Are you ready for the tour? Packer is your tour guide, and he will serve you well, pointing out some of the most interesting, beautiful, and practical aspects of this brief walk through this old house called “Theology”. Packer is no boring, academically minded tour guide, but an obviously passionate guide who cares deeply about you as the visitor. Packer’s aim is never merely to give you facts. He is always focused on connecting your heart to those facts so that you’ll see all the beauty and benefit he sees. Packer wants you to follow him through this house to inspire you to build your home using the same ancient pattern. This old house is built on the rock, and it has stood the test of time.
Over the course of my life I’ve read through the Bible dozens of times and thought I had a pretty accurate idea of who God is and what He is like. I realize now how wrong I was. This book really opened my eyes. There is so much more to God than I had realized. This book is life changing.
I feel like it might take a couple reads to grasp all that this book has to offer! Ultimately I just want to know GOD more and this book was extremely helpful in that pursuit!
With the high praise this book gets I thought I would like it more than I did. It's a good introduction to theology and appreciation for the God of Christianity, but I found it to be more of a mental exercise than one of the heart. I also did not agree with how far Packer seems to take the elimination of the use of images (such as even having a picture of Jesus on your wall in your home), making this the subject of a full chapter.
