Hearts of Maya #1

The Sun, The Storm, & The Shadows

Rate this book
The Sun, The Storm, & The Shadows is a diverse Mayan-Inspired fantasy romance that blends romance, magic, & Gods.

Two sisters, Xio and Camila, woke up ten years ago in Zuma, the human lands, with absolutely no memory as to how they got there or anything that happened previously. They are forced to lie, cheat, and steal to make a living. But when one of their jobs goes wrong, they must flee into the Cursed Forest. They had no idea that the magical world of Maya lay just beyond their home, and when they steal from a nearby camp, they are taken prisoner by two astonishingly handsome Fae. As magical as the world of Maya is, the land has been cursed. The Gods of this world have been long dead, and on their journey as captives, they find out they just might be the key to saving it all.

This book series is inspired by the Mayan culture, and while the names of the Gods are the same, this is not a direct retelling of any of their stories. With romance, Gods, Fae, danger, magic, and curses, this adult fantasy series will surely keep you on your toes.

Contains: Forced proximity, fated mates, Mayan Mythology, Gods & Fae, BIPOC Main Characters, Multiple POVs, and spice.

This is the first book in the series and does end on a cliffhanger.

HUGE thanks to the author for sending me the arc of this.

I want to start my review by saying I have been extremely spoiled with some epic fantasy romance this month, so that may have affected how I consumed this book. That being said I adored the dual POV’s from each sister, Camila is my personal favorite because of how much I related to her. I really enjoyed the uniqueness of this world and the Mayan aspects to it. I can genuinely say I have not read a book like this yet! I LOVED that all our main characters are POC. I also loved that the sisters are in their mid twenties, we need more age diversity with FMC’s in fantasy books.

Overall this was a fun, quick read, and definitely recommend trying it out. I had a couple small issues that bumped my rating down to 4 stars.

- I would have liked a bit more time with just the sisters before they get taken, it felt a tad rushed to me.
- I wanted more of a slow burn romance, especially since this will be a series.

Again, still a solid book! Especially for a debut. Fast paced & easy to understand world building. Excited to see more books from this author! I think she has a lot of potential to make an impact in the fantasy genre.

The Sun, the Storm, and The Shadows is a fun Romantasy based on Mayan culture. The biggest flaw in the book is the POVs between the two sisters. Their voices are very similar - and I wish there was a bigger difference in their voices.

Other than that, it is hard to believe this is a debut novel. The prose is well-written. The magic system and the gods are well researched. The male counterparts are perfect for the females. Overall, I would read and reread this book over and over again!

I NEED the next installment.

I devoured this cover to cover. I couldn't put it down. It had everything I love: strong FMC that were relateable, fascinating world that I got lost in, romance, and multiple POV ❤️ I will 100% be reading the next book the moment it comes out!

Update: I just reread the book 6 months later and loved it just as much as the first time. Solid 5 star read for me! 🌟

The set up of this book is so cool!! Mayan inspired fae stuuunning!!! The writing does feel stilted and sometimes awkward - but some of the banter did have me giggling the further I got into the story. I do think the sisters voices blend a little in the beginning but as you learn more about them they do take on their own voices. I have a feeling the second book is going to be epicccc

I haven’t ever read a Mayan inspired fantasy romance before and I’m super happy this was my first one! The characters had different personalities which really made the story super intriguing. The relationship between the sisters was DEEP and you could really feel it as you read on. Also the relationship between the two males tugged at my heart, I’m a sucker for not related by blood but by choice.
I loved how the story moved WITH the characters if that makes sense. The use of mayan culture and background was done really well and I’m intrigued for more more moreeeeeeee!
ALSO Cree is my husband so back off.

A colorful, exciting story set in the heart of Maya that allows you to experience fantasy in a way you never have before. Set in an unapologetically Latin world, the descriptions reminded me of my home, my culture, and my ancestors. I couldn’t put it down, and can’t wait to read whatever comes next!

