The Songs of Draiden #1

The Song of the Fae

Rate this book
A human with secret magic, a fae prince mourning his lost mate, and a dark power threatening to tear the kingdom apart.

In the land of Cresea humans are forbidden from wielding magic, ruled by the corrupt and powerful fae. Kiera uses her power to heal sparingly, knowing the price if she’s caught but unable to resist the force ever-present beneath her skin.

When Dorian, the Fae Prince of Cresea, discovers her secret and offers her a deal, Kiera sees no option but to accept, grasping at his offer to learn magic even as she fears the secrets he’s hiding, and why he so desperately needs her help to save the kingdom from a wasting darkness.

Despite her lingering distrust of his motives, Kiera cannot deny the attraction growing between them as Dorian teaches her to harness her magic. But when Dorian’s secrets come to light they prove powerful enough to change everything she thought she knew about herself, her past, and her building relationship with Dorian. As darkness descends, Kiera must use all of the power of her soul, if not in defense of her kingdom or her prince, then for herself.

In her debut novel, The Song of the Fae, E.H. Jahr has woven a captivating fantasy romance about the power hidden in our hearts and the strength it takes to triumph over fear.

The character development Kiera is going through is amazing.
The pacing keeps increasing and towards the end the events roll over a bit, but somehow it still fits.
I hope it continues because I too want to know what Kiera was shown at the end.
Dorian is a bit too heroic for me personally, but I enjoy reading more about how much he understandably adores Kiera.
The story itself is really unusual and I really enjoyed reading it, thanks for that!

The Song of the Fae ♦ E.H. Jahr | Review

Actually I shouldn’t have searched, I have more than enough books on the shelf. But on BookSirens I couldn’t avoid The Song of the Fae. The blurb was just too appealing that I couldn’t resist.

The Song of the Fea

The Song of the Fae ♦ E.H. Jahr

Opinion

When Kiera moves to a new town with her father, she has to come to the aid of two residents immediately. This tells Dorian, the Prince of the Fae, that Kiera has the gift of healing<.
That was also the moment when the main protagonist annoyed me. Her inherently aggressive attitude toward Dorian makes her very unsympathetic to me, for he respectfully met her by offering to train her gift.
If she had reacted more cautiously towards him, her sympathy points with me would not have dropped so quickly. But this forced drama obviously always has to be with New Adult, because that’s the age bracket I put the book in.

But during the storyline, Kiera regains my sympathies. She may seem fragile, but inside she’s a really strong young woman.
At first, Dorian’s attachment to her seems too intentional, at times it felt like an obsession. But E.H. Jahr can steer everything in the right direction with her storytelling and the secrets that everyone carries with them result in a coherent plot.
The dangers to which the kingdom is exposed are also well interwoven with the protagonists and the twists were chosen at the right moments for me and were not predictable. Terrific!

I liked the author’s writing style, it drew me into the story from the start. This one got better and better from page to page. The pace didn’t get me out of breath now, but it held me captive.
I liked that the author answers many of the questions that arise quickly as the story progresses. Even if one or the other question is still unanswered, but there must still be some material for the next volume.

Conclusion

I thought the tale was good overall, and I liked the writing approach. Even though I initially thought Kiera to be a little unpleasant, I felt completely absorbed in the story and became attached to the characters! I now only have to wait for the following installment.

If there's one genre I'd call my favorite genre it's romantasy. A romance with fantasy elements. Vampires, werewolves, fae, witches, warlocks, whatever. As long as there is a little more to the romance than just person meets person and the process of them falling in love. So, when I saw this book, starring a girl wanting to make the world a better place and a prince, on BookSires I thought this book would be perfect for me.

It's hard to write this review and mostly because the click not being there is mostly a feeling and not so much an objective observation. I didn't really feel this book and I don't entirely know if it's simply something personal or maybe an issue other people might also have with this book. I think it's because in the end the book tried to be a little too much at once which meant that the individual parts didn't really get the chance to shine.

