Overall I really liked the plot idea and writing in this book. But, while still keeping this a spoiler free review, I have to say I did not like the ending. At all. It just seemed like a lot of build up for a short and simple ending. I also did not like one of the main characters, Ellie. I did however like the other characters, and they were all written fairly well. I didn't have any real issues with this book aside from the ending seeming a tad bit rushed.

I have four other books by Clare Marshall on my shelf waiting to be read, so hopefully they all hold the same easy to read writing displayed in this book!

(Thanks Clare for providing me a digital copy for review!)
I went into this tour not knowing much about Clare or Within, but was more than happy to help her promote! She has accomplished pretty much exactly what I would like to (well minus the writing a book part, I don't think I'd be very good at that...) I loved what she is doing with her website and business! Anywho, after reading the synopsis of Within I was definitely intrigued. The main character suffers brain damage from a terrible accident. Her mother and boyfriend are distraught. Then one day she starts writing. Not just the alphabet, but a dark and twisted tale. Yes, I definitely wanted to know what this story was all about.
Clare left a note for reviewers on her site that said Within was not a book for everyone. She also told us that it did not contain your typical love triangle and that the story builds scene by scene. I found this to be a really neat thing for an author to do. Needless to say, I was definitely not sure what to expect from Within.
This book was different. In a great way. It's momentum built slowly, which I know might not appeal to all readers. However, it worked--really well--for this story! I liked the constantly changing points of view. You got to experience the dark and gritty mind of Within's bad guy while also seeing the story from another light.
Being a Novella in length, I think Clare did a great job putting together a cohesive and complete story. I didn't get the feeling that anything was lacking as I was reading.
Readers be warned though, some of the scenes are a bit graphic in nature. When I say you get to experience things through the bad guy...yea you really do. His whole world. However, I will say that this POV is necessary to become fully immersed in this story.
Within is full of emotion and it really comes bubbling out in Clare's characters. You will feel your heart strings being pulled off and on through the entirety of the book. Each character has their part and they play it well!
I really liked so many things about Within. Originality, suspense, THE COVER! I can't believe I haven't mentioned how much I adore the cover. Some covers just really catch my eye and this one sure did! I could probably stuff so much more into this review, but honestly, you should go snag a copy for yourself instead. If you are looking for something that totally lacks the cookie cutter plot, this book will deliver. Within is definitely worth the read and I am looking forward to reading more of Clare's work in the near future.

First of all, I loved the cover! Stunning.

The novel is written in different POV's. It wasn't easy following the POV's at first, but once I read on, it got better, ready to hop to hop the next POV. In fact it I found it to be a very effective method of showing how each character was affected in what was happening in the story.

Ellie, Zack and Trinity are involved in an accident that completely changes Trinity's, her best friend Ellie and boyfriend Zack, and parents lives. The accident leaves her with brain damage which causes her to act younger than her actual age. The worst is she cannot remember who her friends are. They have to deal with the possibility of Trinity remaining in this state permanently.

I don't want to give too much away. But what I'd like to say is, if you like a book so emotional, laced with mystery and has some dark stuff going on, I'd highly recommend this book.

Being a fan of books that have a darker tone in them, I'll say I enjoyed this one. I loved the characters, beautifully drawn. Oh, and the emotions in this book! I felt what the characters were going through. Clare C. Marshall has done a good job with this story. And I look forward to reading more stories from this author.

Thank you Clare for giving me the opportunity to read your book in exchange for an honest review. :)

First of all it was great to meet you Clare! And great start! I personally think I would've preferred if the book was a little bit longer as I feel a bit too much was revealed too soon. It would've been interesting to experience the shock of Wiley being Edmund later in the story than knowing it was him all along. The ending was well written emotionally as we're many of the book's other heavier sequences.
There were a few minor details that maybe could have been changed (not a huge deal but little things I noticed, I'm one of those readers). For example, when Trinity first gets into the accident and is on the pavement there is a description that says "blood and something not blood" I wasn't a huge fan of this description personally it seemed awkward to me. I think it would've been improved by describing what the "something not blood" was instead of just saying "something not blood." Also later in the book when Trinity throws up on stage Stephanie starts barking directions at people she refers to Wiley as Edmund, at this point I didn't think she knew Wiley was Edmund, so why did she call him that? Unless there's another explanation I didn't gather. However, those are just little things.
Overall, keep up the good work and looking forward to reading my copy of The Violet Fox!

