This review is a copy of the transcript of my video review on Jade Shards

Jade Shards is an incredibly well-written farewell titles for the fans of Green Bone Saga.

“This one’s for the fans.”—Fonda Lee

Reading Jade Shards felt bittersweet. How could it not be? I am happy to attain this, but Jade Shards has been confirmed to be the final set of new stories in the world of The Green Bone Saga. I am not ashamed to say I am a diehard enthusiast of the The Green Bone Saga series. I consider the main trilogy in The Green Bone Saga the best trilogy I have ever read. Upon the completion of the main trilogy, my heart soared with joy when Fonda Lee said there would be two more books in the series. The first one is The Jade Setter of Janloon prequel novella that I read and loved last year, and the other one is Jade Shards, a collection of four prequel short stories centering on the early life of Ayt Mada, Kaul Lan, Kaul Hilo, Wen, Anden, and Shae. And this is precisely the nostalgic and heartfelt prequel titles for us, fans of the series, to part ways with the world and characters.

“These books are how I discovered I’m a character writer. Seeing readers fall in love with these fictional people, as I have, has been one of my greatest professional satisfaction.”—Fonda Lee

A few things of note first before I start talking about each title. Although Jade Shards is structured as a collection of prequel short stories, these four stories are presented in chronological order, and it turned Jade Shards into a form of a full novella. But as Lee herself said in the introduction, familiarity with the world and characters are necessary to enjoy Jade Shards to the fullest. This is not like The Jade Setter of Janloon, which can be treated as an appetizer or dessert of the series. I am so appreciative of Fonda Lee for saying this. This shows care for the reader's enjoyment. Many fantasy authors I know, every time they write a prequel or sequel series, seem to mention their newest book in the same specific world can be treated as a standalone to drive up sales. Even when the main characters are still the same! I am not a fan of this practice. Connection with the characters and the world means a lot, especially when we are going to start reading a sequel series. So if you have not read the main trilogy in The Green Bone Saga yet, I implore you to read them first before reading Jade Shards. Or at least, read Jade City first. You will do yourself a huge favor. Now, let's proceed to my brief thoughts on each short story.

Picture: Jade Shards by Charis Loke

The Witch and Her Friend

The first short story, The Witch and Her Friend, takes place 25 years before the events of Jade City. The blurb may lead you to think this is a story with a high focus on Ayt Mada, and you are not mistaken. Ayt Mada always has that intimidating presence whenever she appears, and it is the same here, but this is not the full scope of the story. The Witch and Her Friend is a snapshot of events and friendship between Aun Ure and Ayt Mada. Specifically in three timeframes; when Ayt Mada was 13 years old, 19 years old, and finally, 24 years old. However, the story itself is not told from the perspective of Ayt Mada, but instead, it is told from the point of view of Aun Ure. This title and direction are something I did not expect, and the story is better for it. If you have read the main trilogy, you might know who Aun Ure—or The Witch—is. I will not be the bearer of spoilers, in case you don’t know, but let’s say this. Not only The Witch and Her Friend is an instantaneous display of how good and efficient Lee is at characterizations, dialogues, developments, and time jumps in her narrative, but this title also enhanced some moments in the main trilogy. One pivotal moment in Jade Legacy felt more enriched with subtleties and significance for me now. It is a magnificent short story; a great choice to start the collection.

“A family can’t survive when divided by secrets. I learned that the hard way.”

Not Only Blood

Not Only Blood starts 3 years after The Witch and Her Friend. The second short story is the most family-focused title in the collection, and it several times brought a smile to my face. Told from the perspective of Lan, Not Only Blood delves into the relationship and interaction of the Kaul family back when none of them were in a position of power yet. Yes, you will see 23 years old Lan, 15 years old Hilo, 14 years old Shae, 6 years old Anden, and more in this title. The story itself centers around the cause and Lan’s insistence to adopt Anden into the Kaul family, and readers of the main trilogy will know just how important this decision is. However, what made this one stands out even further is seeing the relatively innocent days of the main characters—except Anden, who went through a lot of trauma here—from the main trilogy. As the title says, not only blood determines what forms a family. Lan made that clear here, and to me, it felt like a reunion seeing all my favorite characters in the series again. Even more so because I know how far each respective main character of The Green Bone Saga soar in the main trilogy. Some passages, like the one below, reflected that, and I couldn’t be happier. Not Only Blood is definitely one of my two favorite short stories in the collection. Or ever.

