Cherishing the Cowgirl

Rate this book
Charity Courtney is at her wit’s end trying to save her boardinghouse from a bank foreclosure. Short of money but not short of marriage proposals, she dreads putting aside her fairy tale dreams of love and having to settle for a marriage of convenience. But with the need to provide for her two younger sisters, she doesn’t have any other options.

While visiting Fairplay, wealthy railroad magnet Hudson Vanderwater hears of Charity’s plight. Although he comes across as cold and calloused, he is drawn to helping women in need because of a tragedy that destroyed his sister. He concocts a plan that will save Charity—he’ll employ her and rent her boardinghouse for the month and in doing so alleviate her debt.

With a grumpy and demanding new boarder who is now her boss, Charity determines to hold the handsome Hudson at arm’s length. But she’s the sunshine for his stormy soul, and he can’t resist being drawn to her. As danger closes in and threatens to destroy Charity, he’ll stop at nothing to save her.

Cherishing the Cowgirl was a wonderful and swoony western romance! This is book two in the Colorado Cowgirls series, but can definitely be read as a stand alone novel.

I loved the chemistry between these two characters and the grumpy-sunshine aspect of their relationship. Hudson was a serious businessman who doubted that he would ever allow himself to fall in love. Charity was not exactly a bubbly type of sunshine character, but I felt that she had kind and caring qualities toward her sisters and for the people in their community. This helped her look to others’ needs as greater than her own. She was a bit shy and unsure of herself and definitely did not come from the world of luxury and wealth that Hudson did.

These two had some troubles that threatened the possibility of a relationship between them and I really enjoyed watching as Hudson worked to try to make things right not only between them, but also right some wrongs, as well. This book was so good and I look forward to reading future books in this series!

Courtney Charity is doing all that she can to keep her boardinghouse running and taking care of her two sisters. But there's trouble brewing and she can't seem to figure out where it's coming from. It seems that her only option might be to marry. But that's not quite what she wants to do. She'll keep fighting and searching for a solution to the very end.

Then Hudson Vanderwater shows up. Oh boy is he trouble...for Charity's heart! *smirks* These two are opposites. She's full of light and sunshine and positivity. He's grumpy and smoldering and determined to work hard to make up from something in his past.

When these two find themselves in close proximity all bets are off. Hudson comes to stay at The Courtney Boardinghouse and has all the solutions for the Courtney sisters' problems. Except there might be some roadblocks in the way. Namely three very strong willed sisters.

I loved these two so much! And Charity's sisters and Hudson's valet and friend! Seriously a great cast of characters who all weave together into a great adventure of faith, family, trust and love.

I'm looking forward to the next books in this series (which features the other Courtney sisters-Yay!!!)!

Content: Clean. Some moments of mild peril. Some mild innuendos. Sweet kisses and nothing further.

I received a copy from the author/publisher. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

“The truth was, nothing else in his life mattered but her. Yes, he loved his work, the company, the railroad empire. But none of it had made him truly happy or filled the emptiness inside. But she made him want to live again. Made him see the beauty of life. Made him feel whole.”

This is the second book in the Colorado Cowgirls Series, and I loved it even more than the first one. It’s an opposites attract, grumpy/sunshine romance, with wonderful characters, a beautiful setting, and a clean but very passionate love story. I was hooked from the opening lines and couldn’t stop reading.

Hudson and Charity were very different from each other, but so perfect together. I loved how they saw the other’s strengths and brought out the best in one another.

Highly recommended for anyone who likes clean romance, a bit of a mystery to solve, a light faith element, and excellent storytelling.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Jody Hedlund really knows how to write a romance! Cherishing the Cowgirl is a romance, an adventure, and an exploration of grace all in one lovely story. I was hooked on Hudson and Charity’s story from the first page—I couldn’t put this one down. I’m really excited for Patience and Felicity’s books, releasing in August, so luckily the wait isn’t too long. Definitely add this new series to your TBR! 4.5/5 stars

I don’t know how she does it but Jody Hedlund always has the ability to instantly pull me into a story and this time was no different. I absolutely loved Cherishing the Cowgirl!

Cherishing the Cowgirl is the second book in the Colorado Cowgirls series and it is the story of Charity and Hudson. Charity runs a boarding house and is responsible for taking care of her two younger sisters; Hudson is one of the wealthiest men in the country. When Hudson runs into Charity he is captivated by her right away and when he finds out she is in debt and could lose her boarding house he makes her an offer to rent the entire house for the month and agrees to pay her the exact amount of her debt.

