As a software developer, this book means SO much to me! 😭🫶 I have been scouring the corners of the internet for a tech / software dev romance for so long and this was everything I could have hoped for.

- mental health rep & pro therapy
- reverse grumpy sunshine☀️
- Taylor Swift AND Harry Styles references
- actually healthy relationship
- found family
- no 3rd act breakup 🙏
- spice 🌶

What happens when you pair a jaded startup tech girl boss (I’m sorry there’s no other way to describe her) with a golden retriever, sunshine in human form software developer?? Fireworks. Start Us Up is about this power couple pairing up to develop a match-making AI framework. Hmmmm I wonder where that could possibly go… 😉

Tbh I was so scared that I would get the ick or be disappointed by the tech and development aspect of this book but I ended up being so impressed. 💻 I can really tell that Lexi did her research! (Only thing I would change would be the use of “coder” but minor details.) This was the PERFECT balance of romance and the the tech plot. And there was spice!!! I ate it up! Heath is so precious.

Ivy really captured what it is like to be a woman in STEM and I just wanted to give her a hug so many times. Lexi Blake’s writing reminded me of Ali Hazelwood so many times, and not just because of the women in STEM trope. This may be one of my top favorite romances of 2023 💖

Thank you so much Lexi and Valentine PR for the early review copy <3 I can’t recommend this enough to all the tech / STEM girlies or just if you are looking for your next great romance book.

Song Vibe: Empire State of Mind; Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys
My Spice Rating: 🌶🌶.5/🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶

I have been craving some romance lately, and I couldn't wait to see what Start Us Up by Lexi Blake had in store for me. This was a really fun romcom with a touch of spice that features a strong-willed and smart AF female lead. I liked Ivy and Heath as characters, and I really enjoyed the banter between them and the relationship that slowly builds throughout the book. Heath's grandmother is also a highlight of the story, and this is filled with a lot of very likable characters along with a couple not so likable. Not only is it a romance, but this book is also about female relationships, and the author's dedication actually brought tears to my eyes. I loved the attention she gave to how female friendships, mentors, and family members can shape and build us up as both women and professionals.

Blake tackles serious topics in the storyline, but Start Us Up is also filled with love and laughter, and there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments that are super entertaining. This is also a real gem on audio and Kitty Bang was exactly the person I needed to narrate Ivy. She did such a great job making the story come alive, and she was a perfect fit for the characters as well. This is all told from Ivy's POV unlike the more common man/woman alternating romance, and I really think it is because it was about so much more than that piece. I am extremely happy that this is the first of a series, and I can't wait to see what Blake has up her sleeve for book 2!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book was such a perfect mix of sweet and serious, and I had a lovely time with it! I am so obsessed with the unique and eccentric cast of characters! Ivy's relationships with all of them were painfully realistic and so emotionally written. The actual love story itself was so sweet and a really accurate representation of romance. Plus, the commentary and representation of sexism in the workplace as well as sexism in the media's representation of scandals, was not only accurate, but also enlightening! This was honestly an unforgettable story that I can't recommend enough. ❤️

what I loved:
🌈 grumpy gf x sunshine bf
⚙️ tech boss fmc
⛅ found family
✨ "the man" by taylor swift coded
💗 characters are working on a project together
⭐ addictive writing style!

sharing my thoughts and review of this before i forget hehe (brain dump first aka this is my raw honest review of this book. will edit later)

I personally LOVE workplace romance and have been on a hunt for a good one recently. I'm grateful for the opportunity to receive an ARC of Start Us Up in exchange for an honest review so here's mine:

Reading this book made me realise that I love reading about characters working their way in start-ups or their own business because that's something I would love to do as well. It is always amazing to see the characters grow as they go through the challenges of starting a business and it's well-written in this book. Of course, as it's fiction, it seems much easier on paper than in reality and the FMC had all the connections made prior aka a proper mentor to guide her and knowing where to connect and find investors for your ventures.