This book is not light and fluffy but dark, and suspenseful. It is told in the point of view of everyone surrounding Trinity, though I think it would have been interesting to hear her voice no matter how simple it may or may not have been. I would've have liked to hear the thoughts that drove her to write her story. I'm still trying to figure out how/what caused Trinity to have these psychic episodes, why is she able to tap into that negative energy of the occult. This story is mysterious, and deceptive....not at all what you will expect when the accident happens and Trinity becomes brain damaged. Within is so much more than that. To sum it up it was a good read but the end did not make me happy(no warm and fuzzy here), it was unfair I think.....but you'll have to read to find out why.

A very good read by a local talent. It grabbed right away and I finished the book in an afternoon while on vacation. My only wish is that it was a bit longer. But, I have to say I will never look at the Halifax Commons the same way again.

Well first of all, I'd like to say that Clare Marshall is an amazing author! This book is very good! Great plot, great twists that keep you guessing. I won't post any spoilers. The ending was tough but it challenged alot of stereotypes and I think that that's ok from time to time! Overall... great read!

This books starts with two different stories, the first one being that of Trinity, Zack and Ellie. They are working on an English project together at Ellie’s mom’s house. After they are finished, Ellie drives Trinity and Zack, who are boyfriend/girlfriend, home. On the way to drop them off, they are in a terrible accident, one that they aren’t sure that Trinity will survive.

She does survive, but has severe brain damage. She reverts to adolescence. Trinity’s parents, Stephanie and George, are having disagreements on how to take care of Trinity. Stephanie works for Wiley Dalton, who is running for mayor. George wants her to ask for time off of the campaign to stay home and take care of Trinity. Stephanie doesn’t really want to ask for time off, but she does half-heartedly. Wiley encourages her to stay on as the elections are nearing. This is putting a strain on Stephanie’s and George’s relationship.

Trinity starts having these episodes where she is writing non-stop. It is amazing, that someone with her level of brain function can write such intricate stories. Zack visits Trinity nearly every day. Sometimes he brings Ellie along. It isn’t long before they start to get intrigued by Trinity’s stories as well.

Then there is Edmund and how he created the Order of Purus who worship the God, Omnus. The Order of Purus believe that they are the superior race and they need to “redeem” the “impure.” It tells of how Edmund recruited men to the Order and how they go about redeeming.

My Opinion:
At first, I found this story hard to get into. The two different parts of the story weave in and out and I had a hard time connecting the two. After I got about ⅓ to ½ ways through the book, I began to understand the stories a little better and things started to make sense. Between was full of surprises, though. As soon as you thought that you understood things and that you knew what was going to happen next, something would happen that would change the direction of your thinking. Overall, this was a good book. I love the mystery element to it and that fact that it wasn’t predictable.

I Liked:

●Trinity. I even like her at the beginning of the book before the accident. She was not only a good friend to Ellie; she was also a good girlfriend to Zack. After her accident, she reverted and didn’t remember either of them.

●Zack. He is very loyal to Trinity, both before and after her accident. He always has hope that Trinity will get better and that she will remember him and love him like she used to.

●Ellie. She is Trinity’s best friend and consequently hangs out with Zack a lot because of it. She tries her best to do right by Trinity and she feels guilty for what happens because she was driving when the accident happened.

●George. Trinity’s father. He doesn’t get mentioned much in the book, but he truly has Trinity’s best interest at heart.

I Did Not Like:

●Stephanie. Trinity’s mom. When she was first presented with the problem of someone needing to stay home with Trinity after the accident, she didn’t want to take time off of work to do that.

●Wiley Dalton. At first he seems really good…too good. He ruined it for me when he talked Stephanie out of staying home with Trinity because he needed her for his campaign.

●Edmund. He has issues.

●The Order of Purus. This society, cult, whatever you want to call them, is just sick and wrong. Killing people, redeeming the impure…

Cover:

On the cover is Trinity. I really like the way she looks on this cover. It looks like she is simple minded and not paying attention to anything which fits the description of her after the accident. I’m not exactly sure what the leaves have to do with the story, but they add a nice touch to the cover.

