Love that says something, instead of just looking like it.
Love you can always trust to feel like home.
For both of them, it’s something that has always been just outside of their peripheral, something to be observed rather than experienced. A depth of feeling reserved for people who were “into” that, those with a different outlook, those more… deserving.
Until their paths cross.
Lines are crossed.
And maybe the stars are crossed too, because the connection and chemistry are so off the charts that they can’t stay away from each other, can’t avoid it... even if they think they should.
As I was reading this book I kept thinking about how perfect it was. The characters, settings, music, food, fashions, colloquiallisms, just the whole damn thing!!! This book MEANT SOMETHING to this author. The messages she chose to impart through this work may change lives, and to me, that's a good thing. Buy it, read it, and ENJOY!!!
Welcome to the new generation of Mahogany Heights. Love Notes was absolute perfection. From the characters, the setting, and the food to the romance between Jules and Troy, this book was a whole vibe. Jules and Troy were the perfect couple to introduce this series. The chemistry and passion between them was absolutely amazing. This story was a little bit of a slow burn between Jules and Troy as they tried to fight their attraction to each other but, because their attraction to one another was so strong, they didn’t put up much of a fight. Jules comes off as seemingly confident and full of life but, she's dealing with some demons from her past which, is the reason for her move back to The Heights. Troy is like the little boy lost because, he grew up in foster care and he’s longing to know his biological family. These two embark on a journey to healing and growth from their complicated pasts. Along the way, Jules and Troy build a bond that allows them to organically fall in love. CCJ is known for taking her characters through it so, I was pleasantly surprised there was little to no drama in this book. Aunt Darcy and Uncle Will were perfection. They stole the whole damn book. I love that CCJ takes us back to Mahogany Heights and we get to revisit with some of our favorite people and places (Urban Grind, Honeybee, Pot Liquor, Posh Petals, and Fresh Cutz). Love Notes was a beautiful love story. It was relatable, romantic, sexy, funny, and full of young black fabulousness. I love the idea of a black community where our culture thrives and black businesses are successful. If you have not read this book, do so ASAP. I promise you will not be disappointed.
My first Christina c Jones book and it won't be my last. Despite my average rating, I really enjoyed the uniqueness of our characters. Our heroine was sassy and really confident in herself which is refreshing to see. Meanwhile, our hero was firm about things he wanted. It was also super hot.
I absolutely loved this book! Healing, found family, finding someone that just gets you, supports you. In all ways. Real characters I could relate to. Low angst/drama but with serious life issues. Sweet, celebratory, sexy. I loved it. Happy reading!!
4.5⭐️ Christina C Jones has done it again! Another amazing couple that I love to bits! I love how comfortable they were together and how effortlessly they fell into being a couple. They were both so supportive and really brought out the best in each other
The book deals with deep topics like childhood abuse and family issues so bear that in mind. But overall a heartwarming beautiful story
This was such a cute little wholesome story. I really enjoyed the dating aspect of this love story. The walks, the dinners, getting to know each other’s desires and interests it was all so refreshing. Sometimes we see the physical connection first and then the rest comes later but here we saw it all. My heart went out to both Troy and Jules as the navigated their individual traumas. Lord I was in tears when he got his ancestry results. I thoroughly enjoyed their blooming love! Once again Christina knocked it out of the park.
I loved this story, it started off hot but to experience and delve deeper into the characters made me fall in love. I couldn’t wait to see how it would all turn out. Jules and Troy had more in common that just their sexual chemistry. I cannot wait to dive into the Equilibrium series. ❤️
When I tell you this story evoked some kind of emotion..made my eyes sweat. It definitely hit home for me and it’s why I love “found family” tropes so much because it’s literally my story. I’m so thankful I found my person that gets me like Troy just got Jules and vice versa. All the freaking feels!! I love when a couple has a one night stand and then “tries” to fight feelings for a while. Delicious. Immediately downloading book 2!