What I also love is that it's not merely about the connection between the main characters but rather the people around the Ivy too starting from home (her mother), to her friends and mentor that she has to guide her through her ventures. The book does have themes of grief as it portrays how the passing of her dad affects her relationship with her mum.

I'd say, although the romance is barely there, I love that it's written that way because the main focus is on Ivy and her growth (Womens Fiction duh). So if you love seeing women succeed and all for that women empowerment, you'll definitely enjoy reading this book. Also, there are so many taylor swift references so if you're a big fan, you'll love this. Oh, and maybe because I recently watched the Barbie movie but if you watched it too, this book gives off similar vibes to that 😭❤️

It's not a full 5-star read for me because the end seems abrupt or maybe i just expected there to be more and not some cliche ending/wrap-up to the book but I enjoyed reading most parts it nevertheless.

Thank you to the author, Lexi Blake, and Valentine PR for the ARC.

If you’re into tech/coding this book is for you. This is a slow burn friends to lovers and normally books like this drag too much, there’s no blow up or tense angst going on before the love, however this book didn’t give me that. The pacing was great and Nonna and the side characters were awesome. Heath is such a great guy you can’t help but like him, especially the relationship he has with Lydia. Ivy is jaded and skeptical of everyone—even Heath. However will true love be able to decode her heart?!

Thank you so much to @valentine_pr_ and @authorlexiblake for #gifting me an ARC to read and review!

Enjoyable! I like that Ivy was a strong personality but with believable insecurities. I loved Heath even though he was more of a beta male. I lean towards alpha’s but there was just something about him that makes you want him by your side. He was very supportive and wouldn’t let Ivy pull away. I hated her ex and was afraid he was going to get away with everything so I’m glad we got a bit of closure there. Overall, a good book!

I thought this one was really sweet, and more serious than I thought it would be. It did have the levity and playful banter of a rom-com (such as the classic save of the MMC coming to her rescue when she’s been put on the spot by her ex-boyfriend) but the central issues were rather serious, and I liked how it was dealt with. Ivy is a woman and tech, and a rather successful one. She’s recently been brought down to rock bottom after the collapse of her company, while her CFO/ex-boyfriend runs off to another C-suite gig without a scratch on him. Ivy’s relationship with her mom also isn’t that good; and ever since her father died, it seems there is no way for her to get her mother to be proud of her. So it’s understandable why Ivy constantly feels like the world is against her, and is rather traumatized by it. And when a good thing happens, how long will it last? And does she deserve it? Those kinds of thoughts. Our MMC Heath is also a techie, and he has developed an AI that is supposed to be an incredible matchmaker; just like his grandma, Lydia, which she is famously known for in Little Italy. Ivy joins forces with Heath on building up this technology and business, seeing it as her ticket back to the top. Heath wants the program to do well, but his focus is really Ivy. As she tries to push him away, he meets her at every turn, stays during every argument, and works through it with her. Ivy wants a fight, she’s used to a fight— but here is someone who will fight for her. Will she be able to get used to it? Or will she walk away from him?
I really enjoyed this read and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good contemporary romance. I would have loved to see what became of Emma (the AI) and felt like it ended too soon, but that’s just because I wanted more! I loved this story. Also, I swear Harry Styles is mentioned in like every other book I read. It’s not a complaint— I love Harry. I just find it fascinating. He’s being immortalized in so many different ways now.

***3.5/5 Stars***

Start Us Up was an adult romance that was a wonderful blend of family, friendship, love and finding yourself. Ivy had been successful, but let her boyfriend destroy her business in the tech world out in California. Back home in New York, and living with her mom, she was trying to find herself again. What her next project would be. How she could fix her name. And how to find happiness again. She had two best friends from childhood that she was still close with, and a struggling relationship with her mother. This book dove deeply into the relationships in Ivy's life. And with strong found family vibes, I enjoyed reading this story.

I realize I've spent the last year so focused on getting back to the top that I haven't let myself want anything else.
I want him. I want everything he can give me.

