Aurora Kane—author of Moon Magic, House Magic, and Herbal Magic—is a practicing witch and herbalist with many decades (some say centuries) of experience in casting and conjuring. She lives in the Northeastern United States where she is a founding member of the Coven of the Moonbeam Ravine.
I want to thank NetGalley for providing a free copy of Mystical Mushrooms. This book is fun, informative, and just enforces my belief that mushrooms are awesome. The new-agey parts of the book I could do without; the artwork is gorgeous and would look amazing hanging on a living room wall. Or a kitchen.
DNF. The parts I did read I enjoyed and the illustrations are pretty. For some reason it was a struggle to get my attention and trouble focusing didn't help. Maybe later I'll try reading this again.
This was such a fun book! Kane explored mushrooms’ history looking at the scientific, the folklore, fantasy and magic surrounding mushrooms. I didn’t know how many mushrooms exist and all the interesting facts and stories that go along with the different types of mushrooms. A mix of science and magick, the best kind!
Kane breaks their book down in three parts
First looking at the folklore and different discoveries made about mushrooms. Second a list of 43 different mushrooms (not a field guide) and finally how to use mushrooms in your magickal practices.
Kane definitely did her research and this book definitely sparked an interest in learning more about mushrooms.
I do want to highlight that Kane is known for writing books about magick and witch craft so this book is not meant for the scientific study of mushrooms, though she does include some of the science, this is meant to help people incorporate mushrooms in their magickal healing practices. So if that’s not your thing then maybe skip this one. But if you enjoy learning about herbal magick or even looking at mushrooms from an archetypal sense then I definitely recommend.
I also think that this book is a good introduction to the subject of mushrooms and had similar vibes as the documentary Fantastic Fungi
Anyway mushrooms are awesome and my love for them grew after reading Mystical Mushrooms
NETGALLEY REVIEW | Mystical Mushrooms by Aurora Kane
⭐️ Rating: 3/5 🏷️ Genre: nonfiction, witchy 📝 Review: This book is full of lovely illustrations and tidbits about one of my favorite things, mushrooms. By no means is this a guidebook that should dictate foraging, but rather a fun little book that gives you trivial bits of information about some fantastical and recognizable shrooms. If you’re of the ~witchy~ persuasion you’ll loooove the intention recipes in the back. ✔️ Final Thoughts: Definitely follow this book with a hefty amount of reservations. Sources are cited in the back of the book but I recommend fact checking something before disseminating what you’ve read. 📚 Recommending: Yes - but as a fun, beautiful book. Not a foraging guide or educational text in the least.
Illustrations are beautiful, and the book is chock-full of information. One star off for the overuse of exclamation points, which detracts from the well-researched writing (the copy editor should know better!).
This book was full of soo many lovely mushroom facts!
I picked this book up as from time to time I love doing something spiritual, and I am a great fan of mushrooms, so it seemed this perfecty would intesect my two interests. And it really did bring those two together really well. The book starts with a few chapters on the history of mushrooms and their magic. It talks on how they have been used for magic or have been linked to witches, but also talks about the many great uses for mushrooms like medicinal use or for food. There were many fun facts in there that I did not know and made notes of to remember for later. Like Ötzy the mummy having had mushrooms with him and how the salem trials might have some connections to mushrooms too. It made me feel more connected to mushrooms with this information and knowledge giving me a good framework for the chapter that takes up most of the book.
This is when the book starts taking two or more pages for various mushrooms. It goes over more common ones you could find yourself but also some very interesting rare ones that are absolutely awesome. For every mushroom information was given for what kind of menifestations you could use them and I really enjoyed that. It then gave some text too with some background information and stories about the mushroom. There were some shrooms I was happy about to learn more magical knowledge about them, but with other pages I was amazed to learn new mushrooms that blew my mind.
Lastly there are a few pages with some spells you can try out yourself. I like it that these sometimes give suggestions for what shrooms to use but not all are set in stone. Especially as finding specific mushrooms can be hard at any time of the year it is nice it gave you multiple options to choose from. One that was specific though was a truffle one and that one I did try. It was a manifestation for self worth in your love life that I really enjoyed. For my tools I turned on a candle for this, had my labadorite stone with me for extra self love and ate truffle crisps. Then I said the words the book had written down and sent my hopes into the air. I struggle a bit with self worth in relationships sometimes so I am hopeful this might help.
All together this was a lovely book that I really enjoyed and am considering buying a pretty hardback from to put it on my shelf.
4.5 stars rounded up I received an eARC and this was my honest review.
Pretty good. Just didn't like that some interesting facts were very, very brief and not cited in the text. This led me to want to know more but with nowhere to look. Unless doing my own research...which is fine, but it'd be way useful if things that were not common knowledge were cited in the actual paragraphs and texts. The illustrations and colors make up quite a bit of magic within the book. Overall 3.5-4 stars. Lots of great information and written in a way that's easy for comprehension.
Love love love! What an enchanting, charming and fascinating read, and so beautifully illustrated. I wish there were more books like this. Definitely worth getting a hard copy.
