Rate this book
Taking control of your health and well-being is a necessary and personal journey. From teens and parents fighting obesity in America, to aging baby boomers refusing to go quietly into the dark night—everyone can stay fit, healthy, and active for many years to come! This book lays out a sensible and holistic road map that makes health and fitness an ingrained part of your lifestyle, and an easy-to-achieve goal for both men and women at any age.

For more than three decades, Dr. Maffetone has been treating and advising patients, coaching athletes, lecturing worldwide, and writing books about the importance of self-health care. Topics covered in his latest book include how to make healthy dietary choices, obtain the best nutrition from real food, avoid illness and disease, and learn to listen to your body. Also learn the dangers of common dietary supplements, fat-burning exercise for weight loss, reducing stress, controlling inflammation, having a healthy and fulfilling sex life, and much more. Maffetone expertly guides the reader step by step through each topic and provides simple health surveys to help you better understand how the body works and what to safely do if a problem or symptom arises during your fitness or dietary regimen.

Maffetone's 80/20 training philosophy is so fitting: 80% of his ideas are great, and the remaining 20% are nonsense.

A sensible general health and nutrition book that incorporates contemporary notions (such as too much sugar and carbs lead to a host of health problems) without going overboard, like so many books in this area do.

Tons of information in this book. I’ve read through the whole thing but will no doubt refer back to certain sections. The reading of it was spoiled by the horrible editing: mistakes so frequent it got annoying!

The book is about ten years old when I read it, and the nutrition advice, IMO, is a bit outdated. But otherwise, there's a bunch of good info in here. The stuff on feet & shoes is especially good, and the author's most famous for his endurance training advice, which is also included.

My life-long chiropractor recommends this as a great reference to have in the home. We have both a hard copy with lots of bookmarks, and got the Kindle version for reference on the go. Our family of 2 parents, 1 adult child, and 1 grandparent find this indispensable!

Lot of repeat from his book on endurance. While there is lot of advise on nutrition, would have loved to get some running plans and nutrition for running

Lot of good stuff here, the author makes a case for low intensity aerobic exercise, good nutrition, and seeking the advice of an alternative health care practitioner. While my education is practically devoid of life-science courses, I found little in this book to raise red flags. The costs to evaluate this book for yourself are quite low, therefore, highly recommended!

A large read, The Big Book on Health and Fitness is a great primer on all things pertaining to personal well being. The section on nutrition was the largest section of the book and the most helpful.

Enjoyed the aerobic training section and plan on using it, but don't believe in everything else he had to say.

Read it just for the chapters on the "Maffetone method" of heart-rate training. They were useful, but the rest of the book is a bit preachy.

I wish I had read this book (along with many others like it) years ago. A must read for anyone interested in diet/exercise/lifestyle.