Oh many this was so good. I loved the pace and that there was never some big blow up or forced misunderstanding taken to far type fight. I grinned like a dork reading this book. Ms Jones is gonna me my go to for contemporary romance cause she still manages to keep it to at least a level 2/5 on the spicy scale
Couldn’t put this down! It’s was perfect! I loved reading about both characters learn each other and process what their feeling and actually experience their relationship develop. It was beautiful! From start to finish. And the spice was quite nice.
Christina C. Jones (CCJ) is a master storyteller, and the blurb for this story reads like lush poetry, but it doesn’t truly tell the reader any details *about* the story. Thus, I’m going to couch my glowing review behind a spoiler tag, just to be safe.
Reading this reminded me that I should be dipping into Christina C Jones' backlist more often. Her books have such a distinctive voice and sense of humor, and they're so smart about romance tropes. Even when some of the iterations don't 100% work for me, I'm always glad I've picked one of her books up and spent time in its universe.
Love Notes introduces us to Jules, a photographer, and Troy, a barber, and their one-night-stand-turned-love-story. Both of them have their own things going on: Troy has sworn off romance as a distraction from his job and his plan to get his life back on track, Jules is also incredibly dedicated to her business. Both also have complicated backstories around biological family (Troy grew up in foster care, Jules is estranged from her mother). These backstories inform who they are as people and many of the actions they take in their relationship, without ever feeling like they're being exploited for plot conflict.
This book takes on a premise that can be hard to find really high stakes for: a one night stand between two unattached, consenting adults who really like each other, but still refuse to get into a relationship. That dynamic in a romance novel can kind of leave you with a feeling of... ok, so why don't they just get together now, though? And I really liked how the book established why not, and kept tension there, through some small but well-observed moments. Troy, in particular, is definitely trying to swear off any kind of attachment, and I believed it. There's a great scene where you learn that Troy has lost a bet about whether he'd be able to stay away from one-night-stands, and is going to have to let his friends cut his hair after he sleeps with Jules. It's a fun (and funny) scene, but it also goes a LONG way to establishing that Troy actually cared about his promise to stay single, and particularly that he cared that he'd made that promise to his friends (and a mentor, who is there, and you can tell Troy is legitimately upset to disappoint). It was a really interesting exercise in how a single scene can set up some meaningful stakes for a common romance trope.
And WOW, does this book do an amazing job of distinguishing between the voice of the hero and the heroine. I mean, I have no experience writing but... it seems like that might be extra hard to do in alternating 1st person POV, which this book is? And it's a master class in writing where you can drop a reader into any part of the book and they'll know who's talking.
I will say that ... there were a number of major themes in this book that are quite simply Not My Thing Personally. Among them are There were times when characters reacted to these things in a way that was hard for me to read. But in every instance, the author was careful to show WHY a character was reacting a certain way, why their history made them feel the way they did, how maybe other characters felt differently (and got to express that). So while this is probably never going to be my favorite title by this author (for the record, that's I Think I Might Love You), I was definitely reminded to pick up more of her impressive backlist.
I enjoyed this book , it's a good story , The Chemistry is off the chain !Troy and Jules's back stories were emotional and I felt I wanted more , the seriousness of both of their stories deserved more time. I'm happy , with the story I read , but dammit I wanted more.
Jules’s confidence was inspiring! Fresh start plots always appeal to me so I was completely on board with Jules’s pivot to returning to her hometown after 9 years away to start her own photography business. (Does a photographer need a storefront? Her business decisions didn’t instill much faith in me but her photography sounded amazing.) She and Troy have a one night stand and both have valid reasons for why it can’t be more, even if they keep orbiting one another. I love how interconnected CCJ’s series are. Fresh Cuts is Carter’s shop and it was fun to get updates from him and Viv.
There were three reasons why this didn’t work better for me: 1. The stepfather subplot.
2. Jules’s Aunt Darcy.
After I finished reading, I was looking at the series to see where Jules’s cousin Anika’s story was and realized I read Bittersweet a couple of years ago. I did not like her parents there either and I felt so validated.
