What exactly happened to Anya in this volume? :(

I'm sad and disappointed by her harshness of them not winning and just being very unsportsmanlike in her attitude when she HAD really wanted this team. I was however impressed with the Coach. Way to go to fix things there!

I was more invested in this volume due to the action and still think these have some of the prettiest manga covers I've seen, but I felt the story was a little bit all over the place. I wasn't sure of the sense of time and how everything was related to one another.

I do plan to read the third volume because I own it, but I hope there is some reconciliation and a heartfelt change in Anya's attitude. I really liked her character in volume one and though I think Delia is an amazing character, I don't want her brightness to replace the brightness Anya had.

The art however is gorgeous! I loved the art previously, but you can see how the mangaka has grown even more!

I thought Anyas character fell a bit flat in this volume, which was disappointing :(

Also the sports aspect was super lacking.
I'll probably still continue reading because I do like a lot of the characters.

Delia was foreshadowed to be queer and I just REALLY hope it's not baiting, her turbulent homoerotic relationship with Marie is one of the only things I'm interested in tbh.

Also why are these school kids like, 19 and 20?? Is this normal in Germany??

The art's still cute, but character actions and reasoning is kinda weak and inconsistent.

Dropped
• I felt like the art work was decent but missing a lot of stuff. There were hardly any backgrounds or location shots.
• The characters came across flat and had no depth or dimension to them.
• The main character is an idiot, beyond normal idiots. (I could go on about this, but I don’t want to torture myself.) But she doesn’t even stick with her idiot-ness and will jump to not being an idiot like a glitch in a game.
• The plot was weak and seemed to skip over developments that could have made it stronger.
• I understand that this is very much a cultural thing, and not just a “this book” kind of thing, but having all the characters underweight is not realistic for girls playing sports & not accurate. (This coming from a soccer player of +11 years)

But these are my opinions/what I took from it, and are not the absolute truth of the manga. :)

Mostly drama, no sport

I thought the first volume was just leaning on character intros, but vol 2 is mostly teen soap drama. There's little in the way of sports except they're on the field during a match. I like ensemble casts, the arts decent, and there continues to be no romance, but the melodrama is a bit much.

Overall Rating: A+
Synopsis: It's a classic tale of girl goes to new elite high school. Girl then wants to join mostly boys soccer team before tournament. Drama ensues. Girl decides to form her own team. Only a couple of her friends want to join. Girl decides to make team more interesting. Fortunately, one of her friends is a gothic lolita. Hrm... Hilarity and cute uniforms ensue. Boys join and whine about skirts. Boys uniforms are made. Team has to prove itself against aforementioned soccer team. Dun Dunnn DUNNNN!

I read the back of Gothic Sports and had to pick it up. I'm not a big sports guy, but when I read the sentence "Say hello to the world's first Gothic-Lolita soccer team!", I knew I had to check it out. I wasn't disappointed.

The manga follows Anya, the new girl at Lucrece High School, who wants to join one of their elite sports teams before a big tournament. She meets some other misfits, including the gothic lolita character I mentioned above, develops a rival, and there is a mysterious boy from her past. It isn't explained in the first volume, but apparently the cute, and mysterious Leon did something to really piss Anya off in elementary school and she still holds a grudge.

So, not only is there the pretty fucking awesome concept of gothic lolita soccer, but there are healthy doses of drama and hilarity. A fun manga for when you aren't in the mood for action or anything intense.

I was a little disappointed in the second volume of Gothic Sports. I really liked the first, but the pacing seemed to be all off this time around. The big soccer game was about 75% talking when it should have been 100% exciting. The gameplay was good when it happened, but it took forever. Also, the English script needs a lot more polish. It's often stiff and awkward.

Beautiful art, though. Anike Hage is a real talent. Her art and storytelling remind me less of Japanese language manga, and more like a hybrid of North American cartoonists Chynna Clugston and Takeshi Miyazawa.

A disappointing second part to the series. To get Anya's team accepted by the principal they have to play the schools primary football team.

Even though the drawing style is very pretty, the book is a bit of a let down. The whole story is basically Anya moping around un different places and being incredibly annoying. Apart from Leon we don't get to know any of the other characters and there are plenty to be introduced.
Hopefully the 3rd part will pick up it's pace.

I read the book Gothic Sports written by Anike Hage. If I were to rate it it would break my scale. Four stars for sure. I gave ti this rating because it was something I would like to read again. It's amazing. I would recommend it to everybody because it made me want to read it. It was a feeling and I wanted to find out the ending.

Even though I enjoy the drawing style and coloured pages at the start of the book, the characters are a bit of a let down and it is a little hard to follow. The whole story is Anya moping on a football pitch in the rain but some of the other characters look a lot like Anya to me so I kept getting confused.

A little better than the first volume. Not much soccer action, not much to do with gothic clothing other than it's just being there, and with the mystery of Anya's hatred for Leon being solved, I personally don't have much interest in continuing to read this series.

The series started out well, but this second volume just wasn't very good. The plot doesn't develop much more and any interest in the characters and their problems was lost.

Not bad, though to be honest it apparently wasn't very memorable, because I don't really remember what happened.