Okay, so whew! Let's get down to this review.

This is a novella and I didn't know that prior to reading it. So I was actually shocked with the pace everything was going and to discover that it's actually short. So yes, it is a short read but in now way did it lack in plot or action. It was jam-packed with that and the author wasted no time in telling the story she wants to tell us. I finished this in one sitting, save for that little nap I simply had to have. Hee.

I joined the blog tour purely because I want to help Clare and I've been eyeing her The Violet Fox for so long. Plus, when I read the blurb, I was definitely intrigued. Who wouldn't? Trinity suffers brain damage and then she writes this great story? How? Why? So I signed up! Thank you to Clare C. Marshall for holding this tour and for giving me the chance to read this book. This in no way affected my review and all of these are my honest thoughts. So back to Within...

Within is told in different perspectives. Yeap, not just one. This is in great service to the story because you just have to know how each character thinks and their motivations. Even without labels as to who was talking, you won't be confused because Clare masterfully changes tone as she changes POVs. I love that.

Clare warned people that Within might not be for everyone. I agree. It has some gritty, realistic and gory details some of the weak-hearted might opt out of. It describes graphic violence and thoughts so so dark and twisted, you might shudder. At first, the novel took its time to establish the characters and the setting. I can't quite predict what's gonna happen. But once Edmund started speaking, it was a whirlwind of information and happenings. Woah. I totally did not expect this story just from the blurb. Clare, you took us all by surprise!

The only gripe I have about this book are the characters. See, it could have been a 4 but seriously, I hated Ellie and Stephanie. Ellie is SUPPOSEDLY Trinity's best friend but she couldn't care less about Trinity. Ellie likes Zack, Trinity's boyfriend ever since and she just keeps on trying to get him for herself. Back off, girl! The boy's taken BY YOUR BEST FRIEND. She's possibly the worst best friend ever until she kinda redeemed herself in the end. I say kinda because I don't think she's redeemable. Gah, she frustrated the heck out of me. She's selfish, inconsiderate and she certainly lacks compassion. She's smart though and I'd give her that. And kinda kickass with her athleticism. But seriously, worst friend ever. Zack is the lovesick boy and while he wasn't irritating, I think he's a stock character. Trinity spent most of the time being mentally challenged with these bouts of obsession to writing her story so I can't comment on her much. Most of all, I hate Stephanie. What kind of a mother are you? Your seventeen year-old daughter now acts as if she's in kindergarten and all you can think of is your career? You don't even care. Wow. You're just a volunteer? You can't leave? George too. What great parents. You're the vice president of the company. You can't take a leave? The most fleshed out character would be the villain. Rocked my socks off. So yeah, I guess it kinda balances everything. Moreover, maybe it was Clare's intention to make her characters like this and if so, she succeeded.

Lastly, the cover. Wee, I love the cover!

Within is an ambitious novella that presents two main challenges to the reader. First, the story is told from multiple points of view, including that of a truly vile villain. The POVs shift frequently and within chapters, so it’s not as though a single character narrates a whole chapter. Second, some of these characters are quite unlikable, and one is just beyond despicable. I thought that both of these aspects combined to give Within an edgy feel to it that at once made me nervous about what was going to happen next and anxious to read on and find out.

I really liked the way in which the multiple POVs were handled. I didn’t find them confusing to follow at all, and I think that this style worked very well for the story. My only problem was that I didn’t always like what the characters were thinking, but that’s the type of book Within is. It’s not a fluffy, sugary tale. Clare Marshall took a unique approach to telling this story, and it paid off greatly.

Even with access to their thoughts, I couldn’t understand the actions of Trinity’s mother, Stephanie, and Trinity’s best friend, Ellie. “Best” is a word that should be used loosely in Ellie’s case because she spends most of the book pining away for Trinity’s boyfriend, Zack. Even after the car accident that leaves Trinity severely brain damaged. Actually, “pining” isn’t even the right word to describe how badly Ellie wants Zack all to herself. Even after Trinity’s accident. Note to Ellie: moving in on your best friend’s boyfriend right after she’s suffered brain damage is so not cool.

