Evie Sanders is pretty good at heeding that gnawing feeling she gets when trouble rears its head—or at least she used to be. Things change when she meets Quinn Harrison one morning after class. Evie would never do anything intentionally to hurt her long-distance boyfriend or jeopardize their relationship, but she finds it increasingly difficult to resist Quinn. Just when things can’t seem to get any more complicated, Evie is involved in a fatal car accident. Yet, her death marks a new beginning—and her new existence as an immortal. It’s not long before Evie and Quinn’s paths cross again, and she finds herself trying to walk a fine line between bending the rules she must now obey and breaking them.
I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and moved to the city after graduating from Indiana University in Bloomington. I attended graduate school at The University of Chicago, where I received my Masters degree in Social Service Administration and then my Juris Doctor degree. Thereafter, I worked as an attorney at the law firm of McDermott, Will & Emery until I decided to stay home to spend more time with my husband and two children.
I was inspired to begin writing while on a flight home from Boston. My neighboring passenger mentioned he'd just been involved in a car accident, and his account reminded me of a car accident I'd been in while a freshman at IU - an accident from which I was lucky enough to walk away.
Flashing back to the night my freshman year led me to ask the question - What if? ... What if I hadn't survived the accident? What if that had been the end of my story? What if it didn't have to be? Evie Sanders was born out of that basic premise, and so was her story. Since then, I've written "Borrowed Heart" and "Peace of Mind," the first and second books in the Evie Sanders series, both of which are available.
I am currently working on completing the third book in the series, "Soul to Shepherd," which I plan publish as well.
After reading first chapters of this book I had a feeling I wouldn't like it. I thought I'd be book with insta love, stupid girl who is cheating on her boyfriend with guy she only met, and she is like: "OH My God, he's so hotttt..." and then "he's my soul mate" interrputed by hot heavy make out sessions. But guess what ? This book was nothing like that!!!!
So like I said first chapters made me sick. Then I was bored but by the point I was halfway trough I loved it!!
Love on borrowed Time
And now after I finish this, I think I love every little detail about it. The Ending make me cry. What a cliff hanger! I want sequel now!!!!!!!!!!
Quinn you are officialy on my Book Boyfriend List . And you now what, Quinny? You are in the Top Ten!!! Brava! Applause! What can I say? I'm in love with him.
Borrowed Heart by Linda Lamberson Eve, or as her friends called her, Evie, didn't know that the morning she woke up late for one of her classes, not taking the time to take notice of what she was going to wear, only throwing something on off of the floor, that her life was pre-destined. Nor would she heed the warning from the physic. When Quinn first asked Eve for her notes on class, little did he know that his life would never be the same and that his too was pre-destined. Take a journey of love, betrayal, jealousy, pain, tears, and heartache in Borrowed Heart. It is a very strong love story that defines what the word 'soul-mate' means. It also gives us glimpses into the heavens and puts questions into our minds, could this really happen after death? It's not so much about what happens after death as it is about how far love and a heart can reach. I found myself reading this book in no time because it was such a page turner and I was so filled with the emotions the people in the book were going through, I couldn't put it down because I had to know what was going to happen to them in the decisions they were making. Close to the end, I just closed my eyes and told myself that no, this can't end like this, please let this last chapter, last few pages turn out differently. It didn't exactly end the way I wanted, but the author has allowed the reader to get a peek at the next book in Evie's life and I have my fingers crossed!!! Things just have to work out the way I want it to. Borrowed heart is one of those books you NEVER want to end, you want it to go on and on. I guess the author knows this and that is why she is putting us out of our misery by making it a series. *smile* Thank you!! I highly recommend Borrowed Heart by Linda Lamberson! It totally touched my heart and tearing it out at the same time. It is a roller coaster of emotions and I LOVED IT. I give Borrowed Heart five stars ***** Reviewed by Nora Chipley Barteau Reviewers Helping Authors http://norachipleybarteau.blogspot.com/
I have a ton of good things to say about this book, but I'll start with the cover. There is something about it that I just love! After I got it in the mail, I kept picking it up to admire and fast-flip through the pages. I realize that has nothing to do with the inner workings...so I will move on :-)
The concept behind the plot of this story is fresh and unique. It's got a lot of familiar things in it, but sets itself apart in many ways. Evie is a plain-ish type girl going to college, minding her business when she meets Quinn. He makes her heart thump...but she has a boyfriend. She wants to do the right thing, but ends up dead in the process (I'm condensing here... ;-) Luckily, death is not the end for Evie.
As I said before, I really liked the idea behind this book. There were a ton of characters that I loved....and one or two I loved to hate. There's Evie's mentor, Peter. He is a figure of security for Evie, but still has a bit of mystery surrounding him. Evie is brash and thoughtless sometimes, but always for doing the things any normal person would. Her self-control is iffy at best...and I like that! On to Quinn. The first part of the book I found myself unsure of his motives and I didn't know a whole lot about him. Later on he becomes more transparent and, in turn, pretty darn sexy.
