Whitetail Rock #1

Whitetail Rock

Rate this book
Official Description: Nikhil “Nik” Larson is a snarky, dark-skinned adoptee from India who grew up in the Whitest Town in America. Back to visit his parents Nik meets Trooper Jurgen Dammerung, a blond, butch motorcycle cop who’s so hot he leaves a con trail wherever he goes.

Jurgen is the epitome of everything Nik hated about growing up the lone Indian boy among a town of white people. But Jurgen surprises him rather (ahem) pleasantly, in spite of — or because of — Nik’s attempts to needle him. By the end of his visit, Nik realizes he likes Jurgen. But Jurgen’s so not the relationship type.

Right?

Original Prompt:
Dear Author,
Those boots are hot, right? The veiny arms too. I bet he gets really sweaty riding that bike all day. mmmmhmmmm You can't see it in the pic, but I bet his hairy chest just glistens with it.

I would love a story about this cop. I think he's a bit demanding, some might call him an asshole. You can give me an HEA, but don't make my cop too nice.

Photo Description: From the toe of his polished boot to the dark glasses hiding his eyes, we are looking up at one very hot cop. He straddles his motorcycle, wearing snug blue uniform pants, a gun holster on his belt and black leather gloves. He's shirtless, and the cut of his muscles makes this a very good thing.

This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group's "Hot Summer Days" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

Catalyzed by her discovery of LGBTQ romance, Anne Tenino left the lucrative fields of art history, non-profit fundraising, and domestic engineering (in that order) to follow her dream of become a starving romance author. For good or ill, her snarky, silly, quasi-British sense of humor came along for the ride.

Anne applies her particular blend of romance, comedy, and gay protagonists to contemporary, scifi, and paranormal tales. Her works have won many awards; her novel, Frat Boy and Toppy, is frequently referred to as a gay romance classic; she’s been featured in RT Book Reviews magazine; she holds the position of VP of Programming at her local RWA chapter; and she’s achieved bestseller status on Amazon’s gay romance list.

Nik's a douche. A deluded, stupid, hostile little douche.

Making him the lead was probably a mistake, but must have been loads of fun to write—the lengths to which he goes in order to ruin his own happiness are incredible, and often funny.

Sadly, it seems only Julia Roberts can play a neurotic at all fetchingly—as in, without making you want to end her with a hatchet.

But, hey—the rest? Sparkling! Wonderful narrative voice, an impressively pure example of the prototypical romance, and a love interest who is, quite simply, a physical manifestation of ass-fucking, in jeans.

Seriously. He's Herr Fuckmenow.

Jurgen (I'm Just Going To Stand Here Being Hot For A Minute) Dammerung.

This is who Nik initially rejects to spite his own whatever.

You invite seething dislike anytime you write a character stupid enough to spurn the attentions of Fatherland's Pride 100% Pure Aryan Beef with Special Harley Davidson Sauce.

His fucking name is Jurgen Dammerung!

That's, like, almost exactly what it sounds like when you gag on a man's cock.

***

Even though Tenino didn't entirely get away with it here, the rest is quite staggeringly competent, and very funny to boot.

Make sure you are alone and have your favorite solo-happy-time accoutrement to hand as you hit the 80% mark.

Especially towels. You'll need them.

Lots and lots of towels.

Awwww, this was everything I was expecting and then some! Nik was just the epitome of snarkily adorable, and Jurgen was the epitome of sizzlingly mysterious.

It was so cute to meet Sam. His friendship with Nik is just the best! Reminds me of my friends from my hostel.

Though I've deducted one star because I feel that the author would've done an awesome job had it been a lengthier story.

This was a sizzling little number indeed. Apparently I need to read more Anne Tenino, because if this is any indication of what to expect in terms of writing quality and tangible chemistry between the characters, then I’m all in.

I liked the story setting and I greatly appreciated the diversity of the MCs, especially in terms of how their physical and cultural differences played into the evolution of their relationship.

