SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY WITH A SMIDGEN OF HOMICIDE

USA Today Bestselling author Tonya Kappes brings you southern and quirky characters in her mystery series. Her stories are charged with humor, friendship, family and life in small southern towns.

In the heart of the charming town of Normal, Kentucky, Mae West has patiently awaited her wedding day to Hank Sharp. Friends and family gather, the crisp autumn air carries the scent of fallen leaves, and laughter dances through the warm Southern breeze. Everything is set for a picture-perfect day, a celebration of love in a town nestled by the serene Daniel Boone National Forest.

But in the South, they say, "Mishaps at weddings are like the rain in April—unexpected but not unusual." Just as Mae is about to say her vows, a bolt of lightning struck. The news hit like a tornado—literally—a young girl had been murdered, and a tornado has torn through the town, turning everything upside down, including the carefully laid wedding plans.

In a town where mysteries were as common as fireflies on an autumn night, Mae West and the Laundry Club ladies venture where others fear to tread, unearthing long-buried secrets and confronting a darkness that threatened to shatter the tranquility of their beloved Normal.

Another question is on everyone minds, will Mae and Hank finally tie the knot?

Here comes the bride or does she? Mae isn’t having cold feet but it seems nothing is going smoothly and the wedding is just a few days away. While Mae is trying to finish up all the wedding prep Hank is still working on his case of the missing teenager. Will the wedding actually happen? Can Hank solve his case before the wedding?

Oh were to start, I mean we are visiting Normal, KY where nothing is normal not even Mae and Hank’s wedding. Mae is so stressed and nothing seems to be going right for her. Most of us can relate those feelings maybe not about a wedding but life. The laundry club ladies are there for Mae and help her every step of the way. This is a great group of friends. The wedding is a large portion of the book but this would be a Camper and Criminals book without Mae getting involved in a police investigation. The mystery is well plotted with plenty of surprises and twists.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, I have not been influenced by anyone.

I have loved this series from the very beginning, and now finally Mae’s wedding to Hank is about to happen…

We have a new resident in Normal that is proving to be a lot like Mae in the curious side and I can see her being helpful in the future.

It was entertaining, full of twists and turns and I didn’t completely guess whodunnit until Mae did. Highly recommend to my cozy friends.

Mae feels like she's experiencing one disaster after another, leaving her unsure if she'll ever get married. The wedding came to a standstill when a tornado hit, but Dottie pulled a rabbit out of her hat. Could've knocked me over with a feather!

Hank gets a clue for the case of the missing teen at the worst possible time. Keisha Collier is no longer missing, but there are still unanswered questions about her death. Keisha's dad wants Hank to continue to look into his daughter's murder. A delayed honeymoon gives Mae and The Laundry Club Ladies time for sleuthing. Mae will have to face a difficult situation and visit an old enemy. A new resident is proving to be helpful. The Laundry Club just may have picked up a new member!

I've been waiting for Mae and Hank's wedding, but I should know that nothing normal happens in Normal, Kentucky. There's quite a few surprises and a twist at the end.

I received an advanced reader's copy and voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

Just when I think this series can’t get any better, Tonya goes and pulls out all the stops. I have followed this series since the beginning. Mae and Hank’s relationship has had their ups and downs and I have been there with them through it all.

This book gave me the mystery that I love along with an appreciation for love, family, and friends. I was feeling everything right along with Mae as if this was my own wedding. I was sad for the young girl and her family but then also disheartened wondering if the wedding will happen. This book gave me a sense of community that I love from Normal and Happy Trails Campground.

I really enjoyed the latest installment in the Campers and Criminals Series. It’s right before Mae and Hank’s Wedding and everything seems to be going wrong. From issues in getting their marriage license to a serious storm that blocks roads so people can’t get to the campground and causes damage at other venues, how is this wedding ever going to happen?

In addition the missing girl Hank has been looking for is finally dead in a creek in the campground vicinity. Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies want to solve this mystery as soon as possible.

I love how Mae, the Laundry Club Ladies and the residents of Normal, KY band together to help each other during a weather emergency.

I was fortunate to receive an Advanced Copy of this wonderful read.

Witness, Woods, & Wedding is another exciting installment in Kappes' campers and criminals cozy mystery series. I usually look forward to new books in this series, but I couldn't wait to read this one in particular. Mae and Hank's wedding day has finally arrived. The guests are arriving in Normal, the final touches for the big day are being done, and the I Do's are nearly here when a HUGE storm hits and a body is found. Mae and Hank's big day definitely doesn't go how they or Mary Elizabeth planned.