This book is described as a romance, but in a way it feels like the focus is not on the romance. There is an instant connection between these characters, but there are too few emotional conversations and moments where they connect on a non-physical level to really feel the sparks they are feeling. And I think that's partly because the book is also focussing on a curse that needs to be broken and political issues in- and outside the border.

And because of all those issues and all of them happening at different times in the book the story feels a little all over the place and lacking direction. The plot is great, the characters have potential and I certainly think that this is something that will capture a lot of readers, but I think for me the story would have worked better if the author paced things a little differently. I think for me this entire first book could have focussed on the romance and then revealing the curse and history as finale.

But, if you want an entertaining, quick read with a touch of romance, some politics and loads of magic you might give this book a chance. Reading is, after all, a very personal experience!

Thank you to the author and BookSirens for an ARC of this book. I received a copy for free and was invited to share my honest opinion.

I enjoyed this book. The writing was much stronger than a lot of ARCs I’ve read recently and read much more like the popular novels of the genre, which I think the author should be really happy about. The premise drew me in and I thought the world building was particularly effective. I liked the fae/human element and the political tension between the two factions. The issues the kingdom was facing were realistic without getting boring or overly complicated. I did feel that Dorian’s obsession/desire for Kiera was a bit sudden/unexplained/unexpected at the beginning but the author does a good job of clarifying things - I quite liked the way this was done, with the reader gaining understanding alongside the MC. I didn’t see the twists coming, which I thought was great. I did take issue with the fact that the age gap between the MCs is weirdly big and actually explained in detail - twice! I know the fae male/human female seems to be a popular trope but a 47-year age gap is weird - especially when we’re talking “we met when you were fourteen and I was sixty-one”. Obviously there is some clarification further on in the story and to some extent I was able to ignore the issue, but even so, I find it weird when this kind of relationship is romanticised. Why could they not have just been of a similar age?

I have to say, I felt that this book got better as it went on. Particularly in the first few chapters there were several parts where the story could have benefitted from greater depth- it almost seemed a bit rushed? As if the author didn’t want to spend the time really establishing the characters/situation and instead push on into the next event - for instance when Kiera first arrives at the palace, her opportunity to explore seemed to be cut short - and then the conversation with Dorian is too. Instead of going into depth about the palace/reasons for her being there, the author seems to be finding ways to avoid it and it seems a bit clipped and awkward. She gets annoyed when he won’t tell her why she’s there and just goes off to bed - but we don’t find out how she’s feeling/what happens afterward; the next scene begins as she’s waking up! It’s very sudden and the impression it leaves is a bit disjointed.

In a similar vein, there were also parts left unexplained/not expanded on that kind of irritated me - for instance the portal scene - but given the way the story ends, perhaps this is leaving space for it to be explored in a future sequel? I hope so, because I’d like to know what happens! Despite this, I did enjoy the ending and thought it was well done.

The parts I wasn’t so fond of included the game of Higher or Lower that Dorian invites Keira to play in Chapter 10, which was a bit of a disappointment when something more adventurous could have been invented - except for the J/Q/K order, it’s just a normal card/drinking game - I’d expect faeries to play something more interesting! The book was a bit more spicy than my personal preference. I definitely found a few scenes really awkward, where they were having a conversation which then was cut short and changed into a pretty graphic sex scene. I found it really quite odd - but I do appreciate that it’s a personal preference! There are a few inconsistencies too; a misspelling of Keira on p.15 that I would have expected an editor/proofreader to have picked up on, and on p.81 palace is misspelled as “place” (at least im assuming this is the case, from context). Also, on p.174 the story says there are three sisters in the legend in Song of the Fae (the book within the book), but on p.176 it speaks about 4 sisters. It’s probably just a mistake but again it’s an inconsistency that should have been picked up. The other issue I noted was in Chapter 6, where Kiera gets very cross all of a sudden. It seems a bit of an overreaction given that she’s at the palace as a guest and is being treated well, and is supposedly scared of, or at least intimidated by the fae. It struck me as odd that she would behave this way in this situation.

