Man.... I'm disappointed. I was really loving this story until they decided to make it a romance. Right there and then, I felt something was off and I was right. Personally, I don't think I'll be continuing with the story.
See, I rather liked the premise. Yeonjo's entire family died at the hands Hee-ryan and now he becomes his family killer's bedmate in order to exact revenge. Sounded different and exciting. And the 1st half of this 1st season was like this. But then they had to go bungle things up because Yeonjo fell in love with this brute of a man. The way this season has ended... genuinely makes me want to throw up
I read the creator's note and the authors claim that not only will season 2 have 2 parts like this 1st season, but also that in this 2nd season, Hee-ryang will be viciously obsessive + abusive toward Yeonjo committing untold brutalities which he will come to solely regret by the time we reach act 3 (which I'm guessing will be the 3rd and final season)
Y'all, I don't have the stomach for all that. And if I'm being completely honest, I don't want a happy ending for this story. I wish that Yeonjo would exact his revenge - largely because we see that his family really didn't deserve to die. They just died because the grand prince wanted the throne and Yeonjo's father was in his way. They died because Hee-ryan wanted a title and could get it through the grand prince by killing Yeonjo's family
I don't want a happy ending after this. They should've stuck to the revenge plot and let Yeonjo be the dagger behind a smile. He deserved to be a beautiful smart and conniving snake. I weep for the wasted potential
I'm too annoyed to think of a rating atm. Perhaps once I've calmed down I'll think of something appropriate
This was not for me. I'm mostly sad because it has such gorgeous art and the translation is impeccable. I actually quite enjoyed the middle of the season, once the political setting is established and the mains are not constantly at each other's throat. But the ending and the handling of non-con just didn't work for me. This review is therefore not a comment on the work itself, but just on the fact that it was not my favourite. I would however be very happy to give this author/illustrator team another go!
The reason why I like this manhwa is because of the art and the genre. I love historical fiction. Revenge to love tropes, I guess. Yeonjo is so pretty!! Sometimes, I forgot that he is a guy.
I'm not okay, after the first part of this series, I'm really not okay. My mind is overworking and not working at all, my heart is beating fast and not beating at all. I know it sounds bookish or cringe but that how I feel. Both Yeonjon and Hee Ryang are the best couple for each other, even though the story is yet to be further told, but they are my one and only. I wasn't expecting so much dark aspects in this story, not more than Painter Of The Night anyway. Because POTN is the reason I started Steel Under The Silk and I can safely, and dare I say dreadfully, say that it is more dark, sad, gloomy, but also sweet sometimes. I cannot cover most and important aspects of this story in my review but it is worth reading and best experienced personally, that is if you prefer crying like you're choking ( My current state). Now, I'm not continuing the story further, not because I don't want to because I'm desperate for them, but because I'm not the one to torment myself chapter by chapter. I will continue it after the series ends or at least the second part as the authors says.
I love a good revenge story, and it looks like this one might have some merit with Yeonjo as the protagonist. A lot of the time, webcomics lose all sense of conflict soon after the protagonist and their love interest start spending real time together. I have hope this one will be different, since Yeonjo seems to be holding fiercely to his murderous plan and the wrongs inflicted upon him and his family. Definitely interested in how things will turn out!
I can't believe this is from the same author who has written The Housemates (this one is not listed here) --a very layered and progressive manhwa I have read till now..
They(author) also now start to do find solace in typical manhwa storyline with Powerful/Grumpy Top × Pathetic Bottom.😮💨😮💨
Read this cause i was looking for something similar to painter of the night and they are both similar for sure , promising start enemies to lovers, the scar makes him look even cooler
This review is for the S1 mid-point epilogue of the webtoon.
Kwon Hee-ryang (ML) ruthlessly killed Lee Yeonjo’s (ML) father five years ago and since then, he had been toiling away as a slave pretty much. LYJ and KHR have an ill-fated relationship and although LYJ has vowed to avenge his family, KHR has seen through his initial plans and found out his true identity. Now, with nothing left to lose, LYJ is more determined than ever to go through with his revenge, and KHR is well aware what risk he is taking by keeping LYJ close to him.
I think both characters are really interesting, but especially LYJ because he’s strong and has what it takes to see his plans to the end, even at his own detriment. KHR is also highly intelligent and skilled, and it makes me look forward to seeing how LYJ will be able to pull the rug under him. Their push and pull dynamic moves the plot along, but that doesn’t mean the plot is weak. In fact the plot is building momentum at the end of S1 and I believe that more interesting things that will take place in the following seasons.
The art in this is gorgeous as well and I really like how LYJ’s expressions are drawn. Even though he’s pretty, his expressions are also sharp, providing a really nice juxtaposition.
