This one didn't really grab me by the throat and demand my attention. I read the first chapter on TokyoPop's website and was intrigued enough to pick it up. I can't tell yet if this was a mistake. The series could be good, bad, or ugly. Or anywhere in between. Not enough happened to really draw me in. Two chapters of Yotsuba& and I'm addicted for life; a full volume of Gothic Sports and I'm quietly reserving judgment.

There were things I liked and things I didn't. Some of the characters have potential and could draw out my interest. That's good. Panel design is lacking and it's often frustratingly difficult to tell who is speaking in a given moment - frustrating enough to take me out of the story and make me investigate the panels for clues I may have missed. That's bad. The goth-uniforms are pretty hip looking. That's good. It's sometimes hard to tell supporting characters apart (or even whether they're male or female). That's bad.

I don't know enough about the author to know whether she's established as a creator or if she's a relative newcomer (and hence giving me hope that her craft will vastly improve over the next few volumes - compare the first few volumes of Usagi Yojimbo to those crafted years later and the difference in craft is striking!). In any case, I'm willing to give the series another volume to get it together.

Fun sports manga about a soccer team and trying to stand up to the odds. I liked it, and I hope I'll get to read the others.

This was a decent read, nothing special but enough to keep me interested. In saying that, it took a little time for me to fully get into the story.
I've never read a sports manga before and it certainly did hold my interest more than I thought it would but I think that was more down to the quirky characters rather than the actual plot.
I loved the idea of creating a sports team made up entirely of misfits and outcasts and the obvious reasons for doing this, but a lot of the atmosphere just felt too heavy with degradation and sexism for this "revolution" to stand out as a very positive solution.
Overall, a good read but not something I'm super excited to continue with. I'm not in any rush, but volume one was enjoyable.

Pick it up, give it a go and enjoy! ^^

This was an interesting manga. I’m not quite sure what my feelings are on it.

Based on the stats of the characters, it shows they are between the ages of 16-18, but I don’t feel they are necessarily that age? I do love the premise though and I admire Anya for not wanting to give up and to really find a sport she can play with all her heart.

Marie is awful! She does her role of being a bully well and sort of surprised how everyone is sort of “chill” with her attitude overall? Not sure what I expected in their reactions to her, but I’m glad that Anya stood her ground.

The art is really pretty! Even if I’m a little uncertain of the story (I really like the premise!), I’ve appreciated many of the panels/pages!

While I’m a little nervous if I’ll like the next volume or not, I am eager to see how this match unfolds. I hope it will be a good game!

Synopsis: It's a classic tale of girl goes to new elite high school. Girl then wants to join mostly boys soccer team before tournament. Drama ensues. Girl decides to form her own team. Only a couple of her friends want to join. Girl decides to make team more interesting. Fortunately, one of her friends is a gothic lolita. Hrm... Hilarity and cute uniforms ensue. Boys join and whine about skirts. Boys uniforms are made. Team has to prove itself against aforementioned soccer team. Dun Dunnn DUNNNN!

I read the back of Gothic Sports and had to pick it up. I'm not a big sports guy, but when I read the sentence "Say hello to the world's first Gothic-Lolita soccer team!", I knew I had to check it out. I wasn't disappointed.

The manga follows Anya, the new girl at Lucrece High School, who wants to join one of their elite sports teams before a big tournament. She meets some other misfits, including the gothic lolita character I mentioned above, develops a rival, and there is a mysterious boy from her past. It isn't explained in the first volume, but apparently the cute, and mysterious Leon did something to really piss Anya off in elementary school and she still holds a grudge.

So, not only is there the pretty fucking awesome concept of gothic lolita soccer, but there are healthy doses of drama and hilarity. A fun manga for when you aren't in the mood for action or anything intense.

At the height of the 'Manga Revolution' Tokyopop began looking outside Japan for Manga titles - A whole host of European and American series got the go-ahead, the majority of which were terrible - and in my opinion was a major factor in it's downfall.