There was one part (towards the end) where I was telling my book 'Noooo!!'. I won't say why because that would spoil the fun, but I think there will be a lot more 'No-ing' in the next book.
A strong story that gains momentum as it goes along. I am very looking forward to Book 2!
In "Borrowed Heart" which I won through Goodreads/First Reads Linda Lamberson puts a new twist on a paranormal love- story taking tragic lovers torn apart by death and re-igniting their love after one returns as an immortal to protect the other from a demon attack. The story opens with a psychic reading about a curse that marks Evie Sanders for death. With uncertainty and fear nipping at her heels Evie doesn't expect to meet her true love or to face death when she's irrevocably drawn to Quinn Harrison.
Yet when she awakens after tragedy strikes she discovers a new reality. As an immortal with her memories erased Evie has been chosen to train as a Shepherd whose mission is to protect humans marked for death by a demonic faction. On her first assignment she not only crosses paths with Quinn again, but as their love burns anew they play with fire breaking the rules as demons begin hunting them both.
Cleverly Linda Lamberson creates a world in space and time where people who've died and have no body, but whose soul and spirit are merged are chosen to be Shepherds guarding humans marked by demons for death. With no memory of their past they train as skilled warriors to divert deadly attacks but not to kill. Assigned to a human the Shepherd's beating heart is borrowed from the one they're duty bound to protect as "bad things happen in threes". Their conduct is bound by "Rules" and if broken are brought before the Council who determines their fate. But like every good story destiny and rules are often broken.
The plot is fast-paced and heats up when Evie and Quinn not only begin falling in love again but are chased by demons who want him dead and her essence extinguished. Tension and suspense escalate when the Time Keeper that gives the date of each of Quinn's three impending accidents spins out of control with no logical explanation and when nothing happens after the alarm signals danger is near. The mystery deepens when Ronald a homeless man who can see Evie calling her "angel" gives her a cryptic warning that has her racing to Quinn's apartment to save him. Although slow at first when the action starts it never stops as Evie faces the consequences of breaking the rules, and Quinn fights to keep her from leaving him again.
At the foundation of a well-written and intriguing plot is a love-story filled with passion and warmth as sparks re-ignite between soul mates who will risk everything to stay together. Beginning with her temptation to betray Ryan the boyfriend she respects and cares for, Evie forgoes her commonsense, unable to forget Quinn when their electricity crackles as they kiss at a party. Bound by ties neither can understand Quinn senses her presence in his apartment even though she's invisible, while Evie will break any rules to be close to him.
The characters are well-developed, realistic and complex with all their flaws and faults. At University Evie Sanders is a smart, feisty young woman who feels guilty about her attraction to Quinn and decides to make a harrowing journey to clear her conscience only to end up dead. As an immortal she tends to be selfish and reckless at times but is also self-sacrificing, willing to do anything to keep him safe. Attractive and arrogant Thayer (Quinn) Harrison is smitten by his classmate Evie, charming her into kissing him. Although compassionate and caring after losing her, when angry Quinn can be impulsive and insensitive. It is these two personalities that fuel the story with passion, energy and drama that keeps you enthralled from the first page to the last.
I liked " Borrowed Heart" with its unique and innovative spin on a love-story and intend to read the other two books in the Evie and Quinn saga.
Eve (Evie to her friends) has a regular teenage life attending college away from home while her long term boyfriend Ryan is attending another college over an hour away. Evie has never questioned or gave her relationship with Ryan a second thought but after the run in with campus hottie Quinn, things change. They are drawn together for unknown reasons, maybe the thrill of someone new, but after that one kiss…that changed everything. Evie had to know if what she has with Ryan is still there. That day would forever change everyone’s lives. Things are set into motion and they will never be the same.
Eve is killed in an accident and wakes up to meet Peter. He informs her that she is dead, she is immortal, a Shepherd to be exact and he is her mentor. He explains that she is now to watch over and protect humans, or charges as they call them. Peter unloads tons of information on her about her new self, what she is expected to do, what she can now do being immortal and all, and most importantly some of the rules. Eve doesn’t just except what she was being told, she asked questions, threw a bit of a tantrum and then went back to questioning Peter. I love that she didn’t just say “I’m immortal…oh, well, ok then”. As a reader it’s always great to know the background information and Linda didn’t lack in this area at all, we were given so much information about what is was like to be a Shepherd, what it would entail, what Eve could and couldn’t do. Eve’s training was cut short for her first assignment which just happens to be the one and only Quinn.
