For fans of Diana Gabaldon and Susanna Kearsley comes a riveting new tale of time travel and romantic suspense: A haunted painter's past life visions are not the creative inspiration they seemed. They're a harbinger of her ancient revenge vow, and her FBI husband won't find the serial killer until she fulfills it. But it may already be too late.

1559, ULSTER, IRELAND. When a young noblewoman Neave McConway weds the newly elected King of Tyrone, Aedan O'Neal, the couple’s rare union of love and passion becomes the talk of the region. But Aedan’s bold rule and fierce defiance of the English crown threaten his powerful enemies, and they’ll stop at nothing to crush his growing influence. After Aedan rides off to fight against the English occupiers, Neave suffers a shocking attack that will forever alter both their lives — as well as the lives they have not yet lived.

2009, WASHINGTON, D.C. While mural artist Siena Forte battles a creative block, her FBI husband Ryan Casey struggles with a serial killer case. When research leads Siena to the practice of Past Life Regression, she stumbles upon irresistible inspiration. But after her art exposes her to a vicious ancient adversary, she discovers the true reason for her past life visions. They're a harbinger of her centuries-old revenge vow, and the serial killer can't be stopped until she fulfills it. But there is another person from the past with unfinished business—her husband.

Will Siena and Ryan settle their long-overdue score, or will the past repeat itself in a chilling parallel?

The author does an impressive job with this one. It goes together two stories written simultaneously and how it’s done is fascinating. Plus the plot kept it moving along quickly, no dull spots, I genuinely wanted to keep listening.

🌀Synopsis
Siena is having dreams. Her husband, Ryan, is okay with it all until she calls out another man’s name during intercourse. The gates open wide and Siena is forced to make him see what she sees.
What she sees is a life from long ago. A life that her and Ryan both lived but as different people. Back then Neave married Aedan and they were infatuated with each other. Their future is tainted when Neave is assaulted while Aedan is away and he vows to avenge her.
Now, all these years later they find themselves again seeking to avenge her. This time, someone has been raping women and has put Siena into a coma. Will Ryan be able to save Siena just like Aedan saved Neave all those years ago, or will he finally be too late this time?

This was a DNF for me. I was contacted by the author to read and write a review because of my love for Outlander. But this was so not my cup of tea! I'm going to try and be as tactful as I can.
~~~
So the concept is that this girl is living in 2010 Washington but through deep breathing and counting backwards from 10, she's somehow transported to her previous life in the 1500's Ulster, Ireland. So that already was very unrealistic for me, even though it's about time-travel and thus completely fiction. But I don't know, at least in Outlander you have the standing stones, which involve a lot of myths already so it's plausible, if that makes sense.
On to the characters! You have her hubby Ryan, who's a FBI agent supposedly chasing some ghost serial killer. But the dude has no characteristics that you usually have with agents, this dude had so much spare time and he's always horny. Never mind dealing with rape and horrible murders all day, no that does not affect his mindset whatsoever. Also, the dude from the 1500s is supposed to be all dark and broody but goes on to explain his whole life story in their first "date"?! It was just another thing that was so not plausible.
The writing wasn't all that great either, imo. Way too much purple prose, there were whole paragraphs that you can easily erase and it wouldn't affect the story one bit. It took me back to my school days where you had to write and essay containing an x number of words, so you suddenly become a poet.
At 50 pages in I already wanted to give up but I decided to push through a little longer. And then I reached another very explicit sex scene and as someone with a very vivid imagination, the sentence "The tampon going the way of my clothes." was literally the final drop for me, it made me retch. Also, the previous day she made it clear she didn't want sex on her period, but the very next day Mr FBI literally pops the cork and does his thing?! Yeah, no. This book should get a lot of trigger warning. And me saying that, means a lot!
I'm thankful for the opportunity to read it though. And please note that this is my personal opinion and it should not influence your decision in any way.
Always and Forever by Vera Bell
(A trilogy of: bk 1- Through the Veneer of Time, Bk2- Into the Lure of Time, Bk3- Beneath the Shadow of Time)
This story set in Ireland in 1559 where  a young Neave McConway marries the new King of Tyrone, Aedan. The story becomes one of terror as Neave’s new husband leaves to fight his enemies and his young wife becomes the victim of a brutal attack that changes both of their lives.  Jump to the year 2009  in Washington, D.C.  artist Siena Fort tries to deal with a severe case of artist’s block, and her husband Ryan, an FBI agent is trying to stop a serial killer in one of the most difficult cases of his career.
