The last thing Lance expected to find while helping Franks look for a new house was a ghost. Shelia just wanted to graduate and get on to college, but that never happened. The last thing she remembers is being at home on the couch, then waking up in a deep hole in the middle of nowhere. She wants answers. How did she get there and why?
Who wanted her dead?
Lance and Angus can't ignore the plea for help and get to work, piecing together the evidence and talking to those who knew the victim. Nothing makes any sense. There is no reason this girl had to die. As they work the case, they also welcome a new member to the team, one who is fighting Angus for his side of Lance's bed.

"I know you can handle that power between your legs. You've proven that."
Ghostly Envy has one of those mysteries that, if you are good at solving mysteries, you will probably figure out in an instant. However, I am dumber than a box of rocks, so it took me a while.
But with the Ghostly series by E.M. Leya, the mystery itself is not really the most important part to me. It is the journey we take to solve it. This series is more than just mysteries. It is about the found family Lance and Angus build around them — their friends, their family, and yes, even the ghosts — all supporting each other through some really intense situations.
It is also about learning the lives of the ghosts who appear. These spirits want answers, they want closure, and it is about the resolution, not just the who, what, or how. That is what makes it interesting to me.
I keep coming back to this series because I love the characters, and this installment was no different. It is not my favorite of the bunch, but it is still just as solid. Plus, we get a new addition to the family, and that is always fun.
sheila was so sweet. her death was pointless and she did not deserve that. i'm glad she got to cross over with her grandma though, that was a nice finale. i felt sad for michael though, the girl he loved and had planned his whole life with was murdered.
it's nice seeing angus and lance's relationship develop more and more each day.
and franks is a sweetheart, i like him a lot.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This one was a bust for me. By page 26, I knew who the killer was. Literally, the minute the name is mentioned, I'm like yep that's who it is.
There is so much filler in these books and not anything else. We talked more about Frank and his new house, or the puppy that Bethany and Ray saw then we did the case. Or even the romance. What romance??? Lol. I saw one review where they weren't even sure if Angus and Lance had had sex. Yes they do, you just never read it. We get a kiss and then the talk about what they did, but nothing else.
Then at the end, they accidently slip with the I love yous and I literally laughed. We see NOTHING about their relationship except they eat together. NOTHING!
This author isn't for me. I don't need sex in books to make them good. But the cases aren't even that great. So I'm going to wipe this series off my list.
4 stars. Audiobook. Paranormal cozy mystery with a touch of romance, zero spice, contemporary setting, series of 9 books following the same couple. Police homicide detective and medical examiner that can see ghosts. I would not say this is a buying-level series, but if you can get it from the library or part of a subscription service, then go for it. Maybe a good pallet cleanser after something super emotional since there is very little drama, angst or action.
The stories were well written and I eventually warmed to the characters, but the series overall was somewhat bland. It was too light in too many areas and needed a bump-up somewhere. No spice, little to no romance and sweetness, lack luster bad-guys, average investigating, no extra quirky parents, no nosy but endearing neighbors, no sassy friends or snarky ghosts, no obnoxious but lovable siblings/boss, no crass BFF or fun-loving crazy aunt. We don’t even get any decent hurt/comfort. At book 5, the MCs are a couple but still going home alone and spending so much time separate, even when they are dealing with some sad stuff and only a short drive away. There was some cuddle scenes and sweetness, but it’s really far into the series and sparse. I feel a bit unfair in my assessment because these books are fine, I’ve just read so many that are similar but way more than fine.
Lance and Angus and their ghostly friends are back. The ghostly mystery they have to solve with Angus' partner, Franks, involves a suspected runaway. Only Sheila didn't run away, she's dead. I enjoyed seeing everyone again and seeing how their relationship continues to develop. The mystery was a bit weak this time around, it was easy to figure out who did it from the very beginning. Just the whys of it were in question. Despite that i still had a good time reading it and want the series to continue.
Unfortunately there was WAY too much time spent on tiny mundane details or trying to build characters which never got very far. Not much of an actual (paranormal) mystery story here.
my favorite to date, great characters and series growth
Rating: 4.5🌈
Ghostly Envy see big changes in the interpersonal relationships of some of the main characters of the Ghostly series.
Detective Angus Young reveals to Franks that he’s been getting his information from the ghosts of the victims of the crimes he and his partner have been investigating. It’s a huge deal because it could upset their friendship as well as their professional partnership.