As I said, the characters shared some smokin’ hot chemistry - seriously, YOWZA! - but I felt this was predominantly of a physical nature and I found myself wishing for more in terms of actual relationship development and feelings when all was said and done.

Only upon completion did I realise that there were more books in this series, so maybe that’s where I’ll find the relationship satisfaction I was craving here. At the very least, I'm excited to read Sam (the best friend's) story!

4.5 stars from me for this one, another really good, hot read from Anne Tenino, and FREE.

This was the story of Nik Larson, an snarky yet sensitive Indian adoptee and Jurgen Dammerung, a mountain of a motorcycle cop who is blond, butch and awesome!! They were sooo hot together!!

I liked that it also featured Sam from 'Too Stupid to Live' as Nik's best friend, and of course, as anyone who has read TSTL will know, Nik and Sam are very close, and tell each other everything, or mostly everything!!

Other readers have given really good reviews, so this one is going to be short and to the point - I loved it, and it will be another keeper on my kindle.

I have a addiction.

I feel completely compelled and helpless in the face of a free m-m romance books. I am drawn to them like a moth to a flame. I can't... stop... reading them!

On to the book at hand...

This was a quick, sexy, fun novella by Anne Tenino, who I've been meaning to read more of for some time. I liked that it explored the idea of race in the gay culture (albeit in a very passing manor in the context of a romance novel). I also have a mild sub-fetish with cops or law enforcement agents so this really hit a home run for me in that department. It was a bit short and lacking in some substance for me, hence 4 stars, but I almost want to bump it to 5 stars because it is free. An awesome free read.

4 Stars - ... lovely!

This was a romantic and cute M/M novella. Nik is a complicated, rather touchy, guy who has a hard time believing that Jurgen really want just him. Born in India and adopted as a toddler, he has always been different, now also a weird gay guy. Jurgen is the new sexy motorcycle police in the small town. He seems to be very attracted to Nik. A shameless flirt is he as well....

More content and soul than the cover would suggest. Seventy pages free to download. Well worth reading.

I LIKE - enjoyable shorty

3.5 Stars and plenty of reasons to read this one. But for the love of all that's hot and sexy, I can think of only one and his name is Jurgen and he looks like this...

He rides a Harley and screws like a machine. I also recall, between desperate panting and fanning of self that this is quite funny too. And it's free!!! Oh and I've read the follow up book which was pretty good too.

A fabulous free short about Nik, a graduate student, and Jurgen, a motorcycle cop. They meet when Nik and his friend Sam are visiting Nik's adoptive parents during a school break.

They start a blazing affair that goes from casual to intense but always passionate. This is very well written with some great MC's and a wonderful secondary character in Sam. Fun.

I will give you 10 reasons to read this book:

1) Porch sex.
2) Bathroom counter sex.
3) Office desk sex.
4) Post-testing bareback sex.
5) Leather motorcycle chaps (and matching gloves).
6) Handcuffs.
7) Sam.
8) Nik's snarkiness.
9) Jurgen. *SWOOOOOOOOON*
10) It's FREE. WHAT?!

Bonus reason: Ash would approve of Nik's reaction to being called "baby." *snicker*

I am a fan, Ms. Tenino. I am a fan.

My only major criticism is that I wanted some of Jurgen's POV, too. Because he is .

The name Jurgen was a turn-off for me. Plus I kept mentally adding the umlaut. Yes. I'm a weirdo like that. But it should be Jürgen Dämmerung.

Smutty and free. The book appealed to every one of my romance kinks, and the romance was interracial to boot (not something I commonly come across). This book would have been rated higher than 3 stars, but it wasn’t for two big reasons.

First reason: the main character

Nik wasn’t likable as I wanted him to be. I get his issues. I get his anger. But I couldn’t excuse him taking his anger out on undeserving Jurgen. Jurgen had been nothing but nice to Nik. Meanwhile, Nik was rude and selfish to Jurgen. Nik acted as if he was only the person in the whole world who had issues. Bitch, please. Get some perspective. The guy has a loving family, caring friends, and a decent job. I wished one of the characters would have told Nik to get the stick out of his ass and thrown a glass of cold water in his face for good measure.

