Natthimmel is about a fourteen year old girl, Tilda, and her teenage anxiety. It's a nice book but I also found it to be fairly boring. Through most of it she's just building up the courage to meet new people and do new things, specifically getting into LARP with her new friend Jesper. I found most of the LARP storyline to be somewhat uninteresting. First there wasn't enough action and instead a whole lot of sewing, then the actual role-playing wasn't all that exciting to follow.
What I did like about this book was Tilda's relationships; losing a best friend, worrying over how much a new friend actually likes her, and trying to communicate with her little sister after years of being emotionally detached. I actually related to her in that I've also always been cautious, introverted and distant. Although, at her age I was a whole lot more boy crazy. It was nice to see her grow out of her fears and to see people from a different perspective - and that she was able to have a platonic friendship with Jesper.
I suppose it's a nice story for a young introverted teen dealing with adults' expectations. Tilda eventually learns that being herself isn't so scary, that everyone else isn't as confident as they seem, and that being alone is quite alright, and that it's never too late to try to connect with family members holed up in their rooms no matter how awkward it feels. Pleasant, but it didn't really hold my attention and I ended up skimming through.
Awww, this book was really cute, which I didn't expect. I just couldn't NOT pick up a book about LARPing, even though I haven't been into that for about ten years or more.
But, Tilda is a fourteen year old girl who decides to give LARPing a chance and I was once a thirteen year old girl doing the same, so naturally I could relate to her a lot. Not entirely, even though her self-conciousness still rings a bell with me a 26, I was annoyingly weird when I was into LARPing, looking down on everyone that wasn't and generally showing off my weirdness as much as I could. Whatever, I was 13, it's allowed. And of course, I too, alienated a former best friend with my new hobby. That part was a little too true.
There were some things that were hard to believe. What person who is into LARPing hasn't seen Lord of the Rings??? I know she must've been pretty young when the movies came out (when I was her age the movies were just being released), but come on. I also don't understand how she's able to sew all these cool clothes and afford to buy material for the chain mail and fake swords - I couldn't afford any of those things without my parents help. Maybe I'm nitpicking. I also found it hard to believe she didn't make a single other friend besides Jesper, despite being in a LARPing group with lots of people.
But it was a cute book and I very much enjoyed it. ^^
