He was supposed to be a man from a tough world of crime and danger. But he’d never fitted that image he was supposed to portray. He’d always felt lost and out of his depth, like he was forever treading water.

Kayden Cole – ex-junkie, one-time gangster’s toy and…birdwatcher
Mason Pearce – the Miami narcotics detective assigned to protect Kayden while he turns state’s evidence

Never had he wanted to protect and cherish someone the way he did Kayden.

Mason likes his men big, brawny and brainless. Kayden’s ten years younger, short and slight. He’s also cerebral, introverted, and haunted by his past. Mason can’t understand his instant attraction but it’s like being struck by a thunderbolt. Closeted alone in a hotel room with Kayden for twelve hours every night, Mason is driven beyond the edge of his control, but he’ll lose his job and compromise Kayden’s safety if he tangles with him.

He was back to the lowest place he had ever been—alone with nothing and nobody—and if someone wanted to put him out of his misery, that was just fine .

Kayden’s damaged and scarred and in fear of his life. He lost the only man who ever meant anything to him and he’s suspicious of the cop’s motives. But Mason burrows beneath his skin, opens Kayden up and even though he’s scared, he wants to hope that finally, life will give him a break.

This is book 2 in the Damaged Goods series but is 100% a standalone and not related to book 1 at all. However, I still recommend reading book 1 as I loved it. This book is completely different from book 1 which was gritty and angsty and tough to get through due to subject matter and one of the MCs journey. Whereas with this book it was almost sweet and didn’t have as much angst. I’m not sure if it’s the way I’m feeling or just right book, right time but I absolutely loved this story between Mason and Kayden.

It was absolutely an insta-attraction story and you know what? It actually worked really well for them. Sometimes you just know! This story was very character driven. It was very much about them getting to know each other and there wasn’t too much touched on for the reason behind the witness protection but I felt that it worked well still. These two had amazing chemistry from the very beginning and to be honest a lot of this book is sex so be prepared for that.

I loved Kayden from the very first moment. An ex-junkie who turned his life around and is obsessed with bird watching? He was perfect! He was such a sweet character and the stuff he has gone through made me so sad for him. I loved that he found Mason, the first person to really love him. Though, Mason was a bit harder to like. There were a few parts I got mad at him but he absolutely made up for everything!

I was so happy with the ending! It was beautiful and was absolutely the best thing for these two. I’m really excited to read the next book in this series!

This is the second in a series but is only loosely connected to the first, and can easily be read as a standalone. Kayden is a witness in a federal prosecution case, and Mason is one of the cops assigned to protect him. They have this irresistible pull to each other, which Mason tries to deny at first.

I wasn't sure I liked Mason for most of the book, if I'm honest. I love the way Scarlet writes bad guys, but Mason wasn't that. He had his moments of being horrible, but nowhere near the level of some of her other bad guys. He wasn't a good cop either, thinking nothing of leaving his witness, and then breaking several laws (and moral codes) to find Kayden later. I did like Kayden though, he's been through so much in his relatively short life, yet he had this fire and desire to do the right thing, even though it was an almost impossible task.

The story focuses on the relationship between the two, and the court case Kayden is witness is a minor side plot, but the details of Kayden's life are horrific enough anyway. There's a ton of heat here between the two, while still developing the relationship between them to make it almost believable enough that Mason would throw away his career to be with Kayden in the end. I'm happy Kayden got his new life and happy ending, however.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

This wasn’t what I was expecting, in fact it was WAY better. Mason came off as a complete jerk to me at first but won me over by the end. The things people do for love some will never understand. These two needed each other because they completed each other. My heart broke for Kayden after getting his backstory. The ending was perfect for this story. I can’t wait for Save Me next. 🖤🔥🦜🔥🖤

After the first book in the Damaged Goods series, I was unsure what Protect Me would look like. My unsureness meant that I went in with an open mind, wondering how Scarlet would give Kayden and Mason their HEA. I wasn’t disappointed.

