Kosuke and Yuka are on a double date, but not with one another. No, it’s their alleged life partners as determined by the red string of fate. As Kosuke becomes more unravelled, he begins to fight against fate, which mostly looks really whiny to the outside spectator.

Boy, this series. I just can’t connect with this at all and you’d think something about fighting against a fate you don’t want to happen would be a lot more engaging just on the face of it, but it doesn’t do a thing for me.

This reads like a high school book except they can go drinking and that’s part of the problem. Everybody seems so stunted in their emotional maturity - Yuka not being on a date is one thing I can buy, no judge there, but doing so just because she’s waiting for the right guy seems insane.

They kind of get into it in the volume, but if you were actively looking to meet somebody while not actually trying to date anybody I cannot even fathom how that’s supposed to work. Because fiction, yes, but it really grinds my gears.

Meanwhile, Kosuke just complains a lot about not being Yuka’s destiny while lying about pretty much everything or avoiding her questions so he doesn’t dare reveal his true feelings. That’s much more interesting than even the most minuscule hint of romance between them, he noted sarcastically.

This might be my constant struggle with my mortality speaking, but this is all such a waste of time to not dare take a chance on anything. At all. Ever. Kosuke just comes off like a jerk as he not only refuses to say anything, but also actively tries to sabotage Yuna’s potential match in Kosuke’s friend.

Not that there’s anything interesting about the two friends. The female is allegedly interested in Kosuke, but they have fewer sparks than an Antarctic barbecue pit. Everybody here feels entirely too disposable and generic. If she was an absolutely amazing match for him that would have really given this some solid drama.

The one part that might have given this a shot in the arm, a potential concert-going, is entirely bypassed in favour of the whole ‘cold’ trope. It’s worse than never arriving at the fireworks factory - they drive straight past it and keep going.

Make no mistake, I am incredibly frustrated because I believe there is a good story to be had here and there are moments that have a certain charm - Yuka’s oversized shirt moment feels like it’s about a minute away from giving Kosuke a heat attack, for example, and is really cute.

But the vast, vast majority of this volume is about one person wrestling with something that isn’t a one person issue. Yeah, Kosuke likes Yuna, but not bringing her into it at all is kind of ridiculous. Because, you know, she’s also got her own feelings, maybe? Again, nobody is acting like adults here.

Sure, he’s scared, but his inertia as the only person doing anything grinds the entire plot to a halt. And they start to do something really interesting with the concept of the string, but they were doing that last time too and you cannot make a full manga out of cliffhangers.

2.5 stars - I think this is so utterly underwhelming, seriously, that I can’t imagine going back to it. It keeps rubbing me exactly the wrong way and I don’t especially like a single character, which means I should probably bail out while I can.

This volume is a step up from the first, but it's still quite repetitive and slow paced. We see everything entirely from Kosuke's pov, which consists largely of monologuing, which consists largely of stuff he said in the previous chapter (or volume one). I'm conflicted here. I agree with other reviews that A. Kosuke is trying to handle a two person issue by himself (ie: trying to figure out their relationship without any real input from Yuka), and B. Yuka's view on wanting to find the one without dating makes no sense. But. They are so cute together when the story isn't trying to force itself into the plot! I think I chuckled a few times and the ridiculous backgrounds are funny, too (still a lot of white space on the page, but it's better). Plus, the bonus story holds the promise of what this story can be. The story does make some progress. I wanted to see a little more development, but I'm curious enough to see where this is going to continue on.

kosuke rubs me the wrong way with his 'friend-zone' talk, and the idea that women and men can't just be friends is so outdated. aside from that though, the plot here picks up a bit....I like the addition of ishida and yukiho, especially because the latter is so up front with her feelings. the classic cold/taking care of sick person scene was quite cute. yuka definitely seems to be realizing some of her feelings for kosuke, who I wish would just suck it up and tell her he likes her already...him unraveling his thread at the end is such a cliffhanger!!

I’m still interested in the story, especially with the intro of their actual love mates!

Still interesting, although we’re reaching the point where I’m shouting “just confess to her!” at the manga. 😅