I loved both Charity and Hudson right from the start. Charity is a wonderful heroine. She is strong but also loving and kind, always putting her sisters first and Hudson is strong willed but has a gentle side that Charity brings out. His vulnerable side made him such a well rounded character. The chemistry between these two was amazing in a “wow” kind of way. They both tried to deny their physical attraction to each other which added lots of tension to the story and as time goes on they get to know each other and realize they are perfect for each other. Jody knows how to write romance and definitely pulled out all the stops with this one.

I really enjoyed the scene when Hudson requires Charity to join him for meals as part of his arrangement at the boarding house. He was so gruff here not knowing how to act with her and then his assistant Ronald asked him to be polite. It kind of reminded me of a scene from Beauty and the Beast. I just loved it!

The romance was definitely front and center but the plot was super intriguing with the element of danger and several twists in the story that kept me captivated the whole time. Such a great western that I devoured in just a couple days!

I can’t wait until the next book in this series! This book can be read as a stand alone but after reading the first two I can safely say you will want to read them all! Highly recommend to all historical romance fans.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

1878 Fairplay, Colorado

Continuing to enjoy this spinoff series! In Cherishing the Cowgirl, the primary focus is on Charity, the eldest of the Courtney Sisters. She feels responsible for taking care of her uncle's debt. Is marriage to a local banker the answer?

I love Charity's strength, commitment to family and integrity. She wants to earn the money honestly. Operating a boarding house for women is helpful, but not enough to pay for the overdue loan payment.

A bit of a the movie Pretty Woman feel to this novel. I look forward to the next in the series which will focus on the other two Courtney sisters.

My gratitude to the author for a complimentary e-copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Ok. Do I really have to write a review for this book??? I mean, the main character's name is Charity! I automatically love it!

Fine. I'll write. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, it doesn't matter what Jody Hedlund's writing; I'm in the midst of the action no matter what era or location her story's taking place in. I have no idea how she does it, but she does. Every. Single. Time.

And. Name notwithstanding, Charity may really and truly be my favorite character in all of Jody's Colorado Cowboys/Cowgirls books. She's headstrong, firm in her convictions, always looking out for her sisters, yet kind, loving, and genuine. Her head isn't turned by money, but by someone's heart. She's brutally honest, she's "simple and uncomplicated (to quote Hudson's thoughts)", and I love her.

I also really like Hudson. He's firm, strong willed, a lion, really. But of course has that soft spot for the woman he loves.

This one might be my favorite Colorado book that Jody's written.

This book is definitely swoon worthy! It departs from the McQuaid's, who we have grown to love, and instead focuses on Charity. Charity is the eldest sister who owns the boardinghouse from the first book. Hudson isn't the most likeable character as he is extremely pompous but the reader grows to care for him throughout the book. I'm looking forward to seeing which cowgirl is highlighted in the next book!!

Thanks so much to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.

Cherishing The Cowgirl is book two in Jody Hedlund's Colorado Cowgirl series. The series returns readers to Fairplay Colorado and has guest appearances by characters from Her Colorado Cowboys series. I really enjoy series that can be read as standalone, but contain ties to each other.

Charity Courtney may be poor, but she is very strong and determined to provide a life for herself and her sisters, to the point of considering a marriage of convenience. Hudson Vanderwater wants to right a wrong from his past. I loved the dance as they tried not to fall in love.

I liked this book but would caution that there is a bit more sizzle in this series than some of Jody's previous books. It is still a clean book.

So brew a pot of coffee and settle in for a sweet read.

I was given a copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts are my own.

Are you ready for a story that captures your heart and stirs your imagination? Who else but Jody Hedlund could pair a young woman raised by Quaker parents with a sophisticated businessman from Baltimore and give them a romance that is both sigh-laden and swoon-worthy? Charity Courtney's initial introduction to Hudson Boylston Vanderwater III involves her rescuing him from an angry moose and this laugh-out-loud moment helps lighten an adventure that's filled with murder, kidnapping, robbery, and downright devious villains! This moose rescue also sets the stage for an amazing attraction that's just begging to be explored!

Cherishing the Cowgirl is an exciting Western story that features intriguing characters, a tantalizing romance, and a nod to the poor girl/rich man scenario. It's also a captivating introduction to Charity's two sisters, Patience and Felicity, who are set to be the next two Colorado Cowgirls. So, grab a copy of Cherishing the Cowgirl, settle back in your favorite reading spot, and prepare to be swept away. This book is a perfect addition to summer reading lists, and I especially recommend it to all who enjoy historical Western romance.