Trinity’s mother, Stephanie, equally frustrated me. All this woman thinks about is her volunteer job helping mayoral candidate Wiley Dalton get elected. If there were a prize for having a one-track mind, there’d be a dead heat between Stephanie and Ellie. While the logic, or lack thereof, of these two characters made my head spin, I admit that their behavior made for intriguing reading. I got the impression that not all of the characters in Within were supposed to be likable, that their actions were meant to raise eyebrows. Interestingly, I think that this had the effect of making Zack look a little too perfect, though he is definitely not without faults. It’s just that in comparison to Ellie and Stephanie, Zack appears saintly.

I knew going into this book that it was a dark, intense read, and it was. There were some scenes of violence and a POV from a hate-spewing villain that made me shudder. Although there is a touch of the paranormal to it, Within could also easily fall under the thriller genre because at its center is a ruthless, murderous maniac who is determined to carry out his twisted plans.

Within makes the most out of its novella-sized length with both a thought-provoking plot and characters. What really stood out for me, though, was the narrative technique. Marshall skillfully uses the multiple POVs to assemble her chilling tale suspenseful piece by suspenseful piece.

Let's start with the cover. Many words could be used to desribe the beauty that is this cover. My choice of word? Captivating!
I saw Clare on Twitter and this was her profile picture. I was absolutely awestruck because I think it is simply stunning! Well done Clare's partner Dave on an amazing job!

The book itself? Well I have to say, it is different from anything I have read before. It drew me in within just moments of the first word. It's a fast-paced, well written, page-turner of a book that I could not and would not put down. Yes, real life interrupted occasionally, but when there were not distractions, I was glued to this beautiful story.

WITHIN is a story about a girl called Trinity Hartell. Just a normal, pretty schoolgirl. She has the gorgeous boyfriend Zack, the sweet best friend Ellie, the hard-working parents. You would think Trinity has it all - and you wouldn't be wrong. That is until her life is turned upside-down and inside-out by an accident. Life then becomes a downhill spiral for the Hartell family. Their daughter is left with irreparable brain damage, making her act like someone much younger than her physical shell.

How will the Hartell's cope? Their only daughter has gone back to acting the way she did in her childhood. She sits and plays with dolls and colours in colouring books.

How will Zack cope with the loss of his girlfriend who no longer even knows his name?

How will Ellie cope with her best friend not recognising her any more?

Then Trinity suddenly takes up a crayon and a piece of paper. She starts to write in cursive writing like she did before the accident? She writes a story about a psychotic murderer. Could this be just the ramblings of a girl with brain damage? Or could this be something much more sinister?

This story moved me to tears. I was left mourning the loss of the Trinity that was once so full of vitality. I felt bad for the Hartell's for the loss of the daughter they once knew. But I think I felt most sorry for Zack and Ellie. Zack is such a sweet boy and loves Trinity so much. All he wants is for his girlfriend to recognise him. It broke my heart. As for Ellie, she was on a turmoil all of her own and I felt such a deep sympathy for her.

High praise indeed for Clare Marshall. This story was emotive, raw, moving, compelling and beautiful.

Thank you Clare for letting me read WITHIN. This is one book I would for sure love to have in paper back for my bookshelf at home.

Book Synopsis:

Trinity Hartell’s life changed after the accident. Left with irreversible brain damage, she becomes a burden to her mother, a cause for heartbreak for her boyfriend Zack, and a flattened obstacle for her best friend Ellie.

But then she starts writing. Perhaps it’s a coincidence that the psychotic murdering protagonist of her novel bears a striking similarity to the charming Wiley Dalton, a mayoral candidate in the upcoming election.

Or perhaps not…

Book Review:

When I first heard about this book, my first reaction was that this sounded like an interesting read. This was a very different book than I expected, but an enjoyable read never the less.

The enjoyment of this novella came from the way that all the characters were written. I mean every character in some way is affected by this tragedy. There is no character that is not touched or hurt by Trinity’s accident.

I think in some ways this is a dark, but very realistic way of what happens sometimes to accident victims or people who have had some kind of brain damage. I thought the author did a beautiful job of illustrating the stress and pain that Trinity’s brain damage has caused.