“Hilo, as unruly as he was at school, was too martially talented, too obviously destined to become a high-ranking Fist at the very least. No amount of suffered exasperation could blind the Pillar to the fact that his younger grandson, properly trained, would become a fearsome asset to the clan.”

Better Than Jade

Since Jade Shards was announced, way before I even knew the title of this short story, Better Than Jade was already destined to become one of my favorite short stories in the collection. Aside from how superbly written, everything comes down to a simple point: Kaul Hilo is one of my top favorite characters of all time. Honestly, reading Hilo going on grocery shopping would’ve been enough to earn a 5-star rating from me. I am that biased and attached to this character. And to have a romantic, sweet, and spicy story about Hilo and Wen, to go back to the days of their early courtships, from their first dates to their first sex scene, I absolutely loved it. This is the only title in the collection featuring two POV characters: Hilo and Wen, one of my favorite couples in the genre. Those who have read the main trilogy will understand this. The realistic depiction of the relationship between them, the up and down, the trust, the struggle, the understanding, and their love through the happiness and perilous hardship in their lives are nothing short of outstanding. It felt wonderful to go back to the days of their innocence when lives were still simpler. Not even five pages of detailed sex scenes, which usually bores me, in this title could diminish my enjoyment of being back with Hilo and Wen again. And it is not only about the relationship with Wen, of course, but the impactful respect that Hilo and the Maik Brothers have for each other. Better Than Jade is easily one of the finest short stories I've ever read.

“We’ve been friends since we were kids in the Academy. Why wouldn’t I also want your sister to have a good life? So what if she’s a stone-eye? Not all men are so superstitious they can’t see other good qualities in a person… A man can’t ignore his feelings about something important, no matter what.”

Granddaughter Cormorant

Finally, we arrived at the final title, Granddaughter Cormorant. This one is about Shae, and the story begins 3 and a half years before the events of Jade City. Granddaughter Cormorant gives more details on why Shae is not in Kekon at the beginning of Jade City. Unlike the previous three titles in the collection that were written in 2021, Granddaughter Cormorant is a title written and available exclusively to Jade Shards. Tense and meaningful dialogues with impact aren’t the only skillsets often wielded by Lee; terrific action scene is one of them. And Granddaughter Cormorant is the only title in the collection to exhibit that specific skill of Lee as a storyteller. I did not love this as much as the previous titles, but this is still a strong plot-focused short story to wrap up the collection.

“No matter how much jade Kaul Sen awarded to his granddaughter, no matter how many parties he threw for her or how much he bragged about his “best grandson” to his friends, he could not, even as the Pillar of the clan, give her true greenness, the simple respect accorded by and to men, friends and enemies alike, honestly earned.”

This is the end. With this review posted, I have written more or less 10,000 words of review in total for the books in the series. The Green Bone Saga is a special series for me. It will always be that way. I even spend my money on the expensive Subterranean Press hardcover edition of The Jade Setter of Janloon and Jade Shards because I love the series that much. And I will do my best to get the Subterranean Press edition of the main trilogy, too. Jade Shards is the bittersweet and heartfelt prequel stories to send us off on our next adventures. As Fonda Lee said at the beginning of the book, the Kaul family deserves their rest. But nothing can stop me from reading The Green Bone Saga again and again in the future. The collection of short stories in Jade Shards was written as a passion project, and I am thankful Fonda Lee decided to share them with the fans. Thank you so much, once again, for crafting The Green Bone Saga. It goes without saying I always look forward to reading Fonda Lee's books, whether in The Green Bone Saga or not. I believe the author's storytelling is a blessing to the genre, and if you haven't read The Green Bone Saga yet, do yourself a huge favor and witness the Kaul family's tale. And if you are a fan of the series already, well, you owe it to yourself to experience the early days of these characters in Jade Shards.

“A beautiful thing about stories is that they exist forever suspended in time. Opening a book transports you instantly to the time and place on the page. It’s easy to turn back the clock on the years, to flip to page one and begin the journey all over again. It turns out I wasn’t quite done with the Kaul family after all. But perhaps, they are done with me. After everything tragic and triumphant they’ve been through, they deserve their rest.”—Fonda Lee

real review: i loved getting these stories so much and i will miss these characters dearly until i decide to reread this series again because i don’t think i can go over a year without them. to be honest i think one of the best parts of these short stories was getting to read fonda lee’s thoughts about them and im so glad she wrote in her own thoughts after each short story explaining why she chose to write them and why they weren’t included in the main trilogy. this series will forever be a favorite.