Kappes sets up an entertaining read that is a definite payoff for Mae and Hank's nuptials. I really enjoyed this story with everything leading up to the big day. I especially loved the little trips down memory lane and the sense of community as everyone comes together for the big day. The book's mystery is also well done full of enough twist and turns to keep the reader engaged. Overall Witness, Woods, & Wedding proved to be a great read that I would most definitely recommend.

I found that I could do without the wedding stuff in the book. It was all a bit sappy to me. I thought Mae was really insensitive when she got in the car with Hank and Adam and said they were going to sign the marriage license on the way to see Keisha’s car. I don’t understand how she could think this was ok. Adam is going to see his missing daughter’s car to see if there are clues to her disappearance, and all Mae can think about is a marriage license.

When Hank was looking at her and telling her to stop, I thought he would let her have it with her behaviour, but he didn’t. This is an example of her personality that I don’t like. She comes off as a bit selfish and not considering other people’s own lives. I liked the mystery and it reminded me of the true crime podcasts I like to listen to. I’m confused by who Kristen is. Who is she and what does she have to do with Mae?

"Witness, Woods, &Wedding," by Tonya Kappes, keeps you wanting to continue reading to see what happens next. Mae and Hank have come a long way in their relationship and may finally get to tie the knot. As they are planning for their upcoming wedding, the town of Normal, Kentucky, is hit by severe weather, and a missing person that Hank has been searching for has shown up. Mae and Hank may not have the wedding they were planning on, but being surrounded by the ones they love is enough for them. I absolutely love how the two can deal with everything thrown at them and still come out on top. This book is one of my favorites in this series and who doesn't just love the Laundry Club Ladies.

“No one can say they’ve had a wedding like ours.” That was an understatement!

This is the best cozy mystery to date in the Campers and Criminals series! The writing is tight and descriptive, with several strands of intrigue connecting to the missing person case that Hank, a private investigator, has been working on for months. After Hank updates his boss and the sheriff’s office on the case, the only thing Mae and Hank want to do in the next couple days is to say their vows, be pronounced husband and wife, and fly to their honeymoon on the beach.

Hank’s case suddenly blows up. The weather definitely blew up, and almost every other little thing so beautifully planned didn’t work out. Murder. Messed up bridal gown. Rings not ready. The groomer couldn’t bathe the dogs to be in the wedding. A little bitty tornado. Airport closed – for at least a week. Well, there never has been anything normal in Normal, Kentucky! What a wild story they will tell their children and grandchildren someday if the wedding ever happens!

Mae, her best friends of the Laundry Club ladies, and her adoptive mother Mary Elizabeth have planned the day before and the day of the wedding perfectly. The day before the wedding began well as every Southern wedding should. Mae isn’t a bridezilla, but everything that doesn’t go as planned was essential to the wedding, and when the bucket of troubles overflowed, Mae had a meltdown. She has tried to be patient and go with the flow. Granny Agnes, who helped raise Hank and adores both of them, had a long talk with her. Agnes’s soothing words were just what Mae needed.

Hank should have known better. He hoped that, with all the last-minute preparations for their wedding, Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies would be too busy to snoop into another murder. Then Hank and Mae find each other in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

Mae reminisces throughout on what brought her to Normal and how she and Hank met, including both high points and potholes. These encouraged her to keep going through the challenges. I like how each highlight is woven into what Mae is doing as she ponders on it. The new reader or someone returning to the series after several months will learn or recall the essentials of Mae, her family, and her friends.

There were several plot twists and a red herring that tickled the speed higher on the already fast pace of the novel. I can’t believe how many suspects I went through, even ones the ladies didn’t seriously consider. Whodunit was a real surprise to me, as I didn’t seriously think that person did it. The author surprises me almost every time, and this was a very sad surprise. As far as whether they get hitched or go on a honeymoon – you’ll find that out when you read this fabulous mystery! I highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates well-written Southern cozy mysteries, are fans of the author or series, or weddings, with enough fun and suspense to leave the reader with a huge, appreciative sigh at the end.

From a thankful heart: I voluntarily reviewed an unedited copy of this novel, and this is my honest review.

