This is more of a reference book than one that you would sit down and read although I have spent a lot of time just browsing the contents.
This is one of the few books that I keep on a small bookshelf in our living room because we use it frequently.
I scuba dive and I use this book to show my children the things I saw on my latest dive and I have to say sitting on the couch showing the kids the wonders of the sea that I've witnessed is almost as good as being underwater and seeing some of the ocean's creatures for the first time.
We also live by the ocean and have come home from walks on the beach many times to look up what it was that we saw on our trip.
What were all those little dolphins that started playing in the waves during a surf contest we attended? We know they were Risso's dolphins thanks to this book.
The book is a general one but is very good to have at hand to learn about the sea around us. I've had various copies throughout the years and I'd say it's a must have for anyone with saltwater in their veins.

The Audubon Society Nature Guides are a staple of outdoor nature guides. This one, covering the animals of the Pacific Coast from northern California to Alaska, is a great overview as long as you don't expect much more. The layout of these books has always been kind of strange though, with the color plates of the animals separated from the actual text, requiring you to flip back and forth a lot. A little annoying.

I got this book back in field bio. Great resource for intertidal fauna. Less useful for fish, but still a great resource. I still take it with me to the tide pools 15+ years later.