Overall I thought this was a good story and I enjoyed the writing style. I felt really immersed in the world and I connected with the characters even if I found Kiera a bit annoying at first! With a few tweaks I think this book could be brilliant and I’d be interested in reading a sequel if the author writes one.

I think you’ll enjoy this book if you like:

Kiera moved with her dad into a small town as a baker, but after two locals needed help, her healing skills were discovered by Prince Dorian. Their first meeting was unremarkable, except that Kiera was belligerent. All her petulant questions left me disliking her. Why? Prince Dorian offered her training (despite the laws against humans learning magic), money to take care of her dad, and respect if she just helped him a little. It sounded like a deal overwhelmingly in her favor. Why wasn’t she eager to help?

She is an interesting creature. I keep thinking Kiera is a fragile girl, then she fights off a monster from the woods. It is explained later, and I get the idea her life is a fiction. Have you ever pondered the thought experiment about the tree falling in the forest? Would it make a sound if you were not around? When Keira is absent, her family is absent, and Dorian cannot find them when he investigates. But boy is she opinionated, so when she discovers that she is fated to Dorian, and her memories don’t match theirs, we have a lulu moment. Kiera denies, denies, denies, and is defiant that she is being compared to the Kiera they know, a fictional woman in her eyes. Fiona rolled her eyes. “You do make denial an art form.”

On Dorian’s side, he thought that after years of searching for his fated mate, that finding her would solve all his problems magically. Oops. Kiera avoids him but wants to help win against the spreading destruction of crops and forest. Meanwhile, he is trying to hide the massive shipments of grain and other edibles, but the movement of troops through the fae villages is creating the fear he wanted to avoid. Humans blame the fae for hording all the food. Excellent world-building details!

But… I am tired of magic only working well when enraged. Keira trains and trains to understand her physical and magical skills, but she only seems to have the power when under a fit of anger?

The theme:

===============

The story revolves around a dying earth, like the movie Nausicaa of the Wind, where magic and nature are being replaced by desert.

This mirrors the loss of memory, the loss of control, and the feelings that need to be overcome:

—————

I don’t care how you see it.” Kiera sighed and tried to ease the tension from her shoulders. “You look at me and you see the woman you used to love, but she’s gone.”

This story is a journey of empowerment against the dark forces out there that want to take all of your sense of self away.

THe Magic System:

===============

“Faeries inherited their magic by birthright; mages sold their souls to demons for it.” Good against evil? The Fae are depicted as the stewards of the earth, which makes me think about how poor human stewardship has been…

“You wait for some sign that you are good enough, some proof that you belong in your role. It will not come. You belong when you decide you belong.”

Tropes:

============================

• Dating in the secret garden
• Almost doing the deed
• Teenage awkward attempts at a relationship
• Steamy
• Swooning over the competent woman
• Novice girl (I know; I know; this conflicts with trope above) saved by doting lover

===========================
Characters:

=================

• Prince Dorian— The king in all but name, since he is unmarried. Absolutely the perfect imagined sweet lover, gahh.

• Eric—General of the fae forces and Prince Dorian’s advisor
• Penelope—her caretaker
• Kiera— the (presumably) human healer conscripted by Dorian to help in something
• Liam — Eric’s fated
• Raashen--evil. Wants to steal her power.

============================
In all honesty, I just could not get into the story until after the first 50%. The plot was better than the characters or romance, but that could be due to my own biases. I don't like dual POV. I don't like Kiera's ping-ponging desires. The written tone or voice doesn't match how steamy the novel is (surprise!). And I don't like reading about someone's training. For the rating, though, only the mismatch between voice and steaminess mattered in the scoring, and the extended areas of boredom for me.