I truly missed this world, which only heightened my excitement to read the third book. However, it also brought to light the various issues I have with the trilogy.

The first story centered on Ayt Mada was fascinating, particularly because it allowed us to see Anden’s mother, Aun Uremayada. This was the aspect that intrigued me the most. While we see Ayt Mada in her younger years, I felt she wasn’t significantly different from her portrayal in the trilogy—perhaps just a bit less distrustful. Aun Uremayada surprised me; I genuinely liked her and found learning more about her to be a very interesting experience.
I appreciated the author's effort to delve deeper into the Aun family, as their tragic fate adds significant depth to the narrative. Understanding their background provides valuable context for Anden's character and the challenges he faces, particularly in his relationship with Jade.

The second story is undeniably my favorite, primarily because it features my favorite characters from the trilogy, Anden and Lan. Reading about Lan again made me realize just how much I missed him and how I wish his story had unfolded differently. He consistently proves to be the only sibling truly deserving of respect and likability. Anden, on the other hand, remains perfect as always. I have nothing negative to say about him; he truly deserves all the good in life. This story illuminates the bond between Lan and Anden, clarifying why they are close and why Lan is Anden’s role model. It's a shame we didn’t get to see more of their dynamic in the trilogy; I just wish Lan had lived longer.

Regarding the third story about Hilo and Wen, it’s no surprise I didn’t care for it. Hilo is riddled with red flags, and Wen comes across as pathetic. This disappoints me greatly because she could have been such an interesting character if she weren’t so blindly devoted to Hilo. Frankly, both of them are unpleasant and judgmental, and they deserve each other. I struggled to engage with their supposed love story, especially knowing what happens in the third book from spoilers.

The final story about Shae and her journey on how she became an Espenien spy was quite engaging. It presented Shae in a more spoiled light, and we got to see how much Kaul Sen favored her. Nonetheless, Shae continues to be a challenging character for me to connect with; I often find myself fluctuating between liking and disliking her.

In conclusion, this collection is a valuable addition to the series, providing us with deeper insights into the characters we cherish from the trilogy.

every green bone saga fan needs to read jade shards for clear skin, watered crops, optimal hydration, 20/20 vision. it gave what it needed to give: tempting glimpses into the pasts of our favorite nepotism siblings. you'll feel painful familiarity seeing young versions of beloved characters while knowing what happens to them in the future.

i just continue to be impressed by how fonda lee's created such a rich lived-in world with so many stories to share. i also really liked her notes at the end of each story, in which she analyzes her characters and reasons for writing these stories.

my one complaint is that there were only 4 short stories when i was expecting at least 15, but i'll take what i can get.

Look, I am biased. Easiest 5 stars I gave (and my only one for the year so far). I love the Kauls and they have been living in my head rent free since Jade City. It’s always a delight to go back to Janloon, this time, to go back in time and get a glimpse of the lives of the Kaul siblings, including Anden, as well as Aun Uremayada and Ayt Mada pre-Jade City. I love how these short stories just added more weight to the characters and our understanding of them in the series. A particular favorite is Not Only Blood, the Lan-centric short story, not just because I love Lan, but also because it’s the most family-centric story which has always been my favorite part of the trilogy. I’ve already read this particular story several times from Fonda’s Patreon, but every time, it still gives me all the feels.

“(…)They were so real and relatable to me that at times during the writing I felt as much a family biographer as a novelist.” The best thing, in my opinion, about this short book is not even the stories, but the introduction and author’s notes at the end of each story. I always love getting a glimpse of the thought processes of authors when they write their stories.

This part of the Introduction, in particular, just struck a chord within me: “The term epic fantasy conjures an expectation of vast continents, kingdoms and armies, the rise and fall of nations. But there is also an epic scale to be found in a single life. In the seasons of a marriage. In seeing one’s children grow into adulthood. In passing hopes and dreams, as well as burdens and sorrows from one generation to another.” I’ve always raved about the geopolitics and economics as one of my favorite parts of GBS, but it’s precisely this epic family saga that made this series special to me. The Kauls felt like real characters to me, and spending almost three decades with them in three books felt like I grew with them too, that I was part of their family. This is why I kept joking that I also felt like I aged 20 years after reading Jade Legacy.

