Last month, intelligence analyst Lexie Martin found out a secret that could ruin lives. After a week on the run from her own government with her maybe-almost girlfriend, Sophia Flores, Lexie was forced to turn herself in and accept her punishment. But that punishment never came…
Aside from Lexie’s confusion about the whys of her release, things seem to be okay—she’s free, back at work, and is officially dating Sophia, which is way better than just okay. But when you embarrass the most powerful man in the country, you risk incurring his petty wrath, and when Lexie is reassigned back into a field position in a hostile country, she’s sure it’s retaliation for knowing the truth and that the president is going to leverage what Lexie did to keep her in line.
Now Lexie has a new mission. Make it home to the woman she loves.
E. J. Noyes is an Australian transplanted to New Zealand, which may be the awesomest thing to happen to her. She lives in the South Island with her wife and the world’s best and neediest cat, and is enjoying the change of temperature from her hot, humid homeland.
An avid but mediocre gamer, E. J. lives for skiing (which she is also mediocre at), enjoys arguing with her hair, pretending to be good at things, and working the fact she’s a best-selling and award-winning author into casual conversation.

Okay read! The storyline dragged on and on -- at times certain parts started being repetitive as the story progressed then i think E.J. realized that she was close to loosing her readers, she slowly picked up the plotline which did eventually improve a little closer to the ending.... And that somewhat on again - off again relationship/non-relationship...
Book two in the Halcyon Division Series begins where book one, Integrity, left off. This series must be read in its logical order to gain a better understanding
Lexie Martin has been given a get out of jail free card and doesn’t understand why. By all accounts Lexie did break the law in order to expose the involvement of the Vice President with the Russians. Yet she is returning to work in just a couple of weeks. Lexie’s down time is being spent reconnecting with Sophia.
I believe this is the middle book of a three book series because it definitely reads like one. The pace slows down considerably which leaves the door open to some repetitive navel gazing by Lexie. Yet Noyes is such a talented writer that she makes the navel staring full of tension and pressure. There are a number of plot twitches which is setting the ground work for the final book.
Jeffrey is a secretive and interesting character throughout the Middle East section of the book. He is a calming foil to the coming apart Lexie.
The ending saves this book for me and makes it a four star read. It is totally unexpected and I loved being blindsided by it. Now I cannot wait until book three.
I received an advance review copy from Bella Books through NetGalley. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
4.5⭐️ It’s always a big pleasure to read a book by EJ Noyes. There is never a question of whether or not I should read a book by her, it is always a must-read.
I loved the first Halycon book, but #2 is even better in my opinion. I could understand Lexie's frustration with the whole situation with the Kunduz files, the President, and another field operation in a very dangerous country, especially when it feels like a punishment. As the relationship with Sophia is only in the early stages of normal life, having begun under unusual circumstances, the separation is an additional burden.
Lexie's companion abroad is a cast that surprised me. The situation Lexie finds herself in becomes increasingly complicated, suspicious, and messy. The plot is once again very intriguing. Especially the part playing in the Middle East is thrilling. And as always with Noyes' stories, the main characters sneak into your heart and stay there.
I'm really excited to see what happens next and I hope we don't have to wait too long.
This second part of the Halcyon Division series leaves the story on a huge cliffhanger, so first and foremost, I would like to ask for the third episode as soon as possible, please, thank you.
Regarding the story that began in chapter one with the road trip in which Lexie was trying to solve some issues while she and Sophia were getting to know each other better. In this second part things get complicated since they are going to have to separate due to the new mission that is entrusted to Lexie and that she is going to transfer abroad. So in this part there is much less interaction between Lexie and Sophia, with the latter remaining a bit in the background. And new important characters appear in the plot, some sinister and others surprising. But always adding meaning to the story
The plot becomes more complicated compared to what it did in the first book and from what is sensed at the end, the continuation will not be less, there are several key aspects that remain in suspense. So please, when can we have the third one?