Their lives collide when Siena begins to research the topic of Past Life Regression, and while the research leads to new inspiration for the artist, it also changes her entire life as she learns the meaning behind her visions of a past life, opening herself up to horrors that occurred long ago. Not only is Siena now in a lot of danger but Ryan will never be able to solve his own case until past vows of revenge are dealt with. In parallel storylines, Siena and Neave must come to terms with their past, present, and future.
Characters:  Siena and Ryan are Neave and Aedan in the future. In both past and present, they are generally nicely developed and interesting.
With a few exceptions:  one too many sex scenes which did nothing for the plot ..  though maybe I've become a bit jaded about that, having read through a lot of it over time.
They keep repeating the same mistakes time and again, and their insecurity over what their husbands did got a little old... however that does provide the opportunity to right their wrongs and overcome their internal demons.  The author psychologically explores Siena and Neave's motivations and flaws making both women feel  very real to me.
There is detailed violence, rape, coma, and while intricate to parts of both storylines, it may be off-putting to some readers. I felt a realistic but also empathetic portrayal of sexual assault-related PTSD and how it can affect both platonic and romantic relationships. I was happy that there is no victim-blaming - a real pet-peeve that some authors use.
The world-building in both Ireland & Washington D.C. come to life, and they feel both otherworldly and tangible at the same time. I really enjoyed the author's historical narrative of Irish chieftain Shane O’Neill and his relations with his fellow Irishmen, as well as Queen Elizabeth and Mary, Queen of Scots. But then I will usually lean more for the history over the romance.
The plot is quite intricate-  how the author kept everything together weaving back and forth was impressive.  I found myself flipping back to re-read parts to be sure I wasn't skipping over some of the details that blended the timeline- I wasn't.  All in all an enjoyable read.
I received an arc free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Powerful imagery of characters and place during 16th C. Northern Ireland, as well as dialogue-driven excellence in lilting native dialects, drive Vera Bell’s debut dual-timeline audio-book version of her fantasy fiction novel “Through the Veneer of Time.”
Exploring the concepts of reincarnation and past life regression through hypnosis, “Veneer” compares and contrasts the lives of Neave and Aedan O’Neill in 1500s Ireland with that of modern day married couple, artist, Siena, and FBI agent, Ryan, living in Washington, D.C.
Ryan’s task force is on the hunt for a serial killer whose signature is rape and strangulation. Oddly, Siena has an unexplained fear of rape, and stresses hearing anything about her husband’s case. While working on a mural featuring medieval weapons, Siena begins lucidly dreaming about people from that early time period and calling out their names—making Ryan extremely jealous.
I totally enjoyed this novel about the possibilities that love endures throughout time, and look forward to hearing more from Bell. At the end of the audiobook of “Veneer,” Author Bell says that this is the first installment of a three book series. I can’t wait!
I think it’s safe to say that this book has become my new obsession. I loved every second of it from page one straight to the end.This is Vera’s debut novel and WHAT a novel! I completely fell in love with the world she has created and don’t get me started on Aedan and Neave. They are just perfect for each other and although their relationship isn’t without its problems, their romance spans a lifetime. True Soulmates.
It has dual timelines, from 1500’s Ireland to 2009 America, which work seamlessly together to create the overall story. It explores the idea of past lives and past life regression and how many souls are always meant to find each other.
It’s rich with Irish history and Gaelic language which made all the more amazing 🤩 it’s clear that Vera has done her research and left no stone unturned.
It was very reminiscent of Kate Mosse’s books which I am obsessed with so if you like her work then you NEED to check this out. Also if outlander is your thing, this is for you.
Cannot wait for the next instalment in this beautiful story.
I absolutely LOVED this book! Starting to think that I have a time travel niche/obsession….since I seem to love them all! 😬
Wow! This was incredible!
We start out with two completely separate timelines.
One in 1559! Yes. You read that right!!
And one in 2009….
In 1559 we have Kings and Castles and love and war…and more…in Ireland.
In 2009 we have an FBI Agent and an Artist!