It has the effect of bringing Franks more throughly into the inner circle, a mixed bag of real and ghostly found family members that’s been accumulating over each story. Angus’s ghost seeing mother, her ghost friends, his father, ME Lance, his ghostly friends like the hundred plus years Ray, Cele the celebrated cook, and more. This book will certainly bring new additions to the group.
It all starts innocently enough with Angus and Lance having talked Franks into looking at buying a house. It’s while house shopping that Franks becomes a part of his friend’s paranormal life and we meet a lovely poignant ghost.
Ghostly Envy might be my favorite to date. Not because it’s lacks the horrific crime scenes of the prior stories but because we get to know this ghost and her story so intimately. She makes a real impact on us, just as she does on Franks and the rest.
The crime, its resolution, even the criminal, it all makes sense, in a very sad human way.
On the paranormal side, we see that even ghosts, at least according to E.M. Leya, have a shot at love, albeit in a different aspect. That’s a delightful thought.
I absolutely enjoyed this story and the growth it demonstrates in terms of characters, relationships, and world building.
There’s another story coming, just no date as yet. I’m waiting with great anticipation!
Definitely recommending the Ghostly series for all lovers of the paranormal romance trope with the elements of mystery and murder thrown in.
I’m new to EM Leya’s work and I’m looking forward to reading more. I really enjoyed this book and thought that it was another good addition to the Ghostly Series. This book didn’t have as graphic explanation of the murder. There’s no on page intimate scenes between Angus & Lance but it’s alluded too, so if you’re here for the steam this book/series most likely won’t be your cup of tea. I do like that Angus & Lance seem closer romantically than the previous books. At the start of this book Angus & Lance are helping Franks look for a new house where Lance sees a ghost on the swings in the backyard. Lance goes to talk to the ghost to see what she wants.
The ghost happens to be the 17 year old daughter of the previous owner of the house who died a year ago. All she remembers is that she was eating dinner on the couch then she woke up in a deep hole in the middle of nowhere. Lance tells Angus & Franks who she is, why she’s there and what happened to her. Shelia just wants her body to be found so her parents can find some closure, since she was declared as a runaway. I’m really glad that Angus & Franks could solve Shelia’s case and hopefully give her parents some closure. Lance’s new dog Haunt was an adorable addition. I’m looking forward to reading Ghostly Claus next, as well as more books by EM Leya in the future. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author to others.
This was a good procedural. The police work was excellent. The questions they asked each suspect and witness were perfect, totally realistic. The mystery was good and the reader became aware of who was guilty when the police did. We weren’t dealing with total idiots.
I really like that the author only describes important stuff but does explain enough. For example, they went through a drive through and the text said, “After everyone had ordered…” Some authors would tell us what each of the three people ordered. Then at other times we were given a bit of information to set the scene or introduce a character like saying they wore a t-shirt and jeans.
I’m so glad the MCs finally consummated their relationship. At the end of the last one they didn’t even stay in the same bed if one spent the night. They went away for a weekend between these two books and now have sex (off page—only mentioning that they’d had it and making a few jokes about it) and spend the night with each other. They even have keys. I accidentally read the next one before this one so I know where it’s going. I’m just happy where it is right now.
Since I’ve read the next one, I’m on to number five.
The reader, Greg D. Barnett (Not the other Greg B.) was pretty good. His female voices weren’t great nor varied but there was a greater variety with the men.
I have read every book in this series, except for the last one. (Ghostly Awakening, Ghostly Findings, Ghostly Envy, Ghostly Claus, Ghostly Target, Ghostly Hostage, Ghostly Death, and Ghostly Dilemma) The entire series are 4-4.25 stars all day long. If you are looking for sexy times on page that stem up your reading glasses, this is not that at all. All sexy times are off page and that doesn't distract from the stories at all but adds to its charm. It actually feels sweet. This is a soft, slow burn, low angst, story with two cinnamon rolls for main characters that both give me a toothache. This is seriously a great palate cleanser and while there are some stakes the story is not about that.
Lance, an assistance medical examiner is on his first day back at work after a bad car accident almost killed him. His only family is his brother, who is away in the Navy. Lance leads a quiet life very alone in his daily life with few friends he has at work. One his first day back, the ghost of one of the corpses on his table starts to talk to him and Lance thinks it is a side effect of the head injury he sustained, he feels crazy and is freaking out about what it means for his future. In comes Angus a homicide detective that inadvertently sees Lance interact with a ghost for the first time. Growing up with a mother who can speak to the dead, Angus feels compelled to help Lance understand what is happening to him.
