incredible culture and community. Maybe it's because you are one hell of a gifted writer.
“She looks like love.”
Whatever it may be, Evelyn and Otis' love story is what true love is. It's why I, and many others, read romance. Love stories like theirs is what you tag under 'favorites', 'tears of joy', 'tell everyone about it!'.

If you are in the mood for an emotional read that will make you feel it all, look no further! Told in a dual POV format with flashback scenes, this story follows Evelyn and Otis, two best friends who ultimately come to terms with how they feel after tragedy hits.
I adored both Otis and Evelyn and their special relationship. They were multi-layered and real characters who learned to lean on each other to get through past traumas and life’s hardships. I love how Moyer emphasized the importance of finding someone to complete you and who you feel safe around no matter what. The deaf representation was also really strong, and I found it easy to step into Otis’s shoes and experience the world as he did.

I loved the ASL rep, aka American Sign Language if you aren’t familiar (I learned basic signs in grade school so this brought back happy memories!) Everyone should look into learning it!! 🤟🏼

Best friends for years one night of shared trauma begins to open their eyes and shift their relationship making them both realize that the right person for them was there the whole time Otis and Evelyn are the friends to lovers that could easily be a real life story their shift was gradual and sweet with bouts of drama because Otis brother is Evelyn’s ex boyfriend who cruelly abandoned her after she experienced a horrible trauma that he was unable to handle the fall out from Otis though when he learns about it is her rock helping her work through the lingering triggers

I want to love this story so badly but I just don’t. The book itself is having an identity crisis. Is it a sweet romance? Is it miscommunication to the max? Is it mysterious flashbacks and overcoming obstacles? It tries to be all three, plus more, which results in a bloated story that somehow manages to meander while also giving you whiplash. Everyone in this book needs to go to therapy, stat. I couldn’t enjoy the love story when it was muddied by too much unnecessary drama.

A book with a deaf/HoH rep always speaks to me! I use basic Dutch sign language with my disabled sister and have studied to be a Dutch sign language teacher! I love how dialogue in this book included sign language.
This is an amazingly well written debut novel. Larissa’s writing captured me from the first lines. So much is happening, I went from crying to laughing to slapping my book I’m my face from shock. Otis has a very special place in my heart!

"In Our Hands" by Larissa C. Moyer is an emotional rolleecoaster filled with earth shattering love and characters that feel so real you'll wish you could hug them in real life. She navigates love and trauma and anxiety in such a brilliant, well written way. Otis and Evelyn's story feels tangible, the tension and the love they have for each other leaps of the page. But not only is romantic and emotional but also healing and witty. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves:

Such a great story! Loved Otis and Evelyn’s characters. Your heart ached for the two of them after their tragic event they experienced together. Their relationship was fun to watch evolve and loved their humor.

I'm calling it now. This is one of my top reads for the year. I'm going to struggle to put my thoughts into words but I will try my best.
I am absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of love that is in this book. And it's all different types of love. There's so many beautiful friendship, family and chosen family relationships in this story. And like all relationships, they aren't always smooth sailing. I really appreciated the way conflict was solved in this book - it felt right.
I loved reading a story with ASL in it! I found it so interesting - especially in Otis' POV chapters. Kind of makes me want to learn some AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language)! I also loved how the emotional parts of this book snuck up on me - after reading the first few chapters where I was laughing out loud I wouldn't have thought it would be so heartwrenching. I loved it!
I cried at such random points in this book (I blame Mary, she's so beautiful) and I absolutely loved the way this story ended. The writing from Larissa is incredible - this book is going to stay with me for a long time. I need a physical copy asap.
Please pick this one up for a beautiful, heart warming and stunning story.

Omw, this book. I don't have words. I am still a bit shell shock while writing the review but in a good way. There is so much that happens good and bad. This book deals with PTSD, Anxiety, trauma and so much more. The ASL representation was one of my favorite parts and one of the biggest parts of the book🤟.
I laughed, I cried and fell in love with Otis and Evelyn. The way they found their way to each other and the amount of growth they both went through together but also separate was *chef’s kiss*
This book is already released but the next book and companion novel finding more follows Dean & Amelia's story, will be released on Dec 5 2023. I can't wait to read it!