You may like this much better, so ignore the rating and read a sample.

I could not finish this book fast enough. Unfortunately, not in a good or exciting way.

The Song of the Fae is the debut novel of E. H. Jahr. It is about a young woman who hides an unknown power in a country where humans are not allowed to practise magic. She is discovered and instead of a trial, she is given a deal by the kingdom’s prince; Help him save his kingdom and she will not face any charges.

Sounds like a fair deal, yes?

Mix in some hidden secrets, mysterious powers trying to keep them apart and some spice and we have ourselves a great fantasy novel. It sounded like a promising novel just up my alley.

To my great sadness and disappointment, this book did not deliver on it’s promise. The writing is immature, with a lot of telling and very little showing. The main character is flat with limited characteristics and the ones she does have, revolve around being obstinate and refusing to make decisions. And then being obstinate about people making decisions for her. While that would be good negative traits for a character, we get no inner monologue or get to take part of her feelings and thoughts about her situation. We are constantly told she feels things, but never shown these feelings. The character arc for her is also mostly non-existent. We get no emotional development or growth throughout the book. There is some attempts toward the end of the book, but we are not part of her development as a character. The FMC remains a sullen person who is upset that she is not part of the knowing, when she constantly refuses to make any decisions herself.

All this makes for a flat world and flat characters with very little depth. The story was unable to keep my attention and the stakes were never properly set. The MMC that was supposed to be this mysterious, dark skinned fey or fairy who kept hinting to the FMC being something more than she believed, and it just didn’t deliver. The part about being mysterious just came out as irritating.

For most of the book, nothing happens. The stakes are non-existent until two-thirds of the book. During this time, the FMC just wander about the palace, with a prince that pops in and out and being “mysterious”.

It was clear that this novel was supposed to hit onto some heavy topics and unfortunately this did not deliver. The characters have a few fights about the running of the kingdom and the FMC brings up points about how the humans of the world is being oppressed by the fae, by not getting the funding they are due and being limited in their access to food, education, and trade. These are great topics to bring up in any novel to address, yet the delivery of them fell flat. It was very much the case of “humans are oppressed” “no they are not, I’m a good leader” “Yes they are” “Oh there must be corruption”, and voila, the prince finds corruption.

This book seemed to have a great promise and the stakes hinted at in the blurb showed that a great story was in the making. Unfortunately, the author was unable to properly deliver on both the promise and the stakes. I feel that in order to capture me as a reader, the author needs to work on her structure, characters and tension.

I personally did not enjoy this book but that is only my opinion. If you enjoy easy reads with minimal effort along with ample descriptions of clothes and places, then this book is for you.

I have received this book as an advanced review copy for free. Receiving this book for free have in no way, shape or form affected the honesty of this review.

----------

The world-building was intriguing and I loved the legend of how the faeries came about. I did wish that more explanations were given for the legend. What was the relationship between the two ancient beings? How were they connected to Kiera? I was curious and really wanted to know more.

Character-wise, I loved the diversity. Seeing all the wonderful descriptions of olive and tanned skin and, eyes of various colours, etc. put a smile on my face whenever I come across these descriptions. In terms of the main characters, Kiera and Dorian, there were both things that I liked and dislike about them.

Kiera has an interesting character. She is the female main character and yet, her personality is not one that can be easily liked. I loved this about her because not every character has to be liked for them to be the protagonist of a story. She was made to sound like a fragile girl until her identity was revealed and suddenly, all of her out-of-character reactions made sense. We also get to see her growth in handling her magic and learning combat through training.

However, she had a few traits that remained before and after her identity has been revealed. One of these traits was being opinionated. No matter what, she had to have a say in things and I have a love-hate relationship with this trait of hers. She had experienced the hardships that the humans have been going through under the rule of the fae and so I strongly understand her sentiments. I loved that she was sticking up for her people but I was also hoping that she would try to view both sides of the situation rather than being biased.