Strange thing though…the artist (Sienna) is having a brain fart and can’t produce…. When she finally does, the man that appears in the portrait is from centuries ago…and looks like a royal…and somehow looks just like a guy from her dreams…. Hmmmmm….
We go back and forth between the two timelines, but, THEY ARE SO REALISTIC THAT YOU WILL GET DRAGGED IN…to BOTH of them!!
I can’t even tell you how many times this one literally brought me to tears…but it did…over and over again. And then, just as often…brought me the overwhelming feeling of love and peace too! Amazingly!
What a beautiful masterpiece this gem is!
So happy that I was recently gifted an ARC from #NetGalley and #TimeboundPublishingLLC #IndependentBookPublishersAssociation.
Apparently this was released at the end of September, but if you haven’t read it or even heard of it, please check it out! Phenomenal!
Note: THERE ARE TRIGGERS!
Rape. Severe Abuse. As well as war…
If you can get past these, this is definitely worth the read!
#ThroughTheVeneerOfTime by #VeraBell and narrated beautifully by #FrankiePorter and #AndrewDickson.
It is listed as and Irish Time Travel and Romantic Suspense Book. Of note: This is Book #1 in the series! Looking so forward to book #2!
5+ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 for me!
Through the Veneer of Time by Vera Bell is the first in a trilogy. I received this arc for free I. Exchange for an honest review
Sienna is an artist and the wife of an FBI agent Ryan. Ryan is working on a the case of a serial killer of the ghost that for some reason really bothers Sienna. After a bout of self hypnosis Sienna discovers that she was once an Irish lady married to a King. The two lives start to mirror each other as she encounters the murderer in both lives.
There was a repetitiveness in the writing that was a little annoying and I'm not a huge fan the new age past lives thing. I enjoyed the readers voice immensely and the acting. The story was addictive and I couldn't stop listening and thinking about it.
“Through the Veneer of Time” is the first installment of a new Irish Time Travel Romantic Suspense series, Always and Forever, by author Vera Bell. In my humble opinion, it is an excellent beginning to the series. This is an extremely well-written story that will appeal to those who love the romance genre as well as those who enjoy a suspenseful mystery story.
This debut novel is the story of the past and present lives of a young woman and her husband. It is a story set in Ireland in 1559 where young Neave McConway marries the new King of Tyrone, Aedan. The story of Neave and Aedan is one of deep love and devotion that becomes one of terror as Neave’s new husband leaves to fight off his enemies and his young wife becomes the victim of an attack that changes both of their lives. Now let us skip ahead to the year 2009 where, in Washington, D.C., an artist named Siena Forte is trying to fight off her own problems. While Siena tries to deal with a severe case of artist’s block her husband Ryan, an FBI agent is trying to stop a serial killer in one of the most difficult cases of his career.
These two lives collide when Siena begins to research the topic of Past Life Regression and, while the research definitely leads to new inspiration for the artist, it also changes her entire life as she learns the true meaning behind her visions of a past life, opening herself up to horrors that occurred long ago. Not only is Siena now in a lot of danger but Ryan will never be able to solve his own case until past vows of revenge are dealt with.
Vera Bell has put together a truly captivating story in “Through the Veneer of Time.” The characters, both past and present, are very well-developed and interesting to read about. I am impressed by the research, from the Irish history to the Gaelic language, that must have gone into the novel due to the combination of the past in Ireland and the present in the United States. The plot is intricate and very creative, and one that you will not want to miss. How the author kept everything together is a mystery to me, but both aspects of the novel are woven together flawlessly, making it a complete joy to read.
“Through the Veneer of Time” is a fabulous book that I would recommend to everyone. The battle between completing a very old but heartfelt vow and keeping the present a safe and happy one as depicted on these pages makes the book a must-read. It has something for everyone out there… romance, suspense, mystery, and magic offering it up to the reader in not just one place and time, but in two. I will be very anxiously awaiting book 2 in the Always and Forever series. My guess is that anyone who picks up this book will feel the same way when they are finished. 5 Stars!!
I enjoyed this book and the author's writing. It is well written, with an interesting story and compelling characters. I will note that this story does deal with rape (tastefully done), but reader be aware in case of triggers.
This is part of a trilogy, but never fear, this book ends well without a cliffhanger. The current book does have three parts, which is a little confusing, but again, it ends well and you are not left in suspense.