Okay WHOA.
I feel like I haven’t read a book like this one in quite a while. This story fully illustrates the idea of finding the person that completes you, your safe place to land. This is a story of love, hope, grief, and growth and it’s honestly implanted itself in my heart.
I can’t get over how WELL this story is written-I LOVE this author’s voice! These characters are so real and authentic and they experience REAL trauma that I think makes them that much more tangible, especially to those of us that have experienced the same or similar traumas. Evelyn and Otis are such intense and vivid characters that I feel like I actually know them. I cried with and for them, cheered for them, and just completely DEVOURED their story to find out where their lives were headed!
The representation in this book was both unique and really well done. We’re given first hand experiences of deaf characters and assault victims, and they’re presented in ways I’m not sure I’ve ever read before! I commend the author on writing a sexual assault victim and in doing so in such a real way. So much of Evelyn’s struggle (the PTSD, the grief) echoes my own-I’ve never felt so SEEN in my own trauma, it’s the representation I never knew I needed!
On top of everything else, this books just gives SUCH a beautiful, multi-layered, heart warming and heart WRENCHING story. There’s so much going on as these two beautiful MCs find their way to one another and struggle through their own traumas, and it was honestly quite refreshing to see them navigate both the good AND the bad TOGETHER.

This book was absolutely beautiful and had everything you could want in a contemporary romance novel. It was easily one of my favorite romances I’ve read this year. It follows Otis and Evelyn, who have been best friends since college, when she dated his older brother, Dean, before the day he left her with no explanation at all. Now, seven years later, Otis and Evelyn are closer than ever and they have to rely on each other even more when they are faced with trauma and tragedy they never saw coming.
I loved both Evelyn and Otis SO much – their characters were complex and human, flawed and beautiful. The ASL rep was beautifully done and I was blown away with how it was portrayed. The author captured mental health and overcoming trauma in the most realistic and healthy way, while still allowing the the romance shine. This is not an easy thing to do and I appreciated how real and human this book felt. The spice was so great, but not over the top and complimented the story perfectly.
My only critique and reason for not giving it 5 stars was this book felt just a little too long- I struggle when romance books hit that 350+ mark, and this one comes in at 448 pages. But even with that, there was nothing in the story itself I didn’t like. The story was incredible, all of the characters, the setting, made this an incredible read. I highly recommend for fans of contemporary romance (especially fans of Colleen Hoover and Mia Sheridan!) and if you are a fan of any of the following:

Otis and Evelyn have been the best of friends since their college days. She was dating, Dean, Otis’ brother, but then Dean suddenly leaves. Now seven years later, Otis and Evie are inseparable. After a traumatic event happens to both of them, their relationship finds itself in a new territory.
Oh my goodness! What a heartfelt story. This is such an excellent friends to lovers romance, but with such an emotional punch. The trauma, the PTSD, the anxiety, all the emotional baggage Otis and Evie carried around. My heart broke for each of them over and over.
These characters are so special, but especially Otis🥹 what a perfect MMC🫠 he is swoony, thoughtful, funny, and so compassionate. I also really loved Evie, too. The way she cared and took the time to learn ASL not only for Otis, but herself…just made my heart so happy.
I also loved all the growth we got to see from all the characters. Evie and Otis were able to help each other slowly heal from their messy and difficult pasts. I’m so happy we are getting s Dean story. He is so lost in this book, but you can definitely tell he is trying and has redeeming qualities. The parts of the story that had to do with Otis and Dean’s relationship tugged on all my heartstrings.

I wanted to sob out like 10 different emotions when I finished this book. It is so raw and beautifully written with dual POV. The witty banter and the REALISTIC friendships, relationships, and overall group dynamic is something I have not encountered at this kind of level tbh.
Evelyn is a coffee expert that dated a dude who wasn’t/isn’t inherently awful, but he does really dump her in the worst of ways and for the complete wrong reasons. His brother, Otis, unknowingly has picked up the pieces throughout the years from Evelyn’s broken heart and starts to hold them together while both of their hearts heal from unfavorable events in both of their own lives. Their friendship is thrown through the ringer in a drastic turn of events one night when some bad dudes wanna be bad dudes. That leads them to a road that helps both of them reflect on their younger years’ traumas and upbringings.
Otis is a deaf, and communicates through ASL. Evelyn and him connect through this for a variety of reasons, and it’s honestly some of the most wholesome and human interactions that I have ever read in a book.
I can’t say enough good things on this book and I’ll be so happy when it’s out in the wild for all of y’all to read. Please make sure to read through the triggers- as there are some not so happy things that happen to frame our beloved characters and the book’s plots. The amount of people I’ve told about this book is unreal. I’ve been singing it’s praises since chapter one.
No joke.
So, let’s chat about it. in our hands is the first book I’ve heard of or read that has ASL representation. Not only does it have ASL representation, it’s fucking GOOD. I gave this book 5 ⭐️’s because the story line was so real. It was believable. It could absolutely happen. The characters were authentic, I truly believe Otis and Evelyn are off living their best lives in the city of Chicago. Don’t tell me otherwise.
@sincerely_lovelarissa writes like a friend telling a story. Her character development is so extraordinary you can’t help but laugh or cry along with them.