Publisher Bella Books was kind enough to provide me with an advanced reading copy via Netgalley for an honest review
This second book in the Halcyon series starts out slowly and at times felt repetitive. I was wondering if I just wasn’t fond of espionage novels and back room politics and thought about not continuing with this audiobook. I’m glad I persevered and ended up rewarded with a great read and a need to see what will happen to Lexie and Sophia next.
It was nice to get a summary of events in the first book, events which impact Lexie and her girlfriend and set the tone for this read. Assigned to a dangerous country abroad as payback for intelligence which embarrassed the president, Lexie must face old memories,a long distance relationship and the risks that come with intelligence gathering in a foreign land.
Abby Craden was her usual excellent self and enhanced this read.
E.J. Noyes’ novels are always in demand at our house, and with good reason. She is right up there in my list of favorite authors. I’ve read all of her books so far, over and over. Then I’ve gotten the audiobook versions and listened to them, many times. Noyes is Just. That. Good.
I’ve recently finished reading Leverage, the second book in ‘The Halcyon Division Series’. The first novel in this series is Integrity, and you need to read both books in order to understand what is going on in this second story. Leverage, just like the first novel, is filled with heart-stopping action and adventure. You will find intrigue, thrills, betrayal, love, and loss as Lexie Martin is forced to leave her girlfriend Sophia Flores and spend six months working undercover in a country she hoped never to see again.
The characters play a major part in making this a wonderful narrative. Ms. Noyes has created a cast of unforgettable people, from the crooked politicians, the secretive intelligence agents, to Lexie and Sophia. These two women make a wonderful couple. I really fell in love with Lexie, and I know you will too.
Leverage has my highest recommendation. Just remember to keep a box of tissues close by for the really emotional parts.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bella Books for allowing me to read and honestly review this book.
I feel like this is a step up from book 1 (Integrity) in this series. Integrity is a must-read before starting Leverage.
Leverage basically picks up Lexie’s story where Integrity left off. We experience more of her and Sophia’s relationship and even more political intrigue. I feel like I shouldn’t say anything about this story because it will definitely ruin either book in this series. I think Noyes has found her groove and Lexie’s voice in this book, more so than in book 1. Here it also works better to be just in her POV.
This is book #2 in the Halcyon series and picks right up where book one left off. Lexie and Sophia’s relationship has grown and they have become inseparable. But…..the US Government/the President has other plans. Lexie is forced into an overseas mission and is under constant stress worrying about Sophia and her family.
Jeffery is sent with her on her mission and he is a complex character with many twists and turns In their relationship.
I liked this better than book one. I especially liked the scenes in the Middle East and the surprise ending. There is some good sizzle scenes too! We are definitely left with a huge cliffhanger. I can’t wait to read book 3.
Thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review this book
When I tell you I spent my entire day at work thinking about this book and how I couldn’t wait to get home to finish it, I’m 100% serious. And then once I did, the final quote summed it up perfectly for both me and Lexie. The cliffhangers on cliffhangers. E.J. Noyes’s creativity never ceases to amaze me. Can’t say much without giving a lot away so I’ll leave it at if you haven’t read Integrity, go now, and then on 11/16 pick this up. No idea how I’m going to wait until May for Loyalty, but wish me luck.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
Leverage left me pondering long after I turned the last page. Known for her enthralling contemporary romance, E.J. Noyes ventures into new territory with this series, and while I appreciate the fresh direction, book 1 and 2 haven't quite hit the mark for me.
In this instalment, Lexie navigates her challenging role as an analyst amidst bureaucratic nightmares, all while striving to nurture her relationship with Sophia. Despite her professed competence and dedication, Lexie's professional struggles felt under-explored, leaving me craving more insight into her actual work. One main aspect that I struggle with is the portrayal of governmental operations and intelligence work - it lacks authenticity and reduces the impact of the narrative's attempts at tension and intrigue. Despite being hailed as a top analyst, Lexie's actions often reflect incompetence, undermining her credibility and the story's stakes. As a realist at heart, it's hard for me to see past this.
