My life in Valentine, Nebraska, wasn’t easy. At just nineteen, I found myself homeless and jobless with no prospects on the horizon. A life of abuse crushed people, but I still had space in my heart for love. With the support and guidance of an elderly widower, my life finally began to turn around.
Being young and gay in a small town brought challenges but I had goals for my life, one of which was to be loved. The arrival of a world famous author to our small community turned my world upside down. What did I have to offer a man like Davis? I have nothing but my heart. I hope it’s enough.
DAVIS HILL
After the end of my five-year relationship in Malibu, I was desperate for change. Even though my career was successful, I could still use an infusion of ideas for my next book. So I did the unthinkable and decided to randomly stick a pin in a map and relocate. My friends may have labeled me insane, but I couldn’t resist the temptation. A fresh start in a new town offered the chance to distract myself while I heal from the pain of a failed relationship.
Coming to the rescue of Tim on the very first day we met, was the beginning of one story I hadn’t expected. I had relocated to find a great story, but hadn’t expected to discover my own love story. Could a small town in the middle of nowhere offer a new beginning for both my heart and my career? Little did I know that small towns could have dark secrets that could threaten to shatter my heart.

"He was half my age and worth twice as much. I didn’t just want Tim, I needed Tim, and those two words were entirely different."
Rescue Me, Daddy was a sweet and interesting small town romance with a bit of a dark mystery woven into it.
We have Tim (19), who is kicked out by his stepfather after years of abuse and finds refuge with an old neighbour who runs a shop. Carl steps in as a parental figure to Tim, giving him a home, a job, and a safe space to be able to recover and grow. Davis (38) is a best-selling author who uprooted himself from California to Valentine, a small town in Nebraska, after needing a change to help him with his writing and escape his failed relationship. When Davis meets Tim, there's an attraction between the two, but with a large age gap and Timmy being very innocent and naive, they try to navigate their relationship on top of dealing with a sinister secret in the town.
I enjoyed this story. I love Daddy/Boy relationships, age gaps, small town romances, and virgin MCs, so this ticked off a lot of boxes for me. Despite having such a rough start to life, I adored how Timmy has a very bright and straightforward personality. He carries with him some insecurities, but as he gets comfortable with his relationship with Davis, he also stands up for himself. He's been hurt countless times in the past, so he's initially afraid of holding on to hope that their relationship could be long-term. There's a huge age and wealth gap and they come from different worlds so his fears are totally valid.
I found Davis and Tim's relationship to be sweet. I loved how caring Davis was towards Timmy. He never overstepped any boundaries, even if it was for Timmy's own protection. He gave him the space he asked for and trusted him. I loved the care he took when it came to sex with Timmy. He knew he was inexperienced and took care of him making sure he was ready.
"I’m certain he saw fear and love. I trusted this man with everything I had and I wanted to serve him, to belong to him, and to be protected by him."
I also really liked how Carl was open-minded and not a bigot despite being a senior man living in a red state and small town. While I know these smaller towns tend to have more closed-minded people, seeing such a caring and sweet older man who wanted to protect the young man he took in was lovely. Carl has lost his son and wife but takes care of Tim like his own family.
I am not American, but I know there are many different types of accents in the States, so I found it very interesting to see that portrayed in this story. Timmy's word choices sometimes seemed odd to me, but I am assuming it was due to a combination of the accent of the region and his naivety.
I had one issue with the story….the pacing.
The relationship between Davis and Tim starts slowly at the beginning, like a slow burn, but there's an instant flip and then adding the Daddy/Boy kink elements. It was a bit jarring since both had zero experience with Daddy kink. However, Davis has always wanted to take care of his lovers in that way but is exploring this kink for the first time with Timmy. There is a mystery plot line regarding a dark secret within the town. I felt like it was rushed a bit and wrapped up too fast. I passed the 75% mark while still wondering about the mystery plot's climax.
Overall I really enjoyed Rescue Me, Daddy. It had many elements I enjoy in MM romance. Michael Robert is a new to me author and I will be keeping an eye out for his future works.
I vent about books here but it’s not often I’ll tell ya’ll to straight up stay away from a book due to its content. And I love age gap and daddy kink. As long as it’s done well. If it isn’t, it can dip into squick.
New to me author. The first half was fairly solid and intriguing…
Picture this: a 19 year old boy weeks out of 14 years of daily physical torture and abuse by a step dad. He knows nothing about relationships, sex, how sex works, and definitely has no concept of kinks. A guy 18 years his senior becomes infatuated and repeatedly talks about how young he is, how innocent he is, how small he is, how young his body is. Then their first sexual encounter is just randomly aggressive daddy kink with a face smacking blowjob then the next morning, the older MC says:
“I saw a clean slate in front of me and I selfishly took it. I had guilt in the morning for sure, but I also had an excitement brewing inside of me that was begging for me to grab hold of him and *teach him everything I needed*.”
