I have nothing left. No family. No money. No future.
So when the games begin I have no choice but to enter.
I know I could die. But without the prize money I’m a goner anyway, the guys my dad owes money aren’t taking “maybe he’ll wake up from his coma soon” as an answer anymore.
Years of cheer and track had prepared me for this. I was born to win this game.
It didn’t matter what it took. Blood. Sweat. Tears. My soul.
Nothing would stop me from getting that money.
Kohl
She would have been fine if I had never been born.
But he took it all from her.
I would do anything to repay her for what my father had stolen.
Sell my soul. My body.
Kill someone.
Hide n’ seek. That’s all it was supposed to be. Play the game, get the money.
But then I was handed a gun and a mask.
She wasn’t part of the plan.
So why the hell is she here?
Will you be watching or playing?
This will be the first book in a series with interconnect standalones. While they can be read out of order, it is recommended to start from Hide n’ Seek. This is a dark book with many triggers, please see the TW on the authors' website before continuing.
4,5/5 ⭐ It was amazing! i had read another book by these authors and i didnt really like it so i was a bit scared but this was so good! The plot was phenomenal and it kept me at the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved the characters and it was well written
This book made me creat a shelf called "What the Fck did I just read???"
It was absolutely dark and messed up and the fact that I enjoyed every minute may tell you something about me!
⚜Genre: Dark Dystopia ⚜Theme: Dark Romance ⚜Targeted audience: Adults ⚜Characters: Vic + Kohl ⚜Representation: LGBTQ+, They/them ⚜TW: a lot! A whole fucking lot! violence- murder- DA - Explicit content ⚜ tropes: brother's girlfriend - revenge - you're mine - touch her and you die ⚜ POV: dual first person ⚜ spice 🌶🌶 🌶🌶🌶🌶 with kinks and degradation ⚜ rating: 4.25 🌟🌟🌟🌟🔅 ⚜standalone: yes, but there could be a sequel ⚜Ending: I'd like to say a fucked up HEA
In this Hunger-Game inspired dystopia, people could enter willingly Hide N Seek game for the chance of winning big money. You are either a Ghost/Hider or a Killer/Seeker. The game spans for 24 hours. If the Hider is able to remain hidden until the time's up, then they are winners. If the Seeker manages to find and KILL their targeted hider then they are the winners. Architects design and control the game and rules. Viewers can sponsor the players and send them gifts.
Kohl is obsessed with their brother's girlfriend Vic and decides to enter the game as a Seeker to win her the money she needs. Victoria has other plans, and though they both promised not to do something rash, she enters the games also as a Ghost. Kohl's brother, Dylan, is after both of them for some reason. Secrets are revealed in flashback scenes and the game gets darker and darker.
To be honest, this read was out of my usual read but I did enjoy it. The writers, two actually, managed to create this chilling setting while making you unconsciously root for the two extremely morally grey main characters.
However, I wished there was more background on why the villains were the villains. Why Dylan hated Kohl. Why their father acted that way! his reasoning was not convincing. Add to that, Kohl's total hatred for his family was reduced to snippets of old memories when their obsession with Victoria took the major part.
Also, there were A LOT OF errors and grammar mistakes towards the middle. Usually I do not take that into consideration especially since this book is indie. However, it was written by TWO authors! a few reread would have easily eliminated all those errors "that fact that it was...." instead of "The fact that it was...." "pther" instead of "other"
but if you are looking for a fucked up book to read, this is for you
✔️dystopian death sports ✔️masked, morally gray characters ✔️queer/trans rep ✔️bdsm ✔️revenge ✔️unhinged femdom ✔️🔪 play, 🔫 play ✔️carves initials into LI's skin ✔️badass sub who will do anything, literally kill, to protect their Domme
There was one section where the pronouns are just wrong--and I don't mean just misgendering, I mean mixing up first and third person pronouns.
This was a wild ride!!!! I didn’t know what to expect but damn I loved this! I was at the edge of my seat all the way to the end of the book. I definitely can’t wait for the next book.
If you picture The Hunger Games but darker and with more cunnilingus you get Hide n’ Seek.
This book was entertaining and the smut was definitely smutting. I do wish we had a bit of a more solid backstory/revenge plot for Vic and maybe iron out some more of the world building for the games but overall this book was quite exciting at times. One thing though that was very frustrating about this book is the insane amount of typos and grammatical errors, at times it could totally pull you out of the moment and make you re-read several sentences to figure out what was meant to be said. Also, I love when books have trans representation and Kohl was also non-binary (although was also referred to with he/him pronouns at times) but I do feel like this was falsely advertised as a lesbian romance when really its f/ftm.
I don’t think i’ll be reading Rate Race in the future but for what it was this book was pretty entertaining and spicy!