The narrative often circles back to Lexie's longing for Sophia, and their seemingly endless virtual communications that, while poignant, start to feel repetitive. The narrative's reliance on repetitive scenes and dialogues, possibly a result of Noyes's "pantser" approach to writing, exacerbates its pacing and depth issues. Scenes that could have propelled the plot or deepened character development instead languish in a cycle of eat-drink-repeat, a mundane loop that detracts from the potential richness of the story's world.
However, the introduction of Jeffrey, Lexie's new partner, injected an unexpected layer of complexity into the story. His dynamic with Lexie added a fresh dimension, offering some of the character depth and intrigue I found lacking elsewhere. The action picks up towards the end, but without the impactful twists I had hoped for.
Noyes' skilful writing shines through in her vivid settings and emotional depth, yet I'm left desiring a deeper dive into Sophia's character, who remains unknown. This series, while a departure from Noyes' usual fare, showcases her versatility, even if it leaves readers like me yearning for a bit more cohesion and clarity.
My fingers are crossed that book three will pack a punch to conclude the series.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bella Books for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.
How did EJ Noyes get away with not naming a country but I had a perfectly good visual in my head so perfectly of the surroundings and people? That was an amazing trick!
It goes without saying you have to have read the first book to get the hang of Leverage. Especially the nuance in the main character’s relationship. Funnily enough, I felt like Mr Smith vied for the other half of the main character role. The organic blossoming of their relationship was very intimate and sweet.
For me, EJ Noyes made their statement in Ask, Tell. Although that storyline will forever be a favourite by Noyes, Halcyon division is a great 2nd place in my heart.
Oh, EJ Noyes... I can't for the life of me figure out how she considers herself a pantser yet still manages to weave her way through this maze of intrigue.
Her not-spy MC Lexie Martin hopes to return to a more normal existence after being on the run in book one, Integrity. She envisions going into the office each day to resume her data analyst job and in her personal time finally giving her new relationship with Sophia Flores (a SAINT) the attention it deserves. But this being the second in a three book series, that would be too easy.
I won't go into details here, because some folks haven't read Integrity yet and you just need to take this ride, but I will say that these books are must-reads. And if you can listen to them, I one thousand percent suggest going that route. Abby Craden was born to narrate EJ's books. She so perfectly performs the various characters that you forget it's only one narrator doing all the voices. I can't tell you how many books I've listened to that Craden has narrated. A hundred? HundredS?? Probably. And STILL I was blown away by how terrific she was on this one!
What a great way to end the book and can't wait to see how Noyes wraps the whole story in Loyalty. Come on, May 2024!
This was a fun one. I think I was slightly less invested than I was in book one, and I had been hoping to get into Sophia’s pov, but alas, we do not. And now after this one, I want to get into her head more than ever. EJ Noyes didn’t initially click for me, and there have been some of hers that are fine, not favs, but the ones that are favs are FAVS and I rlly love how creative she is—she changes up the plot and settings around her romances so much. It’s a real great time. I def am very invested in this series, and can’t wait for book 3. Abby Craden was a stellar narrator as always.
Eduarda Juanita Noyes!!! WTAF? Do not leave me on edge like this. How long do I have to wait until the 3rd book comes out?
I thought the first book in this series was just meh, but it was clearly just a ramp up for the real ongoing story that came about in the second book. Now I spend the next few days obsessing, dwelling and overthinking this book and what’s next.