I didn’t like how Jurgen was the only one of the two to face his issues (Jurgen has a fear of commitment). I was a little baffled at what Jurgen saw in Nik to love because I couldn’t see it. Love is blind, I guess.

Second reason: the ending

The ending was abrupt. The climax occurred at the last minute, and then it was over as quickly as it started. WTF? Where’s my falling action, and that’s not a proper dénouement.

Other reasons

I didn’t take off any points for these reasons but I thought it was weird how Nik was home with his family for a visit yet the reader really never got to meet his family. I didn’t mind that most of the sex scenes were fade-to-black; I did mind that a non-fade to black sex scene took place at Nik’s office at the university during business hours. Ew, the couple should have some respect for other people and found an isolated place to fuck.

What I Did Like

This quote:
“Sam. I've got news for you. Not every childhood trauma can be healed by finding the right penis." [said Nik]

Sam looked devastated. He opened and closed his mouth, eyes wide, then suddenly slumped back against the railing, unable to support himself anymore. "You mean," his voice was barely a whisper. "All those romance novels lied?”
LOL. Hey, a person can dream, can’t they? It was nice to see Nik could be humorous sometimes... in a blue moon. Anyway.

I also liked the college setting, particularly how Nik shared his frustration of being a TA to the reader. He sounded exactly like one of my college instructors.

Conclusion

I rate Whitetail Rock 3-stars for I like it. It could have been better book. It needed a few more rounds of editing. But as it is, the story was good and definitely hooked me into book 2.

Offered for FREE from the M/M Romance Group, Hot Summer Days event.

3.75 stars I'm not one of those girls who goes gaga for guys in uniforms, I may have some authority issues... but that picture... kinda makes me melt. So anyway. 3 stars for the story, 5 stars for the sex. Averaged out at 4 but I rounded down slightly because Nik is just so annoying. I never really liked him. I get that he's supposed to have issues but he was overly sensitive and immature the entire time, albeit pretty funny. But the sex, Hot Damn, the sex!

I can’t believe this is a freebie! Seriously, I loved it more than other books that I’ve paid way too much for!! Sooo, I’m actually reading these out of order. I just finished Too Stupid to Live and then discovered the Whitetail Rock series. Oops! So I already knew Nik, Jergen and Sam before reading this. I enjoyed finding out how Nik and Jergen met. And I totally fell in love with Nik. He’s goofy and adorable, just like Sam. I can totally understand why they are best friends. Loved the ending and can’t wait to move on to the next book!

So here's the thing, I hate reading m/f romance novels. Nine times out of ten the leading lady (or I usually refer to them as the 'simpering mess') is damaged emotionally, winey, brick wall building, self doubting with a stick up her ass while pleading "surely he couldn't be interested in little-old-me". Then they try to fight being rescued by a great big hunk of spunk who'll tell them what they should wear, when to leave the house or better yet "not to bother thinken' 'bout that stuff no more sweet lips. From now on you can come to me for all your needs". For me, the lead character Nik presents just like all these cliche chick lit female leads do, while the other lead storms his way into Nik's life. BUT WAIT!

The hot alpha in this story, Jergen, isn't a douche bag. He's clever enough to see past the adolescant self loathing behaviour which lead character Nikky painfully displays at every opportunity. Jergen is also horny/desperate enough to persue his lust for Nik. This is where the story comes alive. Despite all of Nik's above mentioned appalling character traits he somehow manages to shut his mouth and yields to Jergen's super hot, hotty hot hot antics.

The rest is fun and yes, hot.

I loved this book. It was funny and sweet. Nik and Jurgen were an intense couple. I loved how Nik would stand up to Jurgen acting like he wasn't interested and then Jurgen would do his sexy little growling or purring and Nik would just cave. I loved Jurgen's possessiveness and his determination to have Nik even though Nik thought he'd just be a one-night stand. And those fucking chaps?!?!?! Fuck, can you say HOT????