You have her boyfriend still hoping against hope that she will return to the girl that he knew. He doesn’t want to let go and this is done with such realism, that your heart breaks for Zach. Him and Trinity were looking forward to the future, now that future is gone. Elle, who is Trinity friend realizes that Trinity is not the same or will ever be the same. Elle is heartbroken that Zach doesn’t see things clearly, but she does.

The writing that Trinity does is disturbing. It’s very dark, but no one knows how true it really is. The book takes on a dark tone here and really hits some gold here. What I like is that the twists are so realistic and come at you fast, that’s it very believable.

The ending of this book was heart breaking. I cried at the ending. I don’t like when I cry at the end of a book, because it means that I’m at the end of a journey and have to say goodbye. Yet this book was very heartfelt. I wish the book had been a little longer. All these characters felt something for one another and it was love for Trinity.

A very emotional ending

While it sounds like the plot for a lot of young adult novels out there, especially at the start with the accident and has the potential of going in a very generic direction, however, author Clare C. Marshall has her own unique vision for the story and while it still has the YA elements here, the story takes a much more intriguing turn of events and drags a connection between different elements in the society and the city that these teens live in. The story changes form, touching from one genre to another and making it quite a page-turner.

The novel follows the different characters as it flows through the story. With a more focus on its few leading characters and their observation of Tiffany, it gives each of them a certain level of development. At the heart of this, the main mystery will have to be for Tiffany who doesn’t really get her own narrative but as she is being observed and has each of her episodes, it is suspenseful as it is never certain whether her episodes are supernatural or something else as a result of her accident. On the other side of the spectrum, Ellie as her best friend definitely has her spot and drives the plot development but somehow has some elements that develops which makes her not quite likeable. However, Ellie and Zack are two teenagers dealing with something which is quite over their heads. However, there are always those staple characters like Tiffany’s mother who seems to genuinely lack the understanding and caught up in a situation which causes things to be slightly frustrating at times. However, a really nicely written character is the main character of Tiffany’s character and the politician in running as mayoral candidate who finds his place somewhere near the middle of the story but does have quite a presence and depth. Its one of the well-written characters in the story.

With that said, there are slight pacing issues here. The beginning bits as the youths deal with the accident and their friend with a bright future suddenly reverting back to a child’s mentality is fairly dramatic and very much in the generic which also moves too fast without the characters lacking depth to make it as involving as it should be however, the characters each have their layers and as the plot thickens, the pacing picks up to its advantage creating its suspense and mystery. There are some really plot ideas here and the execution overall works.

It is my first time reviewing an ebook copy and I am really excited about it. I am also excited because Within's synopsis is promising. I am so happy to write my review.

Trinity's life has changed after her car accident. She had severe brain damage that she starts to act like a child and not like a seventeen-year old. She doesn't recognize most of her family and friends, even Zack, her boyfriend. When she starts to write a story, almost everyone takes it as an effect of her brain trauma but not Zack and Trinity's best friend Ellie. They know that the story is true. That their mayoral candidate is a murderer.

I had fun reading the novella. At first one would believe that its a contemporary plotted novella, but as you go deeper, there's a very surprising twist that I didn't see coming. It has a slow build-up at first which helped the story and characters to develop. I was also able to see glimpses of Canada for that matter. The fact that its just 190 pages, I was surprised its that good.

Marshall wrote Within in a way that a reader would definitely enjoy it. I liked how the story progressed from a romance to a full-blown action/mystery plot. I liked how Trinity's character made her part very well though the accident is really heart breaking and I honestly feel for Zack. He's a very faithful boyfriend and given his situation, one could seldom find a man like him. He didn't take advantage of anyone nor use the current situation for his benefit. I just didn't like Ellie that much. Her faith in her best friend, no matter what her condition is, proved that she's a good friend. Though her character is a very tough one, her persistence with whatever she's holding out for Zack didn't get my approval.

I just wish that there's a little more explanation about the cult so just not to leave a reader hanging. I wanted more of it and there were some questions I wasn't able to find answers to.

Marshall provided a good read that would keep you up for hours just to finish it. Within, all in all, is a fast-paced mystery/action novella. It is truly gruesome but in a detective kind of way and I wish there's more. I really enjoyed it!

‘’Within’’ was definitely a very good book. I really enjoyed it and from my point of view, it was too short. But this book was also heart-breaking. I actually cried in the end.