3. There was a lot of casual sexism/misogyny, sexual harassment, and slut-shaming.
Characters: Jules is a 27 year old Black photographer. Troy is a 31 year old Black barber shop manager. The barber shop cat is named Storm. This is set in Mahogany Heights.
Content notes: attempted sexual assault , verbal aggression and threats of violence by both MCs toward each other’s exes, past depression and suicidal ideation (FMC), FMC’s stepfather was sexually inappropriate with her at 14 (), FMC has been estranged from mom since age 16 (moved in with aunt and uncle at age 14), past death of FMC’s parents (dad as a child, mom more recently), past foster care (MMC), search for biological family , unprotected sex (no pregnancy), Plan B use, family planning discussion, FMC destroys her personal property in a fit of rage, MMC was incarcerated for two years (past drug dealing and unlawful possession of weapon, got out seven years ago), Evil Ex trope, casual sexism/misogyny (e.g. male secondary characters refer to females as “bitches”, comments about PMSing and asking if men are feminists as an insult), casual sexual harassment at barber shop, casual slut-shaming, MMC has a cat he rescued, secondary character announces pregnancy, diet culture, secondary character mentions being on a diet, food compared to crack addiction and experiencing withdrawal, on page sex, alcohol, hangover, STD stigma, gendered pejoratives, gender essentialism, ableist language, mention of physical assault by secondary character (aunt punched uncle when he first hit on her), mention of gender reveal parties
Troy and Jules were one of those couples who found each other at a time in their lives where they were both going through something. On the surface, they each had different struggles, but at the core, the trauma of both their pasts was an understanding between them that turned their one night stand turned friendship into something more.
Jules is new to Mahogany Heights, opening her photography studio, and Troy is the managing barber at the barbershop across the street. There are so many layers to this story that are best discovered as you read it. CCJ has a way of revealing parts of her characters' pasts to the reader in a way that makes you understand why she waited to reveal it. That's especially the way I felt with how Troy and Jules organically opened up to each other as the story went on.
I'd highly recommend the audiobook because it was SMEXY.
TROPES: black romance/OWN voices/BIPOC; photographer (heroine); barber (hero); one night stand; hero/heroine with emotional trauma; found family
TRIGGER WARNINGS: mentions of child sexual grooming (in the past); attempted sexual assault
I couldn't recall if I'd read this book before, but the more I listened to the audible, I confirmed I did! I remember enjoying it. I am a bookcover person, so having the cover changed confused me. This audible performance was absolutely beautiful! They brought CCJ's writing to life with so much passion! Julie's & Troy found each other with no expectations beyond the here and now. But life offered more and they embraced it! 💛💚💜
Listen, when I heard we were going to get another crew from Mahogany Heights, I was too excited. I mean, I absolutely love the old crew AND the neighborhood, so I was over the moon to learn that we'd still be getting more of this young, black, fabulousness. And Troy and Jules were the perfect couple to intro us to this new series. Now, I'm sure that every time I read a CCJ novel, I declare that couple my favorite, and I'm not gonna change that habit now. Troy and Jules were wonderful. Jules swept in, all and poor Troy lost his focus, one of his goals, and all of his hair, lol.
Jules was seemingly so confident and so full of life, but her demons were the absolute worst. I loved how she embraced her sexuality and My heart went out to Troy; things started out rough for him, but I was proud of how he turned his life around. Even with the whole 'hoe phase' thing, he was working towards living his best life.
I loved that, despite that events of their first meeting (wink, wink), things built up somewhat slowly between these two. There was a bit of a slow burn between them as they tried to fight their attraction to each other. I like when couples can't seem to help but tell their feelings, instead of playing games and or playing hard to get. Loved that Troy and Jules were upfront with each other. Well, kinda, LOL.
Aunt Darcy and Uncle Will were perfection. Almost stole the whole damn book. But then again, I always enjoy seeing older happily married couples still getting their groove on. I was surprised and happy to learn about their connection to Troy. Lots of other interesting side characters that I'm looking forward to getting to know.
I really hated to see this one end. Hurry up, CCJ! We want more!