Gothic Sports from German artist Anike Hage is a good example. Anya moves to a new high school - tries to get on the basketball team and gets humiliated by the bitchy captain. She then tries the soccer team but the boys won't let the girls play so she sets up her own soccer team supposedly of all the school rejects - which include Leon a boy from her previous school. It's cleat they have a history but we don't find out what from this 1st volume.

So this is basically balls, but with "goths" instead of gays.

What can I say - loathed the artwork and while the story is ok it doesn't live up to the title gothic sports - having no concept what a goth student really is - this really fails to capture the goth ascetic. It's bottom of the barrel sports manga and sucks as fashion manga - one of the students designs "goth" outfits for the team - which could have worked really nicely if a) the characters were edgy and interesting b) the artwork was any good and c) if there was some reason behind it.

While to core concept of this is solid I really felt it was poorly executed and doubt I'll be seeking out subsequent volumes any time soon.

A girl creates her own soccer team when she's not accepted by the other kids at her school and even creates her own little goth girl uniforms to go along with it.

A curious manga that it feels more American and thus doesn't feel as authentic. It's an odd one but I like the message that if you're not accepted, still push through- and in her case, she created her own team.

The characters are sweet if a little one dimensional, the art work is pretty adorable and the concept is fun; a decent start to a manga series if not a little simple (simple is not necessarily bad though).

Gothic sports
Art: If you look around the internet or other reviews you would be shocked to find this is a german artist not a japanese one amazing right? The artwork is amazing and fluid if you didn't know you could have sworn this was made by japan it has a flare and style all it's own while still clearly being manga style A

Characters: The characters are lack luster and forgettable while the art style is amazing it also makes the characters seem similar mainly the lead and the rival girl look to much alike Anya is....undetermined in this manga the characters just move the story along but really don't have much of a personality or clear logical reasoning example Anya's whole reason for going to this school is to join a sports team and she has no practice in many sports to begin with. What? Characters that could be interesting don't even get names like the cute Goth boy in that goth clique yeah he doesn't have a name they didn't even give him a bio page in here like they did for leon but he's cute and thats about it background characters don't even have names just are there. C

Story: FLAT and DULL Gothic sports sounds interesting however the first three chapters in a 6 chapter book is all about anya not getting into sports because “You overestimate your ability” the last three chapters is about her rebelling and making her own soccer team although we never see them play...ever..... This story could have been amazing and really be about a group of misfits over coming the odds instead we get a new girl who is NOT goth to begin with automaticly accepted into the goth clicque with out knowing the names of anyone, automaticly becomes the target for the class bully, and doesn't get into the sports they want because they are not interested in new members. The group of misfits arn't misfits they are her goth friends also what school is this? If this is a high school why is there 14 year olds? And if it's not why is there a 20 year old? It's really odd once you start questioning it. There was also some history between two characters that even though the author tries to build it up for suspense comes off as “and whats the story come on?” un explained and in the grand scheme of things un necessary and unimportent. In short this book was easy to put down and really held little to no interest for goth or sports fans also the author should look up the term “Gothic lolita” because what they put...yeah not it. F

Cover:Anya on the cover in her gothic uniform although it seems more british punk but whatever she looks pretty its not very eye catching and easily passable in a bookstore however it is pretty C

Rating: T for teen

Company: Tokyopop (out of business)

My rating : 2 of 5 Goth? And sports? But most of all goth and misfits what can go wrong?..so much I was highly disappointed in this book things that could have been solved in one chapter or two pages was drawn out into more then one chapter we never see the sports and the only hot goth guy has no name the story seemed like a drawn out contemporary with very little gothic action we were promised goths and sports and got neither

I believe this is Anike Hage's first manga series with a major publisher and while the premise seems entertaining enough, the presentation really doesn't hold it together, resulting in an "enh"-okay comic.

The gothic clothing, which is supposed to be the feature of the series, is incidental within the actual story. The newly founded team needs something to attract new members and so one of the girls quickly sews together red and black skirts and tops to be paired with thigh-baring striped stockings. Very practical for sports. Oh, and the boys get to wear black capris.
...I thought this was supposed to be the school's first all-girl soccer team?