The story is less mystery, more compelling storyline. Who is doing the murders was never in question, but why and how they connected ate up my brain cells.
I also really appreciated how much I wanted to know more about Ireland after reading this. From the scenery, to the characters, I felt apart of the land. It is a little hard at times to get into her use of Gaelic, as there are no translations in the text, but she does give a glossary in the back if you really HAVE to know.
In terms of spice levels, this isn't fade to black, but it is also left purposely vague. We experience the mind blowing sex, without actually being involved. This was a solid PG-13 for me and I liked that. If however you are reading this for the sex, not necessarily what you are looking for. It is a romantic novel, but not a romance novel.
The author in the preface mentions some triggers and while the rape is an intense scene, I believe it is in no way glorifying the sensitive subject. She writes all of her scenes with impressions more than descriptions, which is what makes this scene powerful, but not overwhelming.
My only downside to this book would be the middle. We wallow a little too long for my liking, but the author mentions how she tried to make her characters true to life and even in their mistakes and mishaps, I believe she remains true to her goal.
Overall a solid start to a promising series. I liked her characters and her setting. It is worth the read.
3.5 *
This debut book was an interesting mix of fantasy, psychological drama, history, romance and crime solving.
It features two themes that I find fascinating - past life regression and what's known as the locked-in syndrome.
A dual timeline story with a difference, this one moves back and forth between the present in the year 2009 and the past in 16th century Ireland.
The present is in Washington DC where Siena, an artist, is struggling to find inspiration for a mural she has been commissioned to paint while her husband Ryan, an FBI agent, is desperate for a break in the serial killer case he's investigating. Siena has never understood why she's so drawn to Ireland for no reason and when she starts having very vivid dreams of a medeival warrior and his bride and their castle in 1559 Ireland, she is completely lost in them. To the point that the man, Aedan O' Neal, starts to create problems between her and Ryan.
Siena sees her own past life as Neave, the warrior's wife, who struggles with the violence of his wars and has to ultimately pay a heavy price. She thinks there is a reason for these revelations coming to her and that it's connected to someone who is in her current life. As she comes to terms with this and how it affects her present, both timelines move closer to each other in terms of what binds them.
I thought it was quite imaginative, making use of concepts we hear a lot of these days and was done well. As with books that veer into the unknown or the probable, a certain suspension of disbelief is required in certain parts but overall this was an enjoyable read.
I did think that there were one too many 'hot scenes' especially in the present timeline, which did nothing for the plot and seemed to have been added just for the sake of having them.
This was the first time travel I read that didn't actually seem like a time travel, but more of a dual time line story. This was due to the fact that the author utilized a really unique way of introducing the time travel aspect, one I've never seen used before. Namely, past life regression. It really worked well and I fell into this story completely. Both timelines were utterly fascinating, which is a plus when reading this type of story, as I never felt reluctance to go from one time period to the other. In fact, the stories overlapped seamlessly and included a serial killer, another thing I'd never seen done in a time travel before.
Overall, I was fascinated by the characters, the setting and the drama unfolding in the past and the present and as things progressed, I found I couldn't put the book down. I knew early on in the story that I was going to have to read the second book immediately and eventually the entire trilogy. This author kept the plot moving, the suspense at just the right pace and the romance between the lovers at a perfect pitch. Although if forced to pick, I enjoyed Naeve and Aedan more. Just my personal preference. Overall a thrilling and unique entry into the past life, time travel genre.
This debut novel and the start to a trilogy is delightfully unputdownable. The book follows two timelines that are interwoven and I love the way the author combines history with present day and the fantasy aspect. The characters are engaging and I truly felt like I was drawn into the story with them. The tension and pacing are spot on, the chapters are short, and it's well-written. I'm excited to read the next book and see where it goes. There are some heavy topics that could be triggering to some so check the author's note in the beginning before reading.
This book had me hooked from the beginning, an ancient Irish love story to die for, I just couldn’t get enough of it and I can’t wait for the next book.
The way it goes back and forth between 16th/17th century and present day was well written and the story just grabbed you and kept you reading and wanting more. Always drawing your attention back.
The way the character were written into both eras simultaneously was very creative, overall a great love story with some heart break and mystery all in one.
“Perhaps there are more of our past selves in all of us than we know—shadows of strange yet familiar lives, ghosts of alien yet known joys and sorrows.”