Kayden is under police protection, waiting to testify against his gangster “ex” and tired of being locked up and looked at as the junkie he once was instead of the clean, birdwatching shell he is now.
Mason is the Detective assigned the night shift to protect Kayden from said gangster and his cronies taking him out before he can testify against him.

The first time the two men lay eyes on one another it’s clear that there is a spark there. Mason doesn’t want to give into it because “the kid is a junkie” and not worth losing his job over. Kayden doesn’t want to give into it because after what happened to him, he isn’t sure he’ll ever feel anything again – physically, emotionally or mentally. What Kayden does know is that it won’t be a loss for him in the long run if he’s taken out while looking through the big picture window and admiring the birds.

Though Mason gives into Kayden, takes it back by hurting him and then re-takes it back because he realizes that love at first sight is an actual thing, once Kayden testifies, he’s to go into Witness Protection – never able to see Mason again. When an attempt is made on Kayden’s life because Mason had to leave the room to get away from the building tension, Mason is booted from watching over Kayden and placed on desk duty. Realizing that he may never get to say goodbye to Kayden properly, he convinces his partner – who has a soft spot for Kayden – to let them have some time together. They have an explosive reunion and an even more devastating goodbye.

When Mason is unable to live without Kayden even after months apart, he goes to find him. Will the two men be reunited? Can they make their relationship work outside of the cramped motel room? Is Mason willing to give up everything to be with Kayden – and will Kayden believe he is worthy of Mason’s love?

I received a complimentary copy of this book and, as always, my review is honest and unpaid.

I'm not sure how to rate this book; On the one hand, it was not technically sound. The story starts abruptly and we're thrown in the middle of a situation with the MCs unable to keep their hands from each other in true fated mated/shifters fashion, even though there's not a single PNR element in the story. It simply doesn't make any sense whatsoever. The background story about Kayden being a witness in a drug dealer case never lifts of the ground, it's just a setup for those two to meet. There's plenty of hot sex but little romance or courting between those two, a whole lot of unrealistic situations and more than a few eye rolling scenes. Also, Mason acted like a major a$$hole for a big chunk of the book, but Blackwell's MCs tend to do that, so I wasn't caught by surprise; in fact I enjoyed the extra drama.

Despite all that, it's easy to read, and in fact quite enjoyable. However, it feels like cliff notes from a longer story; it's one of the rare cases where the book would benefit from 50 or more pages, to ease into the story and start their romance more gradually, because things happened way too quickly to make sense. Most of all, I'd like to see those two interact outside the bedroom; the focus is always on their sex chemistry rather than anything else and besides the brief scene where Kayden shares his personal story, we're not privy to any of their discussions so we can see how those two fit in general.

Proceed with caution.

Kayden is a drug dealer waiting to testify against the head of the organization and his protection detail at the safe house is Mickey by day and Mason by night. Mason isn’t happy about the assignment, but once he sees Kayden, he can’t get him out of his mind. There is a mutual attraction between the two which ends up causing Mason to be removed from the detail, unable to see Kayden again. After the trial, Kayden is whisked off into the Witness Protection Program, and Mason cannot locate him. Two years later, Mason has a lead and he sets off to hunt for the man he cannot forget, the love of his life, to see if there can be a future for them.

Both main characters are drawn to each other, even though backgrounds are very different and Kayden doesn’t believe himself worthy of someone to love him. Their feelings and emotions, the need to reconnect despite the difficulties, all ring true. This is not a long book, but it held my interest throughout and had a HEA conclusion. I would give it 4.5 stars.

A complete 180 from Scarlett’s norm and the first book of this series, but delivered just as well, if not better! In true Scarlett fashion, though, the uncertainty, along with the character's history, kept me on edge, unsure of either fate.

