First published in 1873-1880, this work was rendered into English from the German in 1889 by Clara Bell and J. A. Fuller-Maitland in three volumes published by Novello; then first published by Dover Publications in 1952 in "three volumes bound as two". Includes an extensive examination of Bach's forbears, education, and musical influences; along with detailed discussion of styles, instruments, musical notations and musical genres favored by Bach. Each volume with extensive appendix. Errata at rear of volume two. --- In green cloth-covered boards with gilt-stamped spine titling. Individual 0-486-2278-0 & 0-486-2279-9.
