When Shelly Powers was 7, she told her mother that she'd marry Elvis Presley when she grew up. She did -- though he was an impersonator, a tribute artist she met in Las Vegas. But over her 12 years living in Vegas, she joined an Elvis fan club. After a few Elvis conventions she met Presley's personal photographer, Ed Bonja, and with him made her first Elvis Interview. March 5, 2024It is unlikely the mystique surrounding Elvis Presley will ever leave us. Although he has been dead for almost fifty years, the adoration for him is still at peak levels, with musical tributes all the time, along with books like this one.
With ELVIS REMEMBERED, the cover notes that the book has “Intimate Interviews From The Elvis International Archives, With The People Who Knew Him Best.” Shelley Powers, has been an Elvis fan for most of her life. The book shows the hero worship continuing, as she interviews people who were part of the King’s life. These were not just casual people, but rather those who held court with him, and got to know him up close and personally.
There are ten interviews in the book, and lest people think this a rehash of Presley’s life, she does manage to get even more interesting facts and figures about Elvis. She talks with Cynthia Pepper, who knew Elvis well, as she was one of the stars of the movie Kissin’ Cousins that Elvis starred in. She discusses many topics with Cynthia, even about Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker. She says he was the opposite of Elvis, never sharing the politeness that Elvis did. She says Elvis was always the gentleman. She also adds he was humble, modest and kind.
Another interesting person in the book is Sonny West, who was bodyguard to Elvis, for sixteen years as a matter of fact. His cousin Red West was also a bodyguard too. Sonny says he would have taken a knife or bullet for Elvis. If someone came at Elvis, he wasn’t going to allow that person to hurt him.
Another interesting person in the book is Jimmy Velvet, who was a vocalist and friend with Elvis for over two decades. He even went on to open an Elvis Memorabilia Museum which was open for nearly twenty years. He too gets into detail about Elvis, and those were around him, giving another perspective to the man and the music.
The book is filled with dozens of photos, many never seen before, making the book very well-rounded and certainly one Elvis Presley fans would enjoy adding to their collection, and referring to often. ELVIS REMEMBERED is definitely a book you won’t forget.