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Mae has to put the finishing touches for her wedding. She is worried about the weather but she is telling herself that the weather will cooperate. When the weather gets bad and a body is discovered, Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies will have to get busy solving another murder.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. I felt like I was right there when the tornado warnings were issued and when the rain was torrential. The writing style flows smoothly and the book was an easy read. The mystery was well plotted and not easily solved.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well plotted cozy mystery. Get this book (and series), you will not be disappointed.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

Mae West has said it best, “Normal, Kentucky. Where nothing was normal.” That still is the case with ‘Witness, Woods, & Wedding’, which is Tonya Kappe’s latest addition to the Camper & Criminal Cozy Mystery series. Yes, this book did get released a few days early which means we are incredibly lucky. I have to say that this book gave me first-book vibes. I enjoyed how it had that throwback to it whether that was something meant to be, or I was the only one feeling that way it was nice to see.

I say it’s first book vibes as it is just Mae trying to make sure the wedding of her dreams to Hank happens and goes as planned but with her luck and just how life is nothing happens smoothly. But don’t worry, the whole gang and town are there along with Violet Rhinehammer who came back to take in the wedding. Even though nothing goes right it’s nice to see how strong the love is between Hank and Mae and knowing at the end of the day the love they have is all that counts.

The case that is in ‘Witness, Woods, & Wedding’ is one that Hank has been working on for the past few books. I like how this case has been slowly building up and boy is it one that will make you keep turning that page because you need to find out what happens in the end. I really don’t know how Tonya can keep producing all these different cases but they sure are never the same twice and I am always guessing wrong how it’s going to end.

Now with this cozy mystery, there is no sizzle rating, but the mystery and characters make this a 5-star book. Tonya Kappes was able to give us all the characters we have come to love and a case no one saw coming in ‘Witness, Woods, & Wedding’.

As the book is now released it is available on Amazon. If you are a Kindle Unlimited member you get the added benefit of having this book included in your membership. To keep up on all new releases and more news on future releases you can head to Tonya’s website.

**I would like to thank Tonya Kappes for the ARC copy of this book. Getting the ARC Copy did not influence my thoughts on the book as they are all my own.**

Witness, Woods, and Wedding is the 33rd book in the Camper & Criminals series but it's as fresh and exciting as the first book. Reading Witness, Woods, and Wedding is just like coming back home to Normal, Kentucky. I love the familiarity of the characters, the hominess of the setting, and the comfort knowing Mae, Hank, and the Laundry Club Ladies are keeping everyone safe.

Wedding bells are ringing for Mae and Hank. There is excitement and happiness in the air. There is also an undercurrent of dread and worry. There’s a huge storm brewing and destined to hit Normal right before the wedding, causing Mae all sorts of anxiety. Everywhere she turns, something unexpected and unpleasant happens, and Mae wonders if she and Hank are even supposed to get married. On top of those things, Hank is still working the missing persons case involving a 19-year-old who disappeared months ago. With a break in the case, Hank is distracted but not enough to derail the wedding. The tornado that rips through Normal, however, has no such consideration.

As wedding plans change and the missing teenager is found, Normal is anything but. The discovery of the teenager changes from a missing persons case to homicide. With Hank, Mae, and the Laundry Club Ladies on the case, the culprit never stands a chance.

The book was full of twists, turns, red herrings, and shifts in direction. The mystery would start out going one direction, then completely shift a new way. The suspense build-up was written well and intensified until the very end. I was kept guessing about the mysterious disappearance and reappearance of Keisha, as well as her death.

As with the rest of the books in the series, the mystery isn't the only thing going on in the book. Tonya Kappes did a terrific job weaving the main storyline and several smaller ones together. The characters are wonderfully crafted, realistically written, and I feel like I'm coming home to Normal with every book in the series.

I am out of breath running around with Mae and her big binder getting ready for the biggest day of her life. Everyone has been waiting for Mae and Hank to tie the knot and here it is a mere forty-eight hours away. I’m tired just watching Mae drag her oversize binder around checking off her to do list. The question is , will the wedding take place?

Mother Nature certainly doesn’t care about a wedding and is threatening Normal, Kentucky with a big storm. Really? On the biggest day of Mae’s life a storm has to come through? To top it off Hank is deep in an investigation of a missing person. It is imperative that he meet Mae today to get their marriage license. I sure hope his investigation doesn’t hold him up. Can you feel the tension in the air?

Chaos is everywhere as Mae and Hanks’s upcoming wedding is falling apart. I loved how the town comes together when everything starts to shatter before the bride and groom’s eyes. Poor Mae is beside herself as her dream of a perfect wedding starts to crumble around her. Someone very wise told Mae, “In the midst of a storm, they reveal our strengths and the bonds that hold us together.”

Mae has once again inserted herself into another investigation right in the middle of wedding plans. She and her group have decided that the case must be solved and they are perfect for the task. I laughed and cried throughout the story as the author delivers another great book in this series. Do Hank and Mae get married? Is the guilty person caught in the death of a young woman? Grab a copy and get ready to read the most anticipated story in this fun series.