This book was not my favorite, but it wasn’t bad. Either the story was decent, but I felt like it was just missing something, and the way that the chapters flopped around it was a little bit uneven.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½📷
My thoughts: 📱50% 4:09:19 Ch. 7 Jules - It's okay. I can tell they are trying to build something, but there's just too much back and forth for me to take it seriously. Love isn't really growing, but I predict this going to magically be there when the time comes. 📱70% 5:52:51 Ch. 9 - Okay, I take it back, they are building something real and I'm starting to enjoy the story.
This story became more serious the closer it got to the end, but I wasn't wrong about its lack of depth. It brought up some deeper issues but I felt like she swept the process of dealing with them and the conclusions under the rug a bit, and some storylines fell off. I was going to start a cozy mystery and then go to book 2, but the way she ended this book has me wanting to dive into book 2 immediately, as I originally planned, to see if it has the answers lacking here.
Recommend to others: Yes. it's not a slow burn but it takes its time.
Equilibrium 1. Love Notes (2018) 2. In Tandem (2019) 3. Bittersweet (2019) 4. Grow Something (2018) 5. Frosted. Whipped. Buttered (2019) 6. Plus One (2019) 7. Press Rewind (2019) Holidays in the Heights (2022)
3.75 rounded up. Come on confident FMC! soooo nice and refreshing to read from a FMC that wasn't insecure or second guessing if someone wanted her for half the damn book lol. This was great and super sexy when it needed to be! What was intended to be a one night stand grew into something more for our two main characters. It could've easily felt insta lovey but the way CCJ wrote this it didn't and I appreciated that. This is the first book in what I believe is a duology series that also has a couple of other novellas that exist in the same town. ill def be picking them up as im making my way through CCJs blacklist titles this year.
When aunt Darcy said, "a dildo can't compete with a warm dick and a strong back." I was like yes aunty!!!!!!!! You ain't ever lie to me!!!!! 😭😭😭
The way I geeked out at who his probation officer was, had me mildly embarrassed 😂😂💀
When I read a book that isn't about m(b)illionares/stalkers/psychopaths/mafia (any criminal activity). This is exactly what I wanna read. I need to feel giddy, fluffy and all that good stuff. Like I know the characters and that's exactly what I got.
I'm wondering why I let this sit on my TBR for so long, because this was so good!
Juliet aka Jules was a talented photographer that strived to capture beautiful memories. Her spirit was troubled due to an unfortunate situation where she was unable to feel safe at her mother's home. Year's later her heart still feels that trauma, but she feels like she is ready to move forward but life runs her smack into the beautiful Troy.
I ain't gone hold yall cuz Troy was definitely bookbae. He was tall, dark, and handsome with locs....I mean let's go. He too had a troubled past and felt like he was just wondering with no anchor. He thought he was moving forward until Jules crossed his path and had him questioning everything. Baby when I say their chemistry was off the charts, I mean it. They were both giving just as much as they received and I was here for it all.
Listen this was so well written because you could literally feel their anxiousness, their concern, their pain. I also loved how different of a story this was. The characters were vibrant and felt like people you would actually interact with in real life. Definitely worth the read.
THIS BOOK! I absolutely adored this book it was the perfect read. Christina C. Jones is such a fantastic writer and I cannot believe I’m just now reading her books. This book brought me so much joy and I basically swooned the entire time I read this. Jules and Troy are the definition of perfections and couple goals. I loved seeing them grow as individuals but also as a couple. Jules and Troy have gone through so many hardships in life and I’m so happy they were able to find happiness within each other. Christina C. Jones wrote the perfect book that balances funny, sweet, and difficult topics in this book.
I would also mention a trigger warning for I would describe it as sexual harassment. This topic is discussed very well in my opinion.
I’ve loved the now Mahogany Heights crew since reading the Serendipitous Love series and it’s great to see it evolve. I want to know more about Jules and Troy. There is so many questions I need answered but since this is book one of a series, I’m hoping to get those answered in future books.