Well, I can tell you the story was original. Clare’s writing style was beautiful and I would love to read anything she writes in the future. She did a great job with ‘’Within’’.

Now let’s talk a little bit about the story:

Ellie, Zack and Trinity were very good friends and they didn’t expected THAT. The accident was tragic for Trinity – she was left with brain damage. She can’t remember almost nothing and she is acting like a five years old child (and she is seventeen). But most important, she can’t remember Zack – her boyfriend. Oh my, this boy was so broken-hearted, I just wanted to go and hug him. Zack really loved Trinity with all his heart.

Meanwhile, Ellie falls in love with him. She isn’t a bad character, so don’t hate her because she wanted a relationship with her best friend’s boyfriend. She is just jealous, but she loves Trinity too.

Now the weirdest thing in the world happens – Trinity writes a book. How can a person with brain damage do that? I don’t know, but is was so creepy fantastic. The story is about a man – Edmund, who happens to be a mayor at day and a killer at night. The strange thing is that he is so much alike Wiley Dalton, the mayoral candidate in the upcoming election. To be more precise, Edmund is a psychotic murderer who believes in a fake God –Omnus- and he kills people for him. He says that he redeems the impure…

But there is no coincidence – Edmund is Wiley and he is the KILLER. The whole town is in real danger! When he finds out that a retardat child like Trinity knows the truth, he will try to vanish her. Will he succeed it? Maybe or maybe not. You have to read the book to find out.

The ending was sad and beautiful and amazing at the same time. I can’t believe the story is over. I am so sorry for Trinity, she was my favorite character and I loved her so much. Thank you, Mrs. Clare, for writing such a fantastic book.

Overall, if you want a very good book with an original plot, you will want to read ‘’Within’’. This book is full of action and suspense. You will beg for more, believe me.

If I were to sum up this book in a word, it would original. After a bit of a slow start, the plot grew until it was full of twists and turns that took the story in unpredictable directions. This unfolding mystery was definitely the strength of Within; I truly had no idea how everything would end and I enjoyed the unraveling of the various subplots and the way they twisted together into an interesting ending.

The setting was fresh and well-developed, with just enough description to make Halifax, Nova Scotia vividly clear in my imagination. As a fellow Canadian, I enjoyed the pop culture references – from Tim Hortons to Metric – and I ended the book filled with a desire to visit the Maritimes.

I’d have liked to see more attention given to developing the characters, though; while the mystery was vivid and interesting, the characters felt as if they were sketched in, with a universal lack of growth that weakened my connection to the story. Trinity doesn’t have much of a point-of-view so it was difficult to care about her, and the other main characters stay within their roles as defined in the synopsis: the boyfriend who can’t let go and the best friend who wants the boyfriend for herself. That being said, I appreciated the fact that these weren’t typical YA roles or problems – it’s nice to see some originality beyond “hot guy” and “mean girl.”

Perhaps part of my struggle to like the characters can be blamed on what was, in my reading experience, the most depressing love triangle ever. I don’t think there was any way it could have not been depressing, considering that one third of triangle is suffering from a devastating brain injury, but adding in the fact that her supposed best-friend was trying to get the injured boyfriend for herself made it…sad. Darkly sad. A little twisted. Emotional, yes, but not in a way that I found particularly enjoyable.

Summary: An entertaining mystery with a twisty plot, extremely creepy villain, and some characters who broke out of the stereotypical YA roles. An interesting read with a pleasantly dark aftertaste.

"Mrs. Marshall has done an exemplary job of writing both sad and emotional scenes, but also weaving together an intricate story line that will captures any reader."

Now, this entire novel is heartbreaking, I’m not going to lie, have tissues on hand because Mrs. Marshall wastes no time getting to the action, leaving you feeling beyond sorry for the characters within the first couple of pages.

But quickly she turns things around, giving you a mystery that needs to be solved. The novel is written showing us many POV’s allowing the words on the page depth, tension and action. Through the eyes of the characters we follow not only Trinity’s story, the one she begins writing, but also from the antagonists psychotic rampage to rid the world of imperfect humans.

Some of the scenes are a little hard to take. The cruel and sadistic views of the antagonist have your stomach twisting but they are also integral to the story itself, giving you a novel that really is full of page-turning goodness.