What comes after is Lance finding friendship and love in both the living and the dead. Finding family, friends, and love has never been so sweet. The respect and care Lance and Angus show each other is top tier relationship goals. The books are not action packed, there are no explosions, no hanging by one finger off the edge of a cliff moments. But these stories carry a lot of heart and are just sweet. Definitely going to check out E.M. Leya's other series.
I enjoyed this third book in the series. This series has been a fun discovery for me. In this book, Lance and Angus discover a teenager hanging out at the house Franks is looking at. She tells Lance that she was studying for an exam and then she remembered nothing until she woke up in a pit where she eventually died. She tells them where her body is and Franks pretends to discover it when he’s out riding his dirt bike. One of the interesting things in this book is how they have to wait around to actually be able to investigate as they can’t act like they have the information they have. No one is going to believe they are communicating with the ghost of the victim. They’d look like suspects.
The mystery itself was easy for me. I had the suspect immediately. There are a few small attempts at red herrings but nothing serious. It was pretty obvious to me and I’m surprised it took Angus, Franks, and Lance so long to figure it out.
I’m enjoying the series and look forward to the next book.
This is the third book in the series, and I find I’m really liking them. Lance, who gained the ability to see ghosts in the first book, is now very comfortable with his new gift. Lance and Angus’ relationship has now gone to the next level. They finally admitted they’re in love, and they spend a lot of time together. Franks knows about Lance’s ability, and although he was unconvinced at first, he thinks it’s very convenient to have the victim on hand when they need to search for murderers. In this book, they meet the ghost of Shelia, who is hanging out in the house that Franks wants to purchase. Shelia is a young woman with no enemies. She was left to die in a pit and she has no memory of who kidnapped her. Angus and Franks, with the help of Lance and a bunch of ghosts, follow the clues and find out who killed Shelia. I had a strong suspicion about the killer from the start, she was giving off weird vibes. I loved when they find a new puppy and name it Haunt, so cute when she takes over the house and the ghosts play with her.
Thank you sweet baby jesus Lance and Angus are FINALLY doing the bow chicka wow wow, hiding the sausage, doing the horizontal mamba...you get my drift. What we don't see is any of it in print. It's alluded to, but not described. So if you want your fix of graphic blow by blow (pun intended) sex scenes this series is probably not for you.
And also... I really really never want to even visit this Texas town. They've had two serial killers in less than 6 months. One offed dozens of people before getting caught...BECAUSE of a GHOST! And now there's a teen girl who's been murdered that the police wrote off as a runaway. I feel like the entire missing person's department of this town's police force should be fired. I mean really, did you think that 20 plus people simply vanished and Oh Well?
Lance and Angus find themselves helping a teenage girl get her body found and find out who murdered her. Not a very complicated plot. But good enough to read on in the series.
I'm really enjoying Lance and Angus. I'm really glad there are several more books. When I get close to the end of a series I really like, I tend spread them out to make them last. This qualifies as one of those series I'd do that with, but I'm going to try not to this time. I can always go back to the beginning.
This one delt with the death of a teenager. The mystery was good. I like that they don't get to far ahead of themselves, knowing they are going to have to explain how they solved the case. They have to get the evidence to line up with what they know.
I love the interactions with the ghosts. I'm glad that some ghosts stay around book to book.
I've read this theme, someone who works with the dead seeing ghost a few times. But it's always been interesting to see the different takes on it. They might have a similar theme, but each series has given it it's own flair. I look forward to seeing what comes next.
I really felt so bad for her and Michael. To die so young is really horrible let alone knowing the who, the why and the how. I think the we all have gotten close to Shelia and wanted to keep her. As for Haunt we will be keeping her, she is a great comfort to them all. I am glad the books aren't about sex. Its about the the cases the need to solve and those that died who need closure and justice served. It also about love between Angus and Lance. A good match up would be Franks and Christine, they never mentioned her being married. I also noticed in each book Ray seems to get older. At first he was a kid in short pants, in the next book he was her early 20's and the third he was said to in his early 30's. Which is it? Its the only real flaw I have seen.
Another ghostly mystery to puzzle over. The series continues with Lance and his Detective Angus with the others to solve Shelia’s murder. I would probably recommend this series to be read in order or at least to have read book 1 to understand the characters. The murder scene in this wasn’t a nice one but they never are. 👻Ray and 👻Bethany still hung around along with Cel and Joesph. Helping Franks to buy a house they stumble on a girl 👻 in the yard. The story of Shelia 17 years murder mystery begins to find her killer after 10 months of being gone. The story was written with both povs for Lance and Angus . A fast pace as scenes play out with some information repeated for the ghost telling the details to Lance. A book finish with another puzzle solved in the series.