Another trait that Kiera had was her wishy-washy attitude. When she learned what Dorian was to her, she denied their connection. She strongly denied their bond in every scenario to the point that even Dorian's sister, Fiona, remarked that she made denial look like an art. Although she vehemently denies their relationship, she continued to be with Dorian, have intimate moments with him and stay at his palace despite being given numerous opportunities for her to just up and leave.

For Dorian, he believed that rescuing his mate would be the antidote to all his problems. He was doting and loving but he had not given any explanations when he offered Kiera an opportunity to learn how to control her magic. Keeping secrets backfired on him whether with his mate or with his kingdom. However, he has shown a strong potential to grow from his mistakes and I'm really hoping to see him improve.

Throughout the book, it had been explained in great detail that Kiera was made to undergo an intense training period to control and hone her powers. It was described that as her healing powers were of elemental origin, she had the magic to manipulate the nature around her. She could be defensive but can also go on the offensive. Yet, most of the moments where Kiera was shown to use her magic were during her fits of anger. I wished that more moments were given where Kiera is seen using her magic like it was second nature - whether through performing mundane tasks or even just practising her magic.

Overall, this was a comfortable read and the pacing was great. The scenes flowed nicely and carried the story forward in a smooth direction. I'm looking forward to future installations from this author.

***I received an ARC of this novel through BookSirens, thank you a ton! This has not impacted my review in any way**

*NO SPOILERS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS REVIEW*

"Love is devotion. Love is duty.Love is a choice.”

So I saw this ARC description on Booksirens and thought Id give it a go. Sure, the name dorian immediately captivated me, but the story is entirely its own. Sure, at first it kinda of seemed like it held essences of a Maas novel, but the story quickly spun into its own adventure. The writing...well, you must forgive it, it is an introductory novel after all. I felt like the descriptions were great in some places, mainly when there was character monologue or character development, but not so much in the descriptions. The descriptions of places and events were a bit too cluttered. Additionally, the pacing of this novel was off. Some scenes were too slow and too lengghty, and some were extremely short or cut short for no reason, the time shifts were...odd. The the ending was super quick, hardly a good climax that the book was building towards, in my opinion. But, I think this would be cool to watch in a movie, for thats how some of the scenes seemed, like they were out of a fairytale movie. i would have also liked to learn more about the world, and just...have more backstory and such, before some of the events.

Kiera...is an interesting character. She seemed kind, and innocent and is just trying to deal with everything that has been through at her. But her indecision and then too quick decisions make me a bit irritated. I feel like this is a fault of the writing though. One sentence she has her mind set on one thing, then the very next she changes her mind. But nevertheless, you do root for her to have a happy ending. Or at the least, know what the heck to do about everything.

HOnestly Prince Dorian saved this book, as he always does AHHA. I loved him the moment he was introduced. He is dashing, he is daring, he is loyal, and fierce and unyielding. He would do anything for those he loved. He would sacrifice himself in a minute if it meant buying more time for others. Dorian is the real deal. What I wouldnt give for a man like Dorian, mmm..

Alright, remember, this is all my opinion. if you want your own, read the book when it comes out!

E. H. Jahr is a very talented writer; the prose was strong and enjoyable to read, the premise was compelling, and the story kept drawing me in. The world that The Song of the Fae exists in was so fascinating to me, especially the tale of how the fae originated. I only wished that more time was spent exploring this world, maybe through more of Keira’s life in the village. I wanted to know so much more about human-fae interactions, history, politics, legends, etc.

Characters: I loved to see the diversity in the characters. The descriptions of characters of color were great, and it was awesome that a gay couple was the example of a healthy fae relationship.
The most vivid aspect of the story is Keira, the main character. Many of her decisions seem contrary or at odds, some of which are reconciled further in the story. It was confusing, and sometimes frustrating, but mostly makes sense as more is revealed. This did make it challenging to relate to her. I think her character development was great, I only wish that her character was explored more in the beginning so that her change and development was clearer.