Mrs. Marshall has done an exemplary job of writing both sad and emotional scenes, but also weaving together an intricate story line that will captures any reader.

And of course, since this in YA let’s not forget the boyfriend Zach and the best friend Ellie, the two of them have their place in the novel, adding even more interest to the storyline itself, and the pair are out to solve the main mystery of the novel, proving that Trinity has a special ability and the events of her story are not just to entertain anyone that reads them, but in fact are based on true events, pointing the finger at a very unlikely suspect giving you a twist you weren’t quite expecting.

As I said above, this is a unique storyline, a breath of fresh air in a market that is filled with fantasy creatures and the like, and of course, fluffy romance. This has none of that giving the novel an edge of difference that reminds us that there is so much more out there. You can have a story with normal characters, a unique ability, and a murder mystery tied into one that is amazing.

This book wasn't really what I was expecting, but I was somewhat surprised by how much I liked it in a hatred sort of way. Confusing I know, but you'll understand in a little bit.

The story is definitely original in its plot and characters. There are a number of twists in this book; it's sort of like a roller coaster. One minute I'd be in this heart-wrenching scene and the next I'd want to slap characters. (Yeah, I'm talking to you Ellie and Mrs. Hartell!)

The story does start off a bit slow and I did have to wait a while to really understand where the plot would go, but it wasn't anything that deterred me from reading. This brings me to the characters. Marshall was able to create an interesting array of characters that kept the story going. My only wish was that they were a bit more developed. I never really felt the best friend connection between Ellie and Trinity. Even after the accident, I found myself repeatedly screaming in my head, "How are you her friend?!" Alternatively, I did feel the love Zack had for Trinity even though there was little development in their story line as well. I believe it was due to how emotional Zack was throughout the book. His feelings always seemed to jump out from the pages and grab a hold of me.

The most enticing part of this book was the mystery of the plot. I never really understood what was going on until the latter half of the book. Dalton was one crazy psycho, and I'd really wanted to know more about him and where his story really stemmed from. Marshall did a great job writing a suspenseful yet heart-breaking plot that kept me reading to the last page.

Though different from what I first expected, this creepy page turner is for anyone who's looking for an intriguing love triangle with a twist. My only wish would be for the story to continue to get more into the lives of Trinity's family and friends. I'll definitely be watching out for Marshall's future projects! Thanks again to Faery Ink Press and Clare for letting me be a part of this amazing blog tour.

This review was originally posted on my blog, Ramblings of a Daydreamer. You can find it, and many more reviews at the blog.

Within wasn’t what I was expecting, but it grabbed me right away and had me very curious.

There were quite a few twists and turns, lots of action, and it was refreshingly unpredictable. The story was unique, well written, dark and sometimes disturbing, heartbreaking, and very realistic. I liked how the reader got to experience things from different character’s perspectives and really see how Trinity’s brain damage affected everyone in her life.

'Edmund' was a great villain - sick, twisted, and psychotic, but able to cover it up with a charming smile and winning personality so that nobody would suspect that he was really a crazy, Hitler-esque murderer. The things he did should have seemed far-fetched, but he was so sick that they actually seemed very real and believable.

I appreciated the fact that the story wasn’t all that long. Too many books are much longer than they need to be and are packed with filler, but this book was just right and it held my interest all the way through.

On a side note, I loved that it was set in Canada. Ms Marshall is from Halifax and that's where the story was set. Most Canadian authors set their books in the States or somewhere else, so that’s something Ms Marshall and I have in common as Canadian authors - we both set our books in Canada. It was exciting for me to read about familiar places like Tim Horton’s and Shopper’s Drug Mart. I’ve never been to Halifax, but because my dad’s side of the family is from the east coast, I recognized a lot of the places mentioned in the book, and that added an extra layer of enjoyment for me personally.

I definitely think this book deserves more attention. It was so different, and had a bit of everything. I can’t wait to see what Ms Marshall does in the future.

I would describe this book as a psychological thriller. For some reason, I thought it was paranormal, but I was wrong.

The book starts off with Ellie in the psychologist’s office. He is trying to get her to open up about the events that had happened. She doesn’t really want to talk about it, but, decides to just go for it. She begins thinking back to that fateful night and the story moves on from there. I found this to be an interesting way to start off. The story had captured my attention just by wandering what had happened to make Ellie so closed up and shut people out of her life?