My favorite person in this story was Heath. From their first interaction, I was intrigued by him. He was kind, caring, patient, and when Ivy decided to go into business with him, I loved their negotiations. But the moment I realized how much I loved him was when he stepped in to protect Ivy. And sneak a dog a little goodie to make her like him haha. Ivy and Heath had a lot in common. They both worked in the tech world, were loving people and fascinated in the AI project they were working on together. Also they both didn't want to fail their families. On top of Heath, I liked Ivy. She was so relatable and easy to click with. Together, they felt like the perfect match.
He leans forward and kisses my forehead, the gesture making my heart squeeze.
"I...I've given you every reason to push me away."
He winks. "And still I didn't. And that's why you should speciously consider door number three."

The side characters in this book were definitely shining stars. Between Heath's grandma and roommate who I both loved. To Ivy's best friends who felt so real. To even Cece and Ivy's mom. They rounded out the story so wonderfully. But I did struggle with two things. While tech fascinates me, those parts about work felt dull. And there was almost too much talk about feelings. Yet while there were some lags in this story, at the base of it was wonderful friendships, and a love story that had a little bit of steam. This was an interesting book to discuss with my book club, and I am interested in trying another book by Lexi Blake!

i really liked the plot of this!! although i did like the plot, i feel like the entire book was all about tech. i wanted way more romance. i felt like we didn’t get to see the relationship between them develop. the romance felt more like a subplot in this book. we learned more about tech and even the relationship ivy had with her friends and her mom. my favorite character in the story was heath’s grandmother. i loved her so much!! i am excited for the rest of the series! can’t wait to learn more about anika and her story!

thank you lexi blake and valentine pr for the arc!!! 💙

3.5✨

I'm very much a romance reader and have to begin by stating this isn't very much a romance book. I expected a bit more of a love story, instead, the focal point is very much on Ivy's personal growth, her fragile relationship with her mother, and her bond with her two closest girl friends. The synopsis read more into romance but it's ultimately women's fiction.

While it's a strongly written book, it's not very much my style. I struggled with this rating due to this, as the book didn't appeal to my taste. Ultimately, I do think my personal preferences are my own and shouldn't reflect too heavily simply because I wished for more romance, because it truly is an otherwise solid read. The plot is astutely developed, (non-romantic) relationships nicely evolved, and at the heart, a wonderful show of personal growth for the protagonist.

I just wish for more romance-- and better chemistry, as I felt it was quite lacking. I was never convinced by the romance, I never felt any connection between the main couple, and that disappointed.

Nevertheless, the book does it job well. It allows its protagonist to be flawed, at times unlikable, but always rootable. You want to see Ivy succeed-- but you also want to see her grow. You want to see her embrace who she is without any perceived mask in place of truth. I enjoyed watching her journey unfold.

Thank you Valentine PR for providing me an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I love Lexi Blake. I adore her. But as much as I wanted to like this book, the first person and general tone just didn't work for me.

The friendship between the three women, which is the central premise of the series, felt kooky and inorganic. The hero also comes across as an annoying do-gooder, which I just wasn't in the mood for. This is another one that bit the dust during my weeks-long reading slump, so take me with a pinch of salt, but feeling no desire to return to it.

Ivy Jensen is a woman trying to succeed in the tech world. She's been interested in STEM since she was in school and was lucky enough to be mentored by a wealthy widow (Cece) although she really only used her as an investor on occasion.

Her friend Harper sets her up with Heath Marino, a coder who needs a little help with the base code on his passion project - a matchmaking app to honor his grandmother, Lydia. Harper secretly hoped Ivy and Heath would date, but she did not expect (nor was she happy when) Ivy bought into Heath's project.

Ivy's ex ruined the business she'd started in California and now it seems he's out to ruin everything she tries to create from here on out.

I liked this story - it had a unique storyline.

Start Us Up is book #1 in the Park Avenue Promise series. It's about Ivy Jensen and Heath Marino. Ivy is back home in New York City after her tech company fell apart due to trusting the wrong person-- her ex, Nick. Ivy meets Heath as a favor to her best friend, Harper. It's a little insta-love, which is not really my favorite, but they are so cute together that it worked in this book.