I’ve never read a time travel romance like this before! It was so well written. The transitions from the 1500’s to present day were seamless. The story flowed well and was a definite page-turner. The way it ended was a perfect lead-in to the next book in the series. I loved the Irish language and the honest humanity of the characters. Looking forward to book 2!
"Through the Veneer of Time" by Vera Bell is a delightful novel that seamlessly blends fantasy, history, and romance. The dual timelines, spanning from 16th-century Ireland to 2009 America, are expertly woven together to create a compelling narrative.
In the present, we follow Siena, an artist in Washington DC, struggling with inspiration for a mural, and her husband Ryan, an FBI agent, grappling with a serial killer case. As Siena delves into past life regression, she discovers connections to her past as Neave, a medieval Irish lady married to King Aedan. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is intricate yet cohesive, keeping readers engaged .
Many thanks to the Library thing and Vera Bell for an opportunity to listen to this audio book. I am waiting for the next installment of this series.
“Physical. Sexual. Mental.
Crimes against women take different forms, but the ultimate effect on the survivors is always the same: lasting damage.
How lasting?
Some women learn to live with it. Some do their best to cope and move on.
But for others, the only way out is through settling the score. Even if it takes more than one lifetime. Even if they don’t know it yet.
In this life, my name is Siena Forte Casey.
This is my story.”
In the front matter of her debut novel "Through the Veneer of Time", Vera Bell offers a succinct summary of the story about to unfold. Siena, an artist and muralist, seemingly lives a relatively normal life: great job, handsome husband, close friends. And yet, some factors in her equation don’t add up: her fear of sexual assault, for instance. It’s almost as if Siena misses a part of herself she doesn’t yet know exists. Something only discovered when she enters the world of dreams.
In those dreams, she takes on another persona: Neave McConway, daughter of a noble house in 16th-century Ulster, Ireland. Neave marries her love, Aedan, the King of Tyrone. For a while, they share halcyonic days…until the threat of Aedan’s enemies presses on them. Neave suffers a horrific and traumatic experience that changes her life forever.
In the present, Siena balances her past life regression experiences with her current project: a mural for an upcoming exhibit at a prominent museum. It seems like the perfect job, until she meets the curator Ken Worgen. Something about the suave man troubles Siena. But what? Does he relate to her past somehow?
And, amidst all this, a terrifying serial killer known as the Ghost stalks among them, hunted by Siena’s husband, Ryan. How does he figure into all of this?
In parallel storylines, Siena and Neave must come to terms with their past, present, and future in this riveting tale about love, loss, and vengeance that spans across time.
Vera Bell is one of those rare authors who can evoke emotional responses in her writing with seemingly little effort. Her choice of words and scenes amplifies the drama and romance readers experience as the characters experience them. This type of emotional evocation rarely occurs in a lot of novels I’ve read, but Vera Bell exemplifies this. This, in addition to her plausible characters, high-stakes plots, and character development, makes "Through the Veneer of Time" a worthwhile novel.
If I had one criticism, sometimes the violence and intimate scenes felt a little gratuitous, but were well-done for the most part.
From the bustling streets of Washington D.C. to the rolling Irish hills, "Through the Veneer of Time" is one story you won’t want to miss.
Through the Veneer of Time offers a unique twist on time travel in which author Vera Bell uses Past Life Regression as the means to connect a story from the past with one from the present. I must admit, I had never heard of Past Life Regression, so this concept really intrigued me when a friend suggested I read the book. They compared the book to the Outlander series, which hooked my interest.
The main present-day character is Siena, a young woman living in DC, who discovers Past Life Regression - a theory that people have lived a past life and can access it through hypnosis. Her previous self is Neave, a noblewoman from 1559 in Ulster, Ireland.
Shocked at first over the possibility of having lived before, Siena doesn't know quite what to think of this phenonomen. Nor do I. I am not sure that I buy into it, but this passage from Through the Veneer of Time explains what went through Siena's mind as she faced the possibility, and it resonated with me:
"I threw out all my preconceived notions and took a long, hard look at my core. Perhaps there was more of Neave in me than I'd let on, even to myself. Perhaps there are more of our past selves in all of us than we know - shadows of strange yet familiar lives, ghosts of alien yet known joys and sorrows. If we allow it, would the curtain open a crack to revedal those lives to be more ours than prescribed by science or logic."