There is some interesting character interaction: why does Anya hate Leon so? The mystery is what motivates me to read the second volume. That, and both volumes just happened to be available from my local library. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered to buy this manga.

The manga-ka needs to step up the clothing aspect, I think, in order to give any credibility to her series' title. I'm wavering on whether to say this is a good first attempt. I know producing a manga is hard work, but still...perhaps a little more thought could have gone into this.

2) English Review
What can you say about this manga in the end? The writing and drawing style were ok, the story moved at an acceptable pace and nothing is actually bad. You can give the author credit as her protagonist wants to start a soccer/football team and you don't see that often in manga but the rest of it was pretty bland and known. The title is also kind of arbitrary as they only wear the Goth clothes to attract attention.
At its basics there is nothing to object to here but it is nothing for me.

Kurz-Meinung:

Picked this book to pass on for the manga sweepstake. I never brought anymore for the series and I don't think I ever will. Don't get me wrong I would read them if they came my way but I'm not sure how the sports bit would go down with me in the next couple of books. I read this again yesterday and still found the story alright. I liked the characters and I love there cute outfits :) That would make a good cosplay! The drawings are pretty good. I like that style of manga. I don't know what it is about manga that makes it so hard to give away. I have loads of it that I've only read once and unlikely to read again but I always try and keep them. I need to get over this problem!

*sigh* My initial feeling about this being a gimmick title was true.
Sorry kids, but "outcasts" who can't make the sports team plus one gothic lolita friend who can sew, do not equal "gothic lolita sports."
I'll give the 2nd volume a try, because I know that it's hard to do more than introduce (a whole sports team worth of) characters and get the plot moving much in one volume.
Doesn't hold a candle to "Dolls" or "Tarot Cafe" or even "Wallflower" and "XXXholic" for goth-inspired pretty-spooky art. But, yeah. S'ok.

Anya wants to play basketball or soccer at her new school, but is rejected by both official teams so she decides to form her own soccer team. Anya makes new friends (and enemies) and deals with a mysterious man from her past, all while cobbling together a team of misfits in cool uniforms.

I really enjoyed this book! The storyline flowed well and the pacing was steady. The characters were interesting and I liked the artwork. I already have the next two in the series on hold.

I read Gothic Sports the first time in 2007 when I was still a teenager. And I loved it. Since I never had the chance to finish it, I decided to give it another go. I was so disappointed! The main idea isn’t ground breaking but has potential, unfortunately the execution is quite bad. The characters are flat, the drawings very basic and many plot points absolutely silly. I couldn’t even force myself through more than 2 volumes.

This series seems to be one of those with a slow start, so I hope it will pick up later on.

I like the idea of the mostly girls' soccer team and their pretty gothic uniforms, but I feel like some of the girls let petty personal things - like arguments they had in the past with *fellow* team members of the opposite sex - get in the way of the team really achieving what they are setting out to do.

I was really impressed with this book the first time I read it (I was really unsure as to whether it was from Japan or not, and then realized the creator is German, and was duly impressed with her ability to mimic the Japanese elements of comics.) Now, while it's still fun and I like the girl oriented sports, plus goth sensibility, I don't know that it's great. Fun, sure. Great? Not so sure.

This is a pretty good manga. I have read two volumes so far and it is very entertaining. There is a decent amount of characters they give you at the start so its a little hard to keep track of all of them but, it fun to see a group of what they call rejects get something going for them. To bad this series only made it to volume 4.

Cute story of Anya who changes schools to join a sports team. Too short for basketball, and the only soccer team is all boys, Anya conspires with a few others to form a championship team. They decide to style themselves as Goths to make a statement and stand out on campus. It's a cute story and I am sure my students will eat these up.

Cute story about a girl who doesn't get to play on the boys football team (soccer) and subsequently tries to found her own team. Because she is new to the school it is also about finding friends an fitting in.
It is very nicely drawn and a sweet and fast read even though the plot isn't very gripping.

Not bad, I liked the idea of the story and how Anna refused to give up, however I was sorta conflicted about my feelings towards a few of the characters. The art was pleasant and the dialogue was realistic. It's an overall good start to the series, i'll be curious to see what happens next.