I know this short story collection is Fonda’s farewell to the characters, but I don’t think I’ll ever be ready to say goodbye to them. Ms. Fonda Lee, if you feel like adding 10 more short stories about the 3rd gen kids and other side characters like Woon Papi (my love) and Lott Jin, I will be here waiting.

Verdict: highest recommendations (but only if you’ve finished the trilogy)

Thanks to Netgalley and Subterranean Press for the arc in exchange for an honest review.

Jade Shards
5⭐+❤️

Jade Shards is a short book of short stories from Fonda Lee's The Green Bone Saga where she goes back a few years before the first Jade City book to tell stories about some of the main characters we follow in the main trilogy like Lan, Hilo, Shae, and also rival of the No Peak Clan and chief of the mountain clan Ayt Madashi and I really enjoyed seeing the origin of these characters with things that are mentioned in the main trilogy and I thought it added a lot more layers to these characters that I learned to like so much especially Ayt Madashi's character showing another side of her here that I didn't expect and a connection with another character that I thought was sensational and for those who like the trilogy and also the short story The Jade Setter of Janloon will definitely like these short stories too it was really good to see other stories from this universe and I recommend it to those who read The Green Bone Saga and loved a great book with great short stories.

I started and finished this on a plane, it was short and enjoyable, but not thaaaaat interesting compared to the main series, or even the other novella.

I liked Better Than Jade the most, and that's kind of what I was hoping I'd see here so I'm glad we at least got that. The other three were just okay to me.

Jade War ★★★★ 1/2
Jade Legacy ★★★★ 1/2

It was very good to go back into this world as I can't get enough of those characters. The book is a collection of 4 short stories that were originally published for Lee's patrons. Those stories follow my favorite characters including Anden and Lan, The mountain pillar Ayt Mada, Hilo and Shae. It was different from the main story as each one focused on a certain thing, but it still got the vibes of the world that I love.

I forgot how amazing Fonda Lee is at writing. And by forgot I mean it’s just been a while. I forgot how complete the conflict feels in the Greenbone universe. As if these people are part of real sociopolitical struggles full of nuance and complexity.

We get to see all of our favorites in this short story collection. There is a chapter for Lan, Hilo, and Shae- and a surprise chapter from Anden's mom.

The thing is - these are SHORT stories. Go in blind. Don’t look up anything about them. It’s really just best being surprised being dropped into this beautiful world visiting these amazing characters for a brief moment in their lives. Another beautiful collection full of moments both dark and bright from our favorite crime family.

Reading this prequel of short collections has been a bittersweet experience, since although I liked returning to Janloon and enjoying new scenes of the Kauls and Ayt Mada, this is the last book set in the series. These are the synopsis and my impressions of each of the four short stories:

- The Witch and Her Friend: ★★★
A teenage Ayt Mada meets Aun Ure, also known as “The Witch”, a young girl her age who was a great asset to the Mountain clan during the war. During three different scenes, we see these two women meeting each other at different points in their lives, which has personally helped me understand better the interest that Ayt Mada shows in Anden throughout the trilogy.

- Not Only Blood: ★★★
Probably my favorite story along with Better Than Jade. After the suicide of one of his former friends, Kaul Lan begins to worry about his nephew, who is none other than Anden. This story shows the beginnings of the bond between Lan and Anden and I loved how Lan ends up insisting to his grandfather about the need to adopt him when Anden’s mother ends up passing away.

- Better Than Jade: ★★★
This third story is about Hilo and Wen’s courtship. I liked seeing their relationship in its early stages, before what they went through in the trilogy. Reading this story was like a breath of fresh air.

- Granddaughter Cormorant: ★★
This one focuses on a naive Shae becoming a secret informer before going to Espenia. I was a little disappointed by this one, especially because Shae is one of my favorite characters in this series. That said, it was interesting reading how she became the Cormorant.

Overall, I enjoyed this collection of short stories. I especially liked that each one includes a note at the end by the author explaining why she decided to write them. A recommended book for fans of the series.

