A thought-provoking story about death, divine justice, and what it truly means to get a second chance at redemption.
Ryley's father is a murderer... He admires his father.
As an eighteen-year-old man, Ryley's time in the boys' youth shelter is over. The story begins the night he is kicked out. He discovers a piece of paper in his pocket, which is his father’s Penn Brook Penitentiary profile. In an unfamiliar city with nothing to his name and nowhere to go, Ryley must find his father for help. Along the way, he’ll befriend a furry companion named Kaia, a girl named Addison Gray, a former youth shelter resident whose father shares the same address as his own, and a street-wise young man named Lucas. Together, the four journey across the city, all-the-while being chased by Lester Gibbs's men, who somehow find them at every turn. In the process, Ryley will rescue his captured friend, uncover a traitor amongst them, and face an ultimate test to understand the true cost of revenge.
And the thing is, I can't really explain why. The ending really changed things, but not in a bad way. I wish things got expanded on a little more, but the story wouldn't work if it did. Glad I won this on Goodreads.
The first half of the book was really intriguing. I found myself a little confused and not understanding certain aspects in the story. Towards the end of the book everything falls into place perfectly. It’s very well written but the reason I knocked off stars was because it turned into something I was not prepared for. I do think people with religious trauma should proceed with caution. Other than that it’s action packed, has likable characters, and is one of those books you want to digest in one sitting and probably will!
This book was really good until the last few chapters. Then it became unhinged and went completely off the rails. I’m not sure what the point was in ruining a decent story. It seemed like the author couldn’t decide on how to end the book, so the put in an odd and strange twist.
Overall good story. Some of the writing/dialogue could use some editing for clarity but it didn’t really detract from the point of the book. I wish it wouldn’t ended so abruptly though.
I had some trouble getting into this book. It wasn’t my type of book and I found it hard to follow and felt the ending didn’t feel right. Thanks for the free book.