That clean slate being an innocent and traumatized 19 year old who knows nothing about sex and kinks. I don’t care that he’s technically an adult. That’s called grooming. The language in this rates a 100 on the squick-o-meter. 😖😖😖😖
Plus, the boy was sexually assaulted one time on page and two attempted sexual assaults on page.
The whodunit mystery was horrifying and I just… god this book made me ill.
It’s not very often I find a book or author that gives me nightmares due to their writing, but I’m not gonna sleep for days. And this isn’t in a “dark books are fun” way. This is in a “imma lock up my kids for their safety” way.
first of all, pleas read the trigger warnings!!! Because this was such a intense ride, i had to take several breaks to calm myself down. I actually could talk about this book for hours but I don’t really wanna spoil so I‘ll make it short! This book was a emotional rollercoster and it had me in chokehold until the very end. I was screaming, crying and smashing my phone on the table. This story and the characters were so incredible well written. Tim, my innocent boy😭 he was going through so so much and I felt the pain he felt aaaa i wish I could have protected him but I didn’t had to, because Davis was there for him. He was so good to and for him. I loved Davis and Tim’s dynamic, in and outside the bedroom, so much. Their relationship was at the beginning slow burn, but it made an intense flip at some point and brought the Daddy/Boy kink with it. I also loved how protective and caring Davis towards Tim was, he also never overstepped any boundaries . They both really found each other and I’m so glad they did! If i could I would give this book 10 ⭐️ because i didn’t expected it to be this phenomenal!!! If you can read Daddy/Boy and the listed TW, you definitely have to read this book!
Tropes: 🖤Age gap 🖤Daddy/Boy 🖤Hurt/Comfort 🖤Intense 🖤Small town 🖤Steamy
My lovely pure and innocent Timmy, it broke my heart at the way he was treated as a young boy, being brought up with an abusive step parent but still being such a lovely tender hearted young man just blew me away. He captivated people but most did not have good intentions towards him, he was so naive to everyday life, but he thankfully found a great supporter in his neighbour Carl who took him in when he had nothing and provided him with the love he so desperately needed from a father figure.
Davis was a writer, his books were a big hit in Malibu, his love life on the other hand not so much. When he decides enough is enough and needs a change, he up and moves to Valentine to hopefully get ideas for a new book and start fresh, he did not expect to find a young man who set off his instinct and need to protect button, there was something about Timmy that put his protectiveness on high alert.
If you can read Daddy/Boy and the trigger warnings then this book is a must read. My review and any others you read about this book will not do it justice, it has to be read. There is so much in this book but I can’t tell you because it will spoil it for you, but when I say it had me in a chokehold, on the edge of my sofa with my heart racing, shouting at my phone it’s the truth. This book started as a slow burn but it’s laying the foundations of this story, but trust me foundations are not always built strong and the cracks will bring it all crashing down.

Firstly, I should perhaps say that I can kind of understand how certain readers like this book. But I can say with absolute certainty that I didn't like this book one bit.
Not only was the plot totally not my thing, but this one had to include themes of sexual harassment and some form of sex trafficking on page - and don't even get me started on the absolutely rubbish characters (except for maybe Tim and Carl I can’t say I liked anyone). The daddy/boy relationship was bad too. It came out of nowhere (plot wise of course, I knew it would be part of the book; the title kinda pointed that out) and it wasn’t a good representation of the kink either. My goodness, there was so much wrong with this plot!
And the so-called happy ending was a joke. How the hell can you end this story with these themes in one and a half sentences? The epilogue didn't help anyone. The ending sucked.
——— I feel a little bad about my review, but man oh man, nothing about this story worked for me.
The story starts heavy, nineteen-year-old Tim ends up at his neighbor's doorstep, in the freezing cold, in his pajama, he’s thrown out by his abusive stepfather. Tim is an innocent soul, even with what he’s been through, he’s kind, innocent, and sweet.
“I’m clumsy is all,”
Mr. Carl Hanks, the neighbor, what a personality, such a kind, and caring soul, I loved him dearly. The world needs people like Mr. Hanks.
Davis is a thirty-eight-year-old author, his relationship of five years is on the rocks. He decides to move away, start something new, and maybe get inspired by new environments. Valentine, Nebraska is the place to be.
-Nebraska in February. That was a good idea. Said no human ever.
Meeting Tim did something to Davis. He understands Tim is innocent on all fronts. Very tentatively they start something. A sweet and sexy Daddy boy dynamic grows. Davis is a wonderful Daddy and a caring teacher, and everything is at Tim’s pace.