I enjoyed the author's voice in this book. Plus, the Taylor Swift/Harry Styles references were cute. Ivy's internal thoughts were pretty funny, too. I do wish we could have had Heath's point of view. This is a light romance and focused a lot of Ivy's personal growth with herself, her mother and starting a new company. I am not a tech person at all, so I did struggle a little in the beginning.

Thank you to Get Red PR and Blue Box Press for my gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Start Us Up is the first book in Lexi's newest series, Park Ave Promise.

This book was right down the middle enjoyable for me. I did not hate it but it also did not wow, which honestly surprised me because I love just about anything that Lexi writes.

Start Us Up is definitely woman's fiction than romance as it primarily focuses on Ivy's personal growth with a tad of romance sprinkled throughout. I can read just about anything but having this promoted as a romance, it felt a bit misleading and I think that played into my expectations.

This book is strong and very well written. You can tell that Lexi did her own research, especially when it comes to the more techy aspect of this book and all the ins and outs of that world. The depth she brings to her characters and their interactions definitely kept this book entertaining.

Overall, it's a good read.

I would firstly like to thank the author and GetRedPR for my free copy and box of Start Us Up swag. Unfortunately, I couldn't get into this book and didn't finish after 100 pages.

Ivy is trying to figure out her next steps while licking her wounds from a company crash at the hands of her ex and former business partner. Her friends introduce her to Heath, who is also in the tech world and looking to start up an app business. The two become romantically and businessly entwined, but is this smart? Didn't Ivy already make this mistake? But Heath is different.

I loved the concept of this book and all the #girlboss energy in a male dominant field. However, I didn't think it was written in a way that sucked you in. Rather than experiencing people getting close or seeing what made someone a nice guy, we were just told they were or weren't. The actual scenes fell a bit flat, keeping things at a basic level that didn't satisfy me as a reader.

I think there were some great ideas in this, it just didn't connect for me.

A new series from talented Ms. Blake immediately hooks me and I'm all in. What I love about Ms. Blake's stories continues to hold true in this new series. It is the sense of community and family. Sometimes the family is dysfunctional but there is always a chance for coming around and better understanding. I cried reading this book because it moved me to tears.

This is such an easy 5 stars, I love every thing about this book! I’m almost upset with how quickly I read it because I just didn’t want to leave these characters but I literally couldn’t put it down. This book has the most immaculate black cat/golden retriever energy with an instant connection, forced proximity and working together, with amazing found family vibes and female relationships !!! What more could I have asked for - this was exactly what I didn’t know I needed.

I resonated with Ivy on so many levels and I can’t put into words how happy I am with her arc, all the healing she did and the peace she now has. Ivy is brilliant, highly intelligent and funny, but she is also sensitive, super guarded and trying her best to hide her wounds. She was instantly an relatable and loveable character, it was just so easy to slip into her shoes and take this journey with her. I love her and she deserves all the protection and adoration in the world.

Heath, oh man Heath. Where can I find myself someone just like him, because he is lowkey exactly what I want. Their chemistry is insane, it takes one meeting and snap the connection is there and it’s tangible. This doesn’t feel like instalove at all despite the short time frame, and I’m just obsessed with how Heath was with Ivy. Like he could not have been better. He is exactly what she needed and a whole pile of green flags.

The way he listened to Ivy so intently, how he assured and validated her, how he comforted her when she didn’t even know she needed or wanted it, how he saw her better than anyone else despite just meeting recently. How he respected her, and her ambition and dreams so much. The way he was so sure and confident in them and their future. The way he was so completely and utterly in love with her, the man was heart eyed in the best way. And the hugs!! Their hugs omg! I could go on and on about him for hours I fear. He’s The Man written by a woman, and for sure the dream. And come on, a super hot guy who is also nerdy and adorable whilst respecting, loving and uplifting you. Where! Is! My! Heath!