I’ve been waiting for this ever since I finished Integrity and it did not disappoint. Ok, the romance kind of takes a back seat and then some but I like that the TBC is such a cliffhanger. This is edge of the seat stuff, so so good. It is such an exciting read , I absolutely loved it! This is a must read and can’t wait for the grand finale. Free ARC via NetGalley
If like me you’ve been impatiently awaiting Leverage by E. J Noyes then the wait is over, it’s here and it is truly fabulous. I adore a Noyes novel and have read them all. Every time this author teases us with a post about an upcoming release, I start a countdown. However, this time the anticipation was stronger than usual because after Integrity (Book One in The Halcyon Division series) I needed to know how Lexie and Sophia were doing. Leverage starts where Integrity ended but this book can easily be read as a standalone because the author gives readers a detailed recap of the events that unfolded in the previous book. In my opinion, this is Noyes’ best work. It’s incredibly clever. It has treads of intrigue, danger, puzzles, and romance that flow flawlessly together. The emotions I went through during this read went from elation to ugly crying and everything in between. The writing is magnificent, and Noyes manages to add wit, humour, and amusing anecdotes that lighten what could have been a heavy book. No other author I've read lets me get in a character's head quite like Noyes. Her ability to put me in the time, place, and emotional mindset of Lexie amazed me. Speaking of Lexie. I’m in love with her, she is so perfectly imperfect, and she has stolen my heart. She is a complex woman with flaws and for me, this makes her real and relatable. She’s brave, self-aware, sarcastic, sassy and thoughtful. She feels deeply but has the ability to see the bigger picture and do what needs to be done. Plus, according to Sophia, she looks incredibly hot in skirt suits. A badass in a skirt suit, yes, please! A Brilliant book by a brilliant author. This is one not to be missed. It's five stars plus all of the stars from me. One of the best books I've read this year.
What a great story! Leverage (book 2 in the series) had me hooked from start to finish. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Abby Craden, and she did an incredible job bringing the characters and tension to life. Her narration really added depth to Lexie and Sophia’s journey, and the suspense was palpable throughout.
E.J. Noyes knows how to keep readers on edge, and this book is no exception. I loved the intensity and how Lexie’s mission became not just about staying alive but about getting back to the woman she loves. The stakes are high, and the plot is so engaging - it kept me guessing until the very end.
And, wow, the cliffhanger! 😅 I’m definitely eager for the next book to see where this story goes. The suspense in this book was one of my favorite parts, and I’m excited to see how everything unfolds.
Audiobook Review: I really enjoyed the audiobook version of Leverage. Abby Craden’s narration was fantastic - she captured the emotional weight and suspense perfectly. Her voice brought out the intensity of Lexie’s situation, and I loved how she handled the different characters. Listening to the story only made me love it more. Highly recommend it if you enjoy suspenseful stories with great narration!
Book 2 in EJ Noyes’s Halcyon series picks up directly from where book 1 finishes, deepening and extending the story and taking the reader on an even more fun journey than book 1. Lexi and Sophia’s relationship is drawn and developed wonderfully. Until that is, Lexi receives deeply disturbing news requiring her to leave the country for an extended period of time.
We get a study of what it means to be in a relationship and the responsibilities that entails towards your partner. How difficult long-distance relationships can be for the one left behind, with all the worries and concerns that entails when your partner is away in a strange land. And we also get to see just how hard it is to leave that special someone behind for what seems like an eternity. Don’t worry, although Lexi and Sophia may be physically apart for a good part of this story, but does not mean that they don’t share plenty of page time together.
Outside of the romance plot, this Halcyon series is a joy. There are more layers and more complexities added into the story after the establishment and setup in book 1. Halcyon leverage is more than a worthy sequel, it surpasses the first book in the series and is a very solid five stars for me. I can’t wait for book 3, due for release in the spring next year… Which is far too long a break to have to wait to see what will befall Lexi and Sophia!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.
The thriller continues First off: I recommend to read part one of this series where Lexie discovers the SECRET she should never have known and meets her girlfriend Sophia. „Leverage“ is may be even better as the first book in the series (Integrity). After Lexie miraculously escapes punishment for knowing too much, Noyes lulls us at the start of Leverage into a faux security where everything seems to be normal until it‘s not. I loved how Noyes very, very skillfully lets as reader travel with Lexie into a hostile country on assignment - it is total immersion for us readers into her feelings, perceptions, the foreign setting and her relations. It reminded me a lot of her brilliant novel „Alone“. Very well done and very different from Integrity! In the middle the story slows a bit down and in my opinion there was a tad too much about the vengeful orange man - but the end is again a finale furioso with a huge cliffhanger. I hope Noyes is already typing away on the third installment!!
