Colorful paper illustrations complement a poem that follows a young Indian boy as he dreams of what lies beyond the confines of his small village, watching the boats drift down the stream.
Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West."
Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to topics political and personal. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.
it made me feel the way I did when I was a kid, in my village, tossing flowers into the creek, hoping someone would see me one day. Long before the internet, long before books, long before writing and publishing. This was great.
This poem is about a lonely young boy who seeks companionship from someone who doesn’t live in his village. Which really for me wasn’t that interesting plot.
The plot was boring and uninteresting for me and it felt like torture for me because it really was the generic plot for poems which of course is how much life sucks.
The writing style here is also very bad and I just couldn’t find anything I would like about this poem
Illustrator Bochak illustrations were interesting.
Paper Boats is about, I believe, a lonely little boy who seeks companionship from outside his village. He builds paper boats, writes his name on them then places them in the water watching them sail off hoping they will reach foreign lands.
A young boy from a small village makes paper boats and sends them off hoping they will be found by someone in a strange new land. Gorgeous paper illustrations.