Better! Much better! Even though the story deals with the death of a 17-year-old, it had an interesting twist at the end, that somehow made it easier to deal with. 🥰
I will be honest and let you know that I read this book last year, but never got around to rating and reviewing it... my bad.
Now, I need to get back to this series... so moving on to Ghostly Claus... maybe I should have waited until Christmas to read this one? 🤣
This is another solid and intriguing mystery. The funny thing is, I almost feel like we get to know more about the ghosts involved than we do about Lance and Angus. They're definitely intriguing characters, and I do enjoy them. But I still want to know more about Lance and Angus, as well, and I feel like their 'romance' is a little unrealistic for today's world (). That's really the only thing I'm not liking as much about this series -- the sexual/romantic aspects are pretty weak.
I'm surprised that I like these books as much as I do. There is absolutely no sex and only the barest hint of romance. (Maybe a kiss or two.) The mysteries are pretty easy to figure out. There is a lot of repetition. And yet, I'm enjoying this series. I think one of the main reasons is that I'm listening to the audiobooks and I like the narrator. His voice is calm and soothing. I also love the secondary characters. Angus' mom and the assortment of ghosts are all fun to spend time with. So, as long as the audiobooks keep coming, I'll keep listening.
This one is the same as the other two aside from the plot. An okay story with partially developed characters and a straightforward plot with no surprises. The reader can see the conclusion coming from the first time the murder timeline is laid out. Even the reason for the murder can be guessed easily before the 33% mark of the book.
I won't be reading #4 - even with my compulsive need to finish series, I just can't read another one.
While Angus and Lance, help Franks to search a new home. Lance stumbles across a ghost in the back yard of a house Franks is looking at. It turns out this girl woke up in a hole near a race track for dirt bikes. She couldn't get out of the hole, and died there. No one has been able to find her body. But how did she end up in the hole, when she doesn't remember anything? So Angus, Lance, and a new believer Franks investigate what happened to her, and who killed her.
Another good one. Sheila shows up and shares that she was dropped into a pit and died of dehydration and exposure 10 months ago. Lance and Angus get on the case with Franks and hope to bring a killer to justice. With the help of an autopsy, other ghosts and Sheila, they find their killer. The ghosts that surround Lance are becoming family and they bring cute little Haunt into their fold. The puppy loves playing with the ghosts and humans. Good story.
It's odd the two go together so well but this author is especially skilled at creating characters who seem like real people. You will be fascinated by the story and charmed by the heroes. As one character in the story says, "What a perfect way to die. I'd be happy to die with frosting on my lips."
I wouldn't mind a ton more of these, or even a spin off trilogy or single with Christine and Franks (I think they'd make a great couple!) I love all the characters, the ghostly cast, the interesting murder mysteries and the sweet romance between Angus and Lance. Overall, an absolutely perfect paranormal romance series and one of my new favorite authors!
I’ve enjoyed this series and seeing their relationship grow. It’s been nice seeing their friend group, especially the ghostly one, increase as well. These are a nice, sweet, clean romance with a little paranormal theme thrown in. Nicely written. I look forward to reading more.
It was a nice and short book. The mystery wasn’t that hard to figure out but it gave us more insight on Lance and Angus relationship and I love that. I can’t wait to see where there relationship goes for the rest of the series. I do wish thou that we have more of Lance of POV but other then that this book was a great addition to the series.
So, I’m really glad to finally see this relationship move forward. We went through the first two books with just a kiss. So now our MC’s have brought Frank’s into the whole seeing ghosts. While helping him look for a house, they find a ghost & her name is Sheila. She isn’t haunting the house; she just comes back to visit from time to time. Her parents had sold the house after she had gone missing as they couldn’t live there any longer. So, I did have the killer figured out and the reasoning behind it right off the bat, but it didn’t take away from the story. I will need to get to the next book ASAP.
This is not the best of the books I have read, but it is sort of a cozy mystery with a touch of the criminal minds or other police procedurals with its criminal of the week format. There isn't really an overarching plot. But it is a good mystery to tuck in to. I am liking the story, though the chemistry between the leads could be a bit better.
Such a great read. It was nice getting to learn about the characters more and their relationships with each other--ghosts and humans. I think I agree with another of the reviewers that this was my favorite of the series so far. Looking forward to another book--hopefully! Recommend reading