𝓝𝓮𝓿𝓮𝓻 𝓱𝓪𝓭 𝓱𝓮 𝓫𝓮𝓮𝓷 𝓼𝓸 𝓽𝓱𝓸𝓾𝓰𝓱𝓽𝓯𝓾𝓵, 𝓼𝓸 𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓼𝓲𝓭𝓮𝓻𝓪𝓽𝓮 𝓲𝓷 𝓱𝓲𝓼 𝓵𝓲𝓯𝓮. 𝓝𝓮𝓿𝓮𝓻 𝓱𝓪𝓭 𝓱𝓮 𝔀𝓪𝓷𝓽𝓮𝓭 𝓽𝓸 𝓹𝓻𝓸𝓽𝓮𝓬𝓽 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓬𝓱𝓮𝓻𝓲𝓼𝓱 𝓼𝓸𝓶𝓮𝓸𝓷𝓮 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝔀𝓪𝔂 𝓱𝓮 𝓭𝓲𝓭 𝓚𝓪𝔂𝓭𝓮𝓷.

The growth and development of both characters were mesmerizing, without including their instantaneous connection and mind-altering chemistry. The constant back and forth between them was needed to build their loyalty while allowing trust and confidence to grow.

There were many emotional moments, from Kayden’s history and Mason’s employment to witnessing their personalities glow and encountering their peculiarities while we swooned over their story. I cannot wait to see where Scarlett takes us next; it's always an adventure

I recently finished reading the second book in the Damaged Goods series and I must say, it was just as captivating as the first. The story revolves around Kayden who is under witness protection and Mason, who is assigned to protect him. From the moment Mason lays eyes on Kayden, he is drawn to him. However, Kayden can be challenging to handle as he is rebellious and does not take orders well. Mason finds that the only way to calm him down is through a kiss. Despite his attraction to Kayden, Mason knows that he could jeopardize his job if he pursues a relationship with him. As the story unfolds, we learn more about Kayden's past, and it's hard not to empathize with him. The book is a perfect blend of romance, angst, sweetness, and some intense moments. I particularly loved the character of Mickey. Overall, it was an enjoyable read, and I highly recommend it.

Mason is a detective assigned to protect Kayden, who was scheduled to testify against a huge drug lord. When they met, there was an instant attraction. However, Mason, at first, was a real jerk to Kayden. He didn't treat him very nicely at all. Kayden, a huge bird lover, was a very timid guy who had a rough life. This is the 2nd book in this series. They can be read as stand-alones, with HEA. I am excited to read more by this author.

Detective Mason is on a witness protective detail for Kayden. When Kayden is bratty, he kisses him. Then they both have to fight their attraction. After Kayden is relocated, Mason looks for him. Though totally unprofessional, Mason is obsessed with Kayden and they light up the sheets. This book has an intense desire, need and desperation through the whole book, one of the most passionate I've ever read. Scarlet, I am a fan! I received a copy of this book through BookSirens and this is my voluntary opinion.

From the first chapter I was invested in this story. The concept in the blurb got my attention. Whilst we find out some of the back story the actual focus on the story is the interaction between the two MCs. I thought they’d be more action based on the reason for Kayden being in witness protection but it’s all about them.
The sex scenes were hot.
It was well written and I liked the characters. I read it in one evening and it kept my attention. A solid 4 stars.

This story was different than many other books I have read. This one had a lot of growth in the characters but it was growth due to their experience with one another not because of craziness going on within the story. This was really about two men getting to know one another and then realizing they want to be together and that is most important to them.

Very intense storyline. Kayden Cole is in protective custody until the court needs his testimony. Mason Pearce and his partner Micky from Miami-Dade police department are his two guards. Someone tries to shoot Kayden at the safe house. The Marshall Service moves him until the trial ends. This is a story that includes, drama, adventure, danger and romance. It also shows you can’t assume what a person is like due to their circumstances.

Second in a series but there is no relation between these stories. Kayden is a touching character who has been really badly treated by life. His interest in birds is intriguing. I wasn't a fan of Mason in the first part of the story but he turned out much nicer for Kayden than expected. The physical chemistry between them was very clear right from the start.