I received an early digital copy from the author. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

I have had the opportunity to read some fantastic books. Today I share the second book in a series Cherishing the Cowgirl by Jody Hedlund.
Let’s saddle up our horses again and travel back in time to Fairplay, Colorado in 1878, for another adventure. Cherishing the Cowgirl by Jody Hedlund is the second book of this series.
The second book raised the bar of writing higher not lower. It had very relatable and mostly likable characters. Her likable characters included Charity, Patience, and Felicity Courtney, the sisters introduced in the previous novel, who now found themselves struggling to keep their inherited ranch and home. Also, It introduced Hudson Boylston Vanderwater III, the railroad surveyor; Tripp, the nephew of Mr. Fogelberg, the banker who pines for Charity, and Ronald, Hudson’s trusted friend.
At the start of this novel, Hudson Vanderwater is running for his life as a bull moose chases him. Will he survive long enough to meet Charity Courney, the cowgirl who rides her ranchlands and tends to the needs of her sisters and the boarders?
This book kept me entertained with a few twists and turns of the plot. Therefore, I give it 5 stars.
Disclaimer: I was given an Advanced Reder Copy of this book. I am sharing an honest review of this book.

Oh my goodness I just didn’t think Jody Hedlund Books could get any better..But this one hit me in all the right ways. Who would think you could have a sweet, cute meet with a charging cow moose. I loved getting to know the Courtney sisters. Raised as Quakers in Pennsylvania, they are now in the rugged frontier of Colorado trying to make a living for themselves. Charity is honest, sweet, and a protector of her sisters. Then along comes Hudson Vanderwater, be still my heart! He is stubborn, determined and yes, a bit arrogant. But from the exquisite description, he sounds swoon worthy handsome. I love the plot of the story where he comes in to town to get what he wants, but finds so much more. There’s drama, adventure, villains, and heart melting romance. Although there are sizzling kisses, this is a clean romance. It is the second book of the series, but can be read as a standalone. I would recommend reading all of Jody’s books. I haven’t read one I didn’t love.

Charity and her sisters run a guest house that they inherited from their Uncle.  Money was tight and Charity was afraid of losing their home.  She had to find a way to raise $500 by the end of the month.

She then meets Hudson.  He feels the need to rescue Charity.  She is stubborn and is not ready to accept any help from him.

The book was a quick and enjoyable read.  You can't help liking Charity.  Like her name, she gives so much of herself to others.  Hudson has a difficult time showing his emotions.  He is more comfortable expressing his feelings with monetary means.  So very opposite of each other but their attraction to each other is strong!

This is Book 2 of the Colorado Cowgirl Series. I love the cover of this book.  Charity is just as beautiful inside as out.

I received this book from the author to review.

Cherishing the cowgirl

Charity needs to save her boardinghouse from foreclosure, which is also her home. Hudson comes to town and stays at the boardinghouse. All kinds of rumors get started about the boardinghouse. I enjoyed Charity and Hudson’s story. Hudson was such a fun character. I loved how Hudson wanted to help Charity.

This is the 2nd in the series. So much different from the first book. I am looking forward to reading more of the series.

I received an advanced copy of the book from the author. This book review is my own opinion.

Sparks fly in this forced-proximity, grumpy-sunshine Western romance full of adventure!

Charity Courtney reluctantly accepts Hudson Vanderwater's offer of help to save the place that she and her sisters call home. Charity is the oldest of the sisters and as such shoulders much of the responsibility for keeping a roof over their heads, but when the bank threatens to foreclose on their boarding house she finds she has no other choice. I admired her bravery in trying new things, and standing up in the face of rumors.

This was a fun romantic read, with great romantic chemistry between Hudson and Charity. Though I think that my favorite character had to be Ronald. Ronald was an intuitive man, he always had Hudson's back, but also didn't shy away from telling him like it was.

Overall, story and loved the fast moving plot, and adventure mixed with the romance. Highly enjoyable! It was fun getting to know the Courtney Sisters better, and I can't wait to see what is in store for Felicity and Patience!

I really enjoyed Cherishing the Cowgirl. It was a fresh, new story in a familiar location, with characters who kept me riveted.
I also was getting Beauty & the Beast vibes, without following the actual B&tB formula. And I love me some Beauty & the Beast.