The female friendships and relationships in this are everything!!! They are so real and raw and beautiful, totally had me in my feels multiple times. Harper and Ani were so good, their friendship is decades in the making and it felt so real. They have their fights but only because there is so much care between them, so much history and hope for each other. Lydia is a star and so deserving of her queendom, every scene with her had me smiling and I’m so happy her and Ivy have each other. Cece and Ivy’s mum were interesting characters, I’m really happy with the redemption for her mum and that things were worked out. And the three of these women are such a hoot together, the best enemies to friends arc (: Also all the good side characters were also a joy, they were 3 dimensional and interesting; Darnell, Thomas, Ria and Ye Joon <3

Thank you so much to Lexi Blake and Valentine PR for this early copy in exchange for my honest review. I loved every single second and could not recommend it more <3

I have been a fan of Lexi Blake's for a while now; I have enjoyed her Masters & Mercenaries Series, Nights in Bliss Colorado Series (written under the pen name Sophie Oak), and her less erotic but just as captivating Butterfly Bayou Series. So when I saw that she was starting a new series about three friends living in NYC, where I am from, I was instantly intrigued.

START US UP is Ivy Jensen and Heath Marino's story. This book starts with a prologue, and I highly recommend you read it because it sets up not only this story but the series, in which we meet the three friends Ivy, Harper, and Anika, and learn how their lives as teenagers are going and how they see their futures.

This author is an auto read for me, I was looking forward to reading this new series. Sadly this one didn't work out for me, not sure why, other than I was bored while reading. I started it last night, didn't make it far before I decided to watch a movie (first time I turned on the tv in 6 months). Then today went to pick it back up and I started and stopped 5 times, took a nap, cleaned the house, started another book, dinked around on the internet, pretty much anything other than read. I feel bad for Ivy and what happened in her last company, but she's boring, even with her eccentric mentor, CeCe. Heath too is boring, despite his matchmaker Grandma. I actually would love to read a book about her matching because because this one with Heath and Ivy isn't for me.

This book is one of those books that has it all.
Not only is the main couple expertly written; Grumpy-sunshine with Ivy being the grumpy one ;) the amount of growth her character goes through had me on the edge of my seat. She is just amazing and Heath is her greatest chearleader. I love his vibe and his personality is just so loveable.

This book also has excellent side characters. Ivy is part of a group of friends, about whom the next books will be. But even more present are the grandmother, mother and mentor. Who are outright hilarious. Lexi created and expertly well done vibe and these characters are just the cherry on top of the story.

This book is funny, emotional, swoony and basically has everything a romance book should have. It’s certainly one of my topreads of 2023!

This book was not my cup of tea. I struggled to read it and almost dnf it. I felt like the whole thing was about tech, and the romance seemed to be more of a side plot in this book.

I couldn't seem to connect with Heath or Ivy. And I found it difficult to relate with their romance because it was a little too insta-love for my tastes. Also, I felt like we didn't get to watch their connection evolve.

Thank you Valentine PR and Lexi Blake for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my gosh I loved this book. I laughed out loud and I got emotional. I want to kidnap Heath for my own, but I guess I will just tell everyone to read this to find their new supportive book boyfriend. Also, I love the fact that there is a matchmaking nonna who has a s3x radar. Do with that what you will. This is the first book in the series and I absolutely cannot wait for the rest!

Ivy was big in the tech world and then she crashed and burned. She moved back home and her friends are trying to set her up with dates, but she just wants to get her life back in track. She gets set up with Heath who is developing an AI that is based on his grandmother’s matchmaking skills, and she cuts a business deal with him instead of dating him. And then when they work together all day, every day to get this business of the ground? Sparks fly.

Thank you to 1001 nights for the copy to review, all thoughts are my own.

3.75-4 stars. This was a good book. Start Us Up is the first book in a brand-new series by Lexi Blake. This is Ivy and Heath's book. Ivy is was a rising star in the tech world when her company went under and her boyfriend, who she worked with, left her in the lurch. Nursing her pride, she is trying to find the next new thing in order to gain her footing in her career. Her friend introduces her to Heath, who has a great idea for a new matchmaking app, in hopes that they will hit it off romantically, which Ivy is not interested in. Heath's grandmother is a legendary, successful matchmaker in her neighborhood of NYC. He wants to start a company where he matches couples up using his grandmother's formula. Ivy is interested in his app, though not just for matchmaking, but for all kinds of other things like restaurants and shopping. She sees in this app the chance to redeem herself to the public and other techies. As Ivy and Heath work together, they get closer and develop feelings for each other. They must race to complete their app before their competition, and Ivy's bitter ex, can.