There are some events I won’t spoil, but it was something disturbing.
Tim and Davis are so meltingly sweet with each other, it was a joy for the eye. Altering back and forth in time revealed clearly what Tim (and Davis) had been through. An amazingly well-flowing story, super captivating, intriguing, widely developed, all attractively written.
I feel like I’ve just been run over by a truck, then wrapped in a soft, lavender scented comforter and then thrown off a plane sans parachute!
And I feel amazing! My heart is going 100 miles/hour! 😰
What a rush to read Rescue Me Daddy. I’m all over the place. I’m still digesting and I’m having trouble remembering my name so please bear with me 🫣😳
Here are things which stood out:
💚 Michael Robert is a really great suspense creator! I was sitting at the edge of my seat for most of this book. 💚 The intensity level was through the roof - this was a buddy read and I’m so HAPPY that it was, because I needed someone to hold my hand. @bookworm.247_ and I have been blowing each other’s DM up all day. Below is a semi-authentic transcript:
Amy: OMG, which chapter are you at? Me: 24. Why? Amy: Buckle up, babe! Me: Oh no, what do you mean? Is it Timmy?! Please don’t tell me it’s Timmy?! Amy: Okay, so that was creepy….. Me: I know but did you notice what he said? Amy: Yes, but that would mean that…. Right?! Me: I know. I can’t… I need to be freaking rescued… I need a Daddy! Amy: It’s gonna be okay…. I hope!
💚 The Steam was sublime. I loved the daddy/boy stuff. It ticked off all my boxes. This was full on role-play and it was ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 💚 The plot was really well-created and excellent execution with little bread crumbs being dropped bit by bit 💚 Great balance between romance and suspense with well-developed characters. Timmy was such a complex young man, Davis was the daddy with a BIG…. No, That’s not what I was going to say…. Protective heart! 💗 Jesus, you guys! And Carl! You’re a f🤬cking hero - please adopt me!
So, here we go: Plot: 💚💚💚💚💚 Steam: ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 Swoon: 🫠🫠🫠🫠 Angst: 😰😰😰😰
Bonus points: I’m still not quite sure what I just read which is kinda cool. It was a great feeling to be thrown out in the deep end. 💚💚
Note to myself: I’m NEVER going to Valentine! And I want a daddy like Davis, a father like Carl and if my son grows up to be like Tim, I’ll be a proud momma 🤭😉
*I rcvd an ARC from the author and this is my honest review
RESCUE ME, DADDY is a standalone book about an author who wants to start afresh, so he sticks a pin in a map and ends up in Valentine, Nebraska. Not long after he arrives, he rescues Tim from his abusive dad and the attraction is instant on both sides. Small-town life may be different to the big city but everywhere has a dark side.
This was a great story with an MC who takes innocence and naivety to the next level! Davis, I really liked, although I thought he was WAY too lenient with Grant, especially after everything he'd done. Tim, at times, was too immature and naive for me to quite believe. And Shotzie, for all her worldliness, was still only nineteen as well, so her reaction to the video was understandable. I guess communication is a skill you learn as you get older! 😆
The biggest issue for me was how quick the ending seemed. It had been built up all the way through the book and BOOM! A couple of pages and it's all over. I don't know, it just seemed a little rushed considering the build-up.
On the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is the first by this author I have read and, hopefully, won't be the last. Definitely recommended by me. ** same worded review will appear elsewhere **
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. * Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!
Rescue Me, Daddy was an interesting read, it was very easy to get invested in Tim and his situation, considering his past and that there were some suspense elements to the story that grabbed my attention. However, it was also a story that left me feeling a bit conflicted and uncomfortable. There are several elements in the story that might be triggering, Tim was sexually assaulted by different people through the story and the suspense plot turned out to be quite dark. If you have triggers, be careful because the list of CW/TWs in the book isn't complete.
Tim was utterly innocent and adorable, definitely a character that it was easy to be drawn to with his past. I really liked to see how he changed over the story, he had the support and safety to start living and thriving. Tim's rescuer and neighbour Carl was the most wholesome character and I really loved how he supported and took care of him, their relationship was so sweet and loving. I had a little harder time with Davis, even if he was great with Tim and respected his boundaries and pace, their relationship and some of the thoughts Davis had came off as predatory to me. I usually love age gaps, but together with the significant difference in experience as well, some thing just didn't work for me.
The pacing was a little off at times, both when it came to the relationship and the suspense plot. The relationship between Davis and Tim started off slow and sweet, which I liked since Tim was inexperienced, but after a while there was just this sudden change of pace and Daddy kink was brought up out of nowhere. I just found it odd since Tim was clueless and innocent about basically everything else relating to relationships and sex, but knew about that? it just didn't add up for me. When it came to the suspense plot, it felt very rushed at the end and I felt like it wrapped up a bit too fast, and then there was a big time jump for the epilogue.
