Huge thanks to the awesome Chris for sending me an eARC of this one!

It seems preposterous to consider, but Toronto’s Little Ghost Bookstore will be be turning one in April of 2023. When I think about that, my struggles to comprehend. They feel like they’ve been an integral part of the book community for years already and I consider myself very fortunate to have a couple of my books on their shelves.

As they’ve continued to grow and expand their offerings, we’ve now seen the announcement of launching their own small press and ‘It Looks Like Dad’ by co-owner, J. Krawczyk, is the first release in that line.

I went into this one COMPLETELY blind, knowing just the title and the fact that there was a big-ass spider on the cover!

What I liked: Look, going in blind for this was probably a blessing and a curse. I mean, on one hand I experienced this WTF! novella fresh and was just blown away. On the other hand… I need to kind of tell you some of the stuff that goes down here, so if you read past this point, I’m kind of ruining the ‘blind’ aspect for you!

This novella is essentially a scaled-down Michael Crichton story mixed with a Hunter Shea rampager to give us a phenomenally high-paced, emotional piece. When I say scaled-down though, what I mean is that Krawczyk gives us 600 pages of information in a 200 page story and does a fantastic job of simplifying it and never once losing the reader with hard-to-understand physics and spatial science. It really helped to amplify the story and the craziness going on.

The story follows Kaitlin, who gets a call that her husband has been arrested. It can’t be possible, she thinks because he’s on a work trip, but when she goes to the jail, there he is. Only it isn’t him. It’s a version of her husband from an alternate timeline. And he’s here to try and save his alternate wife and daughter from the apocalyptic event about to happen.

Even within the short page count, we get treated to a Hollywood blockbuster movie with how much action and movement takes place within. It hummed along and the character of Rudy – aka the giant-ass spider – was a cherry on the top.

The ending, while kind of what we expected, works really well and keeps the science aspect alive and well.

What I didn’t like: Going in blind, I was worried at first with how much of the science aspect we would be exposed to. Saying that, don’t let that turn you off, J. does a solid job of keeping things simple and understandable. I know science based horror-novella’s can turn people away, so don’t let that be a worry.

Why you should buy this: Well, here’s a two-parter. The first – by buying this you not only support small press but also small business (and a Canadian small business as well) owned by two of the nicest people out there. The second – you’ll want to buy this considering A) the cover B) the insanely great story within and C) that this novella was a blast from start to finish and absolute hits all of the high notes. I had so much fun with this one and I think J. Krawczyk has hit a home run here!

How can I encapsulate my intense enthusiasm for this special novella? How to categorize? Mostly, just read it! I adored it and I think all Horror geeks should groove on this, especially those who also love science fiction, Multiverses, parallel Earths, time travel, wonderful riffs on the enduring Lovecraft Mythos [let me tell you: this author has NAILED the Cosmic deities, in my opinion, in their ineffable characters and complete indifference to humble useless humanity. He's really driven that point home, and then hammered it in.]

IT LOOKS LIKE DAD is also extraordinarily efficient Aversion self-therapy for both Thalassaphobia and Arachnophobia (the story is SO VIVID that I had to Google geographic distance to be certain I was far enough removed from danger!).

If you adore Apocalypse, Lovecraftian Horror, time travel, Multiverses, "super-hero/villains," body-crafting (wait till you read this!), race to read IT LOOKS LIKE DAD.

I read it yesterday and I want to go reread it already. I have one immensely favorite adorable character but I won't identify because I don't want to spoil the intense experience waiting on every new reader of IT LOOKS LIKE DAD. I'll be standing in line for each future offering from Jason Krawczyk and the illustrious Little Ghost Books.

No electrons were harmed in the making of this Review.

Within a quick 200 pages, author-director J. Krawczyk unfolds a tightly paced, action-packed story that begins with a doppelganger mystery that rips into cosmic horror on an epic scale. A thoroughly enjoyable read from the opening image of a deep sea diver crawling up onto a frozen beach to the closing images of titanic god-monsters striding the earth. The star of the story (for me, anyway) is a giant multi-eyed spider who, without a single line of dialogue, nevertheless endeared himself to this reader. Kudos!

This book is a helluva lotta fun. Tight writing, fantastic pacing, and a wickedly imagined near future chaos. Fantastic characters as well - a blast to read.

Slice of life apocalyptic horror. It Looks Like Dad features a fantastic mix of intimate character moments, visceral lofi sci-fi action, and cosmic horror on an unfathomable scale. Krawczyk’s story brims with shocking violence and jaw-dropping imagery, the story propelled by an ensemble of realistically rendered characters and their love for one another.

It Looks Like Dad by J. Krawczyk is a tale of doppelgängers, parallel worlds, and danger.

The characters were all amazing! Every single one of them was an absolute treat to follow as the story progressed. I especially loved Rudy, which was not the character I thought I would enjoy!