All I’m gonna say is that if you are into
Forced proximity
fated mates
Mayan Mythology(NOT retelling)
Gods & Fae
BIPOC Main Characters
Multiple POVs
Short chapters
Enemies to lovers
Fast paced

Then this book is for you! I had such a good time reading it! I read it in one sitting and I cannot wait for book 2! I am invested in this story. Camila is my favorite character.. I just understand her on so many levels. LOVE HER!

So, long story short! You have 2 sisters, who don’t remember their past & after stealing from one of the wealthiest men in their village, they’re forced to run away to the “cursed forest” and somehow find themselves in a magical land. So as they explore this land in an empty belly .. they’re caught once again, stealing, but this time stealing from the Princes of the Fae 👀……..

And your story begins.

Thank You to the author for sending me a copy of her debut novel in exchange of a honest review.

This was such a perfect little combo of everything I love to read in a fantasy romance! There was unique Mayan-inspired folklore, magic, mystery, angst, slow-burn yet grand pay-off romance…it was just a beautiful story! Very well written and flowed wonderfully. I loved the different dynamics that were at play here between the two couples. There were so many moments that gave me “kick up my legs and giggle” vibes that were just so stinkin cute and sweet. Not to mention I found them also sexy as hell at the same time. And I really liked how this ended: kind of a soft cliffy, if you will. Enough for me not to throw my kindle/book, but also had me asking questions of the next book. Very refreshing take on a Fae tale and I am very much looking forward to reading the next book when it comes out! Congrats to this author on a fabulous debut novel and I am very eager to read more of her work in the future!

Highly recommend, especially if you are looking for a fresh take on a Fae story and/or are looking to diversify your bookshelf. Enjoy! 🤙🏼💕

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this book!

What’s better than your favorite tropes? MORE OF YOUR FAVORITE TROPES! That’s what you get with this book!

Fated mates AND enemies to lovers? YES PLEASE!

One horse? Well, technically there’s two… but there are 4 people 🤣

Fae powers of light, flame, shadows, and storms? Can I get a “Oh yeah?!”

A beautifully descriptive world inspired by Mayan mythology that I wish I could be a part of? Take me there.

Badass female characters and hunky fae males with tattoos? Sign me up!!

Action from the VERY BEGINNING, that just. doesn’t. stop!

.

.

Our two main female characters are sisters, one year apart, who have the BEST bond. I wish my sister and I were this close 🤣

Our two main male characters… oh boy! I loved them both, but I’m a Cree girly! It’ll be interesting to see who other readers like!

I was so honored to be selected to be a part of Mikayla’s ARC team! I already want to read the next book! Guess I’ll have to read this again.

Only con- I wish it were a longer book. 🤣

I really wanted to love this book. I was so excited about a story with Mayan gods, which I know next to nothing about. The gods were almost an afterthought and not a lot actually happened in this book. It wasn’t an awful book but it also wasn’t remarkable.

Solid 4.25/5. Extremely easy to get into. Book was extremely unique and I can’t believe it’s a debut novel in a series. I absolutely loved the Mayan Gods background and am intrigued to learn more. Only concern was the similar voices at times for the sisters’ POV as well as the fact that the world building was a bit slow for me personally. But honestly, if you’re not a regular fantasy or romantasy reader like myself and you’re curious about the genre, this might be a fun book to start off with.

I loved this book and can't wait for the next one!!!

Mayan mythology, multiple POVs, a little bit of spice, and great characters!

The world building and story telling was fantastic. I picked up this book to help diversify my reading and support an indie author. Mikayla's story features some of my favorite things, badass female characters and magical fae. I would absolutely recommend this book to fantasy lovers who enjoy a bit of spicy in their epic reads.

This is a beautifully written Mayan inspired fantasy romance. I am still new to the fantasy genre and OMG this book ate and left no crumbs!!!