I loved parts of the story - especially the interaction between Tim and Carl, the sweet and slow romance between David and Tim in the beginning and how Tim got to learn about his own potential and self worth. It was a read that was easy to get into and I wanted to see everything work out for Tim, but sadly there were some elements that just didn't work for me.
This book absolutely stole my heart and consumed my entire night, as I just couldn't put it down. What starts off as an innocent albeit dramatic story transformed into a much darker tale of abuse and small town villains raking havoc and ruining lives completely unchecked. Davis is trying to start over, rolling the dice on the small town of Valentine, where he hopes to get back into the writing groove, but what starts as a impromptu adventure, is the beginning of the most spectacular story of his career🖤 Meeting Tim, his youth, his appearance, and essentially everything about the young man is the ultimate fantasy for Davis. But once he witnesses the way other men treat him, ruthlessly sexualising him and relentlessly pursuing him, he gives himself the nessecery reality check. Tim is no fantasy. He isn't just an object to be desired. The story of Tim and Davis is the bright beacon of hope and perseverance. Those two beautiful souls came together in the most tender of ways.🖤 Tim is this sweet character, although young he is truly destined to be the MC in Davis's love life and it takes a while for the writer to come to terms that the power dynamic between them could have multiple layers and ensuring their equal footing in the relationship, rather than threatening his need to care for Tim with the best of his ability. 🖤 When these two finally come together, it is one of the most romantic yet deviant and explosive scenes written by Michael Robert. Fantasy clashes with reality, purity with carnal desire, and tenderness with eager, inexperienced passion. 🖤 The sinister plot developing on the background of their relationship takes a dark turn, testing the strength of their connection and faith Tim has in Davis to always protect him. Oh my god, those last scenes broke my heart and made it whole again in the span of a dozen pages. The cast of supporting characters was exceptional. I absolutely loved Carl and Shorzie. I must give it up to Michael Robert, I absolutely love your supporting ladies - the women in your book are nothing short of exceptional.
Huge huge fan of this author and his writing style. This was a sweet and hot - small town - daddy romance.
Tim and Davis couldn't be more different from each other. Tim is an innocent young man that comes with his own emotional baggage, there is a lot of abuse in his past and reading this part of him definitely wasn't easy. He lives in a small town so him escaping his hell of a life isn't the easiest thing but thankfully there were some decent people who stepped up and helped him 💖
Davis was so easy to fall for. He was driven, confident and charming. I'm sure him coming all the way from California to this small town wasn't the easiest thing but he seemed to do quite alright. Or was it him escaping California? Because yes.. he has has his own "baggage". Anyway. He immediately is interested in Tim and becomes emotionally attached. It was kinda insta-love I think?
Seriously. These two had the best chemistry and seemed to be the perfect match for each other. Yeah there were some difficulties but their love was strong so I knew they would survive anything.
All Davis wanted was to protect Tim and all Tim wanted was to surrender to someone that made him feel loved and trust him that he will be there for him. So everything between them worked. The daddy part included 👀🔥
Slow, but sure their relationship gets stronger and it grows into something beautiful and amazing. They open up to each other and allow their feelings to emerge from hidden places in their heart and soul.
I was a little bit scared going in this book because i know that this author's stories are really heavy on the emotions but honestly I feel like I had no reason to be "afraid". This was well balanced.
I really enjoyed having a front row seat to watch these two fall for each other. Purely, wholeheartedly, consuming. Love, love, love.
Rescue Me, Daddy was an entertaining book. Tim has been sheltered and abused by his step father. He grew up being physically abused and punished by food withholding or being made to sleep outside (no matter the weather).
His neighbor finally has enough one day when Tim (19 years old) came over in the freezing cold wearing only his pjs and sporting some bruises and has him move in. He also has him start working for him at his hardware store. This coincides with Davis , recently single after a 5 year relationship, moving to town.
There’s a mutual attraction but it starts off slow. Tim is innocent and inexperienced but he is vocal and a big proponent of speaking. There’s age gap and daddy kink in the bedroom and the argument between them was totally understandable in my eyes, although Davis should have tried a bit harder to bridge that gap.
The secrets of the town were a revelation but the plot points were placed early on so you knew something shady was happening and you could kind of guess it. They only mentioned what happened to two of the players involved and I’m curious about the rest though!