I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. The review is my own opinion.

The preview gives us a good idea that Tonya is going to keep us on our toes, as usual.

Then, chapter one. A big storm seems to be brewing. And Mae is arriving at the airport, though until she texts someone where she parked, we aren’t sure if she’s off on a trip or picking someone up. And that someone just happens to be Violet Rhinehammer.

Meanwhile, it’s T minus 48 hours to the wedding, Mae is trying to check the last of her to do’s out of the wedding binder and Hank is working on the case of a missing teenager, Keshia. Keshia has run away several times, but has always come home after a couple days. But now it’s been months. Mae is hopeful that it’s like her situation, since she climbed out her window when she was 18 and took a bus to New York City. Will she be right?

As the investigation goes on, the wedding is just around the corner and before we know it, it’s rehearsal dinner day. But the big storm hits, and I’m left wondering if the wedding is going to happen. However, as usual, Dottie has a few tricks up her sleeve and jumps into action, and out of her own mouth we hear “You can’t milk a cow with your hands in your pockets.”

When the truth comes out, the sadness of Keshia’s death washes over you and you can’t help but hope that Hank and Mae will figure out what happened. And let’s face it, once the Laundry Club Ladies are involved, we will get our answers! I thought I had this book all figured out, and then Tonya worked that final twist in. And the ending has me wanting the next book now! I received an arc copy of this book, but all opinions are my own. Tonya has done it again.

Here comes the bride... finally! Or will Mae and Hank finally get married? It seems that everything that can go wrong, is going wrong. If you have read any of these books, you know nothing is normal in Normal, Kentucky. So, of course, the wedding of the century could not possibly happen without some sort of catastrophe(s). When a tornado tears through town, it seems the wedding day is ruined beyond repair. Then as if that is not enough, a dead body floats up on the river.

Wedding or not you will not keep the Laundry Club Ladies from doing their part in investigating. They will not be held back. Once again Tonya Kappes uses her quick wit with a pen (or a computer) to provide us with a great mystery with plenty of misdirection for suspects, and it always has plenty of laugh out loud humor. I have been reading these stories for so long that I feel as if I am meeting up with friends every time I open another book in this series. These ladies are quirky, full of sass and actually quite observant. They do everything with flair and their own sense of style. Dottie always provides slap stick entertainment with her "sayings" that will leave you in stitches. We have a guest appearance of none other than the diva of journalism, Violet Rhinehammer. The Southern cozy queen has struck gold again.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

"You know, sweetheart, storms come into our lives when we least expect them," she began, her voice soft and soothing. "They can shake us to our core, make us question everything, but they also reveal our strengths and the bonds that hold us together."
- Mary Elizabeth from A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery series.

The wedding… All odds were stacked against Mae and Hank getting married, including a dress wrongly altered, a pet salon Water pipe burst, a storm that causes all roads in town to be blocked with debris including the road for the person who will officiate the wedding, etc. And let’s not forget the lady that has been missing 2 months - whose father hired Hank, the private investigator - to locate. The main questions are, will Hank find the woman and will Mae and Hank finally get married?

Read this and find out! The usual Laundry Club ladies do their usual snooping and there’s even a prison meeting between Mae and a woman that tried to kill her. There’s also a lot of poetic description of Daniel Boone National Forest. It’s easy to see the beauty all around and I always crave sitting in front of a fire with all my friends while roasting marshmallows and listening to the nearby flowing stream and soothing cricket sounds. Sigh, so peaceful.

Next is Book 34 which was released only 2 days ago on November 26th: “Elves, Evergreens, & Evidence” from Tonya Kappes A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery series.

Everything is set for a picture-perfect day, a celebration of love in a town nestled by the serene Daniel Boone National Forest.

Or is it?

Finally, the day we have waited 32 books for! lol Does it go smooth and without chaos? Does anything Mae and Hank do go smooth and without chaos? NO!
Loved how everything turned out. It was written perfectly for those two and wouldn't want to see it go down any other way. Everything goes wrong, Mother Nature is not co-operating, and of course... a murder mystery to solve. I absolutely LOVED all the trips down memory lane and the friendship bracelets.... YES!

This was a great way to start my new year! Can't wait to pick up the next one.

"Y'all know, friendship ain't just about bein' there when it's all sunshine and roses. It's about standin' by each other's side through the storms too. May-bell-ine, you’ve been the lighthouse for many of us through rough seas. We're just so proud to be here, by your side, today and always."

