When Dan Coast is notified by Town of Webb police investigator, Eric Stone, that the caretaker at his camp in Old Forge has been murdered, Dan and his trusty sidekick, Red Baxter, head to New York. And what could be better for two Key West guys than a winter in upstate New York.
What starts out as a search for a new caretaker, soon ends up being a search for a killer. While questioning locals, Dan and Red quickly come to the realization that everyone in town liked Leland Mavin. “He was a great guy,” says everyone. But who, who was the one person who wanted him dead, and why?
Dan is consistent, as well as lucky. All the people around him buoy him and support him as well as care for him in way he cannot care for himself.
This episode’s genesis is the untimely death of Dan’s caretaker for his Upstate New York “camp” purchased but never seen by Dan. Impelled to visit the camp in the middle of winter by the impending visit of his parents, the visit ends up solving several head-scratchers all at once.
I have no clue why I love Dan and Red so much. Maybe it's the humor or maybe Dan's sarcasm and Red's teenage like demeanor. All I know is I'll be jonesing for the next one harder than Dan would for his next tequila seven and lime after being held captive by Mormons. Let's hope we both don't have to wait too long.
One of Riesel's best tales. It must be the tequila, 7 and lime drinks that enables his creative mind. He IS Dan Coast, after all. Can't wait for the next book. Keep those drinks flowing!
Don't know why I keep reading Dan Coast. He's a boozer and swearer, neither of which I appreciate. But there's something about him and Red that just makes me want to keep reading.
As usual, Mr. Riesel delivers. I love all of his books, but the Dan Coast series is my favorite. Start at the beginning and read them all. One caveat: if you read in bed, you’ll have to muffle your laughter or risk annoying your partner and/or pets.
