Lady Lucy Powell would never settle for an arranged marriage to Lord Lathrop, a man she had never met. Only a man as mysterious and passionate as the heroes of dreams could ever win her hand--someone very much like the handsome stranger who had recently moved into nearby Lathrop Castle. But nothing could have prepared her for the truth about this dashing scoundrel.
Having read the other books about the Powell family, I became enchanted with their lively, loving nature. I especially liked Lucy. I can easily relate to her desire to remain free and independent, however, I think it's an unrealistic dream for her time. Lucy is a very modern woman in a nineteenth century novel. I was willing to overlook that because she's such a great character and the romance is very sweet. I especially like novels where the characters become friends before falling in love and this one is a great example. The friendship and romance develops beautifully and realistically. Lucy maintains her fiery spirit throughout and doesn't give up her dreams, she just opens her mind and heart to share her dreams with someone who loves her. I knew Phillip's secret, having read the other books in the series, but I enjoyed the story anyway. This first book is the best in the series and one for the keeper shelf.
This was a charming little story. I really enjoyed it. Looking back, not too much really happens, it's just a pleasant love story about Lucy and Phillip.
Lucy is panicked when she learns the Duke of Lathrop wants to marry her, sight unseen. Thinking he only wants to set up his nursery and not wanting to be in a loveless marriage Lucy declares she wants to be an author and a spinster. She has a knack for storytelling and quite the imagination, I thought her daydreams and creative assumptions were endearing and entertaining. She does not expect to meet Phillip, the dukes steward and she doesn't expect the deep friendship that they form. She is so set on staying unmarried that she doesn't realize she is actually falling in love.
Phillip has a secret and that secret prevents him from showing his true feelings for Lucy. Not wanting to scare her away he settles for friendship, for the time being. I thought they had great chemistry. It wouldn't take long to guess Phillip's secret, but its not revealed until the very end of the book. I wish it had been exposed earlier, as it was I thought everything wrapped up too quickly. Anyway, Phillip was a great hero, I liked his character quite a bit. He has the broody thing going on, but he is kind and patient. I loved how he so easily fit in to Lucy's family and what a blessing they were to him. He has served in the war and seen some tough things, being with Lucy helps lighten him.
The romance was sweet, it progresses a tad slowly (I wouldn't have minded a few more stolen kisses), but I loved that they have such a strong friendship and respect for each other. I would have loved to see them together as a couple. Like I said, not a whole lot happens in the book, but it was still quite fun. I did think it was a little overly descriptive at times, but not enough to make me skim. Overall, it's one I would recommend if you can find a copy(I'm hoping it will eventually be republished for Kindle).