This is book is a contemporary romance with no romantic suspense, which is a departure for Ms. Blake, who is one of my favorite authors. At first, I felt very disoriented because it seemed like a different writing style than I am used to. The book took some time for me to get into, but it felt more and more like a Lexi Blake book as it went on. The story was good. Ivy and Heath had a reverse grumpy sunshine dynamic. Ivy had some pretty serious baggage to get over, from her past relationship and her parents. She needed some therapy, I think. Heath seemed a little too sunshine at first, almost bland. But as the book went on, I really liked him. He was a doll and adored Ivy, who grew some and who I liked as well. Their romance was a little lower heat and chemistry than I usually find in Lexi Blake books. Also, I would have loved an epilogue and more information about their app. But I still enjoyed this book. There was a fun cast of side characters, including Ivy's two best friends who I think the next two books will feature. I liked them all and I look forward to more to come from this series.

Overall, this was a good book and start to a new series. I was glad Ivy and Heath got together and fell in love. I look forward to more from Ms. Blake and this series in the future.

Thank you Blue Box Press and Lexi Blake for the ARC💕

👩🏻‍💻I was so genuinely surprised at how much this story captivated me. Ivy Jensen had her big break…before she lost. Now she must present a new, profitable tech idea while dealing with the traumas of her past and her recent relationship. What’s quite unfortunate (or very fortunate) for her is that her new business partner has his eyes set on her.

Ivy presents herself as a tough, no bs woman who will do anything to get back to the top. But her new business endeavor is NOT what she had planned for herself nor did she ever expect her business partner, Heath, to bring forth her past and work with her to deal with the feelings she has had locked away for too long.👩🏻‍💻
.
💻Lexi Blake truly knows how to mix plot, romace, humor, and character development into a beautifully wrapped present. I absolutely adored how she wrote Ivy and that we got to see the other side of her tough, girl-boss exterior. Also, Heath😍😍😍 I absolutely loved him and his kindness and patience. It is so refreshing to see well written characters grow and understand how they can create their own happiness in things that they may have not thought about previously. I also felt really involved in the story, like I was there in the room with Ivy, Heath, and their team during every single up and down.💻
.
💕I can’t praise this romance enough and I am so excited for more in this series and just from Lexi Blake as an author💕

5 Star Review Start Us Up (Park Avenue Promise #1) by Lexi Blake

eBook/Audio

It’s no secret that I love Lexi Blake’s writing. In fact, I think I have read almost all of her books. I was so excited when I heard that she had a new series releasing and I could not wait to dive in. Start Us Up is the first book in the Park Avenue Promise series and it was an entertaining, well written story that ticked the boxes for me.

From the first chapter I was invested in Ivy Jensen and Heath Marino’s story. After losing her company that’s to trusting the wrong person, Ivy has returned home to lick her wounds and contemplate her life and where to go now. When an opportunity to present to new investors arises, she knows she needs to take a chance otherwise her career will be over.

From the moment Ivy and Heath met, the sparks flew but Ivy needs to focus on resurrecting her career. Heath writes code and has an app he wants to promote, could he be the one to help her breathe life into her career?

I enjoyed their journey as their relationship progressed and cannot wait to read more in the series. The narration by Kitty Bange, a new narrator to me was entertaining. SHe brought both the story and characters to life for me.

The dynamics between Ivy and Heath are both heartwarming and entertaining. Ivy's intrigue in Heath's matchmaking app, beyond just romantic pairings, adds an interesting layer to the narrative. Her quest for redemption within the tech community is a relatable theme, showcasing her resilience and ambition.

