This is absolutely the best book I've ever read and the only book I need to read regarding public speaking. It starts from a psychological explanation of the fear, to how common it actually is, to effective ways to overcome it such as empowering and nurturing inner thoughts. It points out that lack of self-acceptance and pursuit of perfection is the root cause of the fear of public speaking. And if you change your perspective, you would see things completely differently.

The author is like a mental therapist and the book is a mental training course. She shared techniques that she uses herself and that are proved to be effective. After reading the book, you will be your own mentor on public speaking, and not only limited to public speaking, but basically any form of social interactions that involve talking to people, and even building self-confidence in general. It helped me with my job interviews as a fresh graduate. It is rich in content but no prolonged writing for the sake of writing. It is all useful advices which you can go ahead to apply. It is a good read.

So I am not a public speaker. I am one of those people whose number one fear is public speaking and number two fear is death! Well, it's not really that bad...but it's bad enough. Taking this into account, I somehow managed to volunteer myself to give a presentation at a conference this month. I found Janet's book on Amazon and saw that it had received excellent reviews, so I ordered it. It's a very slight book, but packed full of tips and tricks to help you overcome your fear of public speaking and stage fright. Just reading the book and keeping Janet's tips in mind over the past three weeks has made a huge difference in how I am approaching the presentation. I am feeling incredibly more confident and calm about it (the presentation actually takes place in one week, so we'll see what the ultimate results are!). I would consider taking one of Janet's workshops on public speaking at some point in the future.

This book has incredible value for those that have social anxiety and stage fright. It explains the mechanisms of fear and has a lot of exercises to relax the body and mind, also pnl techniques for visualization and self analysis. The author herself had overcome this problem and give good insights. I wish this book had more about the causes of stage fright (hereditary, predisposition )but this we can learn with another book focused only in social anxiety.

As someone who used to have horrific social anxiety when speaking (ex. voice audibly quivering when presenting), this book helped me a LOT.

I read this before giving a huge presentation for school, and it helped me look confident even though I was super nervous.

I highly recommend it to anyone looking to build their confidence as a public speaker!

Definitely worth the read, I am no longer terrified of public speaking.

Imaging a life for myself that went beyond small-group interaction and the written word to potentially more influential performances (professor! speaker! influencer!), I picked up this book for its advice on calming stage fright jitters. Very much uncomfortable in the limelight, I felt that retreating to smaller group interactions and one-on-ones meant not living up to my potential. So, here was the chance to face an all-consuming fear.

And, that is exactly what Janet does. In the Spotlight is a manual for getting to the root of the fear, and for, along the way, picking up habits, reconditioning the mind, riding the wave of fear, quieting the scared child, and generally, becoming a better human being by honoring yourself and, in turn, being able to honor others by sharing your wisdom and know-how. She calls it like it is and gives advice on how to overturn the trembles, panic attacks and other onslaught of flight-or-fight reactions that those with elevated stage fright suffer from.

I found her book very insightful, and already, I see shifts in my thinking and in my ability to handle "in the spotlight" moments, riding the anxiety like a wave instead of like a cement truck.