This book is basically The Hunger Games meets The Running Man with a sprinkling of The Purge. Conceptually it seems pretty cool, but it fails in its execution. I can't understand how this book has a 4 star rating.
There's nothing actually dystopian about the setting. The book follows Kohl and Victoria (Vic) as they play Hide n' Seek in sanctioned games. The seekers are out to find and kill the hiders (also referred to as ghosts), and the hiders want to, well, hide. The hiders are not allowed to kill the seekers but can temporarily disable them to try and get away.
Right off the bat I have to point out one of my biggest complaints: Kohl is pointed out as being non-binary with they/them pronouns (brother/son with family, good boy with lovers). At one point l, the authors misgendered Kohl. It was likely a slip that the editor(s) didn't catch but it was egregious.
The book switches between Kohl's POV and Vic's POV, but is also riddled with flashbacks to before the games began. The problem is that most of the flashbacks add little to no new information, and when they *do* add new information, it's information that could have been presented in a paragraph or less, rather than an entire chapter. And the dual POVs often provide glimpses of identical dialogue and story description, just told from the other MC's POV. As a result, it feels like the book drags on and is twice as long as it needed to be.
The sex scenes are spicy, but the dialogue in them is cringe inducing and pulled me out of them. Throughout the story, Kohl refers to Vic as their goddess, though there is not a ton of work put into establishing the fact that Vic has any interest in being Kohl's Domme, nor that they have an established dynamic. So it seems very one sided and obsessive for a majority of the book. I will say that the book does a decent job of depicting a Domme/sub dynamic using pet play, praise, and degradation once the dynamic is actually clearly established.
There is plenty of on and off page violence in the book, although you don't see much of actual game-based death until several chapters in. There's a plot twist near the end, but it's not really shocking for anyone paying attention.
I do not recommend this book. The only reason I finished it was because I wanted to leave an honest review, which I wouldn't have been comfortable doing unless I read it in it's entirety.
Story: 1/5 Spice: 2/5 (it's spicy, but I couldn't enjoy it)
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The Games may be deadly, but the spice will definitely bring you back to life.
Vic and Kohl were adorably murderous and I stan. A couple that kills together stays together. And if you want queer sex in puddles of blood and mirror mazes this is the book for you.
And can I just say, the concept of an arena you have to fight to the death is scary when you're randomly chosen for it, but when you have to volunteer? Knowing the government failed its people so spectacularly that they feel they would be better off dying but still making a little money? Terrifying. And the way this book portrays the games is too eerily similar to how reality TV is filmed.
2.5⭐️ This started off really great but after the first 40% I quickly lost interest. I agree with other reviewers that this badly needed to be edited for grammar mistakes. But if you’re looking for a queer dark romance that reminded me of Hunger Games meets Rina Kent’s Legacy of the Gods series, maybe give this one a try.
This book is INSANE. It was so wild and I loved the unhingeness the main characters have. I loved the entire ride. Hide N' Seek was toxic and deliciously dark. I loved the devotion Kohl has for Vic so much, the femdom being so 🥵🤌 ARGH. Seriously so perfect. Ashley Pines and Eden Emory did a FANTASTIC job on this. The flashbacks were really well done. The tension was chef's kiss. I had such a great time diving into this book.
Although you need to make sure to check out the CWs before starting this, as it deals with some pretty heavy themes 🖤
Goodness, this book is a bit of a mixed bag for me. The concept was terrific, but the execution just didn't hit the mark. It read like a 2nd draft that still needed to address plot holes, not a fully edited manuscript. The authors relied too much on the reader, knowing that the book is based on Hunger Games, and built on that.
With that being said, it didn't read like a dystopian novel. Sure, there was economic inequality that led to the games. But aside from "because the plot needed it," there wasn't a reason for people to continue to do the games. It almost seemed like they liked Hunger Games and Purge, so they wrote a fan-fiction. (If that was the case, it could have been fine if that was made clear in the forward of the book because then your readers know to keep that infrastructure in mind when reading.) As a result, I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to buy into the Games being a viable solution to bridge the financial gap the MCs found themselves in.
The spice was decent. However, when the author misgendered their they/he MC with feminine pronouns during a spicy scene, I almost DNF'd.
All in all, I'm not a fan of the way this book lacked direction and did not rely on its own world-building. If these authors continue with the series, I hope they can address these plot and editing issues.
This book was fast paced, murderous & totally sexy.
We have a non-binary MC & their brothers ex girlfriend, who just happens to be the girl they have been obsessed with since high school. Our MC is a masked killer in a live streamed, hunger games style death match and she is their victim. STOP.
And why would I ever say no to a queer dystopian dark romance?? I wouldn’t.