No review DNF at 39%. This isn’t a bad book per se but it is a little creepy? Davis is 37 and Tim is 19. The age gap is not the issue with this for me it is more about how Davis thinks of Tim in his i wee musings. He constantly remarks in his mind how feminine yet boyish Tim is. And there was a scene where he was having dinner with somebody else, and he said it was just “two masculine men” eating a meal. The paragraph that made me stop the book was;
“His hands went behind my neck, and he stood on his toes, allowing me to absorb his lithe body into my more muscular and heavier build. He was so tiny and frail, yet all male. He lived in a neutral place of seeming feminine due to his delicate beauty, while maintaining a young man’s masculinity. I’d never witnessed such soft features on a male who alternately acted and appeared so boyish.”
I don’t think I would have minded the word usage if it had only been used a couple of times, but it was used so frequently whenever Davis saw Tim that it just gave me a weird vibe. I guess all of this to say I’m just not Vibing with this book.
Review of Rescue me, Daddy. Michael’s new book is another masterpiece. It has a beautiful age difference relationship, angst, love, a Daddy/boy bedroom dynamic, and very poetic descriptions of feelings between the two main characters. Davis, fresh after the breakup of a long-time relationship and looking for a change of scenery ends up in the small town on the map of America, called Valentine. The move from Sunny California beaches was unplanned, but so welcome, when he felt that his life became stale, his partner was bored with his monogamous views and kept calling him old. And Davis felt old, his soul needed a boost of romance and love in his life. Tim, young, naïve, innocent, and abused, never saw the end to his suffering until his stepfather threw him out of the house on a wintry night. Thank God for Carl. Who opened his home and his heart to this precious boy. He gave him a sanctuary and decided to become a father figure to Tim. Poor Tim, touch starved, malnourished, carrying the signs of beatings and whipping, beautiful as an angel, not able to lie, pure as the first snow, he was so unprotected from the life, so open and trusting, sometimes in the wrong people, who just wanted to use him. Until his meeting with Davis. The older, mature, sophisticated, wealthy, and famous author, was Tim’s wet dream, and he came to rescue Tim from more abuse from his stepdad. To Davis Tim was forbidden, his mind making him feel even older compared to the beautiful boy who started to occupy his thoughts. But there were other predators that were circling around and Davis wanted to make Tim safe, protected, and loved. The story of their romance is so touching, with Davis fully accepting the Dominant part in their lovemaking and Tim submitting so beautifully, willingly giving Davis the reigns in the bedroom. But despite Tim’s young age, his character showed a great future leader when Tim pushed his shy ways away and became concentrated on some projects. Also, the boy has a brilliant mind and an exceptional work ethic, willing to do everything for the people who showed him even a hint of love. I cried at Tim’s memories of his childhood, and when Carl gave him a job and security for the first time in his life, made his goal to see Tim to become healthy, eat well and as much as he wanted, and when Tim still was careful not to take advantage of Carl’s goodness, so frightened to become a burden- so many tears. I was very emotional when Tim confessed to his girl Shotzie, who is his best friend, of his feelings toward Davis, and how she was excited for him to find someone to be with, someone who’ll care for him and look for his best interests. There would be steamy sexy scenes, thoughtful conversations, and the sharing of the most intimate cravings of the soul and body between Tim and Davis. Tim was so honest in what he wanted, so open about his desires that he made Davis to overcome his uncertainty and reservations. There would be some dark themes featured in the book, something that will make you furious and want to get justice for the abused, but I’m not going to spoil it for you. Dive into this story with an open mind, get a ton of sensual pleasure, and enjoy the ride with this perfect couple.
Have you ever wanted to stick a pin in a map to pick the location for your next big adventure? Maybe as a place to dine, a vacation spot, or even to go as far as a place to relocate??
Well that's exactly what Davis one of the mc's here in Michael Robert's new release does. As he needs a change in life and to get away from his current situation, so he sticks a pin in a map and it lands on Valentine, Nebraska of all places. And this is where he meets our other mc nineteen year old Tim. Let's just say their instant attraction and pull to each other is palpable and can probably be felt by anyone in the vicinity. Especially when Davis's protective mode kicks in and Tim's innocence and eagerness for a real relationship shines through. 🥵🔥
The author Michael Robert must have at some time lived in small town USA because his depiction there of is always spot on and relatable (well except to some of the things going on in Valentine). So with this new book you're getting the "best" of small town romance, wonderful secondary characters, great banter, exceptional daddykink and some current and past scandals that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
I highly recommend this book and author. Seriously you can't go wrong as you'll always get a little of everything you want in a romance novel!!
Congratulations Michael Robert on another fabulous story!🎉🥳 I can't wait for the next one! ❤❤❤
Ps. I loved that Tim had Carl and Shotzie as his found family and protectors as well.
Michael Robert is a craftsman storyteller. The setting, the people, and the layered characters are all pretty amazing. He transports you to his world, where you can practically taste, touch, and smell it.
