Stevenson ; edited and arranged by Marie Clothilde Balfour. 1906 Stevenson, Margaret Isabella Balfour, -.
This is the second volume of Margaret Stevenson's letters to her family in Scotland. It opens with her outward journey from Plymouth in December 1890 and ends with the sad aftermath of her son's death four years later. Her bright, curious, and amused intelligence stands out on nearly every page. We learn a lot about Samoan people and their culture but also about other people and places she visits in the Pacific, as well as the many characters who entered their lives during those busy years. She has the eye of an anthropologist and it is interesting to compare her account with those of Louis and other members of the Stevenson household.
