Oof, owtchie, this volume hurt. Wasn’t prepared for it to be so painful, but what else did we expect when this giant battle is occurring? But I wonder how it’s all going to wrap up.

Tsurumi is terrifying. His one track focus on victory and securing what he wants is intense. There were little moments that were reminiscent of a horror or thriller film in this volume, I would hate to see that shit with a backing track that includes a bunch of stings.

I will say I love watching Hijikata and Sugimoto fight together. They are more alike in disposition than one may think at first glance, and their styles compliment each other!

What in the name of all things unholy did I just read?! Good gods. This volume.

The battle at Goryokaku rages on, and if you thought it couldn’t get any bloodier, any more spectacularly, grotesquely violent, well, Noda kindly disagrees. Bodies are flying. Bodies are exploding. Bodies are missing parts they really ought to have. If you have a favorite body part, chances are someone loses it in this volume. A hand here, a cheek there, an ear somewhere in the distance. The battlefield is practically a butcher’s display counter at this point. The level of carnage is both horrifying and beautifully drawn, because, of course, it is.

If Tsurumi was unhinged before, then now we’ve passed the point of unhinged and entered full-blown, door-ripped-off-its-hinges-and-hurled-into-the-sea levels of madness. His smile is too wide, his eyes are too bright, and this manga leans in hard on making him as terrifying as humanly possible.

Characters are dropping like flies, and yet, somehow, it doesn’t feel cheap. Their arcs reach their end, some in ways we dreaded, some in ways that, if we’re being honest, we saw coming but hoped against hope wouldn’t happen. And yet, here we are.

With just one volume left, I am equal parts terrified and excited. Mostly terrified. Because if this was the second-to-last volume, then I can’t even begin to imagine what the final one has in store. I feel like it’s going to hurt. A lot.

I’m a bit conflicted. With GK reaching its climax, a lot of exciting things are unfolding while at the same time it’s clear that we’re never returning to the charming balance of food preparation and Ainu life with the world of the soldier that this series began with, which makes sense as Asirpa watches one Ainu perish after the next. I haven’t particularly loved the arcs leading up to this and I’m not sure about where it’s heading, but I’ll bite my tongue until I get to the last one.

From the eyes of a comics enjoyer though, there have been so many amazing panel compositions lately that I have been drooling over. Tsurumi really is such an excellent, intimidating and savage antagonist that I can’t get enough of, while being crushed by his actions at the same time. He is such a crazy parallel to Asirpa and it is so interesting to watch each of them cause the deaths of others because of their devotions. I can’t wait to see where this goes

I've sang Golden Kamuy's praises dozens of times since I started the series (I think it was January last year?) - this penultimate volume might be the best the series has ever been. We're reaching the climax of the greatest adventure story ever told, and ever other page has an image better than than the best most other manga have to offer. This volume involves an imperial battleship having an artillery duel with a 19th century cannon, a sniper duel, an infantry assault on a Star Fortress, a one man army beating the crap out of a train full of soldiers, and the tragic goodbye's of many beloved (and loathed, and pitied) characters.

The final volume releases in english this January - I know it can be found in many places if I wanted to read it right now, but I'll bide my time. This is a story good enough to wait for.

Don't mind me, I'm just barely keeping up with everything that's happening because this volume is nonstop action on at least six different fronts. You got the group on Hakodate Mountain, the Navy shooting at the fort, the three entrances to the fort, and Ogata being his sniper self.

But the mad dash escape is, by far, the funniest part of this whole thing because ♪ We're going off the rails on this crazy train!♫ And here I thought the hype couldn't get anymore insane.

This series has 31 volumes.

This volume is full-packed! Damn! It's so intense I can feel my ass on fire. No, because for real! Tsurumi is like the embodiment of your demon, such a good character! I don't know where to cry first or bite my nails with the anticipation of what's going to happen next. THIS IS SO GOOD! I'm so normal about GK. RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

The way that things pulled together in this volume impressed me so much. The way that the story is winding down and how the characters are getting their conclusions is impressive.
