This book is a good video guide for beginners. It focuses on the gear heavily and most beginners aren’t going to spend that much. The video editing section was a bit short and the social media options were dated as far as use.
This isn’t a detailed book on videoing different genres. You’re told to consider the genre before making it in the planning process.
Basic tips on planning, scripting, location but for me, there was too much on things that I really wouldn’t do. For instance, how many people go ‘scouting for locations’. Many beginners wouldn’t either.
I’m not certain that the book has the right target audience in that he is talking about considering outdoor lighting, location scouting, script preparation and then social media for viewing. It’s all correct and makes sense, but there are easier ways to work. How many beginners are going to go out, scouting and buying external lighting which needs to be pretty powerful. He talks about target audience for videos and I think that he needs to rethink his target audience for this book.
Very quick gloss over gear. Missed out wireless mics and Action Cams but included phone. No actual recommendations for any gear.
Beginners need to be helped with recommendations and ideas. Not given lists of gear available. In the camera section, not one recommendation. Just a list. In the lighting section, there was a little more help with where to put them.
I would suggest looking at this book and expanding it into different genres of video with practical suggestions. For instance, a Vlog would be difficult to do with a big camera so what to use? How to make a review …. gear. How to make the video. How to make an advert … gear. Different approaches. There’s a ton of info that could be added to this book with maybe some recommendations.
When many videographers review a camera, they often go though everything and then recommend some settings for different scenarios. That kind of thing is missing from the book.
The cost of this book on Kindle is relatively high and if I’m honest, I expected more from it. I’m not a beginner but I felt that this was a struggle to keep reading.
I thought that this would be a guide for beginners, but what I found was not a guide for amateurs but a fairly detailed guide for filmmakers and those wanting to work professionally. The information provides overviews and insights into all aspects of video making, but much is beyond the needs, or budgets, of the hobbyist. Having said this, there is much that is applicable to those with less lofty aspirations. The book is clear, well written, and allows the reader to delve into specific sections they are interested in.
Due to the rapidly changing world of technology, sections of the book will require regular updating, but this is a good handbook for those wanting to progress their insights and skills in video making.
It’s very concise and easy to read, covers the basics. If you’re only thinking about making videos, I’d recommend the book instead of reading a bunch of articles elsewhere. It’s well-structured and has every aspect of what goes into making a video. I think this book can help beginners understand what they need to improve to get better, as sometimes we know something is off, but we can’t figure out what. It’s a good book to start learning video making. If you’ve been shooting videos for some time but only used your instincts, this book can be a helpful resource too.
I received an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I have been looking for a practical book to have available to high school students, and this is it. The advice is straightforward and free of the anecdotal information I have found in other books. This is definitely going ot be included in my classroom library for video production and television broadcast students.
This book is a must read for everyone who is interested in the growing trend of video making, Whether you are a beginner or a professional, the information on this book will significantly add to your knowledge. I believe that everything is covered. I like the chapters on lightning, settings, location, subject, budget, equipment, and scheduling.