The love factor in Borrowed Heart is beautiful yet heartbreaking all at the same time as it’s a case of forbidden love yet they will always seek each other out. We get to see what it was like for Quinn to lose her and now that she is back, he isn’t letting go! I often found myself smiling with things that Quinn did with his small yet big gestures. Quinn isn’t a perfect guy, we see some of his flaws but that makes it just that much more real. You want to hold him tight and never let him go and then at a point you want to slap…well…both of them really.
Evie is a very strong character, she takes her job seriously and when things get out of hand she steps up, admits her mistakes and takes responsibility for them instead of hiding behind something or someone to correct the issue for her. She knows that she should walk away, knowing that it will break her heart, she knows that it will cost Quinn his life and possibly hers if she doesn’t but he isn’t willing to let her go.
It is so easy to get wrapped up in their story, the things that have happened to Eve throughout. At some points I felt that there was too much information about what being a Shepard entailed but everything worked itself out and we really needed all that information. Linda didn’t leave any stone unturned. You will find yourself wanting Eve and Quinn to be together, even with the knowledge that you have. I feel that this is just the beginning for them that something big is going to happen in the next installment and cannot wait to get my hands on it. Would I recommend this, of course I would, have you added it to your list? If not then you should!
First time novelist Linda Lamberson delivers a fantastic new twist on the tortured love story. Borrowed Heart is the first in a planned series based on the heroine, Evie Sanders.
The story unfolds as readers learn that Evie has been fated to die young. Evie, being a typical teenager ignores the rantings of the psychic, but as time goes on and she gets closer to her predicted doomsday, her life begins to fall in line with the predictions. Before she knows it, her life has ended. But, this is just the beginning of Evie’s true purpose.
Evie wakens after the fatal crash to learn that she has been chosen as a shepherd; someone who can act as a sort of guardian angel for the living who have had their fates scrambled. Her memory wiped clean, Evie begins her journey as a shepherd, but soon it is clear to her and to the other shepherds that someone or something is interfering with Evie’s own fate. She has been sworn to protect a soul that she knows, in fact, someone who could be her soulmate. It appears that his existence is not the only one in danger.
Lamberson does a fantastic job weaving a fated love-story. She took her idea of ‘what-if’ and has created a fantastic answer. The characters are strong and believable. The conflict in Evie is palpable. I felt a bit overwhelmed with what I considered to be a lot of backstory in the beginning. However, once Evie died, the story moved along at a great pace. I look forward to reading more of Evie and Lamberson’s work.

This is a freshing breathe of air. No whining, weeping, useless main character. Thank you, Lord. You've answered my prayers. The book has everthing; strong main character, sexy male partner, action, mystery and romance. Thank you Linda Lanberson for writing this book. Will be reading the second one.
I liked this book and enjoyed the characters. There are some conceptual things that take a while to explain, so I got a little dis-engaged there. But once that was explained and the "real" story line continued,I liked it a lot. I will definitely read more Evie books!
Borrowed Heart is a rollarcoaster ride of emotions and romance. It will drawn you right from the start and leave you wanting more at the end.
Eve, or Evie as her friends call her is just a normal college student. She has a boyfriend from high school Ryan who attends a different collage. Things are going fine until she meets Quinn in one of her classes. He is gorgeous and very persistent. After a kiss between Evie and Quinn one night at party Evie decides she needs to tell Ryan in person what happened and her feelings for Quinn. That is the night that will change her life forever.
Evie is tragically killed in a car accident. When she awakens she is greeted by Peter. He tells her that she is dead and is a Shepard, someone who watches over and protects human or as they call them, charges. Evie cannot believe that she is dead and wants answers. Peter starts to explain what a Shepard is and all the rules that go along with it. All of Evie's memories of her life are gone. She is not allowed to find anything out. While on assignment protecting a charge you are not allowed to reveal yourself to them either. There are too many other rules to list. Evie has only just started her training when she finds out that she is being assigned to a charge immediately.
When she arrives back on Earth to start her assignment her charge who just happens to be Quinn, can "feel" or sense her. He knows that Evie has somehow returned. This is where the story started getting really interesting to me. Evie starts breaking the rules starting with revealing herself to Quinn. She can go from invisible to materializing into a human like being with all her cool powers. As they start to rekindle their forbidden romance they have no idea what danger is in store for them. Evie doesn't realize that she is not only putting Quinn in more danger but herself also. The Servants, evil other worldly beings will do anything to keep them apart.
I loved the chemistry between Quinn and Evie. Their relationship is so emotional with all the ups and downs. Quinn wants to be a normal couple but Evie knows that she has to stick to her assignment to protect Quinn while trying to follow the rules. She struggles big time with this and it makes for a really great story. The ending was bitter sweet for me and a bit of a cliffhanger. I am looking forward to the sequel and the rest of this series. This book was provided to me for review. This did not affect my review in any way.