The novel is written in multi person pov….Xio, Mila, Holt and Cree. When I say beautifully written I MEAN IT…

My girl Mikayla didn’t miss with the force proximity, violence, ssslllllllooowwwww burning spice, enemies to lovers, chosen family etc etc etc

Is everything as it seems NOPE!!!!

When I say I was HOOKED from the first chapter I honestly was locked in.

The two female main characters weren’t weak or damsels in distress they were strong, witty, smart and out for revenge page 1.

The ending the way I SCREAMED… I didn’t see that coming I had my theory but ooohhhh was I wrong.

Any chance I got I was deep in because each chapter was such a smooth easy read I just wanted more.

This book has my heart. I absolutely loved reading a book by a Latina Author with so much amazing representation. The story is so beautiful and sucks you in from the very beginning. I loved the world building (I do wish there was a tad more) and the magic system seems so cool. I can't wait to learn more in the next book.

I was about 95% of the way finished and thinking "how the heck is this story going to wrap up or finish in the next 5%" but that cliffhanger was amazing!

At times the POV got a little mixed up in my head because the sisters seemed so similar but that could be just me. I wish we could have seen more of the scenes that happened off page so we could see the relationships grow without it feeling so sudden.

I would like to thank the author for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of her book, in exchange for an honest review.

First things first, WOW. For a debut novel, this book is impressive.

You get caught up in the story really fast, the characters have depth, the world-building is really good.
I definitely saw some similarities with some Zodiac Academy characters (the sisters that could be compared a bit to the Vega twins, Cree who reminded me of a sexy, grumpy dragon that we all love, the story also with those sisters who discover a world they had no idea existed), but it wasn’t intentional (I know it because I asked the author, I was so curious !!), and it really didn’t bother me at all.

We have everything here, Fae, elemental magic, mates, royalty, enemies-to-lovers, one horse…

I am really excited for book two, and I know that I won’t be disappointed.

If you love fantasy romance, you have to give this book a chance, it is worth it, and its author is an amazing person too !

I really enjoyed this book!

Xio and Camilla are two badass sisters, and I enjoyed reading through their journey of finding out who they are, where they come from and more. I loved that each chapter was from a different POV, mostly Xio and Camilla, but later on also Holt and Cree. I loved being able to read from each one of their POVs, as it really helped me as a reader see the connection between the characters as well as piece information together. I do wish we got to see more POV from Holt and Cree though, maybe in the next book..?!

I cannot wait for the next book to come out, that ending was amazing! I do wish the book was a little longer, as I felt some scenes or moments could’ve been talked about longer. I love an enemies to lovers trope, but I wish we got to see more banter between the two. There were a span of a few weeks going by in the beginning as well as the end and it felt a tad rushed. I’m hoping the next book will be a little longer!

Thank you so much to the author, Mikayla, for sending me an eARC of this book. I am so appreciative of the opportunity to read this book before it was published. Although I received this as an eARC, all thoughts are my own.

I loved loved loved this so much. The world building, character building, and plot are absolutely fantastic and I love how the author throws little hints about things in the book that you don't recognize are hints until you reach the very end, and then it's like oh my gosh how did I miss this when I was reading it?? Overall I cannot wait for the next installment in this series.

Xio and Camila woke up in a shack 10 years ago with a bow , a quiver of arrows , a pair of daggers and the memory that they were sisters. They had no memories of their past. They spent the next decade training with their weapons, and surviving together. They planned a heist of a large amount of gold from the Lord of their village. A cruel man, who had Camilla publicly beaten for refusing to bow at his feet when they crossed paths in the village marketplace. Fleeing from the Lord's guards with their weapons and a few essential items, they end up running through a "cursed forest." They discover the forest actually has beautiful plants and a flowing river. They decide to set up camp, and figure out their next steps. Xio did not have time to pack her arrows so it would be a while before she could hunt for food to survive. They come across a campsite with a basket of fruits and nuts on the ground. The campsite is empty so they decide to steal enough food for them to survive. They are caught by two Fae, Holt, The future King of the Storm Palace and his adopted brother, Cree. The princes take Xio and Camila as their prisoners. Xio and Camila must travel with them to The Storm Palace to figure out how two humans were able to get into Maya, The Land of The Fae. The four of them are in for a journey they never expected.