Witness, Woods & Weddings thirty-third cozy mystery in the Camper & Criminals Mystery series. Back in Normal, Kentucky, it’s finally time for Mae and Hank’s wedding day that has been a long time coming, but nothing goes as planned. The weather doesn’t cooperate with a tornado rushing through town and a missing girl turns up murdered. Instead of letting this get her down for too long, Mae embraces the change and, as always, jumps into this murder investigation feet first.

I love this series so much and am always excited to read more. By this point in most cozy mystery series I am ready to jump ship, but even after thirty-three books I see no end in sight for this series. These mysteries are quick, enjoyable and captivating. I love Mae West and her Laundry Club Ladies and always love joining them again on another mystery. I can’t think of a thing to critique in this book, I fully enjoyed it from start to finish and can’t wait to read the next book when I get a chance. If you haven’t explored this series yet, I definitely recommend it to cozy mystery fans. It looks like a really long series, and in some ways it is, but these books are so quick and easy to read that you will be as wrapped up in them as I am!

As the wedding date approaches, Mae has a final list of things she needs to get done.
She has a plan, a man she can love forever, and a wonderful support group of friends around her. Even foe turned friend, Violet, has arrived to celebrate the blessed nuptual event.

If only Mother Nature will cooperate.
Anyone who has ever planned an outdoor wedding can relate to the tension but this is NORMAL Kentucky. (Decidedly not a normal community.)

Do disasters really have to come in threes? You'll have to read to find out for yourself. Will Hank and Mae make it down the aisle? Remember, it wasn't long ago when the bridesmaids dresses went up in smoke. (Literally)

Tensions rise, unexpected guests arrive, Mae and friends attract their usual (but even if you have not read each book in this series before this you'll be up to speed before you know it.)
Mother Nature has her say but with the right support, can you ever keep a good sleuth down?
Come along for the ride and the delicious treats. Camping hacks also included.
You'll be hooked and have to hang on because this is far from the end!

…and here comes a tornado!

Mae West is finally marrying the man of her dreams, Hank Sharp, and she has planned the perfect wedding. But nothing is normal in Normal, KY! She sensed the shift in the air and knew a storm was coming, but she never thought it would be a tornado. Mae is trying to keep up with all the plans that go haywire while helping Hank continue his search for Keisha, a missing teenager.

No matter what happens, Mae has the support of her “family,” which includes her adoptive mother and brother, Hank’s granny and sister, residents of Normal, and the closest, most supportive friends in the Laundry Club Ladies. Keisha’s body washes up near the campground, so the Laundry Club Ladies are on the case…along with a possible new friend!

As with other installments of the Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery series, the reader is kept guessing while following along with Mae and her friends. The mystery is skillfully written, the scenery comes to life with vivid detail, and the plot is entertaining, especially with Dottie’s wit and wisdom.

I received an ARC of this book, but all opinions are mine. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

An impending storm and subsequent tornado play a huge role in this book. Will Mae and Hank be able to get married or will Mother Nature foil Mae’s wedding plans?

I really enjoyed the stroll down memory lane throughout the story. Mae has a lot of support through her family and friends as she worries about the weather. She keeps on powering through with the plans, even though things keep going wrong for her. A surprise appearance by Violet Rhinehammer for the wedding was fun.

I had completely forgotten about the missing teen Hank was looking for in the previous book. Of course, this case heated up while Mae was trying to get Hank to sign the wedding license. There were plenty of suspects in the disappearance and subsequent murder of Keisha. I was completely surprised by the murderer and the reason for the murder.

I think readers will enjoy how Mae and Hank finally got married in this book because ultimately it felt like the kind of wedding Mae probably wanted—small and intimate. It will be interesting to see how married life will affect them with Mae’s independent streak and Hank not wanting her to get killed while investigating murders.

Mae and Hank are getting ready for their wedding and of course, things don't go smoothly. Hank gets a clue on the missing woman he's looking for and that leads to even more surprises and interruptions to the wedding plans. Add in a tornado and all the craziness that comes with that and then a body showing up and things just keep getting more complicated. Dottie saves the day, so the wedding happens just not the one they planned but perfect for Hank and Mae. Then both Hank, Mae and the Laundry Club Ladies get caught up in solving the murder and there are a few big surprises there. In the end the killer is caught, and Hank and Mae get to go on their honeymoon. The best thing about the campgrounds is the people there become your friends and it becomes the place you keep wanting to go back there. The characters become the friends you always want to hang out with because they are good people and there's never a dull moment. Can't wait to see what happens next. Highly recommend the book and the series, once you read one, you're hooked.