Overall, this was a very pleasant and entertaining read. The pacing of the story remained consistent and there was never a dull moment. It made for a fast, enjoyable read. I’m looking forward to more from Jahr!

I got to about 33 or so percent when I realised I wasn’t taking anything in and I wasn’t really interested. Not the characters, plot, world-building, anything could really get me into the book. Unfortunately, skimming ahead didn’t really do anything for me, so dnf it is.

I don’t have much to say about the characters because I didn’t feel like I knew them. The writing’s partially at fault. It’s also due to the pacing. It was incredibly fast at the beginning and then slowed down, then went fast and back and forth. That didn’t give me the time I needed to figure out the characters’ personalities or the world-building because I kept trying to catch up with the pace.

I think I can tell you like two things about Kiera (well, three if you include her name). One, that she has a father. I have no idea if she talks to him after she goes to the palace. Or if she ever sees him again. And two that she’s able to wield some type of healing magic that was probably explained as she grew more experienced.

I also don’t really have a lot to say about Dorian because he wasn’t exactly memorable to me. He didn’t feel like he was a Fae character. He felt more like a character who simply happened to have pointed ears and could use magic. I know I’m fairly new to the Fae genre but I don’t think that’s how it should be?

I received an ARC for an honest review.

This is a very difficult review to write. I love fae fantasy and romance combined with mates, politics, and magic - this was supposed to be my jam. But this book did not click with me honestly. It started out well with Kiera with her secret power and the sudden appearance of the Fae prince who then took her away. The side characters were also very interesting.

The plot contains lost love, politics, recognition of hidden magic, romance, mystery, and fantasy - everything to keep the reader entertained. But I couldn't connect with any of the characters, the pace was fast at the beginning and slowed down a bit which bored me, and then sped up at the end with so many things happening to end the story. Because of the difference in the pace of the story, I couldn't connect with any of the characters, the worldbuilding was not good and I felt bored.

The sex scenes were good though. But there was no chemistry between the hero and heroine. The writer meant us to experience various emotions throughout the story, especially romance but I just couldn't connect with it.

The story has potential. Maybe people who like a fast-paced fae fantasy might like this one.

Despite problems with the main characters, I enjoyed this book! Thanks to the author and BookSirens for the ARC. I didn’t care that much about Keira, mostly because I didn’t understand any of her thought processes. She was judgmental and aggressive; she never tried to see Dorian’s side of things and demanded that the humans were being mistreated but never did anything about it. Despite her misgivings, she continued to stay in the castle because she was drawn to Dorian, and then beat herself up about it. Just trust your instincts and make a real decision already! Meanwhile, Dorian was described as charming but never actually did anything charming.

Still, I liked the other characters, specifically Fiona, Erik, and Liam, enough to keep reading. I was engaged in their world and its politics, although these were complicated enough that they could have been explained in more detail. There was certainly space for this, as the first half of the novel dragged. All the action was stuffed into the second half. Nevertheless, I want to know what happens, so I’ll keep an eye out for the sequel.

I enjoyed Dorian and Kiera’s story and look forward to future installments by this author.

Here’s what I enjoyed most about the book:

-the plot itself (it feels fresh and exciting)

-the steam (it’s there but it doesnt overshadow the story)

-the world (in fantasy novels, sometimes it’s hard to keep track of names and places because they are, well fantasy, but it was easy with this one

Here’s what I disliked (but obviously not enough to lose a star):

-sometimes Dorian felt a little flat. There’s one chapter in his POC and all the others are in Kiera’s so I’m not sure why we only got that one glimpse into his mind

-occasionally I wanted to shake Kiera but her actions and feelings are also really important to true story

-I had a hard time nailing down a time frame for this book. At first it seems a bit medieval but there are times when the characters say “okay” which feels way more modern

Overall, read it and be glad that you did. I received and arc for my honest review.