I love the fact that this is a book about fae with an all POC cast. Most of the fae books I've read over the years have had a few sprinkles of a diverse cast, but it's not really evident or acknowledged. This book doesn't have that problem. Elements from non-european cultures are weaved into the world building beautifully.

The pacing is good. There aren't any lulls. The book immediately opens with action and keeps the reader on their toes. The book has plenty of humor mixed in with the more serious moments of the book.

Readers learn everything along with the characters. The book is split between the four protagonists , Xio, Holt, Camila, and Cree.

I liked that we had each protagonist experience when we needed it. Characters are my favorite part of books and I love the way the quick to anger, snarky, sarcastic attitudes of Cree and Camila are balanced out by the calm, optimistic personalities of Xio and Holt.
Camila and Cree are my favorite because their fights are hilarious.

Some tropes you will see are found family, Prophecies, enemies to lovers, fated mates, and the search for one's identity. These may seem predictable, but I enjoyed the journey.

Overall, This book is a 4.5/ 5 for me. I am so excited to have an arc of Volume II: The Secret of The Serpent. It was an excellent read. I'm excited to see what happens next. However, I didn't want to immediately reread because I was obsessed. I know books are five stars if I can't move on without a reread because I can't let the story go, it emotionally wrecked me. I love when both happen.

Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️
World Building: 🌏🌏🌏
Character Development: ✨✨.5

Ok this is a tough one. Overall I give it a 3.75⭐️. There were moments of brilliance and moments of boredom. Sometimes this happens with first books in a series because so much time is setting up what is to come. It’s almost a hallmark for fantasy fiction books when we know there will be multiple books coming. The first book can be slow and tedious. But reading this you know something is lying underneath it all and the characters are just so oblivious to it. Just like the readers, it is kind works too.

I wish there was just more time given to this story. A little more depth. Sometimes chapters seemed like a diary entry or like and info dump. Other chapters were so descriptive that they were just beautiful.

You definitely get the Insta love fated mate trope with one of the couples. But I love the other couple even more because it isn’t like that, they seem more real and relatable in their morally grey selves. But you get both because the story focuses on the two sisters. Which I love.

I really love that the author has created a story that clearly represents diversity without making it a troupe. Well done.

This book is mostly a travel book. Sorta classic fantasy fiction style. Lots of conversations around a campfires, riding horse back, training montages, a little bit of actions scenes too. The spice is kinda minimal. There are a few spicy scenes but they are short and not super descriptive. I wish they had been more to that. The sexual tension between the couples was lacking too but it is there. I hope we get more in the next book.

This book can feel disjointed at times and really put together other times. But with the slap you in the face ending I am definitely looking forward to reading book 2!!

So I want to be 100% honest, and hear me out.

So far this story is great. I love seeing diversity in characters. That is something we almost never get. I’m so happy that indie authors have the ability to tell their very good story’s. There’s nothing wrong with the plot.

There are however, some clear challenges that you can see in putting the story to paper for an indie author who may not have access to an editor, and its taking away from the over all experience for me.

I couldn’t get past some of the issues with sentence structure, like run-on sentences, incomplete sentences or sentences that had a new clause or idea added into them (which should have been a new sentence). Some of the sentences are just clauses but not an actual sentence.

There are grammatical mistakes and misuse of punctuation as well. Another thing I noticed is the same words used in back-to-back sentences instead of rephrasing them. Using synonyms would have really helped break up some of the harsh repetitiveness.

If I had any advice for the author, who I am really looking forward to seeing more work from, it’s: 1) Find a few beta readers who can give their input before publishing 2) read the chapters out load before moving on so you can hear how it sounds and rephrase a few things as needed 3) if you don’t have access to an editor there are some great resources online that you can use.