In reading that, I had to ask myself, what if?
One thing I really liked in this book - it's a romance, which isn't at all what I typically read, and it's a thriller, which I don't ever read - was how Bell effectively incorporates a dual timeline/dual narrative. The connection between the 15th century characters and situations are well matched to the 21st century characters and their storyline, which can be hard to pull off as a writer. But Bell does it very well in what is the first of a trilogy. Settings are also beautifully described, especially those from the past, which fed the historical fiction reader in me. The sex and violence are a little much at times, but that's just me.
All in all, the story kept me engaged but scratching my head the whole time. Could Past Life Regression be real? Kudos to Bell for making readers ask the question!
Interesting, but missing something. That’s the best way to describe the book Through the Veneer of Time by Vera Bell.
To begin with, the story has such an interesting plot, I knew I had to read this book. It was unique, intriguing, and seemed like it would be full of mystery. Imagine, your life being full of small, odd intricacies that you could never quite understand, until one day you get to see into your past life and everything slowly falls into place. Lord knows that sounds like one hell of a story to me!
My main issue with this book is that there are just a few too many moments where the reader has to suspend their disbelief a little too long. Because this book is meant to take place in this world, without magic or fantasy or anything extraordinary (besides the ordinary), I was disappointed that everyone seemed to be living their life with some inkling of their past lives. While I find the topic intriguing and I believe to an extent that many people had past lives that influence their current one, most people I know don’t have the ability to sense their past lives in the way every character in this book seems to. It felt like the author wanted to ensure that everyone’s past life became an integral part of the story, when I personally feel that the main character, Siena’s, connection was enough to give us everything we needed to further the story.
I will also give a content warning. There's an overarching theme of sexual assault and violence. While most of the scenes weren't overly descriptive or graphic, there were a few times where I personally was feeling grossed out and uncomfortable by some of the prose. I would recommend that individuals read this with caution or think about if this is the right book for them if they're easily triggered by these topics.
Overall, this story was well written, with very few scenes with overly flowery language. I think there’s many redeeming qualities in this book for people who enjoy reading realistic fiction with a hint of fantasy. It’s a good introduction to a whimsical genre while still being grounded in reality.
** Thanks to @netgalley and @verabellauthor for an ALC in exchange for an honest review**
An epic romance, which transcends the boundaries of lifetimes and centuries, with an added spark of revenge and retribution; Through the Veneer of Time, is for all the lovers of romance, mystique and historical fiction.
Set in 16th Century Ireland and modern day Washington D.C; this sensuous, powerful suspense thriller, dripping with romance, is for every lover of Outlander and Diana Gabaldon.
📖📖📖📖📖
2009, Washington: Siena, an artist, harnesses her power of past life transgression to draw inspiration for her art; only to realise she used to be this Irish aristocrat Neave in her previous life, married to her soulmate, warrior King Aeden, living a life of love and fulfilment. But when Aeden rides off to fight the English forces, Neave is faced with a brutal attack from a bestial, ruthless, cruel man which consumes their future.
Siena realises, all her past-life connections have been reinstated in her present life. Does that mean her FBI husband Ryan is Aedan reborn? Does that also mean that the brute-ish attacker is back? Will this life and a few centuries of advancement in human history hold promises for a better future?
📖📖📖📖📖
With absolutely immersive, lyrical prose and a wonderful audiobook production with alternating American and Irish accents, this was a joy to listen to.
A binge-worthy, gripping story which also goes on to show how the inner-workings of patriarchy and the human condition hasn't altered in the past few centuries. Women, however, might just be armed with enough agency to have fate side with them, if only partially.
Something I could have done a bit more with is the the nuances and intricacies involving time travel, just to make it seem more plausible and a bit more FBI procedural details.
However, through the veneer of words and phrases, Vera Bell enthralls, entertains and makes one hope, for beyond the scope of a lifetime.
And that's more than a bargain, don't you think?
I gave this book high marks for the skillful and descriptive writing of history. I liked the "time travel" aspect which differed from the Outlander series-Thank You Very Much! While I am a loyal fan of Gabaldon's work and the series, I was glad to read something fresh and new.