Wow! Great book! I really enjoyed reading it!

It is fluid and you are just absorbed in the flow. Not the usual plot! I reall found it interesting.

Dont wait a lot of steam its mentionned high level but this is an adventure book and it has enough adventure in it. I found the plot unusual and surprising so I enjoyed it a lot! There was some confusion in me what happend based as described by the Fates close to the end but guess more to come on the next?

Extra point it has an ending but guessing book two will bring another pair into the picture?

The only thing Id change is the cover. This book is more intriguing than the cover shows and honestly I might not have picked it up is not reading the plot as it was recommended based on reading history.

For a debut novel this was very well done. One thing I look for is maturity in writing. As a reader I came in to this novel assuming that the writing would be good but young. Boy was I wrong. There was a maturity to the story telling that made me want to keep going.

Now to the actual story. I loved the flow of the writing. I like the story was set up in a way that made you want to try to solve the puzzle before the characters. BUT it also endeared you to them as well because the story felt smooth and real. It wasn’t forced. Even if I would t have known it was supposed to be a part of a series, it set up for a nice ending while still leaving a lot of unanswered questions. No cliff hangers but a good amount of “okay, what’s next!?!” I like that in a book.

Overall, it was well written, left you wanting more without feeling frustrated about wanting more, and gave a happy ending without being sappy.

Most of the time I enjoy a dual POV, at least if it is well written, which I feel the author of this novel has managed.

Good, spicy steam is also something that I very much appreciate (to me, a physical relationship is so much more than just sex, and I feel the reader misses out on so much of the relationship between the characters when the intimate scenes fade to black).

My favourite romantasy tropes are fae and slow-burn enemies to lovers, and because of this, I would have liked the romance to be more slow-burn than it is in this novel. Still good, but... Add bantering between the characters as well, and the deal is sealed.

I prefer series over standalones, because the plot is always better developed when you have more time to do so, and to me, the plot was a bit too rushed.

I read this copy as an arc for an honest review, so here it is.

When I started I didnt really know what to think of it especially when Kiera tends to leave takes steps to do just that only to turn around. This happened a little too much to my taste. But when you keep reading you start to understand why, this why is the same reason I find the start a little off.

After this the it went well, just a few this here and there that are more of personal taste than an error. I flew through the pages towards the end.
I did think the end was a little rushed, I would not have mind to read an extra 100/200 pages.

With more pages, taking a little more time to explain and go through an event plus a little less I am leaving, and I am not would have earned 5 starts.

A different way of looking at the fae; they are not the usual tricksters, but beings with heightened strength and the ability to cast magic. The FMC finds herself thrust into this world when she is caught using magic - something that only the fey or licensed practitioners can weild.

The romance is gentle, filled with a heat of unexpected passion that soon makes sense. Almost reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast, but the twist... Well I certainly wasn't even expecting it! But it was definitely the correct narrative choice.

The prose are lovely and descriptive without being too verbose. Scenes flow nicely and carry the story well, giving a true sens of the world and the characters we follow.

⭐ 4.5

Kiera, a human healer, needs to keep her healing capabilities secret since humans aren't permitted to be healers, only the fae. When she comes to Prince Darian's attention, he realizes that she is his fated mate. The humans who are under his protection, haven't been receiving their shipments of grains and foods from him and are also suffering from crop fields that are being destroyed.

Prince Darian needs Kiera's help, and she doesn't trust him, even though he has been nothing but straightforward. It's a bit frustrating to see how difficult she can be until she finally "gets it" and helps.

As a new writer, E.H. Jahr is certainly off to a good start. I enjoyed this book and look forward to her next story.