The humor and witty banter here also had me cracking up, which was a nice pairing with the action and bloodshed. There were even bits of grief. Phew, this book covered so much!

I’m seriously obsessed with this tale! It was like reading while walking through a fun house; I was never quite sure what I was looking at, but I knew the path would become clear soon enough.

Dnf at about 50 pages in. I have no good grasp on what is even going on in this story, that's why I'm not going to rate it. But I clearly didn't like what I read so far, that's why I stopped. I fou nd the storytelling very confusing and considering that there is some highly unusual cosmic-alien-body double stuff going on I wanted some clearer writing. Not writing by an indie writer trying to sound smarter by swinging the thesaurus around. The synopsis made this sound like an apocalypse tale where some sort of creature had taken over the dad in the family, and maybe that's where we would have headed, but there is so much more going on, crazy wild stuff that I didn't enjoy reading about.

I was excited to get to this. I decided to purchase this rather spontaneously on my last visit to Little Ghosts (a wonderful little Horror bookstore in Toronto), swayed by the idea of supporting their in-house printing press, this title being the first release. So it hit me with a bit of a bad taste when in the author's note I read that the writer in question is the husband of the owner. I mean, I know how the world works, people get ahead by knowing someone, many will argue there is nothing to this. But I was disappointed to realize that they simply published their "own" book. No one relayed that information to me in the store, they all just said "it's really good" and I feel a bit tricked into purchasing this book. You can't objectively tell me you love a book when it's by your husband/ your boss's husband. That disappointed me in hindsight.

The cover design is awesome and all being said and done I still wish I could have gotten into this but it was truly not my cup of tea.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes Horror with a little bit of Action / Comedy.

It's a lot of fun and easy to read.

I met the author at the Little Ghosts store and they described this book as being like a disgusting version of Terminator. That's a pretty cool description and enough for me to want to read a book but I also think that it undersells how great the story is. It combined the best of Lovecraftian horror, body horror, and family drama.

If you like books like this, or horror books in general, I hope you get the chance to go to the Little Ghosts store in Toronto. The staff and owners are really friendly, they have a good selection to choose from and they give great recommendations.

This started out wonderfully! There’s a great premise but it quickly falls apart. Every character seems to have a name beginning with C, which is confusing. It reads like an unedited first draft. It’s riddled with typos, missing words, and even an incorrect “you’re”. That kind of thing just pulls me right out of a story.

RUUUUUDDDDYYYYYYYY

A lot packed into a little. Also, fewer “C” character names would’ve helped lessen the growing confusion within the writing.
Enjoyed the expanding universe, but it did feel like more drafts were needed.

Still happy with my spontaneous purchase.
Thank you Little Ghosts!

A mashup of cosmic and body horror with strong core themes of family and sacrifice. I did not expect to cry reading this, like damn. Especially fun horror if you like (or maybe hate?) bugs!

Based on the cover and the book description I was expecting something darker and sinister, so I was caught off guard by how fun this story is. Sure, it has its dark moments, but it's more action-packed sci-fi horror as opposed to dark and dreadful Lovecraftian horror. A few moments felt rushed, and I wished I'd gotten a bit more lore out of some of the characters, but it is a very enjoyable read. Also, Rudy is the best part and I needed more of him!

Time travel mixed in with cosmic horror!

A fun read, that comes off a little like an action/horror movie.

By far Rudy was my favorite in the story!

Read this if: you're ready to fall in love with a giant spider the way other people fell in love with droids, if you like parallel universes/time travel that ties timelines together beautifully (but not predictably), and if you can see the horror and beauty in body augmentation (you have to be able to see both. Rudy knows the fangs-in-hands thing is creepy here, but he's cute and it's necessary for survival). Also if you like family bonds being tested and rebuilt at the centre of a horror story - this one is definitely for you.

I enjoyed the premise of the story. It was sometimes a bit hard to follow but I think it would make more sense in a visual medium. Don’t want to say more lest I give spoilers but it was a fun read and the cover art is cute 😊

Like how most dads describe their children, there was a lot of potential but it just ended up a disappointment.

This story definitely struggles to juggle the intensive lore and complex character dynamics in its restrictive page count. It introduces ideas such as body sharing/ fusion, parallel dystopian worlds, time travel, multi-universal bounty hunters, demigods and multiple povs, all in 115 pages. It was a mess!

The best part about this book was Rudy, they felt like the only character with a consistent personality. There was a fun balance of murder machine to its enemies but softy to his friends. Their design was cool and the process to which they were fused with Rob was intense. All round the most interesting part of the book and I wish we’d got more back story as to why these two specially fused/ how they came to be so close (metaphorically- but also tbf how does the fusion work too??)

So many unanswered questions, it felt like the first draft for a much bigger story that the author couldn’t be bothered or didn’t know how to expand upon. Maybe if we’d cut down the lore a bit and removed things such as the demigods and massive unexplained monsters then this could have been a neater novella.