This book is about the magical manifestations that different mushrooms can help with. Informative and beautiful art. I just had a hard time not glazing over on this one.
This book was a gift from some dear friends, and I was so happy to receive it! The illustrations are gorgeous. There are a lot of interesting facts (some things I already knew but a lot I didn't!) about mushrooms from all different angles, such as culinary, historical, mystical, cultural, and more. I think this book is a fun sampler of many mushroom-related topics and could be a good jumping-off point to research further on the subjects that spark the most interest.

Fun but felt like it was surface level research and more aestheticly inclined than useful. Good for beginners on mushrooms or witchcraft for the basics.
It has beautiful art and I did appreciate the mushroom manifesting content per fungi.
I also wanted to know more about the author but there is limited info on them. Only one press-related bio repeated everywhere and a photo. People have commented on her other books vis reviews on here & Amazon it seems very AI… which has seen an increase in these last 5 years.
…I’m not for witch hunts and if she wants privacy that’s cool, but it does seem a bit odd so all things considered...author should address that to cleared it up 👍🏻

Highly recommended! Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5 out of 5 stars)
In this work, Kane devotes the first section of the book to information about mushrooms interwoven with beautiful illustrations of the specific varieties that she overviews, and the second section to manifestations and spells that the reader can incorporate into their life using the information that she’s covered.
I thought the overview of various types of mushrooms was done beautifully. With illustrations being a part of nearly every page, the book feels like a mystical field guide. While allowing for mushrooms to be very complex organisms that could take up even more space than she provides, she yet compiles several easy, well-rounded accounts and descriptions for the reader who has little familiarity in the subject. And though she provides detailed descriptions of several species of mushroom, she repeatedly cautions against using the work as a definitive field guide, noting how many species can look similar but be vastly different and dangerous in composition. It is a light, enjoyable read, acting as a helpful introduction to the world of mushrooms, and a great aid for those who have an interest in incorporating mushroom knowledge into their manifesting practices. She provides several different spells and accompanying rituals as outlines to aid the reader in their own practices. This would be a wonderful coffee table book because of it’s easy-to-grasp informative writing and for the beautiful experience that it is simply to flip through the pages and see the artwork. It was an enjoyable read, and a peaceful one.
Mystical Mushrooms is a fabulously illustrated foray into the mysterious world of fungi. Split into different sections, we learn fun mushroom facts, explore the folklore stories that various countries have about mushrooms, and take a more in-depth look into a selection of them, with utterly gorgeous illustrations showing off the varieties within the species, before rounding off with some manifestation practise suggestions for different circumstances.
The book stresses from the start that it is not a field guide, nor should it be used as a check book for what’s poisonous or not, with extra heed taken to ensure the reader won’t go and harvest mushrooms to eat that they’re unsure of, explaining that it is a more whimsical look into the magic of mushrooms.
I had a lovely time reading it. I feel like I’ve learnt some fun facts, have a wider knowledge of mushrooms, their history, the way they work and spread, and where to look for certain types! Plus, the illustrations really make this book shine. It would make a gorgeous addition to any mushroom lovers shelf, or simply someone who wants to learn more about them!
Thank you to the publishers, and Netgalley, for the early copy to review.
This was a really interesting look at mushrooms and all the ways they’re significant: culturally, medicinally, scientifically, ecologically, and more. This is a great primer for anyone wanting to know more, and especially an interesting resource for creatives: I’ve read my share of fungus-related horror stories, and this book sheds light on some of those origins, as well as potential new ideas.
One really surprising fact that I learned was that Beatrix Potter was an accomplished and widely respected mycologist. I had no clue, and it makes me have a whole new appreciation for the fictional Eugenia Potter in “What Moves the Dead,” who is clearly an allusion/nod to Beatrix.
The section on individual mushrooms is shorter than expected, but interesting nonetheless. I can think of a few interesting mushrooms that weren’t included.
The end includes manifestations you can do involving mushrooms, and whether or not you believe in doing that, it was still interesting to read.
All in all I feel like I learned a lot that I wouldn’t have otherwise known, and am even left with some creative ideas.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
A whimsical and fascinating delight of a book. This book is a wonderful mix of scientific fact, history, mystery and magic. The title and cover enticed me to open it, the content had me hooked on reading it. It's beautifully illustrated, a book you could enjoy by looking at the pictures alone but you would be missing out on the science, history and mythology that makes this book stunning to both read and look at. The descriptions of edibility made me smile with their range from inedible to 'unknown but highly unlikely' to 'highly sought'.
There are repeated cautions not to eat wild mushrooms without being absolutely certain you know what they are. And requests to be respectful and sustainable when foraging. Many mushrooms are endangered and protected so be aware of what you are doing before picking anything in the wild.
Overall I loved this book and would happily dip into it time and time again
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book but did not receive any inducement to provide a positive review
🍄 “Mystical Mushrooms” by Aurora Kane
Neither plant, nor animal, mushrooms have long fascinated humankind. Some varieties provide nourishment, others - certain death. This book examines the role mushrooms have played in folklore and in cultures around the world. I could have done without the New-Agey mysticism at the end of the book, but this is one I'd pick up again and again just to gape at the gorgeous artwork.