Rescue Me, Daddy had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see how things were going to progress. This is on the darker side with abuse as a central piece of the story. But there is of course, hope, love, and new starts to balance it from getting to be to all-consuming.
Davis, a successful author needs a life change and moves to the small town of Valentine Nebraska. There he finds Tim. Young and sweet. In some ways, he seems younger than he is from the sheltered life he’s lived, but at the same time, he is strong and self-assured. Something about him calls to him to protect and make him his own.
In the midst of everyday life in this town with a story, Davis and Tim find they don’t just like each other, they also have the same lingering fantasies that help build their relationship.
As unlikely as these two were to meet, they build something strong and beautiful.
One of the things that I love about Author Michael Robert is his ability to write a sweet and often times, steamy MM romance; yet also throws in an interesting mystery. Rescue Me, Daddy is another such story. Tim Miller is a country boy who escapes the clutches of a physically abusive stepfather and begins his journey of self-discovery while navigating a blossoming relationship with an older man. Davis Hill is a successful Author who picks up and relocates from Los Angeles to a rural community after ending a long-term, toxic relationship. Davis soon meets Tim and is instantly intrigued by the shy and timid, young man. So begins their dance of flirtation and romance. But what is romance, without a little mystery? Being the inquisitive Author that Hill is, he begins to realize that everything is as it seems in his quiet community of Valentine. Is it possible that he has stumbled across something so dark that it will shake the community to its core?
This was one of those books that I could not put down. I had to peel myself away for the pages each night, just so that I could get some sleep.
As always, I highly recommend this book as well as all of Robert’s other works. The man creates such interesting characters with such rich backstories that you completely lose yourself in his words.
Well this was a surprise. I mean, I was expecting a sweet story, with some angst and a little bit of drama. And yes, that's what I got. And so much more!
Michael Robert writes his characters with a sweetness that characterizes them, regardless of their age, backstory, or whatever trauma they may have. This is the case of Tim, who survived the mistreatment and abuse of his stepfather, but who nevertheless, despite being hurt inside, still remained whole, who knew how to seek and accept the help of who would become his father figure, and who decided to grow and open his wings little by little to overcome the obstacles that were put in front of him. Despite everything he suffered in his childhood and adolescence, he kept his innocence intact, a pure but old soul, some would say. But he also knew who he was and what he wanted in his life from a young age, and when he found it in Davis, he found the courage to go for it.
And Davis, a mature, successful, somewhat worn-out man, to whom a failed relationship left him somewhat lost, although he always felt that something was missing in it, that desire to care, to protect, that his ex did not want or could not fill. Someone with flaws but who tried to learn from them. With a curious character that allowed him to research for his books and suddenly found himself living within his own history. Someone who, when he decided to turn his life around 180 degrees, found the other half of himself. He met that someone who could fill the gaps, what was missing in his life.
And as they meet, get to know each other, and slowly begin to forge their relationship, something dark and wicked lurks beneath the surface of this small, half-lost Nebraska town, giving the story an unexpected twist. And that is all I am going to say about it, because although little by little you are seeing what is going to happen, it is no less surprising for that.
There is only one point that I would like to object to, and that is that time jump at the end of the book. I would have liked to see how some situations were resolved and not just read that they were resolved. It gives a sense of rush at the end that was not felt in the entire book. It is not a criticism, more a personal wish. (Above all, I would have liked to see Grant's face when he saw how well Davis chose this time !!!)
Another amazing story from this incredible author!
I was given an advance copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
New author: Sorta (previously read in anthologies) Format: ARC (Kindle) Narrator(s): NA New: NA Audiobook challenge: NA Rep: Queer Keywords: Author, farmer boy, small town Nebraska, hardware store, surrogate father, daddy/boy, investigative journalism/writing, crime ring, tw: abuse, food deprivation, rape (off page), homophobia, hate speech
First, we love an own-voice queer story, so that’s always a win. Second, the concept of this book is just great: it’s got the thriller element, the gay awakening element, the older man furthering his development element, and a little meta verse with one mc as an author who writes a book based on the story told in the book. Tim’s character is just delightful, and Davis is complex and very likable. Carl, the surrogate father, is an amazing supporting character with his own story to tell that doubles as the voice of the sage throughout. The mystery of Valentine, NE unfolds cleverly and keeps the reader guessing until the last minute exactly what kind of wrong we’re dealing with.
The limitation of this book - that keeps it from hitting the 4-star threshold despite being a better than average concept, plot and character development - is the pacing. Much time is spent early in the book on Davis’s transition to Valentine. The early development of Tim & Davis’ relationship has strong slow burn vibes, until it doesn’t so there’s a bit of whiplash going from one partner who zero experience to a full daddy/boy dynamic in the span of a few pages. Likewise the climax of the mystery plot line happens so late in the book that the resolution is that there isn’t much of one even though there’s easy understanding of what happened. The reader is left to fill in a lot of information. The epilogue is a fantastic HEA, but again is slightly jarring to jump from night it all went down to two years later. With so much attention paid to ramping up the story, it would have been even better to have more depth during the climax and resolution.