The story is great, but these issues set a tone for the book from the first chapter and it takes away from its quality, which is such a shame. If I’m honest a lot of these mistakes were really easy to fix if you just Google sentence structure. I’m so sorry. I love it so far and I’m excited to finish it. I wish you the best!!

I loved the character development. We learned little things about the characters throughout the book, it added so much depth and personality to them. We learned that as a child Xio loved butterflies, always was a morning person and always was the more calmer sister. Cmila is the more pessimistic and hot headed she's also grumpy in the morning. All the MCs who aren't romantically involved developed a siblings bond and it was really cute to see the the competitiveness between them. Another moment in the development was with the orphans who were struggling like him.

So this book was very world and character driven. The world was vast and vivid and I had no problem imagining it.

With all that said where the author did great with the world and character she lacked with the plot. It was still very good, don't get me wrong, but we learned who the sisters are pretty early on. A big part of why I wanted to read this book was that the sisters don't know who they are, and a big part of these books is the anticipation for the revelation. We got this revelation at only 30% of the book and we didn't get enough time to sit on the clues and try to figure it out on our own. Besides that we didn't get a fight with real consequences, we got some little skirmishes here and there but it didn't add to the plot only to the characters' personality. The only major contribution to the plot is the revelation about Cree's parents and the prophecy.

Reviews are always hard for me. I have this a review on TikTok because the author so graciously gave the book to me a day early so I wanted to repay her with a TikTok review!

So here goes. Overall the book was very well written and I loved the story line. The descriptions give, the details behind the way things were done or said, the way that she made the sisters. I want more and to leave us the way she did was done in a way I want the second one already.

Now the reason I give this a 4 star and not a 5 star is because I, me myself and I, struggled to read the chapters back and fourth between sisters. They were so similar (yes still different) that it made it difficult for me to keep them separate. Putting that aside though I loved everything else and I am hoping as the next book(s) come out we will see them grow into their own persons and really see them shine as individuals.

I did also mention a page for pronunciations of names would be lovely as I had to look up quite a few names to make sure i was being correct with it. She did let me know there would be a page in the book for release just not for the arc book that I was given on kindle.

I’m very thankful that I got the chance to read this book and I’m so excited and cannot wait to see where this series goes. I do hope that others will enjoy this book and that they will give it a chance!

"To being broken but damn powerful."

"Scars are a map of where we've been, what we've survived."

"Grief was just love without the physical connection, and all that love doesn't disappear."

"Pain is better than sadness. Isn't it?"

Oh my goodness, where to even start?

I simply could not choose one or two quotes to represent the beauty in this book, so I chose four that stuck out and resonated with me the most. I have never in my 26 years read a book like this and I'm so thankful that Mikayla decided to write it.

This book is:

* fast paced

* adventurous

* FUNNY ... like so damn funny

* Heart-warming

* so many other words that I'm not capable of describing thoughtfully enough to put how good this book was into perspective.

I just need everyone to read it. Both the love-interests in this book are so dreamy in different ways. They are so different and it keeps me from being able to determine who was my favorite, it just depended on whose chapter I was reading. The sisters are both very different too and I also loved them equally. The plot and lore were intriguing and the romance only added to it. The tension and pacing were perfect, and I honestly can't think of anything I wish was different. Just pick this book up and do yourself a favor!

I love love love this book. It was a quick read. Very easy to follow, and the multiple points of view was surprisingly enjoyable.

The Mayan inspiration was 10/10. You don’t get POC characters as often, and their depiction in this book was lovely. Picturing the characters in my head was so much fun.

**Spoilers Below**

My reason for not giving 5 stars is because I was not too crazy about Holt & Xiomara. They had everything very easy. Their POVs were kind of average to me. They didn’t really have any conflict, and they just immediately embrace their bond. It’s cool that they found their other half and all, but they didn’t really question the connection. Xio just immediately trusts this 200 year old fae.