Also just wanted to point out how poorly edited this book is. There are so many stunted sentences and repetitive descriptions. The dialogue was formatted weirdly and often times you lose track of who’s talking. There is at least three word vomit paragraphs on each page and it’s clear the author wanted to include a many words from the thesaurus as they could. It felt like listening to someone learn a new word and then use it all the time even if it doesn’t work. Also the random POV shifts and flashbacks that are just thrown in randomly with no rhyme or reason?? So confusing.

So overall, I was disappointed by this book as the foundations are definitely there, but there’s absolutely no building on top of them.

This was a really fun ride of a book! Nothing too deep or long to intimidate, and a great character in Rudy. I genuinely enjoyed this.

That being said, I found the ending to be a little lacking. It felt like it went too quickly and while I feel like I get it, something still feels unresolved to me. I agree with others that the editing could be better, and I think some form of timeline in the chapters would be helpful. Like one chapter I was really confused only to realize it was the past. Wish there was a bit more focus on the apocalypse, the relationship to Constance and a bit more backstory on how the characters got to where they are. The foundation is there, I just wish the building was a bit taller.

I would still recommend this as a more cerebral style of horror/sci-fi and hope others take the chance with it despite the reviews of others. Some of my critiques are based on wanting the author to fill in what I see as blanks, where others might really enjoy that space to imagine what happened. Would love to see this universe expanded on, as I love Lore building, even if it’s bit by bit.

Social Worker Kaitlin Chambers gets a call from the police to pick up her husband and is shocked to discover that the person waiting for her is not her husband but some kind of doppelganger who is dead set on getting her and her daughter away to a remote cabin for their protection as eldritch monsters are converging on them.

What I liked:
- doesn't outstay its welcome
- Rudy the spider

What I didn't like:
- plot is confusing, so don't expect answers of any kind
- I found the story a bit hard to follow at times, nothing is really explained

This is kind of a "bad things are happening to these people" story, the kind where things aren't explained and doesn't really get any closure. I have a hard time with these kinds of story in horror. I find in other genres, novellas usually aren't bad cause they can better set the world and there are certain world rules to obey. With otherworld horror stuff, it can just be batshit. So if you like this kind of story, this will be for you. If not, you can finish it but it will have no lasting impact.

A super wacky read! I borrowed this book from my friend and had no clue what I was about to get myself into. I found it read like a movie playing in my hand, which makes sense after I read the biography at the end and the authors film history. Ignoring some of the spelling mistakes, (p.188 “Atlactch” and Kaitlyn mispelled somewhere in the middle i forgot to note it). I love the imagery as it wasn’t overly descriptive and would’ve loved this to be a full length 500 page story.

I did also often find it difficult to follow the dialogue and had to reread parts to figure out who was talking to you. For example in the last two pages there’s a scene where Constance suggests Roobis tea and then answers herself saying “sounds good” to Camilla who im pretty sure is the one supposed to he saying that. little things like this had me confused at times.

This was a slog but I was determined to finish it and glad that I did, so I could find there was a glimmer of an interesting premise in this.

Otherwise, it was sadly a huge disappointment. I love Little Ghosts Bookshop so had been excited to hear they begin publishing too, but for me this was a bad start.

With contradictions, confusion and paragraphs of word salad, I found this to be badly written, badly edited and badly formated. On the plus side, the cover art is great, but this one is definitely a case of don't judge a book by its cover.

Fun, exciting novella will all sorts of wonderfully whacked-out ideas that all come together. If you have seen any of the author's films (He Never Died, She Never Died, Sunset Superman [aka Don't Mess with Grandma]), you know that he can deliver on "interesting" premises and can write one hell of a fight scene - and this novella shows he can do that in prose and not just in film. Really fun stuff

Honestly I should have skipped after first half but wanted to give it a chance. This needs a lot more work, it feels like a first draft. Poorly written. Poorly edited. Also - not a novel, 200 pages of poor formatting, to stretch out a novella at best.

This was a lot of fun.
Sat down and read the whole thing in one sitting.
J has such a knack for dialogue and his prose has been flashed out nicely since his last novella. Lots of horrible and disturbing imagery and you can tell the author loves playing around in this setting. I would die for Rudy; easily the most competent character in the whole story.

I am definitely eager for his next work.

Also the book itself is nifty. Feels good to hold. Great cover art.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It blends cosmic horror, gore, multiverse madness, and a giant spider named Rudy, what more could you ask for?

If I had one complaint, it’s that I wish it were longer. At just 200 pages, it felt like we were only scratching the surface of a much bigger world. I would’ve loved to spend more time getting to know the characters and exploring the bizarre, unsettling universe they inhabit.

Still, it’s a solid, fast-paced read that delivers on its weird, wild title. Definitely worth picking up if you’re into dark fiction with a comedic flair.