One extremely notable element of the book is the authors use of language and dialect that so perfectly stays on brand for each character. It is notable how carefully crafted verbiage is used by each mc in both dialogue and internal monologue. It’s a device that isn’t uncommon, but is done exceptionally well here.
3.5-4⭐️ I don’t believe I’ve read any other books from this author, but I really enjoyed Davis and Tim’s journey. It has some elements that were done very well. First, is Carl Hanks, Tim’s elderly neighbor in Valentine, Nebraska. Their relationship (Tim and Mr Hanks), which likely the first real parental care Tim has experienced is a highlight of the book for me. I loved Carl Hanks and his brand of grumpy affection and care, he is the kind of a real life hero the word needs more of. Also, the two main characters are well done- flawed, real, and well developed. Tim’s abuse at his stepfather’s hand is painful to read, but how special it is that Tim is still filled with kindness and empathy? Davis finds himself in Valentine Nebraska after ending his relationship and is looking to breathe new life into his writing career. I loved his kind and nurturing heart, a perfect fit for Tim. Together, Tim and Davis make quite a good age gap romance. What I was not expecting from the blurb, is that this also has a very well done and gritty true crime aspect, which was a well executed mystery and really makes this book stand out. The early chapters do drag a bit with a lot of set up that doesn’t move the story forward. The conclusion to the mystery was also left quite late in the book. For me, the switch from the final chapter and the epilogue did not work- too abrupt and too many conclusions for the reader to draw. Rounding up to 4 stars mostly for Mr. Carl Hanks and the overall quality of the writing.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I loved this book and the main characters Tim and Davis. Before they find each other unexpectedly, they have quite a backstory. Tim is so sweet and I love everything about him. He has had a tough life at home. The story begins from there, when he is thrown out of home and will be taken in by elderly neighbor Carl. Everybody should have in their life such a vise and kind soul as Carl.
Davis is a famous author who has a lot going on in his life and due to this he makes a life altering decision to move to Nebraska, small town Valentine. Boy from a small town and a man from a big city will meet and the spark of desire has been ignited.
How they see each other is beautifully written. All the feels are out there and while reading, I felt all of them - hope, courage to go out there, angst, hurting, being in love and happiness.
Tim, who in the beginning is shy and afraid, has so many layers. We will see his jorney with Davis and how good they are for each other. Davis is protective, caring and completely in love.
The story gets sinister and dark themes will enter, when Davis has a feeling that this small town has secrets. All is not how it seems. There is danger lurking in this town and the story gets suspenseful.
Thank you for creating beautiful love stories and swoon-worthy heroes, who are complex and growing throughout the story. The characters are well developed and mature.
If you love to read hot, romantic, dark mystery solving, MM love stories with main characters you will fall in love with, then I highly recommend reading "Rescue Me, Daddy".
Michael Robert is a newly found author for me. Every book is surprising and so well written. Mr. Robert has a true way with words and I love his writing style.
I absolutely loved his debut novel When Crow Flies Free and now have found myself binge reading all his books. Also, this book cover is superb and stunning. This could be the one and only - Tim. ❤
This book has all the feels. It is a beautiful and emotional journey of finding your own best family, after being dealt a crappy one. Tim is adorable. The author perfectly captures his innocence, perseverance, and intelligence. He is shy and insecure, while at the same time being confident and strong. He is a lot younger than Davis, but seems his equal in so many ways. Davis is the perfect Daddy for him. I don’t always connect with both characters in the Daddy/boy trope, but these characters were wonderfully written and the Daddy/boy presentation was not overdone - it was just right.
The story was full of drama and angst, but the author still found ways to infuse plenty of humor. The intimate scenes were spicy hot, and still some of them had me laughing out loud. Tim is just so innocent and says what he thinks. His character is honest to a fault and some of his word choices or questions during intimacy just fit him perfectly. He is direct and honest, and all the more lovable for it.
The book was well-written and the epilogue is satisfying in that it shows us how the MCs received their HEA, and showed how some of the characters received their comeuppance. There was a lot to unpack in this book, but I’d have liked to have found out how things played out for other characters in the book. Still, the book filled its purpose and more. It is a beautiful love story with beautiful characters who came together to form their own best family.