I absolutely adored Kayden. He has fought so hard and came out on the other side of a horrific past. How can you not love a sweet bird lover? Mason is a bit rough around the edges. He makes bad decisions but underneath it all he needs Kayden and realizes the hard way that he cannot live without him. This book was surprisingly super steamy! I will not give too much away, but Kayden deserved so much happiness and Mason was his man.

This was an okay read. I suppose it’s meant to be kind of an insta love situation, but that didn’t come across for me. I didn’t feel any authentic chemistry between Mason and Kayden. I did like the overall premise and there was some good tension in the plot around Kayden’s past. I would have like that to be developed a bit more as it was pretty compelling.

This one is a hard sell for me. The premise was interesting but the plot was definitely an afterthought to the erotica. Mason was kind of a jerk. Okay, no, he was massively a jerk. And two grown men who can't/don't communicate at all? Also.. I dunno. I just had trouble suspending my disbelief for some parts near the end (that I'm trying not to spoil). It was an entertaining read, I guess, but I'm not sure I'll pursue the series at all.

Touching Hurt/Comfort Story

This series hits hard with all the feelings. Kayden & Mason have an instant connection but it's still a rough start due to the situation. I couldn't help but be sucked into their story as they navigate everything that they go through until they get to their HEA.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This is the first book in this series I have read. It is so different than the Cold Love Series, but just as intense. I love Kayden and Mason and how the author brings out their characters.

Loved this one even better than the first. Mason was a bit hard to like, but Kayden was absolutely wonderful. I loved how this story was, it's only loosely attached to the first book, easily a standalone.

That ending! Just beautiful. I saved Kayden’s quote and have gone back to reread the last two pages.
I loved the story and the emotions of tenderness and deep desire. Mason and Kayden are wonderful characters who never let go of each other emotionally even when they had to physically. This was such a star crossed love! Both of them are written with depth and the dual POV lets the reader into their thoughts. I remember this book from a previous read and in my gone away Goodreads review I praised the character of Mickey. He was great in all ways. When I read the blurb I remembered the motel scenes and the lovely birdwatching. An excellent story! All the stars.

Protect Me by Scarlett Blackwell is the second book in the Damaged Goods series. I already enjoyed Heal Me and I’ve cherished Kayden and Mason in Protect Me.

Kayden is a 27-year-old ex-junkie. He had been arrested several times since he was 16, for possession of marijuana, cocaine and heroin and for shoplifting. But he’s much more than that. He’s smart, bright and adorable.

He’d recently been working for Theo Howard, the biggest drug lord in the area. He’s also one of the main federal witnesses in the trial against Theo. He’s staying at a B&B where Mason and Mickey, his partner, take turns in keeping him safe.

Mason is a cop. He’s ten years Kayden’s senior. He has to protect Kayden from being murdered by Theo, so he can testify in the trial. He’s in the night shift. He’s instantly attracted to Kayden since the moment he sets eyes on him. Because he’s protecting Kayden, and to keeping him alive, he’s not supposed to have anything with him. But he can’t resist the attraction he feels for Kayden, and neither can him.

“Mickey held his hands up. “All right, I’m sorry for the flippancy. I admit it. When you two first met, I saw the way he looked at you. And the way you looked at him. Every time you were in the same room, the chemistry between you burned out of control. I expected you to f**k him that very first night.”
“I didn’t,” Mason murmured, with his head bowed. “I kissed him though. I couldn’t help myself.”

Kayden’s love for birds and knowledge about them was awesome. He was so cute talking about birds and explaining that he’d always wanted to travel to the UK to spot a bullfinch in the flesh because he’d never seen one. And everything Mason does for him… cute and charming.

Reading about Kayden’s backstory was really emotional and heartbreaking. His life hadn’t been easy at all.

The epilogue is wonderful and sweet. After some tough time, they finally have their most deserved HEA.

Warnings: Violence and strong language, rape off page, drug abuse.

I enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it. Waiting for Save Me.

I received an ARC from BookSirens for free and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.