This is a real treat for those who just like looking at these fabulous fungaloids.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing for sharing this lovely book.
This is exactly the kind of mushroom guide that was written for me. AND THE ILLUSTRATIONS. The illustrations alone have ensured that this will become a physical book on my shelves.
What really resonated with me about this book was that it wasn’t strictly trying to be a guide to identifying and foraging mushrooms. Instead, this book is much more about the history, magic, beauty, and folk connections of mushrooms. While the illustrations and information on each species could certainly help you identify some of these mushies in the wild, this book is not intended to be your go-to foraging guide. Instead, immerse yourself in the magic of mushies - this book is perfect for a day spent lounging with a cup of tea when you’re in need of a bit of whimsy.
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC of this book. I can’t wait to purchase a physical copy!
This started out very strong for me, encouraging us to ponder the wonders of the fungi kingdom through lenses of culture, history, spirituality, and science. However, the later pages about individual mushrooms lost me, as it repeatedly said things like "edible, but don't eat them", etc. It just really took me out of the book, as I thought it was pretty clear that the author's intent was to talk about symbolism and our connection with fungi... clearly stating that this wasn't a field guide - so why even have that entire section with vague identification (and "edible, but don't eat!")? It got repetitive and just lost my enthusiasm. I wish I could get a copy that just left that entire section out and focused on the human connection with fungi throughout time and in folklore.
A great beginner's guide to mushrooms and a fun mix of science, history, folklore, and new age magic, Mystical Mushrooms is perfect for those wanting to learn more about fungi. I love learning about mushrooms and this book did not disappoint.
While I like that this book is more introductory, I do wish some aspects were talked about more. It felt very much like we were just scratching the surface and we never went into too much detail. But, it did inspire me to do my own research after reading!
A perfect book to have on your shelf to lend out to friends and family or to keep on your table when guests come over. 3.5/5 stars rounded to 4. Thank you to Netgalley for the e-ARC.
Have fun with mushrooms!!! But what kind of fun, and what kind should you use?
Mystical Mushrooms: Discover the Magic & Folklore of Fantastic Fungi by Aurora Kane is a handy guide to the cultural value of various mushrooms and the myriad uses and cultural associations they have…particularly with (drum roll) MAGIC!!!
There are some wonderful and diverse photos of mushrooms in this book. Each of the dozens of mushrooms covered gets a wonderful piece of art.
Meanwhile, roughly half the book is dedicated to the history and myths of mushrooms in general, its importance in various countries, and the type of rituals you might want to use them for.
I thought this was a beautifully illustrated book paired with the insight on various types of mushrooms was a delight to read. It had a bit of humor but with the intention of educating readers as well.
I enjoyed the fairy references throughout as well as the intention setting near the end. I also appreciate the warnings throughout to be careful with touching or consuming without consulting a professional. I wasn't aware so many different mushrooms looked the same!
Lovely little read and amazing artwork! #MysticalMushrooms #NetGalley
I recently read this book. As a spiritual person, this opened my eyes to the history of mushrooms through folklore. Who doesn’t love learning about mushrooms and their connections to fairies 🧚♀️ , elves 🧝🏻♀️ , gnomes, and even to mysterious beings like Baba Yaga🧙♀️. Only giving a 4 star rating because for a little bit in the book I sort of had trouble keeping focus, but then I got back into it and the book has a lovely finish. Highly recommend for people who just want a refreshing, unique experience reading about mushrooms, and i’ll definitely be reading more books by the author!🍄
A beautifully illustrated and informative book on Mushrooms including history and it's links to events and folklore of history past, some super interesting facts I didn't know about like the links mushrooms had to witchcraft and witch-hunts. Definitely a book I will be wanting to revisit and re-digest over and over, if not just for the beautiful illustrations that come with the book.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Quarto for providing me with an ARC at my request.
I found this book okay. If it’s truly meant to be informative, then I would have to dock points from my review because the information provided is surface level at best. If it’s just meant to be a fun, quick read then I guess it’s fine.
Some of the writing is really clunky. Sentences either go on way too long or could use more detail. Some of the quips used throughout are cliche and, quite frankly, a bit annoying.
The art is lovely, though. The book is very beautiful to look at.
Received an arc from Netgalley for an honest review.
This was a gorgeously illustrated book. The drawings were artistic, yet realistic enough to properly tell what the mushrooms look like in person. It talked about the facts and folklore of many different mushrooms. I loved reading about the history of the different mushrooms, their facts on whether they are edible or not, and if they could be used for health benefits.
A beautiful introduction to mushrooms from a metaphysical perspective. Basically: is it edible, yes or no, manifestation properties associated with each mushroom, and a brief anecdote.
The introduction was as thorough as it needed to be, though repetitive at times, the illustrations were gorgeous, and most of all - it was a fun read.
What this was NOT: a mushroom and fungi identification book, look elsewhere for positive identification.