This book packed a powerful punch from beginning to end. And, just to get this tidbit out of the way, "Borrowed Heart" is just the 1st book in a 3 book set. Yes, does end in a cliffhanger. Ordinarily, I would pass on finishing the trio but "Borrowed Heart" sucked me in from the Prologue to its soul-wrenching (pun intended) conclusion. It begins as many young romances do. College boy meets college girl. Mutual attraction. Pursuit. Conflict. Then...she dies. Not the way to begin a romance. You might think this is the end to the story. You would be so, so wrong. This is where things really start to heat up. You see, it turns out Evie and Quinn are destined to be together - death not withstanding. We have immortal beings at odds with each other - a kind of supernatural war between the forces for good and evil. Shepherds (guardian angels, if you will) and Servants (the bad guys) are in a tug-of-war for the fate of certain humans with Evie and Quinn stuck in the middle. We watch Evie navigate her new existence as a Shepherd and try to follow the rules set forth which becomes increasingly more difficult as time passes and emotions come into play, all the while trying to protect her charge from the Servants and the harm they mean to inflict. There is so much going on and so many things about this story I loved and I would like to reiterate but that would spoil the surprise. Suffice it to say, my interest is piqued and I will be continuing on with this trilogy to its, hopefully, romantic end.
I received this book for free on Goodreads First Reads Giveaways. It was signed by the author. I really liked the premise and enjoyed the story. I would categorize this as YA Romance.
Evie is a great character. I think she has a lot of room to grow as the series progresses. She took chances and stood by her choices.
I liked Quinn at first, but found him a little too manipulative and selfish at several points and this lessened my sympathy for him. I hope he grows too as the series progresses.
I would love to know more about the Shepherds and those above them. Really great "what if" question to answer about after-life possibilities.
A positive comment aside from the story: for an indie, I was pleasantly surprised at how nice this book looked. The cover art is really great and the typography is attractive and smart. I like how the cover title typography is mirrored on the chapter headings. And I love that the text was full justified. YES! So many of the small press/indie books left align the text and it looks terrible.
NOTE: the cover of my book looks like the cover for the ebook--blue/purple with white typography, not like the image that's attributed to the physical book. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that version, I just don't know what it looks like in person.
I look forward to reading more from Linda Lamberson.
Won from goodreads Evie sanders has been told off a fortune teller she have 2 near death experiences and then sorry she won't survive the next. Evie does not believe her and tries to put it to the back of her mind but lately years later she dreams of this. Things start to change for Evie in a long term long distance relationship she meets Quinn and is totally attracted to him and can't stop herself so she decides to go and see her boyfriend Ryan but it is a long trip to drive and things happen she didn't expect when she gets there. It's part a love story with a bit of a difference I really enjoyed it .
This is a fabulous book! It's a fresh twist on a love story. If you liked the Twilight series, you'll definitely love this. Evie is a magnetic protagonist and her love/lust/infatuation Quinn is intriguing as well. There are many colorful characters in the book, and having just read an advanced copy of the 2nd book in the series, there are many more interesting characters to come!! Read this book now, so you'll be ready for #2!! It's even harder to put down than #1!!
The beginning was utterly stupid, then painfully boring and boring... Next we get some action and fun (though a little predictable) then, of course, drama and heartbreak and the end... I HATE so many things about this book, but I can't tell much more without spoilers. Anyway what you need to know is that the ending is terrible and senseless. I thought that this book might be book but, in my opinion, it really wasn't.
I was so happy when I won this book in a giveway by goodreads it is a amazing book a total page Turner I did not want to put it down. One of my new favorite books I can not wait to read the rest of the series. If your looking for a good book this if it .as soon as I read the first few pages it had my attention.
I won this book through First Reads and I 'm really thankful that I did because it was an good read. The plot and forbidden romance had me staying up late at night reading so I could find out what happens next, while each character is memorable and has their own distinct personality. Overall, this was a good book and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.
I really did not expect that I will loved this book! At first thought it was too normal/predictable in his genre!! I got bored when Evie died and became a shepard!! however as story progresses, it really kept me interesting. And so many scenes of Evie and Quinn that make me loved this book!! I can't wait for its next book!!
Despite getting this book is almost impossible in Australia, it was so worth it to borrow someone's ipad to be able to read it. Linda your Australian readers are really missing out as they can't even get access to hardcopies of this book.
For the readers, I recommend you hunt down a copy of both books at the same time, because you'll want to keep reading after the first.
I could not put this down! I got so into this book, completely engrossed in it to the very last page, which is a cliff hanger of mass proportions! Would love to read the next book. I can't wait to see what happens between Evie and Quinn!
I won this in a blog giveaway over 6 years ago. Lets just say I wasn't missing anything at all by taking so long to pick it up. This was utterly boring, and didn't draw me in in any way. I DNF'd it within the first 11 pages.