0.5. The Jade Setter of Janloon ★★★
1. Jade City ★★★★
2. Jade War ★★★★
3. Jade Legacy ★★★★★

A sweet yet short insight into the past of some of my favourite characters in fantasy.

There are four stories in here, and the first thing I have to say is that I wanted more and longer ones. Especially longer ones. I wished with the Anden one that we could have seen him actually meeting Hilo and Shae. Or seen Shae's final fallout with her family. This way, I was a tiny bit disappointed.
But I'm also biased and will take any crumps given about these people.

1. My favourite story, probably because it was so unexpected, was the story about Ayt and Ume. I really liked their dynamic and finally meeting Anden's mum and seeing the reasons behind her actions. Also, baby Anden is the cutest.
2. Obviously, I also have a soft spot for the Lan/Anden one, as those too are my favourite characters of the series and seeing them first meet and Lan's decision to take care of Anden was very precious.
3. Hilo and Wen will always be iconic, especially Wen's way of choosing him and then making sure she'll get him. Such a great couple.
4. Shae's story, in my op, focused on the wrong scenes. I didn't really need that plot. But all the insights into her inner life at that time and why she went down the path she did were still very interesting and enjoyable.

Overall, I wanted more, but I'm also happy about every tiny bit we got at all.

I loved returning to Janloon one last time and seeing all my favorite characters again. All the stories take place before Jade City, but as Lee says, should not be read until you have at least read the first book. I personally think you should hold off until you finish the trilogy. Jade Shards has more emotional impact this way.

The first story is about the strange friendship between Ayt Mada and Anden's mother. The second chronicles Lan taking Anden into the Kaul family. The third is about the early days of Hilo and Wen's courtship. The last story follows Shae before she moved to Espenia.

All of them were equally magnificent.

This was another great addition to the Green Bone Saga, with all of the short stories showcasing events from before the trilogy. I did end up liking a few of them more that others, especially the ones revolving around Shae, and Ure, because we get a peek at some of the characters that are not shown for most of the series, but there shadows loom over the entire series.

4.5 stars rounded up.

I love this world so much. It’s so bittersweet that this is the very last work within this world that we’ll be getting but it was great to revisit some of my all time favorite characters and get some more back story on them. Again, I have to commend Lee’s ability to pack so much in to so few words.

I think my favorite of the bunch was Better Than Jade. Not that I forgot about Wen but she is such a strong yet quiet presence in the whole Green Bone story that she’s not necessarily the first one that comes to mind when I think of the series but taking some dedicated time to her POV before her and Hilo were solidly an item was really fun to see. Even back then she was very level headed and smart and amazing and I love her.

I think it goes without saying but for everyone who loved Green Bone as much as I did (which is basically all of us) the two novellas are definitely must reads.

I *squealed* with joy receiving an ARC of Jade Shards by Fonda Lee. The Green Bone Saga is one of my favorites fantasy series to date, and I really enjoy Fonda Lee's writing. I knew being back in this world for these short stories would be bittersweet and it was.
Thank you to Netgalley and Subterranean Press for a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

**5 stars**

These were all character driven short stories in my opinion. I believe the last was the most plot heavy, but even then we got a great glimpse into the character that was being highlighted. I was delighted to learn more about each character, as they all left an impact on me after finishing the Green Bone Saga. The character evolutions from Jade Shards into the trilogy itself are amazing, and here I really got an insightful glimpse into the pre-beginnings of Jade City. Honestly, I wish we had a whole second book of shorts stories from this world, to look into how even more stories, relationships and events fell into place. We didn't have much more world building in this book, but as we explored the world during the trilogy, it was not necessary.

As always, Fonda Lee's writing is one of my favorites; it's captivating, heart wrenching and flows so well within the story and world. For me, she captures the atmosphere and central essence of the emotions in all her characters and stories. I feel like I am right there with them, feeling very involved and invested, feeling WITH them.

I think my favorite short story involved Hilo and Wen, and seeing a softer, more nervous side of Hilo when he was younger was really sweet and human.

I enjoyed this collection of prequel short stories from the Green Bone Saga world immensely, and am overjoyed I was given an advanced copy to read and review. For any lovers of the Green Bone Saga, this collection is a must!

i only wish there had been more stories or that they'd been longer :') the first two stories were definitely more compelling to me than the others, but all in all, it was nice to take a glimpse at these characters' pasts.
