Nine to Five? Not for me. I’d rather make this magical house a home.
My career as a realtor bored me, except for when I got to test my handyman skills. So, when I finally saved enough, I purchased the most rundown manor I could find to scratch the itch.
The problem? A few guests rest within its walls who pique my interest in the most delightful ways.
And who are these new roommates? A sweet garden nymph, a mischievous dullahan, and a mysterious goth demon. Turns out, the house isn’t the only thing in need of a helping hand.
But no quest is without its prize. I never imagined that buying a rundown mansion would grant me powers! The more I repair, the more the house rewards me. It started as strength and endurance, but the closer I get to the girls, the more magical I become.
And my efforts to fix the house haven’t gone unnoticed. When the HOA shows up, I think they’re about to congratulate me on all my hard work.
Instead, they gave me a to-do list a mile long.
And we’re not the only paranormals in this so-called normal suburb.
Repairing the mansion is the challenge I craved, but a string of vandalisms keeps us on edge. Someone, or something, doesn’t want us living here.
It turns out Sunnyside won’t be as peaceful as I expected.
This story contains well-rounded love interests, multiple romance arcs with the male at the center, and more steamy scenes than you can shake a hoe at.
DNF at 20% underwhelming This is the third Kirk Mason book I've tried, I've only finished one and that one was no great shakes. First off, this is absolutely a rip off of Radley's Home for Horny Monsters (published 2018). I knew that going in. That's a book I found interesting so I wanted to see what this guys riff on that would be. The answer is, dull & derivative. I thought this guy would spice it up, or present a different take on it, but it's practically a carbon copy (but less good). The writing is plodding, the setting is dreary. I was really unimpressed and just looking for a reason to quit when the MC was confronted by the HOA (Home Owners Association). While having an HOA as the primary villain was this book's only stoke of brilliance, the writer botched the first meeting scene so badly I was finally given the excuse to bail I'd been looking for. I've finally come to the conclusion that Kirk Mason just doesn't light my fire.
I have had a string of books that were a lot of Harem and very little Book. This is first and foremost a slice of life story. The setting is simple without being simplistic. The characters are introduced quickly, but are fully fleshed out. Their actions line up with their motivations, which is very nice to see. Often monster girls are no more than window dressing, simple cardboard cutouts that are very generic. The character interactions are very organic and that provides a solid reading experience.
First up, this is no Radley's Home for Horny monsters, much as it may be trying. That said, it's a decent read, and I find the lack of existential evil threat in this one to be pleasant. That constant tension is my biggest knock on Radley's, albeit the characters are more complex and overall writing is at a higher level in those books.
Yes, I will read book 2, and if it's at least this good I'll be happy enough.
This was pretty good. It had shades of Radley's house for horny monsters. It was a lot more laid back though. More of a day to day house building story that just so happened to have monsters. I felt it worked well.
As required by U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations and Audible requirements, I am disclosing that I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request. I have listened to the audiobook, and I have voluntarily left an honest review. Receiving a review copy did not influence my rating nor my review.
“Demon DIY” is a fun story with very enjoyable narration. I’ve listened to stories authored by Kirk Mason before, but this is his first collaboration with Gwen Grayson, and this is the first I’ve listened to both of the VA’s. The only criticism I have is that MC Mark described wanting to grill “prime rib steaks” on a barbecue, but instead he pan seared them on a stovetop. Seriously, are the entire book team, including editors, vegetarians? Prime rib is a rib roast; it should be slow roasted in an oven. Perhaps the authors meant to describe cooking ribeye steaks, but as I type this review having recently enjoyed another delicious meal while on holiday in France, I cannot let this culinary crime go unmentioned.
Other than his cooking issue with beef, MC Mark is a very likable character. He’s bored by his job and his trust-fund clients, but he isn’t an ass to them. When he meets the MC monster girls, he’s kind, helpful and caring. As I reflect on the book, I think Mark is so darned nice he’s actually a bit dull. Happily, he’s surrounded by monster girls and human HOA (Home Owner’s Association) rule watchers with lots of strong personalities. Individually and jointly, these characters play perfectly against Mark’s straight-man role.
Mark decides to buy and fix-up a house that turns out to be inhabited by monster girls who are adrift after the death of the previous house owner. They make a great team, and I enjoyed listening to Mark navigate the different personalities of each of the girls as he tries to help each of them be happier. While there is some relatively mild conflicts that keep things interesting, “Demon DIY” is pretty much a slice-of-life story.
Adding in the HOA posse to a haunted house story was just brilliant, and added lots of fun. Yet more fun was had by Mark and some, but not yet all, of the girls. I recommend “Demon DIY”, and look forward to the sequel!
I think my biggest issue with these types of novels is the fact that the author spends more time describing the MC's dry mouth or lack of room in their pants while spending what feels like pages describing every detail about the women. Repeatedly. And somewhere in there is a story. I mean over 100 pages in and the only DIY the MC had managed to accomplish is weeding and dusting. I realize sex sells but seriously if your going to write a book at least pay more attention to the plot that you claim the book is about then trying to describe what feels like the pore count of every single female in the book. I still rate this as 4 stars because, like so many of this type of book, the story is promising. In my opinion of your a horny teen this type of book is for you, but if your more interested in a story look somewhere else until the author actually delivers with a plot.
I don't know what it is with Americans. They hear a house is haunted, and go and investigate it. They then go and sleep in a house that is full of cobwebs and hasn't been dusted for many years. They would sleep on a bed and sheet that has been left abandoned in a house for years. I will never understand them.
Reading this book, I can understand how Americans has so many successful serial killers. This guy goes into an abandoned house, and because a cute girl was crying, decides to sleep in it, and take care of the girl.