Pop culture references, such as nods to Taylor Swift and Harry Styles, provide a touch of nostalgia and contemporary relevance. However, the writing style may take some readers a while to fully immerse themselves in, as it deviates from typical romance novels by Lexi Blake. It emphasizing humor and a lack of suspense. The blend of romance and comedy gives the story its unique flavor, though it might not resonate with all readers equally.

"Start Us Up" offers a delightful exploration of second chances, personal growth, and the merging of old traditions with modern technology. With its light romance and engaging characters, this book is recommended for readers seeking a breezy read that offers a twist on the conventional romance genre.

Let’s take a look at Lexi Blake. She writes multiple genres and subgenres and she makes it look easy:

Erotic romance: check

Romantic suspense: check

Romantic fantasy: check

Urban fantasy: check

Romantic comedy: check

Small-town romance: check

And, now you can add contemporary romance fiction to her list of success stories. With START US UP, Blake writes what may be my favorite book of hers and is a showcase for the women of her newest series, Park Avenue Promise.

Ivy Jensen is a complicated woman with a heart of gold that I absolutely adore. She’s a brilliant coder and tech boss but convinced she’s not worth the energy when it comes to romance. Her journey is powerful and no doubt familiar to any woman working in a male-dominated profession.

Lexi Blake just gets it. One, her presentation of the tech profession is easy enough to understand while clearly demonstrating the intricacies of how the business end works. Two, she could have easily gone the preachy route while writing about a misogynistic, male-dominated field like so many others have done before her. Instead, she lets Ivy take the lead and she shows readers the hurdles women face in business in a matter-of-fact way.

The relationships between Ivy and her friends, her mother, and her mentor truly stand out. Each one of these women were complicated but portrayed strong, important ways that women can love and support each other. This shined through on almost every page of START US UP.

Heath is adorable and a wonderful match for the highly motivated Ivy. He balances her out in a quiet way, which I absolutely adored. If you are looking for the typical Lexi Blake, “burn-up-the-pages” sex scenes you won’t find that in START US UP. The intimacy between Heath and Ivy is spicy, but not too graphic and is (in my opinion) secondary to the story being told. With Heath we also get his Italian grandmother who is a strong, successful woman herself. She easily fits in with the other amazing women Ivy surrounds herself with and I loved her.

I cannot wait to read more of this series!! Thank you to the author and Blue Box Press for the early copy in exchange for honest feedback.

Ivy Jensen returns home to New York after losing her tech company and her reputation. Looking to work on something fresh and new, she agrees to help Heath Marino, an app developer who is currently working on a matchmaking app based on his grandmother's matchmaking services.

This is centered around a woman in tech and I really appreciated that angle. I love that this sheds light and acknowledges the hardships women face working in that industry (and in positions of power in general). I enjoyed seeing Ivy regain her courage and fight to continue to do what she loves. While I enjoyed the plot itself and liked Ivy and Heath overall, I had a harder time connecting to their romance since it was a bit too insta-love for my tastes. Despite that, I did still enjoyed this one and the quirky cast of secondary characters.

Thank you to the publisher and author for providing a NetGalley ARC in exchange for my honest review!

Ivy is a tech boss who has lost it all and hit rock bottom. Heath is a coder working on an AI platform that he hopes to use for a matchmaking app. When one of her best friends sets her up with Heath, Ivy sees his AI as a way to redeem herself and the two go into business together.

This is a sweet plot with some fun banter but had some underlying deeper aspects. There is a lot of focus on the tech industry. I was glad that the romance was a faster burn for this reason. I loved Ivy and Heath’s relationship. They were the perfect combination of grumpy/sunshine with Heath taking on the sunshine role.

Heath is swoony and I loved how he knew what he wanted, he was just about perfect. Ivy is a bit difficult to connect with at first. She’s jaded and has dealt with hard relationships and an industry where she has to work extra hard to prove herself. I enjoyed seeing her open up to love and work through her relationship with her mom.

The book about complicated relationships is well-written. It also brought a lot of insight into the tech world and what it is like for women. Ivy is flawed, and at times frustrating, but in the end a likable character that I found myself rooting for.