Cree and Camila on the other hand were what had me coming back every time. Their POVs alone deserve 5 stars! Crees internal battle on his reservation with Mila had me on the edge of my seat. I can not wait for more on those two.

Other things that I loved about this story are that Xio and Camila are in their mid-twenties. The description of the scenery, clothing, physical appearance of all characters. Everything was very easy to picture.

Over all, this book is great. I can not wait for more.

The Sun, The Storm, & The Shadows by Mikayla D Hornedo is Volume one in Hearts of Maya Series. So this is how the book is described, “This book series is inspired by the Mayan culture, and while the names of the Gods are the same, this is not a direct retelling of any of their stories.” So all love all things about Mythology so any story that I see that even has a hint of this, I immediately have to read. I should also point out this is the first book I’ve read by this author. Now with everything I already mentioned, I absolutely loved this book! I flew through the reading in a day, it was so good and immersive. I loved everything about this, the story, the plot…everything. I mean there’s Gods, Fae, Magic and Romance; what more could you possibly ask for? Adventure… it’s there, twists and turns… absolutely. The characters were strong, fierce, independent and to the point. I was a fan! Not to mention there are multiple POV’s so you get to experience the character’s thoughts as you go. (I really appreciated that) I also really enjoyed the growth as the story progressed… I can’t wait for the next volume or book. I definitely recommend reading!

The Sun, The Storm, & The Shadows is a unique romantasy with Mayan mythology weaved into its pages.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Favorite quote: "I'd bend to your every command, my very soul belongs to you."

Tropes
🖤 Romantasy
🖤 Forced proximity
🖤 Fated mates
🖤 Mayan Mythology
🖤 Gods & Fae
🖤 Diverse characters
🖤 Multiple POVs
🖤 Spicy (1/5)

The story follows two sisters, Xio and Camilla, who live in the human world without any memories of their past. However, one day the sisters escape into the cursed forest and discover an enchanting land called Maya, filled with gods, faes, and magical powers. As a lover of all things myth, I was captivated by this book, particularly its unique and inspired take on Mayan gods. The author's dynamic characters and unique take on Mayan myth made this book a delight to read, even though it ended with a cliffhanger that left me breathless with anticipation.

Overall, this book is a fantastic read, incorporating some of my favorite tropes while providing a fresh take on a magical world inspired by the vibrant Mayan culture. I am excited to see how Xio and Camilla's story unfolds in the next book.

The Sun, The Storm, & The Shadows by Mikayla Hornedo is an adult fantasy that you definitely want to add to your list!

Two sisters with no memory of their young life are forced to steal just to get by. When one of their jobs takes a turn for the worse, they are forced to flee the only home they ever knew. Little do they know there is a magical world just beyond their own.

I knew I was going to love this story from the very first chapter! First of all, the FMCs are adults, and they act like it. They are strong, smart, and witty. They are also fighters and do not back down from anyone, including the two very hot Fae who end up taking them prisoner. I mean, I would've just let them take me...🤣. The banter between them was so damn good!!!!

In this story, you'll find things like muliple pov, magic, Fae, prophecies, quests, action, and a wonderfully diverse cast. You also get so many good tropes (done very well) like "who did this to you", enemies to lovers, fated mates, forced proximity, found family, and newfound powers.

I already can't wait for book two!

“Even the night has the stars.”

This freaking book. From start to finish I devoured every single page. Imagine if Zodiac Academy and Mayan Mythology got together and had a baby, it would result in this book. I loved all the different POVs, the unique powers, the romance, and the found family bonds that this book showcased.

The plot twists during, and at the end of the book, have me absolutely feening for more. I had seen some readers rate this lower because of “insta love”, but I would actually respectfully disagree on that. Both romantic connections felt like a very natural buildup. There was definitely attraction in the beginning, but the couples genuinely got to know each other on a deeper level before there was any mention of love.

For a debut novel, Mikayla knocked this book out of the park. I cannot wait to see what she has in store for us next, and to also see how far she grows!