This isn’t a spicy spice book and I am so glad. It wouldn’t work if it had that much smut. These characters aren’t like that, sure there is spice but it wasn’t the type that made me blush. Instead it was the type that made my heart warm, it was beautiful and I was so damn excited when they finally got their shit together and fell head over heels for eachother. I just can’t you guys.

Out of the 34 books that I’ve read this year so far, this one is without a doubt top 5 and I have no doubt it would reach similar ranks on your list as well. If you want a romance book that hits all of the right requirements, this is it. I truly believe Larissa is bound for good things and has what it takes to be a household name. I’ll be seeing hearts for a long time after this read and I’m so excited about that.

It was enjoyable to read at parts for sure. I loved Otis. I’m from Illinois and it was fun to read about Chicago. It’s clear the author either lives there or used to at some point.
But something fell flat for me. I don’t really think a romance novel needs to be 450 pages long. Evelyn also drove me up a wall. She went through a lot of things, but basically refused to ever go to therapy and instead just called her bestie her therapist (but like…actually meant it).
While I mentioned my qualm about the book length, the chapters were nicely paced. There were chapters I really enjoyed reading. Evelyn and Otis’s chemistry would be great in one chapter. Then nonexistent in the next. That’s what makes this impossible to rate. A low rating feels too low and a high rating feels too high. And a middle of the road one feels disingenuous.
Also (time to get up on my soapbox)…when a character has no female friends her age at all, but is surrounded by men…I always find that annoying. Does Evelyn hate other women? Is she a pick me? Does she say she’s not like other girls? I know this is me reading things into something that probably isn’t there, but this really bugs me and we don’t have to keep writing it into books. The only 2 other women her age are BOTH just there to play a man’s second choice to Evelyn.

“It’s interesting - when people go through something shitty in life - we think mentioning it will suddenly make them remember and fall into darkness. But any person that’s lived through a traumatic event knows that it’s not forgotten. Your world just kind of becomes… less light.”
I don’t know if I have the words to express how much I loved this book. I could not put it down, and I wish I could have stayed in their world longer. It’s a dual POV and also alternates between the past and the present.
The friends to lovers trope is done so well here. There was no messy third act breakup, which honestly drives me a little crazy. For the most part, when Otis and Evelyn ran into issues, they were able to communicate and maturely work through them. I loved all the supporting characters, and the ASL/deaf community/culture representation is amazing.
There are some heavy topics included in the story, such as rape (not on page), PTSD, anxiety, cheating, alcoholism, and bullying, but I feel like the author handled these issues in a respectful manner.
This book was beautiful and so well done. I could go on forever, but just do yourself a favor and read it.

This book was super sweet & emotional. There were a lot of different traumas our main character dealt with together so please check the trigger warnings!

I’ll be honest this book wasn’t even on my radar. I’d never heard of it until it became one of my recommendations for “12 books for 2024.” I went in with no expectations a s without knowing anything about the plot. HOWEVER, I was blown away. It was such a good, thought provoking book. There were so many times while reading that I thought, surely there aren’t any other big events left in the book? But the , sure enough, something else happens that moves the plot forward! I don’t want to give too much away, but Otis’s character was so unique and special. I’ve never read a fiction book where a main character was deaf. His interactions with the world around him were obviously different, but I love how the author took his differences and made them strengths. I loved the bond between Otis and Evelyn, and that it ran so much deeper than must a relationship. Their deep, multi-faceted love was so well written. One thing I wish I had known before reading was trigger warnings. I don’t think anything that occurred in the book was “too much,” but it’s always nice to be prepared. This one is on KU, so if you have that, I’d definitely put this on your radar if you like the tropes or are looking for something a little different.