Beyond that, it was just such a sweet story how they both fell for one another. The only tiny problem I had was I felt like there was too much sex. At least for my liking. I'd rather have had a bit more conversations between them but that's just me.

Overall, I loved this little short and I'd love to see more of these two and what their relationship becomes later one. Recommended.

Endearingly funny. Nik is prickly and Jurgen is stalwart which if you're in his shoes and pursuing Nik is required. Very adroit handling of race and homosexuality in small town America from different viewpoints, but never heavy-handed or preachy. Quite clever.

Kudos to Sam, Nik's best friend. Dorky and adorable has a special place in my heart.

4.5 stars. The main character's lack of self-esteem and chip on his shoulder about his race was a little taxing but I just loved this story. It was well written, tight and smooth. The sex scenes were varied and very hot. The ending was so sweet I teared up a little.

I was disappointed when I realized this was over 20K words because I wanted to give it an A rating at BER. I hadn't had one in so long. Nik is a English postgraduate with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He grew up in a white town, the son of a white couple adopted form India. The only brown kid in town and later, the only gay kid which some were quick to take advantage of. He's home for a visit when he sees uber-alpha state trooper Jurgen. When he flirts, to his surprise Jurgen makes a move which only ticks Nik off when he thinks Jurgen just wants the novelty of an Indian guy for sex. However Jurgen doesn't give up and Nik gives in. Before long Jurgen is traveling 2 hours to spend weekend with Nik, but Nik still doesn't want to admit that it might be more, nor does Jurgen say anything, which eventually leads to a misunderstanding and revelations. Nik was a great character. He starts with a real chip and Jurgen's behaviour make him have to reassess whether his life was so awful and if it's not time to put it behind him. As well the sexual stalking by Jurgen was oh so very hot and sexy and Nik's internal babble as he tries to convince himself that this is nothing and that Jurgen's not even his type was adorable and funny. This little interaction with is friend Sam was typical:

"He made me pick a safe word." Nik peeked between his fingers. Sam's mouth was hanging open.
"Oh." Sam's voice was a whisper. More of the throat clearing. "What did you pick?"
Not the question he'd been expecting. Nik looked up at Sam from under his hand.
"Lemonade."
"Lemonade?" Nik nodded. "Do you like lemonade?"
"Does it matter? Yes, I like lemonade."
"Shouldn't you have picked something you didn't like, to make sure there were no, um
inadvertent exclamations at an important moment?"
He dropped his hand and stared at Sam. "Who screams out 'lemonade' in the middle of
sex?"
Sam blushed. Nik was momentarily grateful for his dark skin. "You'd be surprised," Sam mumbled.

Yes, they didn't talk and that would have saved them some issues, but they were pretty typical guys I think. This is a super read and seriously, for free I expect an okay read, but this surpassed that. I can definitely see myself rereading this and I'll be checking out other work by the author. So I'm giving it my own A rating here. :-)

I really enjoyed this free story written for the m/m group. The premise is basically that when you are different (in this case a young man from India adopted as a baby living in rural America) it is often hard not to see prejudice where in fact there is none.

Nik at first believes that Jurgen just sees him as a novelty and he must get over his sensitivity before he can appreciate what Jurgen is offering. Great read!

I can't believe I did not read this sooner. What a fun story. I loved seeing bits of Sam (he is the reason I stopped Too Stupid to Live and went back to read this) and his hopeless romantic self but Nik and Jurgen? Goodness those two are fun, sexy and oh so swoony. This was such a fun read. Off to read the next one!

Whitetail Rock tells the short story of Nik, a snarky Indian boy from the whitest town in USA, and Jurgen, a droolworthy cop who does not let snark and neuroses put him off. Nik has understandable issues, and Jurgen infinite patience, and the story is funny, sexy and entertaining enough.