Jody had her usual steamy yet clean romance, and I wasn’t quite sure how the story would actually play out.

I also enjoyed seeing some of the characters from the Colorado Cowboys series, though none were main players.

I am looking forward to books 3 & 4 of this series!

She's done it again! Jody Hedlund brings us back to Fairplay, Colorado, in another sweet and swoony book. She really does have a way of pulling readers in from the very first sentence and keeping us glued to the page as the story unfolds! As always, her characters are top-notch, there's just enough mystery to keep things exciting, and there's a good dash of sizzling (closed-door) romance.

Cherishing the Cowgirl is the second book in the Colorado Cowgirls series and is the first to take us away from the McQuaids. Charity Courtney has been shouldering the responsibility of supporting her younger sisters and running a boardinghouse since the death of their parents several years before. But the bank is breathing down her back, it looks like she'll never be able to pay back the loan she inherited from her uncle, and she and her sisters will soon be left without an income--or a roof over their heads. Enter Hudson Vanderwater: a wealthy railroad tycoon who seems to have it all. He is immediately drawn to the boardinghouse owner and starts looking for a way to help her save her livelihood. Charity is determined to keep her new "boss" at a professional distance, but it's turning out to be harder than she thought. And a marriage of convenience just might be the only way to save her boardinghouse.

I loved Charity's character from the beginning. She's strong, capable, and has a sweet sunny personality. Hudson took a bit to grow on me, but he was a fantastic character by the end; he just needed someone to polish the rough edges and bring out the good heart underneath. I also really liked his assistant, Ronald. He was a great little wingman and helped both Charity and Hudson in many ways. Charity's bond with her sisters was a fun addition, and I'm eagerly looking forward to reading their stories when they release in August! As always, I appreciated the strong faith element Hedlund weaves throughout her books. I loved every moment of this story, and I cannot wait to see where Hedlund takes this series!

If you enjoy historical fiction, you won't want to miss this book! While Cherishing The Cowgirl could easily be read as a standalone, I'd strongly recommend reading the Colorado Cowboys as well as the first book of the Colorado Cowgirls series before starting this one if possible. Not because it's completely necessary for the plot, but because I really do think you'll love them.

Cherishing the Cowgirl by Jody Hedlund is the second book in the Colorado Cowgirl series. Charity has been introduced previously as a good friend to Astrid. This is the first book to depart from the McQuaids and it was still great! Charity helps run the boardinghouse with her sisters. She is oldest, and of course, the most responsible, levelheaded of the bunch. She doesn’t do things spontaneously and she doesn’t lose herself. Until she meets Hudson. I did not love Hudson at first, but that was kind of the intent. Hudson has some growing to do. Charity sees through to the real him, despite all the fronts and airs he has put on. Charity is in a position of needing a miracle. Hudson is in a position to provide said miracle. Despite their pride and determination to prove themselves, they find they are better together than apart. I love the chemistry between these two and as always in a Hedlund story, the romance is amazing (curls your toes while remaining sweet).

Talk about some sizzle!
In this book, we get to know Charity (she made an appearance in book #1) and Hudson. *Cue the swoon*
Hudson is city, money, ambition, and strength.
Charity is sweet, dedicated, and modest.
Made for each other. ❤️

It’s a l-o-v-e-l-y adventure. I’m so glad I got to pre-read!

Also, cameo from Dylan McQuaid!

Cherishing the Cowgirl is book two in Jody Hedlund’s Colorado Cowgirls series, and is another fiery, western-based romance. I was looking forward to reading the Courtney sisters’ stories, and I was so excited when Charity’s was first. I love how determined they are to make it in such a rough country while still maintaining the values they were taught through their faith. Charity’s gentleness and unconditional compassion toward others are incredibly endearing, and made me cheer for her the entire story.
Hudson is the grumpy to Charity’s sunshine, and his arrogance and selfishness can strike a nerve (and a pang of anger or two) in different parts of the story. I didn’t particularly like how he treated Charity on several occasions. So, it took me some time to warm up to Hudson. However, I loved his assistant Ronald, and how he was willing to withstand Hudson’s wrath to try and mold him into a better man. But don’t worry! Hudson will work his way into your heart as Charity chisels her way into his.
Overall, I enjoyed watching Charity bloom under Hudson’s attention and Hudson soften with her compassionate and kind influence. The added mystery, scandal, and danger made Charity and Hudson’s story an adventurous western romance!