Reincarnation! Love that. Legacies. Family. Histories and the fallout. Yes! All of that was fascinating and done well (lots of research and finesse).
I had some trouble though in the formatting of some chapters, including their titles and sub titles, in that they overlapped too much without proper scene or POV breaks in many of them. Confusing. We are in the 16th century in the head or POV of one character then without a real break suddenly in the 21 century in the head of another character and not always the ones that are having flashbacks or forwards in their lives or dreams. It just needs some clean up here or there.
Ultimately, the book was enjoyable, had satisfying resolutions, great mysterious bits that led us back and forth in time. The 'eternal' love story is nearly magical and exciting. The 'bad/evil' characters were vile and deserving of a literary/poetic horrible end.
Nice job keeping me reading and engaged.
Unique, intriguing, suspenseful, and full of romance. The plot is centered around the idea of reincarnation and being able to tap into your past lives. I’ve always been curious in the faith of rebirth in different cultures. “Through the Veneer of Time” is ultimately a story of great love and having another chance to right some wrongs in a different life.
The characters are well-developed with detailed backstories, and their conversations are natural and engaging. The connections between the characters are what makes the story so captivating. I just wished the “Irish” voices in my head had a better accent. ;) …
However, there is an overarching theme of violence (half of the story is set in times of war) and sexual assault, which might make some readers uncomfortable. I was — my heart was on fire, and I was so upset — but I think that’s the point, right? Even though the scenes were written in a way where it wasn’t overly vivid, it was descriptive enough to be impactful and can trigger some readers. We also go through the depression and PTSD with our main characters. That’s where my heart broke the most — not the actual assault but in the aftermath.
You can tell that there’s so much detail and research that went into this novel. I was aware of which time period I was in just by the writing and dialogue on the page. The language glossary was so helpful! I enjoyed reading the terms of endearment and sayings in their respective languages. It made the dialogue more believable and genuine. If you can get past the triggers, this is a worthwhile read with a transcending love story set in parallel timelines with a note of fantasy by exploring past life regression.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Through the Veneer of Time
OMG! What a read! I couldn’t shut this one off. I had to read it. It was hot, sexy, passionate and had an element I love…love that death cannot end. While I love time travel books, and this didn’t exactly meet that criteria it does come close. Author Vera Bell takes readers to Ireland in 1559. Young and beautiful Neave McConway marries King Adan of Tyrone. From the moment they met they loved each other with passion and devotion. The King is a warrior and fights to keep his lands which terrifies Neave. One of his enemies attacks their keep and brutally attacks Neave. The King loves her dearly and tries to be patient with her but isn’t sure she will ever be the same. In 2009 we meet Siena Forte. She is an artist living in Washington DC. She has been hired to do a mural but has drawn a blank as what to paint. She is married to Ryan, an FBI agent. Ryan is working on problematic case, a serial killer.
Siena is interested in Past Life Regression; her research not only leads to artistic inspiration but helps her to understand the visions and dreams she is experiencing. The experiences of her past bring danger to her present. This also affects Ryan and his case.
MORE PLEASE! Author Vera Bell has gifted readers a book that is sure to please. The history of Ireland is fascinating. It is obvious the author has done extensive research. The plot is fascinating, complex, and imaginative. This tale is tapestry with the threads of two stories expertly woven into one. I can hardly wait for book 2.
A captivating and imaginative Irish time-travel romance novel
I recently read "Through the Veneer of Time" by Vera Bell, and I was blown away by the author's captivating storytelling and vivid descriptions. This well-researched novel is a unique blend of historical fiction, romance, and contemporary thriller that kept me hooked from the very first page.
One of the things I loved most about this book is the way the author weaves together the past and present, with dual timelines set in 1559 Ulster, Ireland, and 2009 Washington D.C. The characters are richly developed, and I found myself getting lost in the world Vera Bell has created. Neave and Aedan's love story is both passionate and tragic, and the way their past lives collide with their present ones is thought-provoking and intense.
The book also features a strong female protagonist, Siena Forte, who is a mural artist and the wife of an FBI agent. Her struggle with creative block and her journey through past life regression were intriguing and insightful. The author's writing is beautiful and lyrical, and the book is full of romance, suspense, and a touch of magic.