Such an lovely story about love, fate and fae magic connection with the mates. Really enjoy the love story, but also the magic lessons and political intrigues.
Kiera is a a woman that all her life belive she is not special, just a baker daughter with healing powers (that his father wants that she hide them), but Dorin (the fae prince) request her presence for a important misson she have not choice and in time she will learn that she is more powerful that she thought. But the more she spents time in Dorin´s castle more she feels an strong connection with the prince, but with she discovers the true about her origin she struggles to accept her true role. Also I love the side storys. Erik and Liam are so cute together. And Fiona was such an great friend to Kiera.

E. H. Jahr has a great writing style for the fantasy romance, it had everything that I was looking for in this type of book. I enjoyed getting to know Kiera and follow this adventure. It was a great debut novel and it left me wanting to read more from E. H. Jahr.

"Women who get near the prince have a tendency to get hurt,” the man said. Erik’s voice grew icy cool. “You are out of line. Given the situation, I have tried to be patient, but it is wearing thin. His highness’s decision is final. Now, get off the palace grounds before you are escorted out. And don’t come back here unless you’re summoned.”

📘The song of the Fae by E. H. Jahr

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

“What about love?”

The seer laughed. " What is love? Love

is devotion. Love is duty. Love is a

choice.”

A fantasy romance book with an amazing cover.

A feisty female character, a handsome prince and many secrets that lead to her denial and his rejection by her.

Interesting plot, well written book, steamy scenes, quick read with twists that make the ending unpredictable.

I definitely recommend it and I will certainly search for more works of the author!

The story developed in an interesting way but, I found myself getting frustrated by the lead characters continual rejection of the Prince , her feelings and common sense.

As with a lot of authors the female is depicted as feisty in her demeanour yet seems to display that for no real reason other than she can and just ends up appearing foolish or bloody minded. A feisty female with common sense rather than just being bolshy all the time would be much preferred.

I am honestly on the fence about whether or not I liked this book. While I did enjoy the main characters, at times I was uninterested. I understand that Book one usually sets the foundation for the series, I wasn't overly captivated. While the story line held some interest, getting all of the back story in this book, I feel is what made me lose interest. Spreading some of that out into Book 2, I think would have been a better choice. Please remember that this is my personal preference. If you read the summary and find it interesting, you should go ahead and read it.

I really liked the premise going into this book. It was promising. I don't know if I'm just over all the typical fantasy tropes or not, but it just didn't hit the spot for me.

I really did enjoy the writing. I feel like what was missing was the tension and romance between the FMC and the MMC. It kind of went from being strangers to something immediately with little build up to it. I am a sucker for a good slow burn.

Overall, this was an ok short fantasy book.

I always love reading stories about the fae and all other fantasy creatures. So that is why I also choose this book. The story was good. It was hard to put down. The writing style was good, fluent and the characters were complex especially Kiera. Her development throughout the story was most noticable. She grown from an insecure, selfdoubting person into a strong female lead. In some parts I was annoyed by her constant rejection of the prince for no obvious reason but all in all it was a good story and I would like to read the second part to see how it unfolds.

I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I loved the premise, enjoyed the twist and was intrigued by the world building. I just struggled with the romance. I normally love a fated mates narrative but this felt forced. The romance felt less like passion and more like a plot device. Hopefully the sequel will keep the brilliant bits and build on the relationship.

What an interesting twist right at the beginning. Kiera and her story sure was a surprise in a different way than expected. If you love fae, magic and great characters, this is the book. I just wish it would have ended as a standalone. Now I have to wait until there might be a follow-up. Will definitely read it!

This was a quick, entertaining read for me. I did not care for Kiera much in the beginning but as more details came to light I could empathize with her more. I feel the romance part was a little rushed; other than the main characters having a strong physical attraction there wasn't as much bonding that I would have liked to see between them (but that could just be the fact that I'm a slow burn fan talking). I'll certainly pick up the next one to see how this story progresses.

The Song of the Fae is about young woman that discovers worlds and a love that she never dreamed could exist in her simple life. I loved the story but I feel the main character questioned herself and others no matter how many times she was shown truths. It’s a beautifully constructed world.
