Nia Courant is an interstellar lawyer at Avend University in the space-station city Wendis. Gyle Martan is a university official. Both outsiders here, they are engaged to be married. They’d rather work on their troubled relationship than be caught up in an attack on Wendis by the interstellar empire called the Faxen Union.

But they aren’t hapless civilians. Nia can wage a war of legal words. Martan was an anti-terror agent for the Faxen Union before he defected to Wendis. He’s ready, willing, and terrifyingly able to defend the city. But first he has to learn the truth about his past and face his worst himself.

Brilliant! Engaging! Fast-paced and well-plotted third book of this hard sf space opera + romance trilogy!

Crack interstellar lawyer Nia Courant met reformed hellhound (anti-terror agent) Gyle Martan in book one. They live in Wendis, this part of space’s recreation space station. Folks come from all over to Wendis to go on the many rides / hike in the wilderness areas, etc. Let off steam, as it were.

Both Nia & Martan work for Avend University, Nia in the legal office and Martan as school proctor (yes, he makes sure that the undergraduates at the University are behaving themselves. The students, of course, just want to have fun and do their best to get into trouble a lot of the time.).

I totally enjoyed the Wendisian society. This culture operates on respect and balance. Wendis hosts a Faire annually that is much the same as a Renaissance Faire. Every Wendisian citizen has a role to play during the Faire. Nia is the Queen of Europa (much like Elizabeth the First). She is the Faire ruler and Martan is her bodyguard. And, of course, the bad guys are always after them!

The space station Wendis started life as an ark. An ark is an exploration ship with plenty of samples from the dying Earth. Many, many years ago when it reached its current position, the good ship Avendis stopped and converted to the present space station city Wendis.

Martin defected from his former employer the Faxen Union (in book one) to Wendis when his moral code could take no more of the heinous acts he was being forced to perform as Faxe's hellhound. Nia lives in Wendis while estranged from her family, back in the Faxen Empire.

This third book is Martan’s backstory, whereas the first two books were mostly Nia’s backstory.

And author Alexis Glynn Latner has already started writing the next book, albeit with a new couple as the focus.

Highly recommended for series sf fans, space opera fans, and especially for romance fans!