I don't know if I will read the sequel. They just bond. This guy doesn't question anything. I guess I can't expect a better plot with a "thick boobies goth demon" on the cover. There is just enough story to make some sense so they can get to the smut.
It honestly took me a while to finish this book. Not because it was bad but because the character interactions were so human and down to earth that I'd cringe (being acclimated to pure fluff). I finally got in the mood to finish it and boy am I glad.
It's not some epic masterpiece with death defying feats at every turn. It IS a semi- slow burn, sloce of life, paranormal 'sub'urban fantasy. I'm actaully surprisingly sentimental and tender hearted when it comes to my harem lit; this ended up filling that role surprisingly well.
I recomend to all sentimental lovers of harem literature.
It is a little slow at times but it's well worth it and that's honestly part of it's charm.
Mark sets out to change his life by buying a Victorian haunted mansion an fix it up himself .
Mark is a real estate broker for Sunnydale City selling high dollar mansions just like his parents before him did . He was groomed for the real estate business all his life . Even after his parents passing that was all he knew . During an commission celebration he comes across and old Victorian mansion an fixer upper supposedly haunted he decides to buy it for himself as a way to take him out of his boredom rut he was in .Giving him a challenge for himself . Recommend reading excellent book.
I stumbled across Demon DIY on Amazon and from the first moment of reading this book I was hooked. The writing just draws you in to the story, which deviates just enough from reality to not be jarring or far-fetched when the supernatural elements of the story are introduced. All the main characters are fleshed out well and I really enjoyed finding out more about each of the main ladies as we went along. The sexual elements to the story were very natural in their positioning in the story and were well paced and enjoyable. I can't wait to start on vol 2 and look forward to getting ahold of vol 3 when it is published.
This was a unique premise kind of a fan of the genre and I've never really seen this take on the story of monsters in a human world. The characters were likable enough but it was such a simplistic plot line world building that it was tough to actually care what was happening to the characters even as major things were pressing upon them. The antagonists were not really threatening and it didn't give you a sense of a well-defined story. Overall it was a simple good read and there might be something there for future building off of this first book. Good simple easy read!
This book is really awesome and I had a recommended it. It hit all the high notes of what a novel should be. The main character is relatable and the female characters are all individuals not cookie cutter. I really hope the author will write a sequel to this novel because it was just Awesome to read. Please continue to do more like this it was really Enjoyable to read this book.
The book was great. I do wish this was longer or part of a series, but that is by no means a critique. I think the ending was satisfying to leave it on its own, I just wish I had more to read of the characters. A few minor typos and incorrect word choices found that could use a final sweep by an editor, but nothing that really detracts from the story. 5 stars!
This is a very easy and interesting story to read. A lead character with an open mind, who cares for this place and it's occupants. He is not scared away by something that would make me krap my pants. He has to be on his toes to keep up with the trouble and not let it get to him. This is well written and interesting, as I said before, and you can keep doing it for as long as you want. Good work and luck on #2.
There is not much of a plot here, but that’s also not the point of the book. This is a story about a man discovering a new purpose in life and picking up supernatural loves along with it.
This is light, fun reading, and exactly what it promises. The authors keep the character interaction as believable as this sort of thing could be, and manage to bring everyone—even the “antagonists” (yes, in quotes)—into a favorable light.
Not just another harem tale but one with interesting characters and lots of tongue in cheek humor. A real estate salesman who is working at an unfulfilling job and decides to do something to change it. What steps he takes to achieve his goal and the consequences that arrive as a result of his choices make for a fun read. I didn’t find out until I finished this book that there is a book 2 following this one. I’m looking forward to reading it!
Clearly inspired by Annabelle Hawthorne's Radley's Home for Horny Monsters, but where that is intended to be erotica, this slows down and takes it's time - the MC doesn't immediately jump into bed with the first girl he meets, but actually gets to know them first. This is a nice change from a lot of books in this genre. The characters have personality, but there isn't much in the way of world building. The story is interesting enough, but wouldn't stand out in a crowd. Overall a decent read.
I loved the story, and I found the plot one I have had way too much insight on / HOA nightmares and a whole bunch of not I in the questioning, lol. The charters were interesting and fun.it all blended so well together. I thank you for your hard work. I look forward to you writing more in this areana
I enjoyed the initial offering of this series very much. Great characters with an interesting premise. Mark takes on a house that calls to him as a DIY project and gets a great deal more than he bargained for. The resolution to the problem was handled nicely. On to book 2!
This book randomly popped up for me, so I decided to read it as I was board. Couldn't put the book down and finished it after a few hours! Gutted! Now stuck waiting for the next in the series
What a great slice of life in a unique horror/fantasy world!! I for one wish the authors great luck and hope this series lasts a long time!!! A slow building power for the MC and unique and slightly abstract ladies in his growing family!!!
Amazing read, couldn't put it down and finished it in 2 days. I wasn't expecting it to be this much fun and be so invested in knowing the girls history and how their relationships with the main character would develop. Honestly can't wait for the next book and hope it comes soon.
Like I said need more of these, they were good and the interaction between all of the characters was more natural then some of the other stories that I've read. Over all good first book
I love the idea of a man who embodies helping his harem first before his own needs. The girls in the story are diverse personalities and each is fun in her own way. Can't wait for Book 2!
I really enjoyed this story. The characters were likable and the “villains” were perfect for this type of story. Looking forward to the next installment!
Couldn't put it down. Great read and endearing characters. Looking forward to read the next one! Enough smut to keep me interested, but not enough to overwhelm the plot! Just right.
Cute little start to Mx Gwen's universe. Great character development with plenty of room to grow into a fun and sexy mind trip. Looking forward to seeing how the house and its delightful residents grow.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was fun and entertaining. The story and characters were interesting and engaging. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. This book is definitely worth checking out.