I received an ARC via netgalley. The review is left voluntarily.
OMG!! "You've got to be effing kidding me"!! Leverage is book 2 of The Halcyon Division series! And the cliff hanger at the end is outrageous!! What will happen to Lexie and Sophia?! I can't wait for book 3! I hope it's out soon! This series is unbelievably good!! Better than 5 stars!
First chapter brings those that skipped the first book up to speed, or for those that read the first ages and books ago, a quick refresher. The romance is what moves in the first part of the book and in the majority of the book there is little romance and plenty of blend plot. I am determined to avoid spoilers so I will only say as soon as I finished this book I looked up when the next in the series will be out. Prepare for a sort of cliffhanger but definitely a surprise with more to come. 3.5 not up to 4 because, I need to get the next book for resolution and because although I kept reading, there were some parts my reading was less urgent.
Leverage is a thrilling and captivating addition to the world of Halycon Division romance and espionage. The story follows intelligence analyst Lexie, her now girlfriend, Sophia, but her surrender to the authorities doesn't lead to the expected punishment. This is where it gets crazy.
Noyes weaves an intricate plot, filled with suspense and political intrigue. The chemistry between Lexie and Sophia is electric, adding emotion to the story. The author skillfully explores the complexities of their relationship amidst the dangerous world of intelligence operations and separation but is not the focal point of the story.
The narrative is fast-paced, with unexpected twists and turns that keep readers on the edge of their seats. Lexie's reassignment to a field position in a hostile country raises questions about the president's motivations, and as readers, we are drawn into a web of suspense and uncertainty.
One of the strengths of "Leverage" is Noyes' ability to create well-developed characters with genuine emotions. Lexie's determination to make it back to the woman she loves adds a touching and relatable dimension to the story. E.J Noyes has delivered a gripping story set against a backdrop of political intrigue and espionage. "Leverage" is a must-read for those who enjoy a thrilling narrative with strong, well-rounded characters and a love story that keeps you invested until the very end.
I honestly cannot wait for the next book because the cliffhanger at the end left me with so many emotions and questions.
EJ Noyes knows how to write, how to capture a reader and how to keep attention with a mixture of her humor and a nice dose of sexy romance. In other words, this book was very entertaining, and well-written. I loved it! Lexie Martin, an intelligence analyst, was always so busy trying to save the world that she continuously forgot to save herself. Believing she was being punished for her role in exposing and having the vice president arrested for his crimes, she felt that she, herself, was now a target, and was sent on a horrible six month mission to a dangerous location. Not only that, but just having an association with her lovely Sophia also put Sophia in danger. They were set for some rough times. Her partner and roommate in the mission was Jeff Burton. There was a lot of bantering between the two as they had to negotiate the living arrangements. The timing of the mission was also unfortunate, breaking both Lexie’s heart and Sophia’s. For their new relationship to survive, they would have many challenges with the long separation and Sophia’s not even knowing where Lexie really was or how safe she would be. There were heartaches and dangerous moments that Lexie had to deal with, but not wanting to spoil anything, I’ll close by saying that I’ve enjoyed many books by EJ Noyes, and this one leaves me so happy that I read it, but sad that I must wait until May for the final in the series. My thanks to Bella Books and NetGalley for the arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
This series should be read in order. So if you haven’t already, begin by reading Integrity (May 2023). This story begins immediately after the ending of Integrity. Lexie Martin is an analyst for a US intelligence organization. The reuniting of Lexie and her girlfriend Sophia Flores is delightful. They are passionate and funny. Lexie is at her most vulnerable sharing what she can of herself with Sophia. And Sophia is the perfect counterbalance to her secretive life.