Overall, "Through the Veneer of Time" is a highly imaginative and entertaining read that I would highly recommend to anyone who loves time-travel romance with elements of suspense, mystery, and fantasy. If you're a fan of Diana Gabaldon and Susanna Kearsley, you won't want to miss this thrilling debut by Vera Bell.
There is a serial killer on the loose in D.C, and her husband is on the case it is a gruesome one and the parallels to Sienna are eery. The killer is murdering young women and her husband refuses to talk to Sienna about the murders.
Sienna is an artist and is commissioned to do a medieval mural at The National Gallery of Art. The painting starts to resemble the dreams that she has been having. Are the dreams based on a past life, or just figments of her imagination? They are based in Ireland in medieval times and have a lot of elements of war. Soon Sienna is not able to tell whether the dreams are real or not.
Someone is out to get her, and more women die as the investigation goes on, Sienna realizes that it is her that the medieval king is after her husband. The story is told from Sienna's aspect but her husband also plays a big part. I loved the back and forth between medieval Ireland and to present.
I have always loved a time travel story, and this one is no exception. Well researched but with a warning about sexual abuse, so if this triggers you in any way please be advised. I really enjoyed this novel, as I do anything Irish, it is fun for a character to be brought back in time so this book was a great one for me.
I give it 5 stars and hope to read more by Vera Bell!
Despite reading numerous books and having limited time for writing reviews, I felt compelled to share my thoughts on this particular book. It resonated with me on various levels, even though it falls outside my usual genre preference.
Reincarnation remains one of the most perplexing mysteries of all time, regardless of your beliefs. In this captivating book, you'll be transported from present-day life to 16th-century Ireland. The author's exceptional research on the subject immerses you so deeply in the story that it feels like you've undergone a past life regression yourself.
While historical novels aren't usually my cup of tea, I found myself thoroughly enjoying learning about Ireland through the author's meticulous world-building. The plot is enthralling and will keep you spellbound for days on end. You'll find yourself thinking about the book long after you've put it down. It's a rare debut novel that's so beautifully written, it's hard to believe it's the author's first.
While the book isn't a psychological thriller, it manages to keep you on the edge of your seat with a gripping storyline that you won't be able to resist. As you turn the pages, you'll feel both anticipation and regret, not wanting the story to end. Fortunately, it's the first book in a trilogy, and I'm eagerly anticipating the release of the next two installments.
Vera Bell’s time-travelling tale weaves a delicate balance between a gripping thriller and romantic suspense story. I had seen many comparisons to Outlander prior to reading, and while it lived up to some of these expectations, Bell does an incredible job of bringing a new and exciting element to the connection between the two timelines. Much like Outlander, this story has high highs and low lows, and I would strongly recommend readers review content warnings to confirm they are comfortable with the topics at hand (highly flagged for sexual violence, rape, and suicidal ideation).
The modern-day timeline follows Siena, a painter currently working on a commission at the National Gallery of Art, and her husband, Ryan, an FBI agent currently on the hunt for a violent killer. While I found these two likeable and their relationship believable, in some aspects they were written out of character [ how did Ryan, an FBI agent, not catch on to a woman showing up at his door?]. It was clear to me that the true core of the story was between Neave and her Aiden. This couple was written with true passion, showing how marriage vows can be tested to their limits when it comes to “for better or for worse.”
Overall, I thought Vera Bell gave us an exciting mystery to solve, and I am intrigued at the thought of this being the first in a series.
I knew I would enjoy this book, seeing as it is a historical romance set in one of my favourite time periods. I loved the attention to detail and the sheer amount of dedication and research the author did to achieve this enjoyable story.
I immediately liked both main characters and believed in their emotions and motives. I especially loved the parallelism between their past selves and present selves—this was super cool. Definitely puts this book in the magical realism category, although the epic fantasy lover in me is desperate to know _how_ exactly it all works. Maybe the author will explore this in more detail at a later point.
There is a trigger warning—sexual assault & rape—however, the author deals with both topics with extreme care and delicacy, which is noteworthy.
The only slight negativity for me were the maybe one too many similarities between this book and Outlander. I don’t think this would’ve been so noticeable to me if I hadn’t literally finished my reread right before jumping into this book. That aside, this book is still a unique story in its own right, with great characters, well-researched plot line, and a satisfying ending. I also loved the glossary & reader’s guide at the end—great additions!
I look forward to reading book 2!