Oh man, I totally forgot to review this. But it was not because I didn't like it (as shown in my rating haha)
🎭 Femdom! We love to see it
🎭 Trans-masc nonbinary lead x femme cis woman, chef's kiss
🎭 The writing is somewhat fanfic-y, and there are so many typos. But, but, but PLEASE look past it, because this is the toxic queer romance we need
🎭 The smut was so fucking good
🎭 The plot is perhaps a little thin, and there are are many flash back scenes which I rarely find good for the pacing. But, honestly, I still enjoyed this book so much
Hide n’ Seek is an Adult Dark Romance novel I enjoyed.
{Vic enters a deadly game of hide and seek where the only way to win is to survive the night}
While this story could have benefited from one more pass through an editor, I didn’t mind the typos/errors. I enjoyed this story for the vibes and the fast paced action that comes with playing a game with life and death stakes.
This book is steamy 🔥. Because the game is being live streamed, hundreds of thousands to millions of people got to tune into these two killers getting it on. There’s a heavy amount of degradation and some praise kink. There’s an unhealthy level of obsession I only enjoy in dark romances 😅 And hot hot hot spice.
I’ll also say it was super refreshing to read a book where the asshole characters say and do horrible things, but misgendering the main character isn’t one of them. People can be obnoxious without using homophobic/transphobic slurs.
Overall, this is the perfect book for the dark romance lovers.
I received an ARC of this from the authors (all opinions are my own)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Listen this book is UNHINGED and I loved every second of it!
So we have: Kohl- uses they/he pronouns and is an unhinged masc bottom who loves being called kitten, good boy, pretty boy. And it actually makes me 🫠
Vic- uses she her and is an absolutely unhinged femme top! vibes when kohl calls her goddess and mistress which just UGHHHH 🥵
I enjoyed seeing the flashbacks of their friendship and then seeing it evolve into a relationship and it felt natural despite being the some of the most deprived and unhinged stuff I’ve read 🤣 I can’t wait to read about the (redacted) in the next book!!!
The family dynamics are yikes at best we meet Kohl’s brother, Dylan and he’s honestly THE WORST! And Kohl’s dad isn’t much better! Also what we learn about what happened to Vic’s dad is heartbreaking 💔
I love these authors whenever they write together it always ends up being a great book and they are both immediate buy authors for me personally.
OMG, where do I even start with this book? It’s like if The Hunger Games and Squid Game had a wild night at a creepy carnival, and baby, it’s SCANDALOUS! 💥
Kohl’s obsession with Vic is off-the-charts hot 🔥—we’re talking levels of devotion that are slightly too intense but like, in the best way possible? The femdom vibes are everything, and the spicy sapphic scenes? Chef's kiss!
Holy hell, y’all, I was both terrified and turned on the entire time! 😳💥 Like, I thought my heart was literally going to fall out of my ass while reading this! It’s a rollercoaster (pun fully intended) that pulls no punches. Seriously, you HAVE to check the trigger warnings before diving in because Jesus, it gets wild. If you’re ready for a ride that’ll make you feel all the feels—both good and bad—definitely pick this one up. Just make sure you’re prepared for the chaos!
Hunger Games meets The Purge fanfiction but make it queer and make it smutty? Which I'd normally have no problem with but there needs to be a lot more world building to explain why tf the games are even a thing as well as why tf the two MCs needed to enter. It is implied because of a capitalistic hellscape but is not really fleshed out at all- and in fact feels not much different then our current capitalistic hellscape. And while we may be living in the end times... it isn't exactly what I would call 'dystopian.' Apart from the needed world building, the authors needed to pay more attention to their characters considering they carefully presented one MC as non-binary and take repeated pains to refer to them with they/he pronouns only to misgender them with feminine pronouns in the middle of a sex scene.
An interesting concept I really wanted to enjoy, but it didn't keep me engaged at all. It was really easy to put down, but interesting enough that I kept coming back.
I liked Vic's story, I disliked the antagonist(s), and as much as I liked Kohl, it almost seemed like they were a bonus character... like they weren't actually necessary for the story in any way other than adding smut.
The back and forth between pov was fine, but some of the flashbacks seemed very unnecessary. They were repetitive or didn't add much to the story.
This book felt like a mix of Hunger Games and Nerve. I love the concept, and while I mostly enjoyed the book, it was missing something. Parts of this book were not believable for me. Specifically, they are in a life or death game and have time for "spice" and never get caught without their clothes by other players? I loved Kohl's character, but Victoria's character frustrated me. Vic was all over the place, whereas Kohl knew exactly what they wanted and went for it.
I started out actually really enjoying this and its fucked up premise, however the execution just doesn't life up to the initial promise. The flashbacks are a little random and mostly worse than the actual present tense chapters, there are so many grammar mistakes and typos still in the book that more editing could've gotten rid of, one time the nonbinary MC literally gets misgendered by the author by accident and the plot was a little illogical at times.