I was given a copy of this book by the author with no expectations of positive reviews. All opinions are my own.

it was fun to be back in FairPlay, Colorado to see what the sisters at the boarding house were up to.
Charity seems to be in charge and struggles to make ends meet as she has an inherited debt hanging over her head. Enter arrogant Hudson Boyston Vanderwater III, who almost always gets what he wants. He is sympathetic to the troubles Charity and her sisters have, but Charity is not willing to accept any assistance. She prefers to handle it herself. She thinks Hudson only wants part of her land to further his railroad venture.
Two stubborn people clash in a war of wits. Sparks fly when Hudson, in an attempt to appease her independent spirit, hires Charity to accompany him to a charity event.
This was an interesting plot that was a little cooler on the sizzle scale than book one, but that suited me just fine. A very enjoyable story with two memorable characters.

DNF on page 122

I’ve decided not to finish this because I’m bored. I don’t like either of the characters; they’re very dull. They don’t really have any personality other than they have the hots for each other, which is also another reason I’m not finishing because it makes me feel very uncomfortable. 😳

This also seems to be the only plot of the book. They’ve barely met each other, but the other one just gives them such feelings that they don’t know what to do about it and several times he would have to leave which also felt very weird to me especially since it was his pov. I know guys are gross but I don’t want to be reminded of that in a book ok😅😳

Where I stopped, he had taken her to Denver to attend a ball with him. They were staying in different rooms, but the way it was going, with him being SUPER rich and her being in her regular homespun plain clothes, it almost felt like it would be misconstrued by other people that she was his kept woman. And honestly if I didn’t know better I would have thought that while reading it; especially with the way they think about each other. I kept having to remind myself that this is CHRISTIAN FICTION! But it didn’t feel like it. 😳🙊

I’m not one to normally complain about physical attraction in a book. It usually doesn’t bother me. But when that’s the only thing that’s happening in the book, and there’s no other plot or anything else going on… I think this could have been cute if they weren’t so hot for each other. But it felt more like lust than love or even like. And it was instalove too which is aggravating. I won’t finish this series, but I will keep reading Jody’s books. Her Bethany House books are usually better than these independently published ones. And I like her medieval stuff too. But not this series.

Cherishing the Cowgirl starts off with an enemies-to-lovers attraction that hooks you in and leads to a story of romance, mystery, and danger. Charity is trying to run a boardinghouse with her sisters, but the debt she inherited from her uncle means losing their home is a very real possibility. Hudson is an extremely wealthy businessman working to set up his railroad interests in Colorado. Charity is kind, truthful, and determined to help her family keep their home whatever it takes. Hudson is entitled, high-handed, and goes after what he wants regardless of the circumstances. He is also guarding a pain from the past. Charity’s compassion and kindness eases this ache and brings out his generous and protective nature. The attraction flies between the two of them with heady interactions that all but spark off the page. This book adds another layer to the time period that we haven’t yet seen in these series, taking a step into the rich and opulent side of life. This was a fun and unique addition that set this story apart. Add to that the mysterious blasting on Charity’s land and the shady dealings of her uncle’s former business partner, and you have mysteries to solve as you get swept away by the romance. The ending was dramatic and exciting bringing the book to an epic conclusion. The high stakes nature of the final pages elevated the entire novel, making your heart race to see what happens next. The last pages turned into a sweet happily ever after that made you rejoice for Charity and Hudson. For the joy that they found, for the healing that they needed, and for the safety they found in each other’s arms. The change in situation for the Courtney sisters also sets up the other sisters to have intriguing adventures of their own in the books to come. With fiery romance, villains to uncover, and a breathtaking setting, Cherishing the Cowgirl checks all the boxes of an outstanding and entertaining read. I received a complimentary advanced reader copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Getting to read Charity’s story was great because we got to know her a bit in book one, Committing to the Cowgirl. She played a big part in that story.

Hudson was a bit of a novelty in these Colorado series’s because he is a rich guy who seems way out of his element in this small town. I liked him very much despite his gruffness. Ronald, his “right hand man” was a character that I really enjoyed. He always knows what’s best for Hudson and guides him that direction when possible.

I’m ready to read book three and continue with these amazing characters.

Another fast paced fun read in the Colorado Cowgirls series. A bit of a frenemy to lovers feel. I love Charity's determined attitude and how it wars with Hudson's take charge one. Sparks fly and land right in each one's heart. And poor charity... her innocent words are misconstrued and she causes herself to be the center of scandal and Gossip. Love seeing how God works all things together for good!