Davis is a best selling author, at the end of a five year relationship, and moving to a small Nebraska town to change things up. He meets Tim, 19, a boy who has suffered years of abuse from his stepfather, shy, slow to trust, gay, and wanting nothing more than someone to love him. Davis steps in, rescuing Tim from his angry stepfather, and is instantly attracted this beautiful young man. Tim is drawn to Davis, also, wanting to know more about him. As Davis and Tim get to know more about each other as they spend time together, the emotional and physical attachment grows. An outside event causes a rift in their relationship, and it looks like they might not get back to each other until Davis is there to rescue him for real. I especially liked the character of Tim, he had so many sides to him, innocent, childish at times, mature when working with people, adventurous when exploring his sensual side with Daddy and forthright in his wants, willing to trust and open his heart, yet insecure also. Davis was careful when introducing Tim to physical pleasures, going slow as the emotional attachments grew stronger, protective of him, but also sometimes second guessing his actions when considering the age gap so not making the best choices. I read the book in one sitting, unable to put it down, with a few tense, heart-pounding moments toward the end. I would give it 4.5 stars.
**I was given a free copy of this book to read and review for Gay Romance Reviews.**
This one was a rough read for me. Nineteen year old, Tim Miller, has been sheltered and abused by his step father for years. When the step father finally tells him to get out, it freezing outside and he's not dressed for it. After making his way to the neighbors house he asks if he can help him. Carl takes immediate action to get Tim away from that monster. The first half of the book was good, interesting even BUT here is where it took a nose dive for me. When the much older professional writer moves to town he takes a liking to Tim which becomes an obsession. Tim is very innocent and hasn't been exposed to kinks or sex but immediately Davis has the need to make him his.
The way Tim's character is written he comes off as slow or slower than your average nineteen year old and the way that Davis went at him wasn't a daddy/boy kink but a huge ick for me. The suspense at the end wasn't scenes I could handle and skipped through most of them. I am not a warning kind of reader but this one got me for sure.
I enjoyed this read. Tim was really sweet. Super innocent and naive, but kind and thoughtful. He was very straightforward, which I liked. Davis was kind, too. He was smart and confident. These two go well together. Davis is in control, but in a soft way that Tim needs and they both appreciate. It works well.
I enjoyed the hurt/comfort of Tim's life, with Davis and Carl both acting as heroes in his story. Carl was delightful and I need more of him. The mystery with the doctor and the town was unique as well. I thought overall tim felt very childlike, which initially made me hesitant of their relationship, but in the end I felt they were great for each other. I love Carl's continued support throughout the book and Schotzie's unique charm, unwavering friendship, and loyalty.
Notes: 2/5 spice levels, daddy/boy, hurt/comfort, abusive family, author mc, age gap, virgin mc, small town
Wow a daddy and boy novel that was erotic, but with a gut wrench sub plot!!!
Wow. I can't say this enough, this book rocked me. Tim was so special and so brave for a boy who was abused, and Mr Hanks--- freaking Carl---- that sweet old man took Tim in, and Davis, Tim's love interest was so good!! Like for real, daddy yes. Davis is an author, a little older, an experienced gay, older man and instantly he falls for Tim at the hardware store. The town has something nefarious and sickening going on behind the scenes. Duel first person point of view. There are some triggers... So be careful how you approach this if you are squeamish. HEA, but I feel as if the ending was rushed, but it worked so I'm not going to complain. Heat level 3/5
I love small town stories and stories about authors and this one brings together both of those. Here we have two people who find each other at just the right time. Tim has had a tough family life but has been rescued once by an elderly neighbor. Now, he's ready to build a life for himself and is hoping to find love as part of that. Davis is fleeing the memories of a bad relationship and randomly chooses to settle in Valentine NE where he meets Tim. This a wonderfully written story of the development of their relationship.
I loved the first half of the book. Tim was rescued by Carl and was given a good life. Davis came into the picture and when he met Tim, it was mutual lust. When they finally got intimate, Davis turned into an abuser. Tim had already been abused in his life. It was disgusting how Davis used Tim for his own gratification and ignored Tim's needs. Tim needed to learn about sex and eased into it slowly and patiently. I've read other Michael Robert books and liked them. What was he thinking on this one?
A first for me from this author and I am hooked. Can't wait to check out more from him. This was such a interesting book with a very beat storyline. It really pulled me in !! The characters were addicting. I loved Tim. How could you not after everything he went through and always stayed strong. Davis was amazing too. Love the side characters with Shotzie and Carl. It was such a good book. I wish it hadn't ended so abruptly. But I love a good hea. Great read !
The pacing was a little off and the story was all over the place. I did enjoy it but there were definitely things that held me back from loving this book. One small thing was the term "boy pussy". Absolutely loathe that in a mm book. The fact that a really intense and dramatic scene happened and then we get NO CLOSURE in the next chapter, it goes straight to the epilogue. Oh, and the prologue wasn't a prologue because the same time and place just continued into the next chapter.