But the government has other plans for Lexie and she finds herself being put in the field for a six month assignment. That it is in a place where Lexie almost died once is not lost on her. Now she has a new relationship to figure out. Jeff is assigned to work with her and becomes her work husband. Lexie has to decide if she can trust him and the people who sent her on assignment. The main characters are well developed and you feel their emotions. Paranoia and tension builds and the story is thought provoking, sweet, and exciting. And then Noyes leaves it at a cliffhanger. It leaves me praying that book 3 is already written and I won’t have to wait too long to be back with Lexie again. And I’m hoping it answers all my questions.
The story of Dr. Alexandra (Lexie) Martin and Sophia Flores continues! This is book two in the Halcyon series and cannot be read as a standalone. You’ll have to read Integrity first. And that my friends, is definitely not a punishment! This second installment brings our heroines in situations nobody wants to be in, once again.
I received an advance review copy for free from Netgalley and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Intelligence analyst Lexie is trying to get back to a semblance of her normal life. Having been rescued from a very harrowing situation, she hopes she can go back to what she does best: reviewing secret intell. Her relationship with Sophia is going great. They’ve grown stronger together since surviving their impromptu trip to Florida, where Sophia, unbeknownst to herself, helps Lexie save the world by uncovering the truth about a very high impact government official.
Lexie knows in her gut that her actions from before will keep hunting her. She doesn’t know what to expect exactly but it’s definitely not being reassigned to a field op in a hostile country, once again. But for the first time in her life, she has a very good reason to get home safely. Home to Sophia.
Noyes has constructed another story that keeps you turning page after page. The suspense keeps you on your toes. While away Lexie tries to keep her relationship with Sophia alive and it seems like they succeed until it all goes to hell.
Lexie is paired with the last man on earth she wanted to spend six months with in close quarters. As their working relationship develops, they grow closer in a way that is extremely valuable. When a woman from Lexie’s past turns up on the scene, the situation takes some very unexpected turns.
This story is a wonderful mix of head and heart. The secret operation forces Lexie to keep thinking clearly and work as hard as she can to keep her country and its citizens safe from terrorists. The love she has for Sophia makes it harder and easier at the same time, because she knows personally for the first time in her life, what she is fighting for.
The story is told from Lexie’s point of view. At one point in the book it would have been nice to get a glimpse into the reasoning behind Sophia’s actions. That being said, this book is a great second installment, because it makes you crave the rest of the story. For me, that’s the hard part of reading a series that isn’t complete yet. I just have to find a way to keep myself occupied until the final book is released. I wholeheartedly invite you to join me in this agony, because the Halcyon series is very much worth it.
After the high stakes of the first book, and all that Lexie has achieved, she finally has a chance to relax and spend more time with Sophia...
...except things never seem to be easy for her.
This book certainly packs a punch. It's great, it really is - a lot of fun to read, and Lexie is such a great character. But wow her journey can be stressful at times, especially when others are messing with her life. And of course, the cliff at the end - given that the last book is also out now, you really do want to read them both together.
What a read! Not only did I laugh, but I also cried. This book had a bit of everything, and I had to immediately start book 3. The book picks up immediately after book 1 finished, with Lexie about to be forced overseas on an incredibly dangerous (and sometimes boring to her) mission. To the same region where she was held as a hostage and stabbed repeatedly before being rescued. But the president in the book is as petty as our current president and Lexie has humiliated him, at least in his opinion, frankly I’d be grateful that she found a person with ties to Russia. She is partnered with her least favorite person in the world, we know him in book one as Mr Smith, but his real name is Jeffrey Burton, and I love how the author manages to change Lexie and our opinions of him slowly throughout the story. Leaving is painful, especially because Lexie and Sophia haven’t been together long. Can long distance work? Will Lexie survive her overseas posting? Will Jeffrey ruin her zen and her tea? Will the president drop dead? (Sadly no in the last), but listen/read the story to find out.
The audiobook narrated by Abby Craden is fantastic. She brings so much life into the characters and honestly I laughed and cried listening to this. Her smooth voice is so easy to listen to and she’s my favorite narrator when it comes to all sapphic fiction. I’ve listened to her read the phone book, and can confirm I’ll listen to her read anything!