From the very beginning, I did not like Ellie. You could tell that she was jealous of Trinity for having Zack and really wanted him for herself. She just seemed like a weasel and someone that does not make for best friend material. Even after Trinity’s accident, she still was thinking of herself. Zack was a perfect boyfriend! He was sweet and kind. I enjoyed the fact that he stuck right by Trinity’s side and just wanted the best for her! The writer did a great job at portraying the pain and agony he had felt when Trinity was in the hospital.

The reader will actually be shocked by how the story actually plays out and whom has involvement with the murder. There were some parts that were a little hard to follow, but it did not deter me from finishing.

The ending of this book was bitter sweet. I did end up shedding a few tears and was able to smile at the same time. The writer did a good job at wrapping up all the loose ends and I would highly recommend this read for a lover of psych thrillers!

This book was definitely not what I was expecting.. and I loved it! It was written in third person and followed the lives of several main characters. Even though we were hearing things from different perspectives, I still felt like I knew each character.

I loved Trinity! Even after the accident she was still a sweetheart and it was horrible seeing all the bad things happen to her. Zach was another of my favourites; no matter what happened he wouldn't give up on Trinity, wouldn't stop loving her. It was a beautiful relationship all the way through.

The other characters were all gorgeously written, both their faults and redeeming qualities. They had a lot of shortcomings to begin with, (Ellie and Stephanie and several other characters) but then their 'lighter' side came out and you began to see more of the caring person they could grow into.

In the story Trinity suffers brain damage and reverts back to the intelligence of a young child. Suddenly she is possesed by these sudden spurts of writing and she seems to become more aware of who she was. This is both a lifeline and a dagger to those who love her because just a quickly she falls back into her child-like mind.

There are many different elements to this story which all work really well together. The 'story' Trinity writes really adds to the suspense, you're constantly wondering if they will figure out the mystery in time. All-in all I had a magical, crazy, heart-breaking ride and thoroughly enjoyed it!

First thing I need to say is… CREEPY! The whole dang story is creepy. The villain is so twisted and merciless that at times I found it hard to stomach. On top of that, there are some very dark and somber undertones as you observe the family and friends of Trinity deal with the accident. I could feel the tension building as I progressed through the story. Though I may not read thrillers often, this story has made me want more of them!

The plot starts off a bit on the slow side, but really gains momentum as Trinity begins her writing! I found some parts to be predictable, but overall the story was original and, at times, heart-wrenching. The plot certainly didn’t play out as I had originally thought it would, but I love it when stories keep me on my toes!

I had a few qualms with the characters in this story. Many of the the characters were dull, underdeveloped, and lacking spark and originality. They didn’t grab me and make me care what happened to them. The mystery of the plot is what pushed me through. Because I appreciate well developed characters as much as I do, I found Within hard to get through at times.

Despite my issues with the characters, I really enjoyed Marshall’s writing style! There is a wonderful flow and pacing about it. It is clear and concise without being wordy or too simplistic. Overall, Within pours out suspense and developing talent! I’m very curious to see where Clare’s work goes in the future. She is definitely one to watch!

4 1/2 stars....

I would like to thank the author, Clare C. Marshall, for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book for her one year anniversary tour.
I was totally blown away by this book. Completely and utterly blown away by this book. It was just. that. good. This morning I sat down on my sofa with the intent of getting to the halfway point with it today and continuing tomorrow. I looked down at the pages, and noticed I only had 10 more left. And then it was over.
Your heart totally goes out to Trinity and the love that Zack continues to have for her after the accident. I wanted to smack Trinity's mom for being a selfish person and putting her career ahead of her daughter, but then let's lump in Trinity's father for the same reason, because I sure as heck didn't see him rushing to take FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) after Trinity came back from the hospital. True though, this story was in Canada so maybe they have other laws, but surely they would have an equivalent?
Ellie was a selfish, hormonal brat who just saw the accident and its consequences as a chance to hook up with her bestie's boyfriend. However, at the end, I could only wish her the best.

Within by Clare C. Marshall is a tragically terrific read. It jumps around a bunch, but brings it all together in the end. And what a wonderfully creepy end indeed. Well worth the read.
